Good camera but similar issues
I've had this camera for three years now. I've experienced all the same issues as many folks here. The strange power off/with lens open, then reversing. The only thing I've done is immediately remove the batteries after turning on the camera while pushing the lens in. it works!
I have a suggestion for those of you with blurry pictures. This camera has 5-6 settings for the quality of photos. If you press the trash icon button while in regular mode (do not have an image up screen) the menu for image size will appear. These are jgs folks. They are pixel based and can be very small. Also jpgs are meant for screen viewing, not printing, so you need to boost them up in order to get decent prints from these images. If you want clear images..please try to use the highest setting possible in order for the camera to record as many pixels of information. I use the highest setting 3.1M (other options are 2.8M, 2.0, 1.2 and VGA (which is the lowest and will give you terribly blurry picutres). It's quite easy to mistakenly press this button and change the image size, (this happened to us once while on vacation..terribly frustrating when I discovered what should have been beautiful, mmemorable photos were all at a low resolution.) Please give this a try
I'm all for class action suit vis a vis the battery chomping and lens issues. It's uncanny how often this has happened to so many people.

Great Camera - Vivid outdoor pics
Did alot of research before buying - had the camera 2+ years and it takes awesome and vivid outdoor pics but indoor tends to be a little "warm" (read orange/reddish) in auto mode. No dial to change settings - you have go into a menu system. Has good flash and takes good 640X480 movies (with sound) limited in time only by memory space. Only complaint is recharge time between flash shots - 3 to 4 seconds. I was surprised to see that it is still avaialable.

TOO MANY BLURRY PICTURES!
Good color BUT NOT reliable to take clear pictures. TOO MANY BLURRY PICTURES! Thinking about class action on Sony as there are a bunch out there that have the same issue. VERY disappointed.

pretty good over all
a good first camera, it is cheap and has good simple to use auto modes. The macro mode was a bit disapointing, it is difficult to get clear pictures with alot of detail but not imposible. low light videos or pictures with out a flash tend to have a red tint to them. It is a bit large for the features it offers, and the softwear which came with it was not very user friendly. I have been pleased with it for pictures of family and friends. pointing and shooting usualy yields good clear pictures which I have been able to enlarge to 16" by 22" with no distortion. The video mode works well for capturing fun moments, but most be taken in a well light area.

My Review of the Sony Digital Camera Cyber-shot 3.2MP
I gave this camera to my children to take pictures of my grandchildren who live in another country. They post them to a site on the internet, and I can see them as well as order paper copies. The camera works well, and we are all pleased with it.

Dead Mega pixels after 1 year....
You got it... I loved this camera until I was on vacation in New Zealand and my mega pixels started to die. Yes, within two weeks of the first one dying... three of the mega pixels died leaving me with these nasty looking black circles in all of my shots. I sent it back to have it repaired and they told me it would be the same price as buying a new camera. So... after a year of a decent camera, I found it just didn't last for the money. I am back on the market for a new camera. I wouldn't recommend it because of that purpose and the cost of having it repaired after a year when it could also break. On the plus side, I loved that it was black and could fit in my pocket.

Great camera although a little slow when taking pictures in low light conditions. I got a kick out of the bad review from Dec 22, 2006. The same thing happened to my DSC-W1, although it is not megaPixels dying. The dark spots are caused by dirt trapped inside the camera from using it in a dusty location. I had mine cleaned (including CCD) and the dark spots are now gone.

Fantastic Pocket Digital Camera
I purchased this camera on July 29, 2004 and have been very happy with it's performance. It takes great pictures, easy to use, great menu's and it is very good looking. The DSC-W1 has exceeded all my expectations and has been a pleasure to use. If you are in the market for a point and shoot, plus, numerous and easy adjustments, your'll love this camera.

Used to be great.
I've had this camera for almost 2 years now. All of a sudden it has the black screen LCD and is useless. It's not on the recall list like many other Cybershots for this problem. Sony will fix it for 181.00 plus. Not worth it. This will be my very last Sony camera.

Terrific picture quality
The quality of the photos produced by this camera is outstanding. Absolutely no trace of purple fringing on high-contrast scenes. No jpeg artifacts to hide the details. Most of the 5 megapixel cameras I have used produce photos that look good when they're reduced to 1280x1024 pixels or so, but when you look at them in full resolution you see blurriness in the details, or fringing around objects. There is absolutely none of that with this camera.
Add to that the ease of use and the wealth of exposure controls (full auto, shutter and aperture priority auto, and complete manual, along with a few programmed modes). This may not be a top end camera for the professional photographer, but it is well suited to beginners to serious amateurs.
The only caveat I can think of is the digital zoom. This works by effectively cropping the photo, thereby reducing the final image resolution. It's probably best to let the camera use its full resolution and then do your cropping at your leisure with good photo editing software on your computer.

