Great Camera

I have used this camera for 2 years now and I could not be happier. It takes great pictures! I have the added many accessories and this is a great little camera. It is compact and easy to use.

Very sturdy and reliable

I have had this camera for about 2.5 years and just replaced it with a newer model. But I have to say that I was delighted in having this camera with me and the results have been fantastic. Some of the plus points -
1. Battery Life. I can charge the camera, go over a weekend trip and click 500 photographs with about 20 videos of 30 seconds each and still have battery left.
2. Flash - It has a very strong flash. You will not need any external lighting.
3. Sturdiness and Reliability - I went to sea world and was capturing a video, when all of a sudden a stream of water came and hit the camera. It got all wet, i tried to dry it but lens also got hold of some water. I tried to capture some sea world pics, but they were blurry and I thought that now I will have to buy a new piece. Came back home. The next day, tried it again and it was back to normal! Not a hint that it was sprayed with water. The picture quality was good as ever.
4. The variety of manual features and the settings you can do with this camera are outrageous. I found out about them pretty late, but was pleasently surprised with the results. The night shots with long exposures were just tremendous.
5. LCD screen is just gorgeous.

Cons -
1. It does not have a very good macro mode.
2. Not for unstable hands. Its not hard to get a blurry image.

I have fallen in love with Sony over quality. I am trying out a Canon SD 770 powershot now and will see how it fares in comparison with this old camera.

It's so great...I bought two!

I originally purchased the Sony Cybershot camera in a periwinkle color they had out. I loved my camera so much I took it everywhere with me. It is a great point and shoot camera that takes amazingly crisp pictures. It has a setting for every scenario and you can size your pictures to fit your media needs. It has an option so that pictures are in email form and small enough to zip through the internet. If you'd rather a higher quality picture you can use the 7.2 megapixel capacity and have a crisp, clean shot.
This camera was so popular amongst my friends that someone ended up stealing mine. Since I loved it so much I couldn't go without one and ending up buying another in the red. I have had no problems with this camera and absolutely love it. It is also great to set up on a tripod and take family photos. I have had better luck with the zoom and quality of these photos than many of the professional photos I've had taken. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone.

Give it time and it will malfunction on you..great while it lasts

Great camera...at first, I had it for years then all the sudden, the lens woudn't open and it says "Turn the power off and on again". So I sent it in to sony (still under warranty) and they fixed it and sent it back. A year and half later the same exact thing happened. Now here I am, out of warranty and without a working camera. I did have this camera for about 5 years though. If you bought this camera and can still take it back, I would definitely do that.

Absolutely Love this camera!!

I've been using this camera for over a year now and I absolutely love it. It takes great crisp pictures in deep colors colors, the battery lasts forever, lots of setting for every occasion ( I took some excellent pictures at dusk and in low light conditions). You need to get used to it in the beginning and figure out the settings and modes, but once you do - it's awesome!

Graphics Designer/Photographer

I'm a happy camper. I purchased my SONY MAVICA MVC-CD500 digital camera in 2002 when it was first marketed. As of this writing it's 2007 and I use it almost daily in my work. It's been a great workhorse. It plugs directly into iPhoto on my Mac - transferring images is quick and seamless.

I've not experienced any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned. I suppose, like with ANY product, the occasional lemon comes off the line. My camera has given me years of perfect performance!

I don't use all the features: For instance - if I want sepia tone photos or special effects I take them into PhotoShop and work there. The photos I get from the CD-500 are crisp, clear and high resolution so it makes editing them a breeze.

This reviewer gives the CD-500 two thumbs up. It's the best digital camera I've used.

Do NOT buy this camera .. please, I beg you.

I had a Sony Mavica 400 and it worked beautifully for 4 years. I never, ever had a problem with it, and it went everywhere with me. I took around 8,000 photos with it and it was wonderful. But then it was stolen from around my neck by a gang of thugs in St Petersburg, Russia in 2005.

The insurance company replaced the 400 with this model, the MVCCD500, which I was very excited about getting - the next-generation model, with improved picture quality and more megapixels. How wrong I was to be excited.

