Great outdoor camera, terrible indoors!

I bought this camera May 2008 after my previous Sony W1 was stolen. I needed a replacement quickly so I didn't do any research or read online reviews. (I had owned 2 previous Sony cameras, so I was confident I would get a good product.) I was a little skeptical about the smaller compact size, but on the first day I owned it I walked outside and took a few shots of my landscape (very colorful, as I have lots of flowers) and I was pleased. Kept it the rest of the summer, taking mostly outdoor (poolside & landscape shots). I also fell in love with it's small size, making it a dream to carry in a pocket or purse. I found a small zipper cover at Staples that fits it's perfectly (for only $10, compared to Sony's $40 soft-case). It wasn't until we had a family gathering in the fall that I realized the down-side of this camera. Most of the indoor pictures are grainy & just not very crisp. The camera struggles in lower light conditions, even in a moderately lit room. If a flash is used, faces look white & washed out and eyes are always red. Of course, editing eyes is always an option, but this gets old when you have to edit every single indoor photo you take. However, I'm still a fan of Sony cameras, so I'm trading this one for a more expensive model. I'm hoping the DSC-H10 or H50 will make he a happier camper! Again, if you just need to take outdoor shots, like on your job or something, this is a fantastic camera. If you need good clear pics of people indoors (like weddings, dinners, parties, etc) DON'T count on this one.

Another Great Sony Digital Camera!

I've had this camera for a year, and all I can say is WOW. This is my third Sony digital camera, and I have never been disappointed with any of them. If you're an amatuer photographer, just looking for something to take pictures for the web, or you want to get good family shots, this is a fantastic little workhorse at a price that will fit almost any budget.

My biggest reason for loving this camera is the double anti-blur technology. The drawback of these newer, lighter cameras is that they are more diffcult to hold steady, and I have always had trouble getting a good, clear shot without shaking a bit anyway. How many times have you taken a dozen shots of the same thing in the hopes of getting one decent, clear picture? You'll never have to take more than one shot again with this camera-- you get crystal clear results *every single time*, even if you purposely wave it around. The 7.1 megapixel images are MORE than plenty to get great printed images (and the video is nothing to sneeze at either!).

Don't be thrown off by images of the camera itself. It's actually very small and lightweight. The battery lasts a long time, but takes a long time to charge (one of my only complaints), and you can get a single memory stick PRO duo in a 1 or 2 gig size at a low price, which will hold LOTS of pictures. I do wish it took a standard SD card. That, and the long battery charging time make this a four star product instead of five for me.

If you're shopping for a digital camera, this is a great choice even though it's been out for at least over a year. However, be sure you also check out the updated model, Sony Cybershot DSCW150 8.1MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot (Silver), and compare the features. Overall I still highly recommend this camera!

Do not buy this Camera

I got this camera last year to replace my Canon SD10 which i loved and i still love becasue it works better than this new DSC-W80. It takes blurry pictures, shutter is too slow and its just a piece of junk. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! and trust me there is no operator error, i owned many cameras and i know how to take a picture.

An outstanding pocket camera

I bought the Sony DSC-W80 on clearance from Compusa 9 months ago. I had went in hoping to score a Canon SD-1000, but the DSC-W80 was on of the alternates I was considering and the price was right. Right after I bought, I found out my sister in law went into labor and my niece was going to be born that evening. Needless to say the camera got a work out right then. First off, in low light situations, especially without the flash, the images will get really grainy. My understanding is that this is because to make these cameras so small, the photosensor is very small as well, which means it won't work as well in a low light environment, if this concerns you, step up to a slightly large point and shoot digital camera, it won't be pocket sized, but you'll get better low light images.

I was able to get great photo's and videos of my nieces birth with a 1gb memory stick installed, but I did notice the low light issue, again, that's the trade off for a camera this small, so I can live with it. Since then, I carry this camera with me all of the time, and it works great, I can usually get by with charging the battery once a week, and downloading the photos off at the same time. The thing takes outstanding photo's, I use it at the highest resolution for photo's and they are very sharp. When I'm shooting movies, I use standard quality, and get a decent balance between image quality and file size, the built in mike does a remarkable job picking up audio while shooting videos.

Considering this camera was my second choice it has been a welcome surprise that has done a remarkably good job as a constant carry camera. Now I just need a DSLR....

Overall, disappointed

My wife bought this camera about 10 months ago, in (long advance) preparation for a trip this winter. She has been using a Nikon Coolpix 8700 that she's very pleased with, but wanted something pocketable. She has some balance issues, so the "Steady Shot" image stabilization was attractive. After reading reviews in a leading consumer publication, she bought the DSC-W80.

Positives: Outdoors, it does very well. Colors are warm and true. The image stabilization works well (I have a mild hand tremor, so I'm a good tester...) Sharpness is acceptable.

