substandard entry

This is the worst digital camera i've ever owned.

Flaws:
1. autofocus is slow and in about 50% of cases will focus on the wrong central object. This is evident because small bracket signs bracket the object that the camera is focusing on. So it is readily apparent whether your subject agrees with the camera's. About half the time it won't. Don't try to just snap a picture without seeing where the brackets are located or you will be severely disappointed.

2. The shutter lag is unforgivably slow. You have to half depress the button to see what it is focusing on, this takes about 0.5 sec, and then depress fully to take your picture, another 0.4 sec. By this time your subject is long gone...

3. The autoflash is horrible. This is in part a consequence of numbers 1 and 2 above. Because the autofocus is often mistargeted and slow, the flash will be tailored for the wrong subject.

4. Indoor photography is blurred or overexposed. Again, because the autofocus is so slow, if you try to take a simple flash photo, it will either shut off the flash entirely or overexpose your photo. Forget low light pictures.

5. The touch screen is absolutely pointless. Program mode is also pointless since low light photos are so grainy as to be unviewable.

6. The cycling time between 2 photos is extremely slow. If you are trying to capture several photos of a meaningful scene, forget it. Just take 1 and hope it is in focus.

7. The battery is proprietary, rather short lived, and slow to charge in the provided charger. So your option is to shell out $40 for another battery.

Pros:
In outdoor full light conditions the pictures are satisfactory. But not at dusk or night time, and forget trying to take cool night time outdoor pictures.

Again, this is the worst digital camera i've ever owned. There are identically priced cameras from Canon and Kodak which are vastly superior. And i'm going back to them. Or maybe i'll try a Casio. I had a 3mp Kodak ez-share which i hated but was much much better than this product. if anyone from pentax wants to make up for this travesty they can contact me at [...]

Please avoid this device.

Camera Optio T30

I just went on a trip and took many pictures, I usually shake a lot when I take pictures and with this camera, I took all my pictures and my shaking did not do anything. It is so easy to use and the big 3" screen in the back makes vewing the pictures a lot mor fun. The videos are of very good quality. I am very glad that I bought this camera.

Perfectly suited for those new to digital photography and photo enthusiasts alike, the Optio line offers a wide variety of easy-to-use and advanced digital cameras. With their user-friendly features and innovative, image-enhancing functions, Optio digital cameras will elevate the enjoyment and art of photography to a new level.

Customer Review :

Good camera for beginners but.....

Pentax Optio 50L proves to be a very sturdy, reliable and what appears to be well constructed camera. The main selling point of this camera is the ease of use. And this is a very easy camera to use, anyone can probably master this camera within minutes after reading the Pentax's paltry instruction booklet. They even have a dial marker that would almost make this camera into one of them ancient Kodak Instamatic!! (Anyone remembered those??)

Since Amazon have provided the specifications, I would go on to the camera's performances.

Sad to say, this is a pretty average camera. Everything about it is, average in terms of image quality, autofocus speed, and other stuffs that layman photographers usually looks for. The 2.5 inch LCD is nice but pretty average in performance, big enough to look but fades in the sunlight. At 200 ISO, there were some noises which I thought shouldn't be there. The features are pretty average, nothing truly exceptional about this camera outside of the ease of use.

There are some downsides to this camera as well. The ISO rating goes only up to 200 ISO. That kind of limit the camera a bit for indoor shots. To make the matter worst, the built-in flash for this camera is pretty pathetic. The flash proves to be weak and rather short ranged. Almost useless unless you are firing away at point blank range. I was also disappointed that this camera could not accept CRV3 battery like the Optio 30 can.

This would be a hard camera to recommend to any body out there reading this. I think there's a better camera around this price range somewhere out there. I recommended you keep looking.

What Flash Card is Right for This 4MP Camera?

It is a question that all digital camera enthusiasts ask themselves shortly after purchasing a digital camera, but it is one that is not easily answered as there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. This review will help to guide you to the best solution based off the characteristics and specifications of the Pentax Optio 450 4MP Digital Camera. I feel I am qualified to provide this information as I was in the memory industry for 7 years but having left the industry a year ago, I can be completely unbiased on this subject.