This piece of junk lasted a total of 6 months before it suddenly stopped doing what it was meant to do. It suddenly and without warning wasn't able to access a disc that hadn't been finalised, and after changing batteries it wasn't able to access the disc. To top this off, it also now can't write any photo taken on 5 megapixels - all I get is a 'Disc Error' everytime I take a 5 megapixel photo. I now have to finalise the disc when the battery gets low, and I have to be very, very careful the back door (where the CD-R goes in) and the battery door don't open .

I relocated to the UK soon after getting this camera, and Sony UK refused to honour the 'Worldwide Warranty', even though I had the receipt and the warranty with me. As the camera came from Australia, Sony refused to even deal with me - they told me I had to talk to Sony Australia ... on the other side of the planet, and then asked me to leave their premises!

I am now struggling to take ANY photos with this thing. It is now out of warranty, only takes 1 in 3 photos properly (none in 5 megapixels), and to top it all off, the 8cm CD-R's are next to impossible to buy outside the USA. And you can't even mail-order them from the US - no shop will sell them overseas. Sony couldn't even help me to locate a supplier of the CD-R's in the UK, even when they featured the Sony CD-R's on the Sony UK web site. In response to my enquiry regarding the discs, I was told they couldn't help me and suggested I do a search on an internet search engine for them. (Gee Sony, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the help.) I eventually found one shop in central London that sells them. When this shop stops selling them, the camera will be a useless paperweight.

If you are stupid enough to buy this camera, expect it to stop working within a year of buying it, and expect zero support from Sony. In fact, just expect abuse from Sony when it stops working.

I have just bought a Nikon D80, and am thrilled with the brilliance of this camera. Buy a digital camera from a manufacturer of real cameras, not a company that produces junk. Obviously Sony have given up on this technology, and tough luck if you were fooled into buying it. My assumption is they are no longer supporting the Mavica technology and refuse to have anything to do with any customer that owns one.

Lots of problems

I have had a Sony Mavica for the past two years and I have been having a lot of problems with it. In fact I just got it back today from the service department in Tx and it still doesn't work. The screen went blank one day, just wouldn't show photos on the LCD. I sent it into Sony free of charge and a new LCD was placed in the camera. When I got the camera back there was a distinct color shift. The colors look correct on the LCD, but on all other devices my photos are magenta instead of red, which make my kids look purple. I can color correct in Photo Shop, but for a $500.00 camera it is turning out to be a real boat anchore. Save your money, buy anything but Sony. The second round of service cost me a whopping $223.00. Which now makes my boat anchore worth $723.00.

My $800 camera only worked for a couple years!

It was great, while it lasted. Although it's too heavy to take on every trip and take those impulsive candid shots. It fits in my diaper bag, but not my purse. About 6 months ago (after 18 months of ownership) we started having trouble getting it to turn on. My husband figured out a "trick" to turn it on (push down on the button while pushing the lever), which worked for a month or so. Then suddenly, the problem disappeared. Yippee! Now, with Christmas less than a month away, it WON'T TURN ON AT ALL!!! I cannot explain how furious I am. It's not like I can send it for repair and have it back by the holidays. My other complaint is with the batteries. Over time, they last less and less..... and take longer and longer to charge up. You will definitely need more than 2 batteries after a while. My next camera will NOT be a Sony. IT's not like we were rough with it; we treated that thing with more care than the baby... and it still busted. grrrr.....

Least Expensive Media in Digital Cameras - Great

The Sony Mavica series started it all with the Floppy disk Cameras ( that are still the most popular camera for internet pictures.)
Starting with the Mavica MVC CD1000 20X Zoom Sony did it again..
Mini Compact disks, the CD1000 could only use read only disks - CD-Rs.
With the CD200 Sony set real lead in Media with a camera that uses CD-R and rewriteable CD-RW disks. General Cost 50 cents for a CD-R and $2 bucks for a rewriteable CD-RW.
Using the Small ring in CDrom drives the mini CDs work just like a normal full sized CD. Capacity from 150 to 220 Megabits, or 200 to 2500 pictures depending on your selected resolution for each picture.
With all the newer operating systems XP ect the Camera Scanner wizards and viewers make it Childs play to download pictures and look at them. The camera is easy to use, anyone can pick it up and soon be taking digital pictures.
The entire series of Mavica MVC CDs are great.. with the CD500 at 5 megapixels with upgraded Lazers and CCDs is the top of the line.

the best digital camera ever~!

