Great Point & Shoot

Bought at: Local Sony Style Store
Date: 12/20/08
Price: $329 (Holiday Special. Reg. $399)

I have owned the Sony DSC-P73 for many years. It has been an awesome camera and it still works. But I wanted a new one for mainly one reason.... a larger screen. I have been looking for a new camera for a few years. The Sony T2 & the T300 both have caught my eye. But I decided to wait until one camera had all I wanted. The T700 has all I want and then some.

The first thing you notice with this camera is its screen. It has a gigantic 3.5 in extra fine LCD touch screen with only 3 buttons located on the top (power, shutter and playback). This camera is sleek to say the least. Once on the screen is bright and can be viewed easily in daylight, without too much glare. For such a little camera it also packs a big zoom that is plenty for a point and shoot. While it took me a few hours to learn the interface design I now have it down packed and can maneuver easily though the settings. It has 4 GB of internal memory so you will always have room for that picture perfect shot. Plus it will take Memory Stick Duo if you do need any extra room. It will take wide-screen pictures (16:9) and will put out HD quality pictures with an additional cord. The Smile Shutter is pretty neat, automatically snapping the picture once everyone is smiling. Though I have found it to be a little slow if more than 3 people are in the picture. Now while the large screen is awesome it does have its draw back. The battery life is much shorter than my old Sony only averaging 8-10 hours of constant use. Luckily the battery will fully charge in 2.5-3 hours, but you may what to keep a spare on hand. Overall I could not be happier with this camera. It truly is Like No Other.

Nice Try but some huge issues.

I had a old cybershot that I just loved and so when I learned we were going to Disney I thought it was time to upgrade. It is a nice looking camera. But it has some huge issues.
One being red eye. Despite all of its red eye prevention features. (blinking pre flashes etc) They just don't work. It gets real old fast having to fix all the eyes and if your daughter has pretty green eyes then they are black in the pictures because of the red eye fix.

Also as someone else said. White spots all over night pictures. We had pretty pictures in front of the castle at night and they were ruined by white spots all over.

I'm very sad I spent so much money. Sometimes a lot of money doesn't mean better quality.

It's a good camera.

It's one of my favorate cameras I bought. It's small and easy to carry. The pictures are so nice. I like it very much.

AWESOME!

I love love love this camera. It takes the picture quickly, it has tons of easily accessible features and is very small and thin. I bought the neoprene case with the clip. I like the case a lot it matches the pink of the camera. Some neat features are...it has a smile shutter that if turned on will only take a picture when all are smiling, this is nice for group shots and is very accurate. It also alerts you when it thinks someone has blinked in your picture-very handy. I can also edit by adding stamps, writing on the screen, making it black and white and monochrome and many more different things I'll let you discover those for yourself! I would recommend this camera to anyone. Buy an extra battery though!

The Sony DSC-W170 features an enviable 10.1-Megapixel resolution, Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens, and Sony's Double Anti-Blur solution for crisp, clear images with a sophisticated, compact body. A large, bright 2.7" Clear Photo LCD display includes an anti-reflective coating that provides for excellent visibility to help you compose, view, and share photos with superb clarity and color reproduction, even in bright sunlight. In addition, Face Detection technology, Smile Shutter, and Intelligent Scene Recognition elicit stunning detail from special moments. High-resolution images can be enjoyed in 16:9 High-Resolution Mode simply by connecting the camera directly to a Sony BRAVIA HDTV or other compatible HDTV with an optional cradle for optimal HD playback. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, a 9-point auto-focus measures the focus at 9 precision points instead of 5 for a greater creative freedom to compose your image. Super SteadyShot(R) Optical Image Stabilization compensates for shaky hands and minimizes blur with optical sensors that detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens. Shutter Speed - Auto (1/4 - 1/1,600) / Program Auto (1 - 1/1,600) Aperture Range - Auto (F3.3/F8.0 (W), 2 steps) / Program auto (F3.3/F8.0 (W), 2 steps) with ND Filter White Balance - Automatic, Cloudy, Daylight, Fluorescent 1, Fluorescent 2, Fluorescent 3, Incandescent, and Flash Movie Modes - MPEG VX Fine with Audio (640x480 at 30fps), MPEG VX Standard with Audio (640x480 at 16fps), Presentation (320 x 240 at 8fps) Scene Modes - Beach, High Sensitivity, Landscape, Snow, Soft Snap, Twilight, and Twilight Portrait Flash Modes - Auto, Forced On, Forced Off, and Slow Synch In-Camera Editing - Red-eye reduction, soft edge filter, cross filter, partial color filter, and fish-eye filter

OK but.........