One of the biggest factors to consider is the megapixel rating of this Pentax camera. Considering this particular camera is generally considered to be a 4MP digital camera. You can expect to store approximately 32 images on a 64MB card, 64 pictures on a 128MB flash card, 128 digital pictures on digital film of 256MB capacity, 256 pics on a 512MB picture card, 512 images on a 1GB media card, 1,024 photos on a 2GB flash card, and a monstrous 2,048 digital photos on a 4GB card. These image/picture calculations assume that you are going to utilize the full potential of your camera but won't shoot in RAW mode. In other words, the estimates are for shooting at the highest JPEG setting available for the Pentax Optio 450 4MP Digital Camera. Understand that they are indeed estimates and can vary based off the actual scene or subject being shot and the amount of light, color variation, detail, etc. in the photo. You can assume these numbers are accurate within 10%.

However how many images a card can hold is not the only factor you should consider before buying this all important accessory. You should also consider that you may want to use your Pentax Optio 450 4MP Digital Camera to take shots of sporting events, wildlife, or even your child's unique expressions. These moments have a very small window of opportunity to get the shot you desire thus a flash card that has been rated by experts as being a faster card may be something to consider. In my opinion, it is always best to find a review of a flash card as it performed in your specific digital camera. Some cameras just work better with specific flash cards do to the software, firmware, buffer utilization, etc. between the camera and the flash card. Finding an answer to this question is not usually an easy task. There is, though, a superb website that not only offers flash card reviews but also has an extensive user forum that can answer this all important question for you. You may want to take a look at dpreview dot com and then do a search for the Pentax Optio 450 4MP Digital Camera in the forums area, if that doesn't work just do a search on Pentax and you should be able to find someone that can help you. I am fairly certain you will have plenty of information to make an informed buying decision. You may also want to look at their detailed review of this particular camera as well if you have not yet decide on whether to purchase it.

Of course one of the next factors to consider is in regards to price. Please, do not make the mistake that I have made of buying the absolute cheapest flash card. Take a look at the factors I have mentioned here before you make a purchase. Think of a flash card for your Pentax camera as an extension to it. Just as you wouldn't purchase the cheapest camera case for your camera (personally I own the Targus DPMV02 Pro Series Video/Photo Backpack but I like the extra room and the backpack style, which may not be your cup of tea) don't necessarily purchase the cheapest flash card either. Keep in mind that you will use this card every single time you use your camera. Like I said it is truly an extension of your digital camera.

The final thing I will mention is in regards to service. There are a number of flash card suppliers in the world today. However all of the flash cards are actually built by a handful (3 - 5) of companies and even those companies only have a few options (2 - 4) regarding which components they are going to use in their particular design. More or less, the actually hardware inside each flash card is going to be similar but the way in which they utilize that hardware and the level of support they will provide, given there is a problem, are more paramount. Just imagine going 10 days without a flash card for your camera (which I did) because you are waiting for some company to repair your flash card, or worse yet having it fail and having no recourse. There are a couple of manufacturers that do very well in regards to utilizing technology and providing customer service. As of the time of this writing they are SanDisk, Lexar, and Viking. However check the newsgroups and forums for the latest information as it can be very cyclical and unfortunately can take a turn for the worse overnight.

No matter what flash card you decide to use with your digital camera make sure you take the time to take the pictures. Time flies by fast and having thousands of images to thumb through 5 years from now to remind you of the time that has gone by will be the most powerful investment of all. I have personally purchased a SimpleTech external hard drive to store my images on (another reason I like the Targus DPMV02 Pro Series Video/Photo Backpack as it gives me room to put in my hard drive). The hard drive combined with the backpack allows me to take my photos with me when I go visit family and friends. I use PhotoShop exclusively to do all my photo editing and batch processing (a great feature of PhotoShop) and of course make occasional backups to DVD-RW.

Enjoy your Pentax Optio 450 4MP Digital Camera. I hope this review has informed you how this camera can be best enhanced by a flash card and the best approach in finding one that meets your specific needs.