Negatives: Indoors, not so hot. As has been posted elswhere, when the camera is faced with dim illumination, the in-camera processing creates a lot of noise, which obliterates most detail in the images. The flash is feeble, and somewhat slow to fire. It commonly produces a "hot spot" in the center of the image, rather than even lighting. The menu system is much less intuitive than on the Nikons we both have, or on some of the Canons I've been looking at. One of the strangest things I have run into is that you can set the size of the captured file (i.e. number of MP), but not the display resolution. For example, a 7MP image comes up on screen as a 72 px/inch, 42.67 X 32 inch image. If you bring that image up on screen in Photoshop, and zoom in to 100%, you're looking at an oddly pixelated image for what should be your highest quality setting. The only cure I've found for on-screen viewing is to run it through Photoshop and resize it both by size and by pixels/inch. Now maybe that's just a Sony oddity that has only stymied me, but I thought it was worth putting out there. Hopefully this is useful information for you.

Had this for years!

I have had this phone since it came out in 2001. It takes great pictures - even still! The only thing is there is no sound with the video/movie recordings, but the pictures are still awesome 7 years later! People make fun of my big bulky camera but they are speechless when it comes to the camera. I wouldnt change it for the world!

Good camera, resistant and long lasting battery

I bought this camera through amazon.com two years ago, and I still use it a lot. I bought a more advanced model of the panasonic lumix one because I wanted to try a different brand (nothing really bad ever happened to this one, I just wanted a newer one). It is indeed a good camera, and I took amazing pictures of it, plus the videos. It comes with a built in mic, which is good, and the battery runs out pretty slow, which is great. I cant remember how many times I may have dropped it and it is still sturdy and fine. The pictures come out good, except when there is very little lights, then, it may get blurry. The other con is that even though it says it corrects red eyes, it never did the job well, but I dont know if that is common or not with other brands too (also, I like altering the pictures myself, so the red eyes ain't that big of a deal, I would say).
It is definitely NOT the best camera in the world, but if you're looking for something practical, small and handy, this one can be the one. The 7.2 MP model sold much more, and it is the exact same camera with a bit more definition.

Decent camera but we're buying another one

My wife and I bought this camera for travel and family photos. It may be that we just haven't figured out how to determine what settings are necessary but picture quality is not consistent. Landscape shots seem to be very nice even though we would like to have more zoom than 3x. Indoor shots have never turned out well for us. Very difficult to capture moving shots and some shots seem to have a lot of noise, especially in ISO setting. Camera is fairly intuitive and I love the size of it. But we're looking for a different camera after 3 years because we just can't take the bad pictures anymore.
Pros:
Size
Look
Battery life
Quick start-up
Good landscape shots
Cons:
Inconsistent picture quality
Poor indoor shots
Slow shut-down

A good camera with a fatal flaw

I've had this camera for almost two years now, and have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it. It's a fabulous little machine, takes super-fast pictures, is wonderfully compact yet functional, and I hardly ever need to use the flash which saves me on constant battery charging. It has everything going for it... except the fact that it has now broken twice in the same way.

When you turn on the camera, the lens moves in and out of its own accord, and the screen stays blank with only the word "Access". Nothing you press has any effect, except possibly to conjure up the message "Turn camera off and on again" which never ever works. This is not fun.

It seems to have happened around the same time each of these past two years, which is incredibly frustrating. The first time, it was still under warranty so I paid for shipping and Sony fixed it for me, which was fine. But the second time was the last straw. I'm currently studying abroad, and like to take lots of pictures to remember my trip by, but after talking to Sony's online customer support (which was as helpful as they could be, I suppose) I realized that the only way to fix it was to send it in, AGAIN. Grr. I really love the way this camera works, and think it takes fabulous pictures. And I want to buy another Sony camera because this one has done such a good job... BUT I'm not sure I'm willing to risk this happening all over again.

I realize this camera's not really on the market any more, so this probably doesn't even matter, but I would say there are few enough people who've had this problem that it shouldn't necessarily discourage someone from buying the camera, although I think people should be warned. It sounds like this issue crops up with other Sony products, from reviews I've been looking at. Yet, what digital camera is perfect? Every brand has its own quirks and screw-ups, I suppose. What frustrates me most about this one is the repetition of the problem, especially when no probable cause can be identified.

Great camera...

Takes good pictures, wasn't horribly expensive. I got this for my girlfriend a year ago and so far she has loved it. The rolling wheel menu is a really cool feature. If you're going for a compact digital I highly recommend the Sony ones in general along with Canon. Both are excellent. This one hasn't let down.