This is the 2nd Cyber-Shot camera that I have purchased. It is a great little point and shoot. This model however seems to be much more sensitive then the 120 I previously owned. Many of my photos are blurred. I use this model exactly as I did for my 120 and the % of bluured shots is greatly increased on the 170. Seems a mono or Trip Pod will need to be my next purchase although that removes the convenience of ownin a point and shoot.

So the camera and its features are ok but the Jury is still out.

E91:01 error

The camera is good. But only after 2 weeks of use, I got the E91:01 error. (Google for it). Initializing the camera didn't help. Sony's online chat support was profoundly uninformed and unhelpful and asked to send the camera back for repair (shipping costs mine) since as per the "analyst" it has an internal malfunction. So now I have a camera with no flash. I can take pictures fine except have to turn off the flash.
Anyways this is going back to Amazon. They already issued an RMA. So buying this camera is a gamble -- a significant number of people get the E91:01 error and Sony's tech support is clueless.

Love my little Sony camera

Needed a pocket sized camera to have handy and capture the moments in everyday life. The dsc-w170 is wonderful. It has many functions, yet you can start taking great picture right out of the package. We have the Sony Hybrid and love it but considered it too much for hauling around on trips and everyday stuff -- thus this Sony purchase.

Also with a memory card it can dispaly thousands of pictures -- great brag book - can just do a slide show and share!!

Great little camera

This camera is fantastic! It is very resilient. I got it wet while traveling and it was foggy for a half hour and then dried itself out. It also bounced around my purse for three weeks in Europe with no problem. It takes great pictures and works well at night. The zoom feature works very well and switching between the easy and auto feature is easy. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a light camera they can take anywhere.

Good Technology Marred by Bad Design

I ended up taking this camera back to the store, and it broke my heart to do it. In all other respect I was very happy with the advanced tech the T500 brings to the table. The HD video looked great, touchscreen made it easy to get around the menu system, and it took pretty good pictures....

Except under flash conditions. Using the flash will result in pictures filled with dust orbs, little flecks of dust reflecting light back due to the proximity of the flash to the lens. This renders the T500 useless under flash conditions, which is a deal-breaker for me.

So back it went. Hopefully the Sony designers can fix this fatal flaw with their ultra-compact cameras.

Novelist beware

When I purchased this camera it advertised GPS location on pictures. Being new to photography I read it as it was included in the camera....NOT. It is a separate device that you must carry and then it matches the time of the picture with the time on the GPS tracking devise and then pinpoints it on a map. Since then this has been removed from the description. THE GPS WAS MY MAIN REASON FOR BUYING THIS CAMERA, it was just plain misleading.

I am still figuring out this camera. NOT nearly as easy as my cheaper Cybershot. Point and Shoot does not describe this camera. But again I am new to photography.

Good Camera

I have owned this camera for almost a month now and have been very satisfied with it. The 5x zoom is excellent and much better than my prior camera's 3x zoom. The HD video is super and I can get over 3 hours of HD video on my 16gb memory card pro duo. I was worried about the battery life based upon other reviews. The camera took 120 pictures and 7 minutes of HD video outside with no flash. That is plenty good for me. I have an extra battery just in case and estimate the flash will bring down the number of pictures to about 2/3 of what I got without the flash.

All in all, this camera is very nice, takes good pictures and video, and was worth what I paid.

Large spots/bubbles in indoor shots with flash

I'm on my second one of these cameras (DSC-T500), and both have recorded large bubbles or spots on the pictures that are taken indoors with flash. Not every single such picture, but most of them have this. I haven't seen this mentioned in any other review - is anyone else seeing this?

Other than that, the outdoor pictures and videos are great. But ruined indoor photos are a deal breaker.

Extremely Poor Picture Quality & Customer Service

I purchased the DSCT500 new in November 2008. Unfortunately, the picture quality was way below any digital camera I have ever owned or used. I was advised to send to the Sony Repair Center which I did. It was returned and the pictures were still of low quality. It appears that perhaps there was a defect in the lens, the sensor, or the programming. However, my main complaint turns out to be the lack of service by Sony Customer Service and Customer Relations. My calls have not been logged properly, I have been hung up on, and I have spent countless hours on hold and being switched from one department to another. I am very disappointed in every aspect of this purchase. I don't know what else to say beyond the fact that I am totally frustrated and might as well chalk up the $400 as a total loss. Sony has disappointed me big time, and left me helpless.