Beginner camera

I brought this camera because I was looking for super lightweight camera for my hiking and biking needs. I wasn't disappointed in that aspect. This camera is small and light and super easy to used. In fact, if you were looking for one digital camera to introduced one of your older relatives who can't tell the difference between a RAM and ROM, this camera is it.

The camera's 3.2 megapixal is more then enough for most people who don't need poster size photo print out. For 4x6 size, this is a perfect camera. Its uses a SD card, the quality of the photos proves to be quite good and as I discovered, it appears to be a quality camera. The battery life proves to be pretty good and its a camera you can easy jump in and used its options without looking too closely to the instruction book. It only major weakness seem to be that its delay time between the pushing of the shutter and when the picture is taken seem to be little long. It slightly slow. You just have to adjust and adapt to time it right. I also wished this camera came with a remote like many of the Pentax film cameras got.

This camera will served most people quite well as back up camera or if you are just beginning, a perfect introduction to digital photography. I used for hiking and biking. Although its not waterproof or anything, it serves just well as long as you don't take it swimming!

Good for a first timer.

This camera was a good choice for me mostly because of it's price, but it has great picture quality, even on the middle resolution setting, and a good zoom. I would suggest a bigger memory card, rechargeable Ni batteries, and a tripod for night pictures. It is very easy to download the pictures to your computer or to take the card to a place that prints digital pictures. In hind sight I would've spent a little extra to get a better looking, sleeker camera. Check these cameras out at an electronics store then purchase online to get the best prices.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating........

After trying and returning several small digital cameras-Olympus Camedia 395 (poor contrast and SLOOOW), two Fuji Finepix A120s (ghostly blooming), and a Nikon Coolpix 2200 (purple fringeing and lack of clarity)-I've at last found one that takes satisfying pictures!

PROs:
- Image quality is excellent. There are none of the defects of the other cameras I tried. Colours are natural, focus is sharp, and there is no distortion. For one day I had both the Nikon and the Pentax and took lots of identical photos-the Pentax produced a much better result every time.
- Lots of control for those who want it (AE metering, manual focus in addition to auto and fixed, selectable ISO, white balance, saturation, contrast, etc. etc.).
- Functions are easy to select and use. Important ones are on buttons, not menus (e.g. monitor on/off, exposure compensation-both of these buried in menus on the Nikon).
- Red eye is rare, even without the special flash setting.
- The supplied software, ACDSee and FotoCanvas, is just right-easy to use and powerful. What an eye-opener after Nikon's incompetent PictureProject, which is obsessed with an obscure method of arranging photos in collections and has hardly energy left over for worthwhile features.

Speed is average (startup a bit slow, shutter lag reasonable) and so is battery usage if you use rechargeable NiMH. Alkalines are sucked dry in minutes.

CONs
- Manual rather pedestrian, with little explanation of technical features, no tips on how to use them, and no index.
- No video out, which is cheap. I'd rather have this than the gimmicky live histogram-impressive (like those flashing LEDs on 80s stereos). but what use is it?
- Battery/card cover feels as if it's going to fly open if you hold the camera in the wrong way.
- What you see is not necessarily what you get. Unaccountably, the picture on the LCD screen is a bit darker when it's downloaded-easily cleared up by the software, but that shouldn't be necessary. The Nikon was the same, without any way of dealing with it. I didn't notice this mismatch on the Fuji Finepix.

The strengths of this camera FAR outweigh its few weaknesses. The only thing that really matters is that it takes great pictures, and it's easy and fun to use.

great first cam for novices or back up cam for travelers

I am an experienced digital camera user, this being my 4th camera following a 1.3mp Olympus (used the thankfully obsolete Smart Media format) 3.2mp Minolta Z-1 and 8mp Minolta A2. I chose the Pentax as a back up to the A2, as the Z-1 was too bulky to serve as a secondary camera while traveling. It also used SD cards and AA rechargeables, which I have a bunch of.

Picture resolution is outstanding, and I have found no major problems with either the autofocus or exposure systems. Picture quality is actually quite close to the Z-1. Using a 1gb SD card, you have about 500 shots available at the highest resolution settings, more than enough to keep anyone busy. This set-up, with a spare set of AA rechargeables (get the 2500 ones) was quite comfortable in a small case on my belt, serving as the back up to my A2.