Worst camera ever
I bought this camera a couple of years ago in amazon, and it work fine for about five months. After that, it didn't turn on, or it worked for a while and then turned off when you took the picture, leaving the lens outside. Too bad I couln't return it, but it was definitely a waste of money. Don't even bother.
Strange to find a sony product this bad.

My Best Friend
Clearly this camera isn't really my best friend, i actually know humans too but it was close to it. I bought this camera in late 2004 because my family was getting ready to take trip to the beautiful country of Nicaragua to visit some family (i'm a halfy, my dad's from Missouri) so i NEEDED to have a camera. at that time, this camera was the hottest thing you could find for that money, and i bought mine at Best Buy-everythingoverpriced. Anyway, if you're looking for a great, durable camera, this is the one for you. Countless times i've seen my camera on a tripod fall due lack of brains on my friends' part but some how i never learned my lesson. Most people don't like the size of this camera but i say other wise. Why would you want a camera so tiny that it feels like you can crush it in your hands. On the down side of this camera, after nearly crushing my friends' newer cameras, i fell in love with the LCD that puts this one to shame. I can literally put my thumb over the screen of this camera. But is screen size really what matters? This camera contended with cameras today pretty well. it has an EXCELLENT shutter programer that i found to be more useful than i thought and plenty of mode settings to shoot in all sorts of conditions. i was very impressed with the macro mode in which i shot many things such flowers, weird bugs and we were fortunate enough to be at the right beach at the right time to see baby sea turtles hatch and make they're way to the ocean. beautiful pictures! if you're not happy with just picture, the video side to this camera is also impressive. My friends and I took second place at our high school film festival (that actually sounds pretty lame) using this camera. first place, of course, was a second movie we submitted. the quality of the video is pretty good, depending on what setting you have it on, and USEFUL! if there's ever a moment when pictures just arne't enough, it take little energy and time to switch this camera to video mode. this camera has it all. i highly recommend it. In December 2007-January 2008, my family and I took another trip to Nicaragua. I wasn't able to find enough money to buy a nice dslr(i bought a cheap care instead) so i brought along with me my trusty P93. I can honestly say that i took the best pictures that i have ever taken (with out using my dad's Rebel) with that camera. Sadly, my P93, carrying case, and all 5 memory cards i had bought were all stolen after about a week of being there. It seriously felt like one of my best friends just moved away with warning. coincidentally, before leaving Nicaragua, I saw a guy that had a brand new P93 and he was as happy as could be.
Pros: *VERY STRONG AND DURABLE *comfortable to hold *great shutter programing *doesn't waste batteries quickly *extremely easy to use *unexpectedly good video mode *good sound quality
Cons: *some times i wished i had a bigger screen but then you just get over it *"Only 5.1 megapixels! but i need WAY MORE than that!" Shut Up! sure this camera only has 5.1, but hey! do you really need that much more for a simple point and shoot. it never really got in my way too much. *some times the auto mode tries to get ahead of it's self and just freaks out, better off using program modes *i accidentally cover the microphone with my finger some times
i fell in love with this camera

With 8.1-Megapixel the DSC-T20 delivers clarity to group photos and snapshots for greater detail in big prints. The Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens design along with Face Detection feature optimizes natural tones in faces. High Definition output makes photos look even more spectacular when you share them with friends and family on your HDTV screens. Sony Super HAD(TM) (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. With Super SteadyShot(R) Image Stabilization and high sensitivity ISO 3200, the DSC-T20 compensates for shaky hands, minimizes blur, brightens images and allows flash-free shooting. Sony Clear RAW Noise Reduction reduces the picture noise that can ruin low-light shots. The DSC-T20 lets you add creative effects to photos after you shoot including soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry dazzles at highlight points, partial color filter to mute surrounding colors, even fish-eye filter to create interesting fish-eye lens effects. The DSC-T20 provides up to 380 shots with a fully charged NP-BG1 Lithium Ion battery. 1/2.5-inch Super HAD(TM) CCD Imaging Device Exposure Compensation - 1/3 EV Step Increments Focal Length - 6.33 - 19 mm 35mm Equivalent - 38 - 114 mm Focus - 9 Area Multi-Point AF, Center AF, Spot AF Shutter Speed - 1/4-1/1000 seconds (Auto), 1-1/1000 seconds (Program Auto) Aperture Range - f3.5-5.6 (W), f4.3-10 (T) Self-Timer - 10 seconds, 2 seconds & Off White Balance - Automatic, Cloudy, Daylight, Fluorescent 1, Fluorescent 2, Fluorescent 3, Incandescent & Flash Power Save Mode - After 3 minutes of inactivity In-Camera Editing - Red-eye reduction HD 1080i Output Flash Modes - Auto, Forced On, Forced Off, Slow Synch Scene Modes - Beach, Fireworks, High Sensitivity, High Speed Shutter, Landscape, Snow, Soft Snap, Twilight & Twilight Portrait Operating Sys