Customer Review :

Good value, takes getting used to

This camera is worth the cost, but you have a steep learning curve. If you're willing to learn how to deal with the arcane menu system, you'll be able to take surprisingly sophisticated pictures. I've had it for a couple of months, and I just returned yesterday from a week in Hawaii, where I really had the chance to use it.

At the outset, let me say that I drastically misjudged the rate of power consumption. I gave it a full charge before departure, but with only moderate use, it was drained by day three of my vacation. I used the camera in the cell phone for the rest of the trip! This was my own fault. I should have taken the battery charger with me. My cell phone is a Verizon LG Dare, which does a good job at 3 megapixels. The Sony is, of course, 10 megapix.

Nevertheless, I keep asking myself how much more is the Sony giving me than I would get with the cellphone camera? I leave that up to the user to decide.

I ordered the special cable that allows me to view the Cybershot pictures on the HDTV. This is a must. I save my pictures on the PC using Picasa, the free software from Google.

Some critics say the pictures from the Cybershot DSCT300 are "noisey." I'm not sure what this means. I think that most people will be quite pleased with the results. I expect that with more familiarity with the camera, my results will improve.

As I said in the very beginning, this is not a "point and shoot" camera. It has a wide array of menus and adjustment options. Without learning what these options do, one is not making full use of the technology. It would be like driving a car in first gear.

Taking movies works best with a stable platform, especially when the zoom is in full effect. My son who is a professional videographer introduced me to the cheap monopod, which works great. They can be had for less than $20.

Great on the budget

This camera does not have automatic photo rotation, NO memory card or case included, and sometimes if you simply touch the slide-down part it turns on then back off again. Seller only gave 10 days exchange/return, and I did not see that in time, or i would have gotten a later version. Otherwise, color is great, handling superb.

Sony Camera's sucks.

I have had this sony camera for a year now and I was very dissapointed witht the quality. Picture mostly have an orange glow. Forget about the steady shot it sucks. If you are shaking one bit the picture is not clear. That also goes for the person in the shot if it is moving than you can forget it. If you want my advice buy a cannon. They have better reputation and quality.

Great super-compact point and shoot camera

Takes great pictures for a little compact camera. It even takes good short videos although you have to press a few menu items on the screen to get to that feature. The screen does get the fingerprints but I only really notice them when the camera is off. It's not an issue when reviewing pic's on the screen. You won't be dissappointed.

I love this camera!

I bought this camera with the explicit intent of using as a 'pocket' camera - keeping it with me at all times so I could take pictures when I wanted, so I was looking for a fairly automated camera. The auto function is great and the camera sets itself up beautifully to automatically take the perfect picture, yet is easy to set up for yourself. I really like the large touch screen. The only con to this camera so far is that the red eye flash and the regular flash really are blinding as other reviewers have mentioned. Often get odd expressions on people's faces if the red eye flash goes off. I tend to keep this function off and fix the image later.

Save your money

This is our third Cybershot to own in the past 5 years. We have loved them in the past and were impressed with all the features. The zoom is horrible on this camera. Pictures come out grainy when using the zoom. Outside the pictures are great, but life happens in both. We returned it after one week and are still searching for a good camera in this price range. We own a Digital SLR (Pentax) and love taking pictures. My husband is into messing with all the settings. Our previous cybershot took better pictures at a fraction of the cost. No matter what setting we used, the pictures were dark and grainy inside with the zoom. We had to get right up on the subject to get a clear picture. We expected more the price and were dissapointed. Lesson learned: more expensive and higher resolution (and zoom) does not equal a better camera!

I have a sony cybershot 7.2 mp digital camera.could you please tell me how to import picture from it to my wi? i tried installing it but it seems it is not compatible with the xp version , as i could not locate the option of sony digital camera on the installation wizard( the other options available were kodak , olympus etc). i also got a cd along with the camera , it has a software called picture browser . pls tell me if i need to use it to install my camera.

