Wonderful

I spent a while researching cameras before purchasing the NV40, I found that it had all of the features that I wanted. I especiallty like the self portrait mode it works great. Camera is very compact and the pictures are very clear. There are so many features on this camera my only complaint is that there is no in-depth printed user's manuel, you have to the supplied disc on a computer.

Comparing to NV10

I bought the upgrade to my old camera (the NV10) because I was excited about all the new features. I believe the file quality is better, the noise is less apparent, the ISO has a better range, and the flash is no longer a pop-up, which is great, because I used to always put my finger over it! There are a few changes that I don't care for. One being they changed the location of the charger/usb port to the side--it is harder to insert the cable and likely that I'll break off the rubber part they include to cover the port. With the old version, I never noticed the flash going off twice before taking the picture (which I assume is for focus or red eye), but now the delay is a hassle and when taking pictures of people, they assume the shot is taken and move before the shutter actually captures the image. I do like the new modes, they make it a little bit easier for beginners to use the program modes. I don't like that the black and white option is on the dial--it took me a few minutes while at an event to figure out why it was in black and white, when I had never set it to do that, and it's because the dial had accidently been turned while in my bag. So I would suggest getting to know the camera pretty well before taking it to something important (always a good plan anyway) because not all of the settings are ultra obvious to turn off or on. Overall, I think it's a very nice camera for a very reasonable price, there are just a few things that I'm not sure why they changed them from the original.

Part of the Prestige line featuring sleek designs and user-friendly advanced features, the L60 features a 3x optical zoom SHD lens, a 5x digital zoom and a large, 2.4-inch color LCD display.The Digimax L60 offers MPEG-4, the high-compression, high-quality video format that can record for up to 3-4 times longer than traditional video formats commonly used in other digital cameras. The L60 can record in VGA (640x480) at 30fps, for smoother video and a bigger view of the movie on LCD and TV screens. For steady recording, the built-in movie stabilization will automatically detect and correct lateral and vertical camera movement caused by the shooter's unsteady hand.Users can also take advantage of the camera's unique movie shooting functions, including a movie stabilizer, continuous video recording, improved in-camera video editing and the ability to use the 3x optical zoom while recording. Movie stabilizer helps reduce camera shake by automatic detection and correction of lateral and vertical camera vibrations, while continuous video recording allows the shooter to pause and resume video recording at any time and merge multiple video files into one single file. Users can also save a selected part of a movie clip into a new file during playback and capture a still image during video playback.The L60 features several special effects functions for creative control in-camera, such as Color Effect, Highlight, Photo Frame, Negative and Composite Shot. Color effects include B/W, sepia, blue, green and red. For shooting fast-moving subjects, the L60 includes Continuous Shooting mode and Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB), a feature that will shoot a series of images with slightly varying exposures.

Good value

Camera has good features, is compact, battery lasts a long time, big LCD screen to pre-view your shot and it's priced right!

Sllllloooooowww shutter

Once you take the picture the is camera incredibly slow and delayed in actually taking the picture. Unless you have a very patient target many times you will lose the moment or end up with a moving target due to this long delay. So slow I would never recommend this camera. Many times I end up taking moveis vs. pictures too, in error. I am absolutely NOT a professional, but do have common sense and it tells me this camera is no good for an average user. I purchased based on the positive reviews, but have to 100% disagree.

Replaces a camcorder

One of the things that other reviewers left out is how great a camcorder this is. Ok, I know it is a camera, but in video mode it will shoot a high quality video for about one and one half hours with a 2 Gb card. It uses Sd cards, very cheap (I paid $19 for mine on sale at Best Buy). It has an image stabilizer built in but you still have to hold it steady, a tripod is best. When I show friends video they cannot believe it is from a camera. Mpeg4 640X480 at 30 frames per second. The really cool thing is you can zoom while video recording. Most cameras do not allow this. It is only 3 times optical but I have had good results filming little league baseball.
As a camera, it is fair. Good prints but long shutter lag. You can put it on program rather than auto and then force the flash to always go off. You get better pictures inside and out. The backlight function works very well as another reviewer mentioned.
It is small so I carry it everywhere and makes a great second camera.

greatly disappointed

I purchased this camera as a gift for my son a year ago. He has had little occasion to use it. He estimates it's been used 4 times. Now as he attempts to use it over the holidays, the shutter won't open and the lens won't come forward as the camera is turned on. It is two weeks out of the manufacturer warranty. Of course, neither Amazon or Samsung wish to accept responsibility now that it's out of warranty. They wish me to pay more to have a camera repaired that's had very limited use. I certainly don't wish to purchase any more Samsung products and must admit I'm very disappointed with Amazon's response, considering how many items I've purchased through them.