Nice outdoor, daylight pictures. Otherwise, hit or miss

I bought this camera from a large retail chain about 3 years ago (yes, the model is that old). First thing I must say: The price here is ridiculous for this camera. Its not worth $388, or whatever they have it listed for. That said, onto the pros and cons:

PROS
- Takes EXCELLENT pictures in any type of daylight (even mostly cloudy skies), including beautiful sunrise and sunset pictures (so long as its not too far along). Great clarity, excellent color, and wonderful balance. Can't beat this camera there.
- The movie setting is quite good. Not HD, but it doesn't have a limit on the video length (like many point-and-shoots do). If you have the memory, you can take as long a video as you want.
On that same note, the mic on this is actually quite good! Excellent for recording convos or even concerts (as long as you aren't standing right in front of the speakers).
- The camera does have a lot of settings, and the ability to create a 'custom' setting too by moving around ISO, flash, zoom, balance, and other settings.
- Macro mode is nice for up close shots
- The battery lasts FOREVER! On one charge, I've gotten 250 pics and a couple 2 minute videos while using the preview screen quite generously (still had some life too). Use a couple of the power save options, and I have no doubts you could easily hit 350-400 pictures on one charge.
- Turn it on, and a second later you can take a picture. Another second, and you can take another picture. Very quick turnaround.
- ISO setting isn't terrible (not great either) at taking low light pics w/o flash. Pics tend to be grainy though.
- Great, clear lens and a decent optical zoom (the digital zoom is fine, but I find using it tends to make it difficult to get a non-blurry shot).

CONS
- The root of many of this camera's problems: NO image stabilization feature! Be prepared to delete or re-take half of your pictures because of this, unless you have nerve and stability of an army sniper. W/o the flash in anything but direct sunlight, you are in trouble. Even with the flash, you need to hold the camera as still as possible. This wouldn't be as a big an issue, but...
- The 2.5 inch LCD is decent sized, but its difficult to see how good the picture actually is UNTIL you see it on your computer. So, you may take 10 pictures and think you have 10 winners, but turns out only 2 or 3 are keepers.
- The click/rotating wheel that has chooses one of the 10 modes of the camera is very easily turned by accident. Thus, you get the perfect shot, click the shutter...and find out that the camera was actually on video mode. Shot missed. Disappointment abounds.
- These 10 functions are also...shall we say...questionable as to there actual operation. Let me say this: Out of the 10 modes, I use just 3 of them (Auto, Landscape, and Video) 98% of the time. The others are pretty specific to certain scenarios, and I question if a couple of them actually do anything special (one setting is for beach shots, and it reportedly 'accentuates' the blue color. Compared to an auto beach shot, I can see no difference between the two).
- The flash has a 'groove zone', which I have found is about 4 to 6 feet away. Anywhere outside of that zone, and the flash does not perform as well. Closer and people look like they are bio-luminescent. Further away, and things start getting shadowy. There's also no options to change the flash intensity (fill, close, etc). So, you get the same flash each time. Red Eye is tough to avoid too. The flash indicator/RE light helps SOMETIMES (70% of the time), but the slow-synchro flash option is only effective maybe 15% of the time.
- Taking shots at night is the worst. Blurry without the flash, and the flash is usually too weak to make the shot look good regardless. The 'twilight modes' are also useless, as the lack of image stabilization comes back into play.
- Small quips: In video mode, you can't zoom at all while recording. You can only stop, zoom, and restart. Settings and features are not intuitive, but a quick read of the manual usually suffices. Cyber-shot software is awful. It runs EXTREMELY slow, doesn't offer many features compared to EasyShare, and its red eye fix (arguably the most used aspect of basic editing software) makes eyes look gray, dead, and unnatural.

This camera isn't bad, and has some nice features. However, image stabilization, IMO, is the reason why this camera isn't recommended.

Best Camera I have ever owned!

My fiance purchased this camera for me for Christmas and I could not have asked for a better gift. It takes GREAT pictures, is easy to use, and I haven't had a blurry shot.
If you are looking for professional photos, skip it, but it is the best you are going to get for your money with a point and shoot. The zoom is also AMAZING. I can get things all the way from the front of my yard to the back of my yard. The touch screen also makes things easier.

Wish I had done more research...

This was the second digital camera that I have owned. My first one was also a Sony Cybershot, but it was very large and bulky. Since I didn't have problems with my first Cybershot, I decided to stick with Sony because it was an all around good brand. After doing some research for a couple of days, I finally settled on this camera. The touch screen seemed really high-tech and I liked how it came in black.

When I first got the camera, getting used to the touch screen didn't take too long. My main problem with the touch screen is that it gets dirty really fast. Also, simple things like turning off the flash would've just been one button push on my other camera, but with the touch screen everything takes longer to find. It's not fun to deal with, especially if you're a little tipsy LOL.

I love how small and light this camera is. It easily fits into my clutch or back pocket. I kind of regret getting black because when it gets scratched, you can really tell.