Don't lose the moment you want to capture!
The camera is nice and small, definitely an advantage over my old one.
I'm annoyed Sony has to have their own memory card rather than using the SD chip I'm used to - cost me another $70.
My biggest complaint is the menus. They are not intuitive at ALL. My old Kodak has a dial to switch between capture modes. This could be done quickly with ease so I could take a picture and then 5 seconds later start recording a video.
This thing...I was actually too embarrassed to use one night because the event I wanted pictures of had already started and the thing was so noisy with it's little beeps and boops and I couldn't quietly find out how to turn the sound off so as to not disturb those around me.
There is nothing intuitive about switching modes on this thing. Scrolls do not loop bottom/top right/left, so to get to movie mode you've got four buttons to hit.
I've had the camera for two months now and I still have trouble switching modes. You don't go to select, and then hit right to scroll through options. You go to select, OK (which since you haven't done anything is the last thing you think of, THEN hit "Menu" and scroll through options.
And if you want to go back to standard auto, it's not on that selector, it's got a standalone menu.
Every time I try and scroll through options I'm met with error messages that the current mode doesn't support flash/closeup, since the right/left buttons double as the 'quick set' for those, respectively. Of course, I'm not trying to change flash settings at all, just move from ISC/landscape whatever to standard photo.
I don't know how many amazing shots I've missed or had come out blurry because I was in the wrong mode and it took me so long to navigate to the correct mode that I missed the great shot. It may take great pictures, but menus HAVE to be intuitive if you're going to take great pictures of the moments you want.

Excellent Point and Shoot Camera
I purchased this camera after Christmas, so I have had it almost six months. I am very impressed with this camera (I have the silver one that I had purchased at Staples on sale).
>My only problem with this camera is the battery. I have a difficult time keeping it charged. If I want to minimize battery usage, I try to keep my picture viewing at a minimum. For the most part, I can get away with using it for five days until I need to recharge it.
>The screen is amazing, but I am always nervous it might get a scratch on it, because it is so large. It currently has fingerprints all over the screen, which is understandable due to it's large size. (I do not have the touchscreen version)
>My favorite part is the "Program Auto" mode that is on the Home Menu. I find the "White Balances" settings on it to be extremely useful. You can change it from Flourescent 1, 2, 3, Daylight, Cloudy, Incandescent, or Auto. This is the best way for me to get excellent photos in a house (or even outside). I used to leave my camera on the auto mode, but now it's always on Program Auto so I can change the light settings. For me, I think it's as good as the invention of sliced bread!
This is a wonderful camera if you don't mind charging it often. I would highly suggest you buy a spare battery when you get this camera, to save you in case the original dies on you. As I stated earlier, I have enjoyed this camera since December, and plan to use it for many, many months to come. If you are searching for an easy, useful, point-and-shoot camera, it's a good option for you.

You can go 40km per hr, and still get national geographic photos with this awesome camera! It's super Fab! I just bought this for the second time (first cam was stolen after 6 months) and tried a few newer cameras, different models and brands, and decided to hunt down this camera. All the stores told me they are discontinued, so I was SO happy when I found a couple for sale online! High recommended! No flash required, Awesome pics every time!

Questions & Answers
Question : i broke my sony camera, should i invest in a new sony digital camera or buy a canon?
i've heard canon brand is better than sony, but since i already have the battery, charger and memory card i was thinking about getting another sony..
so do i buy a Sony camera or go for a Canon?????
what's your advice?
Answer:
Tough choice, but think the Canon below would really be the best.
Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Please read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.com
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...
Camera reports batteries low, but is it low charge or bad electrical contacts? Overcharging can ruin good batteries! The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between batteries and camera.
Digital cameras require lots of power. Bad electrical contacts can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD screen is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. Bad contacts make cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.
CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be severely damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with safety timer, temperature monitor, and trickle charge technology ($9.76) at Walmart. For longer life, use Duracell 2000mAh batteries and a full cycle charge monthly. To preserve battery charge, use the view finder and not the LCD screen when possible.
There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices.
What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.
Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.
Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.
Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/di