A semiprecious and flawed jewel

Allow me to start by saying that I purchased NV7 despite being aware of its limitations/flaws. When the price got right, I decided to add it to my toolbox. Indeed, its emotion-inspiring design has a very strong pull that's only slightly diminished since I bought it.

Pros:
If you think there is room/need for camera-driven inspiration in photography, then this is it unless you are prepared to spend 5x as much;
Decent optics;
Outstanding interface system--clever and all on the screen;
Class act look and feel;
Recharges through USB, the coolest/smartest regular power charger (small and functional);
Smart and effective flash;
Text preset--useful for capturing text in magazines and books--it's a kind of smart macro zoom.

Cons (or areas for improvement of a future hit):
Sensor that doesn't do justice to the generously cut lens hence noisy images even in daylight--for some this might be the biggest flaw;
No manual control of the zoom function;
Noisy motor (for zoom and image stabilization);
When in shooting mode, the lens comes out of the barrel you see in most pictures--I assumed this would not be the case since the barrel is so protruding anyway;
The lens cap comes out too easily.

Nothing special about image stabilization, video mode, and the software package. The Text preset, while useful, could have been really useful had this camera software come with an OCR (optical character recognition) capability...

All in all, if its design inspires you too, get it for anything under two_hundred. And, in case the Samsung folks read this too, fix the above issues and you could price a future version of NV7 all the way up to five_hundred.

Better than Sony Cybershot

This camera is great! It has very sharp image quality. Only problem is that the lens are too big. It's better than my last camera Sony W100. My old camera produces very poor image quality. Schnieder lens rule and Carl Ziess lens is rubbish!

Great!!

I love this camera it takes wonderful pictures, and the different settings make it an amazing camera! The only bad thing about this camera is the flash doesn't always come up right away in bad lighting. Overall this camera is really good and if you are on a budget it is not to expensive. The 7x zoom and 7.2 mp help also to make the camera wonderful!!!

AMAZING: Handful of digital magic

I shoot professionally; have for over 35 years. Digital has been my platform of choice since 1998, but it really didn't come into it's own, until during the 2003-2004 season.

I've shot a lot of different digital cameras; both P-N-S and DSLR; and several digital back units on medium and large format devices. So, when I say this little camera amazed me, that's no small statement.

I was quite honestly... blown away!

I'll state upfront these things I do NOT like about the camera:

1) BATTERY LIFE is ABYSMAL ... when a digital camera offers the ability to record over 500, 7.2MP images or 1h30min+ of MPEG4 video + audio, the consumer should expect a battery to match this capacity; and this is with only 1GB SD card. How much more frustrating would this be with a 2GB or 4GB card? A lot!

2) AUDIO DISRUPT on ZOOM in VIDEO MODE ... this is disturbing and aggravating. It should not be a problem, but it is.

3) NO RAW FORMAT ... why the people at Samsung did not provide this camera with RAW shooting capability is a mystery to me. If it did, I would be shooting this camera at least 40% of the time over my DSLR's. I shoot 100% of my images - on the DSLR's - in RAW. I would shoot more w/ the Samsung if it were capable of shooting in RAW.

That's it. Yes. That's it.

The Samsung NV7 is not going to win the 'eyecatcher' camera award. It's not 'cute'. And the lens does not retract into the body providing the slick, credit card in the pocket fit most of today's budding digital consumers have been led to believe is good. It may look nice, but not if you're looking for quality photography.

The glass lens - yes, real glass - used is a very high quality lens. This is a full 90% of the quality of any image: digital or analog. So, if I can have glass over plastic - I take glass. It's heavier and bulkier, true. But the images are also worth the effort in capturing them.

I initially recommended this camera to my son. He purchased one and gave it a glowing report. Within a week we were vacationing together and I had opportunity to 'test drive it'; and I did. I was even more impressed. I ordered one for myself that evening. Within 3 days I was in full experimentation mode. I recorded over 1000 images, in nearly every conceivable condition: bright beach light to pitch black. Outside, inside, action, still. Static and dynamic backgrounds and subjects. In the full range of focus options, ISO and camera settings.

I was most impressed with it's ability to capture crisp images in low-light, hand-held conditions. Even when the subjects (little kids and animals!) were less than static! With a full range of WB, Fstop, Shutter, Focus and ISO ... many of these even in the auto-modes! ... capturing quality images was not difficult at all! And being able to read, clearly!, the large 2.5" (6.35cm) LCD screen was real joy; especially if you're like me and need a 'skosh more size' in reading the data!

Because it does not allow interchangeable lens use, I will not be going to this camera all the time. But I have found a very useful niche for it. With this one camera + a digital audio recorder, I can record an hour long interview, post produce and have it online in less than 20 minutes. All from a tool chest that cost less than $500! And I can still get publication grade JPEG stills, too.