Answer:
dont try any softwares.. just connect your cam to ur computer .. some times it will automatically detects ur camera memory card as a new drive like h: i: etc in my computer.. if it doesnt works , buy a new mmc card reader.. it costs so cheap.. and use that memory card reader to transfer files from card to computer.. use photoshop fore image enhancement than using local softwares with the camera .. and u can use picassa for foto organising .. a better free software from google.. it can also import foto from ur cameras http://picasa.google.com/download/ picasa link ... try it

Question : Is it possible to use a third-party Info-lithium replacement battery in a SONY digital camera?
Hi! Please...I have a SONY DSC-S50 Cyber-shot digital camera, and I believe it's time for a battery replacement. The model number on my battery is: NP-FM50. This battery is the original battery and it came with the camera. It's labled as an "infolithium" battery. Please, is it mandatory that I order a SONY replacement battery, in particular, or am I safe in ordering a compatible lithium battery online or elsewhere? If so, which online site is recommended? One site suggested that sometimes third-party batteries don't always work in SONY digital cameras. Sony, naturally, suggests that I use their brand of accessories. I am still quite the novice and any/all advice regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)

Answer:
I've had luck using compatible batteries for my old Sony digicam. But I heard that the newer Sonys have a way of checking if the battery is a genuine Sony infolithium battery. Best to work with a local seller that has a good return policy - such as Best Buy or Circuit City. I personally buy most of my rechargable batteries from Thomas Distributing: http://store.thomas-distributing.com/displayproduct.asp?which=57 I've also had good luck with Battery Barn: http://www.batterybarn.com/npfm50.htm

Question : How do you download pictures from the internal memory of the sony digital camera?
Sony digital camera, USB cable Windows 2000, XP

Answer:
USB cable

Question : Will any Sony digital camera body work with the older Minolta Rokkor lenses?
I have many good Minolta Rokkor lenses I've used on several Minolta SRT camera bodies. I understand that Sony bought Minolta so will any of the Sony digital bodies fit the Rokkors (like the older Pentax lenses do with current Pentax digitals)?

Answer:
There is an adapter but its hard to find although a visit to the Sony web site might be helpful. Other than that just keep checking on eBay. Unfortunately, when Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 AF camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. Sony now uses the A-mount so any Maxxum AF lens will work just fine on a Sony DSLR.

Question : Which is better a Sony or a Canon digital camera ?
I'm panning to buy a good digital camera and i'm wondering which is better a sony digital camera or a canon. Do you know any good model to suggest ?

Answer:
Sony tends to be lower end. They're limited on lenses and feel cheap. Sony has been making SLRs since 2006 and Canon since the early 1900s. Who do you think would be better?

Question : How do you go to the trash bin in a Sony digital camera?
It's a sony Cyber-shot DSC-W120 digital camera. I Deleted the pictures by accident andI really want to get them back. Thanks

Answer:
You are thinking that your camera works like your computer, sorry but it does not, once you have deleted them then under all normal circumstances you have lost them. If you have not taken other photographs since you deleted them so that they have not been overwritten you can contact a specialist company who deal in data recovery. There may be software you can purchase that will do the same job, how effective it is I have no idea. You will have to do a search of the internet to locate it. Whichever way it will probably cost you, so it depends how important these photos are. Regards.

Question : Can you use a sony memory card on a canon digital camera?
I used to have a sony digital camera and had bought a sony memory card for it but my camera broke and so i got a new one but its a canon. but I want to load the pics that I have on my sony memory card to my computer, can I use it in my canon?

Answer:
each camera uses a certain kind of memory card. Your sony was probably a memory stick, or pro duo or something, the canon, like the last person said, is probably an sd. If you really want to know why didn't you try to shove the old one in the new camera. If it fit and saved a taken picture to it then you know it would work. Genius.

Question : How can I find the manual to download for my Sony digital camera DSCP72?
I have a Sony digital camera DSCP72 and I do not have the manual for it. I want to download it from the internet. How do I do that. What is the link to key in so that I can download the manual?

Answer:
Go to the SONY website and type in the model number in their Search area. They should have a PDF of the manual.

Question : What is a good model of a Sony digital camera?

Answer:
go to sonystyle.com check out the models then go to yahoo shopping for a good price

Question : Problem with the display of a Sony digital camera?
I have a sony digital camera model DSC-T50. Yesterday I saw that there is a gray line across the display. Can this be fixed? And how much will it cost? There is no point in getting a new display, I might as well buy a new camera. If someone has any ideas please help. Thank you in advance.

Repair is usually cost prohibitive unless your camera is still under warranty, but maybe you can fix the problem by removing the batteries for at least one minute. This will make the camera reset to the original program settings. You can also clean the battery and camera electrical contacts because this can cause that problem. Check out the source link for this and other ideas. The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between the batteries and the camera. Digital cameras require lots of power. If electrical contacts are not really good, this can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD display is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. With bad contacts, cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.