All in all, I feel like the picture quality was even worse than my previous camera. As I continued to use and get used to my camera, I wished that there were more features to let me maniuplate the camera settings. You can program this camera to "indoor" or "outdoor", but I wanted more control over the aperature and f-stop. It's a nice camera if you just want to snap and go, but next time I'll take more time when looking into a camera.

Make sure you get a memory stick for this as well, because the memory alone is pretty crappy. My favorite part of the camera is the ease with which it allows me to record small videos for YouTube. Other than that, I've used better cameras.

Not for Professional Photographers

1. This is not a camera for professional photographers. This IS a camera for those who take lots of outdoor shots, those who like the convenience of a small camera, and those who like Sony.

2. This is not a great camera for indoors/low light conditions. This is a great camera for action shots (when placed on the right settings).

3. I LOVE this camera for what I do, which is a lot of close up still life type shots. It hooks up to my HDTV and plays the most beautiful slideshows I've ever seen. The 8mp may be too much for some, but I tend to print large scale photos from my digital files, and the 8mp is PERFECT for me.

4. Being a Sony person, I have several MS Duo sticks laying around. Anyone who's got a kid with a PSP will know these aren't obsolete. I like the fact that the MS Duo isn't tiny, like some of the SD kin. I hate fubmling for a teeny-tiny little card and being afraid I'm going to lose it. I don't have that problem with this camera.

5. I really, really love the touch screen. It's big, beautiful, clear and responsive. I did put a screen protector on it as soon as I had it in my hands, so that it wouldn't get scratched. But it's stood up to 6 yr old hands many times without damage.

6. This camera is a great size for a 'Mom on the go' because it slips into a purse or back pocket very easily. The internal zoom has got to be one of the coolest things ever. I love that I can get the shot when others with their standard zooms can not.

7. All in all I would most certainly recommend this camera. It takes a little while to play with the settings and learn how to use it, but it's well worth it. It takes great photos, has a great form factor, and is very reliable.

Question : Can you use a sony memory card on a canon digital camera?
I used to have a sony digital camera and had bought a sony memory card for it but my camera broke and so i got a new one but its a canon. but I want to load the pics that I have on my sony memory card to my computer, can I use it in my canon?

Answer:
each camera uses a certain kind of memory card. Your sony was probably a memory stick, or pro duo or something, the canon, like the last person said, is probably an sd. If you really want to know why didn't you try to shove the old one in the new camera. If it fit and saved a taken picture to it then you know it would work. Genius.

Question : Looking for a good sony digital camera?
I'm wanting a good digital camera, but not something that would cost a million dollars. It can be other brands but I would prefer sony... So I'm looking for a camera that isn't bulky... but I guess most digital camera's aren't. I'd like a good picture quality as in... no random white dots if the lighting source isn't good, or anything like that. Fairly quick picture taking would be lovely... and if the camera's limit is only limited to the memory cards' limit. Also being able to record clips... if there could be some sound. I was looking at some of the lower grades of sony camera and I noticed recording doesn't have sound. And again, I'd prefer sony, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

Answer:
Since you prefer Sony, here are two pretty well reviewed models of Sony that meet up to your requirements. Both have fast response times and they both take video with audio. One is the Sony N2 Here is a link with info and review : http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/n2.html Second is the Sony T100 Here is a link with info and review : http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/sony_t100.html Personally I would go for the N2 because of its larger sensor but then thats a personal preference because on the other hand, the T100 is VERY compact. Here is a link to a site where you can compare image and video quality : http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=1&ma1=32&mo1=&p1=2049&ma2=31&mo2=&p2=1450&ph=5 Good luck!

Answer:

Question : Problem with the display of a Sony digital camera?
I have a sony digital camera model DSC-T50. Yesterday I saw that there is a gray line across the display. Can this be fixed? And how much will it cost? There is no point in getting a new display, I might as well buy a new camera. If someone has any ideas please help. Thank you in advance.

Answer:
Repair is usually cost prohibitive unless your camera is still under warranty, but maybe you can fix the problem by removing the batteries for at least one minute. This will make the camera reset to the original program settings. You can also clean the battery and camera electrical contacts because this can cause that problem. Check out the source link for this and other ideas. The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between the batteries and the camera. Digital cameras require lots of power. If electrical contacts are not really good, this can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD display is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. With bad contacts, cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.

Question : Will any Sony digital camera body work with the older Minolta Rokkor lenses?
I have many good Minolta Rokkor lenses I've used on several Minolta SRT camera bodies. I understand that Sony bought Minolta so will any of the Sony digital bodies fit the Rokkors (like the older Pentax lenses do with current Pentax digitals)?

Answer:
There is an adapter but its hard to find although a visit to the Sony web site might be helpful. Other than that just keep checking on eBay. Unfortunately, when Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 AF camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. Sony now uses the A-mount so any Maxxum AF lens will work just fine on a Sony DSLR.