I've read the other comments mentioning the image noise and the motor noise. Well, I've seen as much image noise in cameras costing 10X this one and as for motor noise.. those cameras (from 4 different manufacturers, BTW) make this camera's 'motor noise' sound like a gnat squeak! So, it's not really an issue. In all the variations in which I captured images in those 1000 shots, there would have been plenty of opportunity to see and hear - key word here - UNACCEPTABLE ... noise.

When you shoot at 400 ISO there is noise; that is to be expected. When you shoot with a camera that weighs in at less than 6 oz., it won't have the 'stability' of a larger camera. But most of them don't have image stabilization either. I did not find any unexpected or more than usual - or again - key word here - UNACCEPTABLE ... problems.

I would recommend this camera for anyone serious about taking excellent photos. I will also say, it's a very good teaching tool for anyone wanting to learn to take professional photos. If this camera recorded in RAW file format, I'd recommend it as a professional camera. However, in the hands of an experienced photographer, this camera will do a very fine job of fulfilling professional needs within its boundaries.

I do not list the CCD sensor as a problem, for the CCD is superior in quality capture to the CMOS sensor; when capturing static to limited dynamics subjects: still life, scenics, limited motion. But the CCD will not capture action shots as well as the CMOS sensor.

A common problem that plagues many in the 'family fun shots' category; missed batting swings, balls hit or caught, kicks made or passes caught, hoops made or great plays, facial expressions ... you name the action wanted in photographs ... that is simply missed by most photographers using the Point-N-Shoot CCD sensor cameras. The Samsung NV7 is a CCD, Point-N-Shoot camera. It has this weakness. But, knowing this and with a bit of practice, many of those lost images can be captured; and captured very well.

So, for $160 this is more camera than anyone on earth could have had 3 years ago ... at any price! This only serves to excite me about what we will have in the next 5 years. And I already know a lot of what is coming!

Enjoy. This camera is not only good, It's fun, too! At this price ... it's a LOT OF FUN!!

OK as backup camera

I keep this camera in my service truck for those broken parts that has little or no description in the service manual or parts books. The NiMh batteries I use is rated for 2600MH and seems to keep the charge for three months.

The truck is cold on cold days but the camera starts right up. When the batteries dies or not work from cold, I use the NiMh batteries from my AA led flash light.

I rate this a 4 star; I need a viewfinder when it bright sunlight and It's hard to focus.

Good pictures but low battery life

This a is an overall good camera. Great pics, lots of different options, but the reason i give it 2 stars is because Of battery life.

The batteries on my camera last barely 5 minutes, usually around 3 1/2-
4 mins.. Ive gone through 2 22 packs of double a batteries in the 3 weeks ive had it.

Ive decided just to leave it rather than sped wayy more money on double A's.

Pros:
Great pictures
Lots of cool options
light
inexpensive
Compatible with many different types of cards
Takes Relatively good movies.

Cons
Low battery life
Lot of shutter lag
there appears to be no battery savers option
NO VIEWFINDER Just BATTERY EATING lcd screen.

Good camera for kids

I bought two of these cameras for my kids. They are easy to use and have a variety of use options (timer, video, still shots). My one critique is they burn through batteries fairly fast, so use rechargeable AA's instead of disposable!

Questions & Answers
Question : Did anyone else buy the Samsung D53 digital camera at Walmart? How does Samsung compare with Polaroid?
This must have been a Walmart exclusive because it's not listed on the Samsung web site as a model. Does anyone know how this camera would compare with the Polaroid A700 which was on sale at Kmart? Any opinions on who might make the best inexpense digital camera--Samsung or Polaroid? I do know that the Samsung is very confusing to use out of the box. There are many features but a steep learning curve on figuring out how to use them.

Answer:
Neither. I don't know how much retailers are advertising these for, but if Canon, Olympus, Fuji or Kodak had one within $100, I would opt for one of those and consider it money well spent. I use a Samsung digicam at work for taking passport photos and it is completely unimpressive. Polaroid spent a lot of time in bankruptcy, and is behind on the digital curve. Good luck in finding the right camera. BTW, if you are switching from a film camera, ALL digicams have a steep learning curve!

Question : How do I fix my samsung digital camera?
The camera is a type where the lens come up when you turn it on. The lens came out but the battery died and the lens stayed put. Sometime later I put new batteries in to close the lens but the lens wouldn't come back in. I looked and found out the outer tube is sorta crooked. Is there anything i can do to fix it without bringing it to a samsung center?

Answer:
have it repaired

Question : I'm thinking of buying a samsung digital camera.I like the S850 model .What r your views??