Hi~! I bought this model without knowing that i was getting a piece of jewel~! It's very quick, its image quality is really supreme~! no noise, and the video quality is awesome~! I used several canon and other sony's... but they all had a lot of noise. It is a shame that i was stolen recently... I hope Sony is releasing another product this good. But I bought the W85 last month, but am very disappointed by its high noise and slow speed, and bad video quality.

Nice Little Camera

I have used this camera for several years and I have enjoyed it. If you have extra batteries and memory sticks it helps alot! The only reason I am in the market for a new camera is that I would like the image stabilization feature. I have never really done anything special regarding settings and focus etc., and have been satisfied overall with this camera.

This camera won't last!

I agree with most of the other negative reviews here- focus problems!! My camera lens is now stuck, and the camera is completely inoperable. It is about 2 years old, so I did get some good use out of it, but I am upgrading. Different brand this time!!

this was recalled in japan and china

there are bad reviews all over the internet about this camera. there are multiple problems, one being a circuit board that goes bad and causes the camera to cease operating -- lens retraction and opening problems (constant power off/ power on messages). just search online for the model number and "problem" or "lens" and you'll see what i mean.

this camera was one of 6 sony models that were recalled in china and japan back in 2005 when they came out.

BUT SONY NEVER DID A NORTH AMERICAN RECALL!!!

what a rip off!!!!

A disappointment

This is my second Sony digital camera. My first was a 4.1 megapixel DSC-S85. It took great pictures -- never blurry -- in all light situations. My only complaint was that as one of the first generation digital cameras, the shutter lag was horrible! So, I had high hopes for the DSC-W5 when my husband gave it to me for Christmas two years ago. While the shutter lag was much improved, I quickly learned that this new camera did not do so well in low light, and if my hand moved in the slightest or unless our children sat less than absolutely still while taking a picture (those of you with kids are laughing right now, right?), the photo came out blurry. However, I became more disappointed when we had owned the camera for just under a year and the dial that allows you to move between modes started malfunctioning. Every time I tried to switch it to review mode, it would stay in camera mode. It was impossible to review photos unless the dial was set precariously between movie mode and review mode. We sent the camera back to Sony, and to their credit, they fixed it within a couple of weeks with no charge. However, it's been about a year since the repair and the dial is starting to malfuction again. The camera is also starting to eat batteries like crazy -- even the expensive rechargable kind. I wish I could recommend this camera since I was so satisfied with the photo quality of the DCS-S85. However, after two years worth of problems with the W5, my advice is to keep looking.

Don't be fooled by it's cute design

So I waited and saved up to buy THIS camera. I had to have it after seeing how cute it was and hearing about all of its features including the supposedly Super SteadyShot stabilization. So finally, I bought it and I must say, for the price, it has been a let down. Don't get me wrong, it's VERY cute and small - easily fitting into a pocket or purse. And some of the features are very nice, like the flip down front to turn on and off, but the negatives outweigh the positives. Use your $300+ dollars towards a SLR camera or save yourself some money and buy a cheaper camera. This one is not worth it. I made the mistake of not returning it a few days after I got it, thinking I just didn't know how to use it properly. If anyone reads this review and still wants a barely used t10, contact me!

My major problems inlcude:

**Even though it has "Super SteadyShot stabilization" I still get blurry pictures just like I would with any other camera. I don't see this amazing technology Sony claims this camera possesses.