Question : Is it possible to use a third-party Info-lithium replacement battery in a SONY digital camera?
Hi! Please...I have a SONY DSC-S50 Cyber-shot digital camera, and I believe it's time for a battery replacement. The model number on my battery is: NP-FM50. This battery is the original battery and it came with the camera. It's labled as an "infolithium" battery. Please, is it mandatory that I order a SONY replacement battery, in particular, or am I safe in ordering a compatible lithium battery online or elsewhere? If so, which online site is recommended? One site suggested that sometimes third-party batteries don't always work in SONY digital cameras. Sony, naturally, suggests that I use their brand of accessories. I am still quite the novice and any/all advice regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)
Answer:
I've had luck using compatible batteries for my old Sony digicam. But I heard that the newer Sonys have a way of checking if the battery is a genuine Sony infolithium battery.
Best to work with a local seller that has a good return policy - such as Best Buy or Circuit City.
I personally buy most of my rechargable batteries from Thomas Distributing:
http://store.thomas-distributing.com/displayproduct.asp?which=57
I've also had good luck with Battery Barn:

Question : format error on sony digital camera how do i fix it? is there a disc to reset harddrive?
i have a sony mavica model mvc-fd85 digital camera ,when a disc is inserted it says format erroe 13-1,when i try to format disc error message appears ,i believe hard drive is out of whacck.is there any way to reformat hard drive?
Answer:
This is one of the earliest Sony digital cameras that uses regular 3.5" floppy disks. Try formatting other disks in the camera - do you get the same error message? I also suggest formatting the disk with your computer to rule out the possibility that you have some bad disks.
If the problem is not with the disks, then the problem is most likely with the disk drive in the camera. You'll probably need to contact Sony for repairs....or it's time for a new camera.

Question : Problem with the display of a Sony digital camera?
I have a sony digital camera model DSC-T50. Yesterday I saw that there is a gray line across the display. Can this be fixed? And how much will it cost? There is no point in getting a new display, I might as well buy a new camera. If someone has any ideas please help. Thank you in advance.
Answer:
Repair is usually cost prohibitive unless your camera is still under warranty, but maybe you can fix the problem by removing the batteries for at least one minute. This will make the camera reset to the original program settings. You can also clean the battery and camera electrical contacts because this can cause that problem. Check out the source link for this and other ideas.
The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between the batteries and the camera.
Digital cameras require lots of power. If electrical contacts are not really good, this can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD display is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. With bad contacts, cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.

Question : Will any Sony digital camera body work with the older Minolta Rokkor lenses?
I have many good Minolta Rokkor lenses I've used on several Minolta SRT camera bodies. I understand that Sony bought Minolta so will any of the Sony digital bodies fit the Rokkors (like the older Pentax lenses do with current Pentax digitals)?
Answer:
There is an adapter but its hard to find although a visit to the Sony web site might be helpful. Other than that just keep checking on eBay. Unfortunately, when Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 AF camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. Sony now uses the A-mount so any Maxxum AF lens will work just fine on a Sony DSLR.

Question : Can you use a sony memory card on a canon digital camera?
I used to have a sony digital camera and had bought a sony memory card for it but my camera broke and so i got a new one but its a canon. but I want to load the pics that I have on my sony memory card to my computer, can I use it in my canon?
Answer:
each camera uses a certain kind of memory card. Your sony was probably a memory stick, or pro duo or something, the canon, like the last person said, is probably an sd. If you really want to know why didn't you try to shove the old one in the new camera. If it fit and saved a taken picture to it then you know it would work. Genius.

Question : Looking for a good sony digital camera?
I'm wanting a good digital camera, but not something that would cost a million dollars. It can be other brands but I would prefer sony... So I'm looking for a camera that isn't bulky... but I guess most digital camera's aren't. I'd like a good picture quality as in... no random white dots if the lighting source isn't good, or anything like that. Fairly quick picture taking would be lovely... and if the camera's limit is only limited to the memory cards' limit. Also being able to record clips... if there could be some sound. I was looking at some of the lower grades of sony camera and I noticed recording doesn't have sound.
And again, I'd prefer sony, but I guess it doesn't really matter.
Answer:
Since you prefer Sony, here are two pretty well reviewed models of Sony that meet up to your requirements. Both have fast response times and they both take video with audio.
One is the Sony N2

Second is the Sony T100

Personally I would go for the N2 because of its larger sensor but then thats a personal preference because on the other hand, the T100 is VERY compact.