Answer:
to me, it looks fine. Do you mean the Samsung 85. On www.dpreview.com it is listed as S85 I'd check on amazon, buy.com, and newegg.com and read the reviews. People's experiences with the camera are invaluable in my opinion.

Question : Wth is the macro function on the s760 samsung digital camera?
I know what it does but it doesn't seem to do anything here, am I missing something or is that just a scam function?

Answer:
It is supposed to allow the camera to focus at closer distances. Focus as close as you can then switch to macro mode and try to focus closer. If you succeed then it is working fine.

Question : I bought an open box L77 Samsung Digital Camera and I need accessories for it. Where can I get them?
I have searched all over the internet but still can't find any store who carries accessories for L77 Samsung digital camera. Fortunately, I was able to download a complete copy of user's manual.

Answer:
I don't know what accessories you want? The only things that come with it are the battery and charger. This is a description of the camera--- http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Samsung/samsung_l77.asp

Question : How do you set the timer on a Samsung D75 digital camera?!?
Hi! I have a samsung D75 digital camera and I always need to use the timer option, but I dont know how to set it up so it works! Please, if you know, tell me how because its driving me mad! Thank you! Have a good day.

Answer:
The round dial on the back of your camera has the self-timer function. It's the icon that looks like a circle or clock. It has a line through it (or the second hand in a clock). While in recording/shooting mode you should be able to press it and it will give you a 2 sec. or 10 sec. timer option. Then just press the shutter button to get the timer started. Alternatively, have a look in pages 8 and, in particular, page 27 of your user manual for help in using the self timer. If you don't have the user manual, you can download it in the link below...

Question : how to take picture of a moon whith my samsung digital camera?
someone help me??? i want to take picture of a moon camera i have : samsung S750 zoom-5.8-17.4mm 3X optical zoom have ASR (advance shake reduction) 7.2 megapixel i have paint shop pro X2 picasa tripod

Answer:
The moon will be quite small with your lenses focal length which is not much longer that a medium telephoto used to take portraits. Even using my 500 mm on my D300, the moon only fills about 1/5th of the frame. I don't know how you plan on setting the camera to the sunny 16 rule setting for exposing the moon properly. At ISO 100, you could hand hold the camera at 1/400th second @ f/8 with the camera set at infinity and get nearly perfect exposures. If you attempt to use the auto-exposure, auto-focus features of your camera, you are likely only to get a white hole in the sky and a lot of camera movement, because the auto-exposure will be trying to expose for the night sky, not the moon

Question : How do you capture color light with a Samsung S730 digital camera?
I have a samsung s730 7.2 digital camera and I was wondering how to capture a great light scene at night? I know how to use the different modes for different scenes but at night even with right mode the picture comes out blury or too bright with the flash. If i am taking pictures of different color lights such as a blue lighting or red or something how do I capture the color in the picture without it coming out too blury?

Answer:
u need a long exposure, and because of long exposure time you may not move the camera, and do not use flash. You will then get the light from the streets lights or whatever else is around... expect to get diff colors, reds and oranges .... get a tripod, will not be able to hand hold at such long exposure settings d. www.deaftoneimaging.com

Question : how long do samsung digital camera batteries last?
i just bought a samsung digital camera today at circuit city, and just after a while its battery power became very low. i tried to change batteries, but the other ones don't work. i keep trying to figure out how the battery became so low when i just bought it today! and sometimes when i was taking pictures to test it out, it would just shut off or turn on itself. does anyone know why?

Answer:
When you buy a new camera, mobile phone or something like that, you have to charge it for 4-5 hours. Then you must use it. There are different batteries. "AAA" or "AA" and so on. The little one is "AAA". pay attention to it. And try to use rechargebale batteries. Yeah, they are more expensive than others, but it will last nearly 2-3 year. (you have to give it energy day-by-day) And dont forget, if there appears any problem, You may contact to "shop sale or technic manager".

Question : Change image size on samsung bl103 digital camera?
I just got a samsung camera and when taking pictures they come out HUGE...How do I change the setting so the pictures take a little smaller?

Answer:
NO, no, no, no, no - don't EVER do that!!! You should never EVER set your camera to anything less than best quality (i.e. lowest compression rate) and biggest size (highest resolution). The reasons for that include: 1) If you have a good, large photo, you can crop it more later on without losing too much detail if you really have to. 2) If you happen to take the best photo you ever took, you'll be able to print it at a large size. If you lowered size and quality, you'd be kicking yourself. 3) If you decide later you really don't want to keep a big file, it is very easy to down-size it in post processing - but you can't go the other way, you can't invent pixels that weren't there in the first place. 4) Memory cards are cheap, so are bigger hard drives. There is NO reason to do anything less than the best.