**There's something wrong with the design of the camera and the flash being so close the the lens. This results in large reflective circles appearing in some of your pictures for no apparent reason and it's impossible to repair the image once this has happened. You never know when they will appear and it results in the picture being ruined. Sony acknowledges the problem but offers no solution. They claim it's due to "dust particles in the air."

**The next MAJOR problem is red eye. I have never experienced such terrible red eye problems on any camera. There is a red eye reduction setting which does ABSOLUTEY NOTHING.

**The camera is cute and small, but the cord that comes with it to transfer pictures resembles an octopus. Sony attempted to make an "all-in-one" cord for this camera, but ended up making a nuissance. I like to carry the camera and cord in one small case so, if need be, I can transfer my pictures to a computer whenever I like. This cord makes that impossible because although the camera is tiny in size, this cord would take up half my purse! It may seem trivial, but it's a pain to me.

DO NOT BUY!!!

I REPEAT!!!...do not buy this camera..or any other sony camera for that matter....Many people, including myself, have experienced a very simple but devastating problem with it. IT WILL NOT TURN ON. The battery is fully charged and nothing. I tested the battery in another camera and it worked fine so the problem is with the camera. And by the way, i find it kind of funny how everybody that i have spoken to who has this problem mentioned that it didn't happen until after the 1 year warranty had expired. Save yourself the heartache that you will experience in little over a year and stay away from Sony!!

Great little camera!

I think this camera is great!
It just amazes me how people bad mouth things that are not perfect.
I got a great deal for $179.99 at Officemax back in August 2007.

Pros:
Perfect compact size, and takes great pictures. I take it everywhere
Great price!
Everyone I show my pictures too always says, wow you camera takes good pictures".
Easy to use!
Flip the door down to turn on is very cool.

Cons:
I do notice the white spots every now and then, but it is not all the time.
And yes it has a monsterous all in one chord, but so what?
And no one likes the red-eye reduction mode everyone says they go blind from it,
so I had to turn it off. and now all my pics have red eye.

So do not listen to all the bad reviews here, this is a great little camera.
I am very happy with my purchase.

the camera looks sexy and sleek but the pictures are sloppy

This was my first digital camera and was very excited (and carried away) how sleek and sexy looking this camera was. Once I started taking pictures, my resentment started growing - pictures are not crisp (a 3.0 MP camera would do better), flash is poor, spots appear in the picture (thought it was some dirt on the lens but no, that wasn't it).

Overall, if you want stylish and cool (looking) camera, go for it. If you want good pictures, stay away from it.

Note: The picture may look crisp and clear when you view them on the LCD but when you download them onto your PC, you'll regret. So, it is a good choice if you're using this to take snaps and show to friends and not serious about printing or downloading them.

SIMPLY THE BEST

I have owned a few various Sony digital camera's, but Sony has out-done themselves with this one. the DSC-T50 is simply the best camera I have ever owned. It is simple to navigate through the menu yet "dummy proof" with taking pictures. I upgraded to the 3in LCD screen because my kids love seeing the videos and pictures immediately afterwards. The camera is light small and compact to fit in any pocket attire, and also quick to respond upon opening to catch those unforgettable moments dealing with my kids.

Absolutely Wonderful Product!

This camera works great! Took in on vacation to a number of international destinations, and it worked flawlessly and took excellent pics! Easy to use, and especially loved the sliding lens cover/on-off functionality...just slide the front of the camera down to turn on rather than fumbling for a tiny on/off button. made taking pics quick and easy. Zoom and image stabilizer worked great! Large LCD is excellent, even in bright daylight! and the touchscreen was the best! The slim size is also a great plus and I could carry it around in my pocket with no added bulkiness! Absolutely wonderful product and I give it my highest recommendation!

Awesome Camera

am not a professional photographer, and thats not what this camera is made for. So I dont know why people are whining about picture quality, I am going from a Canon SD300, and the pictures on the Sony look much better. Plus I got a great deal on a black unit for $280.00 direct from Sony! I just wish it was a tad smaller. I think this model is so much better looking then the T-100 and I love the touch screen, which is one reason I opted out of the T-100 and saved $120.

Question : How do you download pictures from the internal memory of the sony digital camera?
Sony digital camera, USB cable Windows 2000, XP

Answer:

Question : Problem with the display of a Sony digital camera?
I have a sony digital camera model DSC-T50. Yesterday I saw that there is a gray line across the display. Can this be fixed? And how much will it cost? There is no point in getting a new display, I might as well buy a new camera. If someone has any ideas please help. Thank you in advance.

Answer:
Repair is usually cost prohibitive unless your camera is still under warranty, but maybe you can fix the problem by removing the batteries for at least one minute. This will make the camera reset to the original program settings. You can also clean the battery and camera electrical contacts because this can cause that problem. Check out the source link for this and other ideas. The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between the batteries and the camera. Digital cameras require lots of power. If electrical contacts are not really good, this can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD display is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. With bad contacts, cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.

Question : Is it possible to use a third-party Info-lithium replacement battery in a SONY digital camera?
Hi! Please...I have a SONY DSC-S50 Cyber-shot digital camera, and I believe it's time for a battery replacement. The model number on my battery is: NP-FM50. This battery is the original battery and it came with the camera. It's labled as an "infolithium" battery. Please, is it mandatory that I order a SONY replacement battery, in particular, or am I safe in ordering a compatible lithium battery online or elsewhere? If so, which online site is recommended? One site suggested that sometimes third-party batteries don't always work in SONY digital cameras. Sony, naturally, suggests that I use their brand of accessories. I am still quite the novice and any/all advice regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)

Answer:
I've had luck using compatible batteries for my old Sony digicam. But I heard that the newer Sonys have a way of checking if the battery is a genuine Sony infolithium battery. Best to work with a local seller that has a good return policy - such as Best Buy or Circuit City. Answer:
dont try any softwares.. just connect your cam to ur computer .. some times it will automatically detects ur camera memory card as a new drive like h: i: etc in my computer.. if it doesnt works , buy a new mmc card reader.. it costs so cheap.. and use that memory card reader to transfer files from card to computer.. use photoshop fore image enhancement than using local softwares with the camera .. and u can use picassa for foto organising .. a better free software from google.. it can also import foto from ur cameras http://picasa.google.com/download/ picasa link ... try it

Question : What is the estimated useful life of a Sony digital camera?
anyone know the expected useful life of a sony digital camera? filling out a fixed assets form..

Answer:
There must be a table for this somewhere. I'd expect it to become "obsolete" after 3 years, even though it is still functioning. If you plan on buying a new one in 3 years, I'd call the useful life 3 years. I'd expect it to need repair or replacement in 5-to-7 years, though, if you don't drop the thing. You don't say which camera, but most entry-level DSLR's seem to have a shutter rated at 50,000 cycles, so any point and shoot would be at that level or lower, I am sure. How many pictures do you take per year? Divide that into 50,000 for a maximum life span and I think it would be 100% defensible on audit.

Question : How to recognize GENUINE Sony digital camera and memory ?
If go for shopping sony digital camera and memory cards, prices vary drastically (more than 10%) from shop to shop. can any body tell me how to recognize GENUINE Sony digital camera and memory? Most of the fake memory cards are being sold on the Internet via eBay ... eBay is doing its best to stop this, but fake cards are still being sold. http://members.shaw.ca/fakesandisk/ http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Fake_Memory_Cards http://martybugs.net/articles/fakesandisk.cgi http://www.digicamhelp.com/accessories/memory-cards/counterfeit.php In the US, cards purchased in reputable electronics and camera stores are the real deal.

Question : Can you use a sony memory card on a canon digital camera?
I used to have a sony digital camera and had bought a sony memory card for it but my camera broke and so i got a new one but its a canon. but I want to load the pics that I have on my sony memory card to my computer, can I use it in my canon?

Answer:
each camera uses a certain kind of memory card. Your sony was probably a memory stick, or pro duo or something, the canon, like the last person said, is probably an sd. If you really want to know why didn't you try to shove the old one in the new camera. If it fit and saved a taken picture to it then you know it would work. Genius.