This camera is also a good choice for back packers, as it is very light and batteries last quite long, limiting the need to carry too many spares. If you get rechargeable lithium CR-V3s, they are actually lighter and last even longer. Alas, this quality caused the loss of this dear little camera, as my girlfriend cast her eye on it and it ended up in her backpack. To make her feel better about it (like I really needed to) I took her Sony DSC-P1 in exchange as my new spare...a real brick compared to the Pentax, and uses proprietary batteries which I hate. Yes yes yes, I know the Minolta A2 uses a proprietary battery, but it is sooooo good that I bit the bullet.

Another viable alternative to this unit is the new Canon A510, which I may get. Uses AAs and SD cards too, and also takes great pics. The Sony will likely end up on Ebay. I hate Memory Sticks too. Slow and expensive.

Bottom line, the Pentax is quite good, and the optics in my opinion are comparable to similar models from Canon and Nikon, and better than Olympus.

Good Camera

Easy to use. 3X optical zoom. Only needs about 3 seconds before you can take another picture. Lots of options. The only thing I didn't like is that there is no sound with the movie mode. Good starter camera for the price, or spare for an intermediate.

Questions & Answers
Question : Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras?
Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras compared to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Casio etc?

Answer:
Pentax is a camera/imaging company first, just like Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Leica. Sony, Panasonic and Casio are consumer electronic companies and make cameras along with other items. Pentax quality is right there with the best of them and far better than companies like Casio. Sony and Panasonic do make good cameras, especially now that Sony has taken over the Konika Minolta camera business. Pentax is definitely a good, solid choice.

Question : How do I change the date on my pentax optio digital camera??
The digital read of the date on my camera is wrong. i would like to be able to lood at my pics and have the right date taken displayed. does anyone know how i change it on the camera??

Answer:
Read the booklet that came with the camera, that's why companies include them in the box! You didn't indicate which model you own so it's difficult to give you exact instructions. But since most Pentax cameras have similar layouts and buttons, the general way to change the date and time is to go into your settings via the "Menu" button. You should be able to see a "Date Adjust" item in there. If not, use the 4-way controller to navigate through the menu. From here, it should be pretty simple; use the 4-way to adjust the date and time settings.

Question : Is there a way on a Pentax digital camera to pause during a video?
It's a Pentax optio E40 How?

Answer:
I have a Pentax optio t 10 , and i dont believe my camera can pause.

Question : Pentax digital camera, cannot play movie clips?
I have a Pentax OPTIO M 20 when I go to look at the stuff I have taken it says camera cannot play this image and sound, why it is only 3 months old? It should and used to play video clips with sound

Answer:
Are you viewing it on your computer? If so, the camera your using may have a bizarre file format your computer does not recognize. If you don't understand that then I'll change it to simple terms. When you save a file you can tell that there should be a small amount of letters after the file. Such as .gif .jpeg . avi and so on. Well when you record something, your camera could save the file in a format such as .avi that your computer doesn't have the necessary hardware, software, or upgrade to have the ability to read it. Local computer places can help you with this. Or even a help site on the web. I hope this helps. If your viewing it on your camera, fist check the manual and menu on the camera. If nothing mentions or resembles your problem, try going to a nearby circuit city or best buy and talk to them about the problem. I recommend circuit city since in my town they tend to be more useful. I hope you don't give up on taking picture and films. who knows... you could be the next YouTube star XD

Question : Problem with my Pentax digital camera. New batteries keep saying batteries depleted?
My screen on my Pentax digital camera keeps saying batteries depleted even though I have new batteries in the camera. Help

Answer:
I dont know which model you have from Pentax but my model Optio 30 also has the same trouble. My experience is if you have a pair of new alkalines it will work otherwise not at all. Rechargable batteries should do better but I never tried them. I tried CRV3 once, it is good but of a little bit more initial cost. It will do better if you follow some strategies to avoid battery consumption such as turning off the LCD screen, less use of zooming and flash, etc. Otherwise, Pentax is better in performance than many cameras and my model is very good for shooting practise.

Question : What is a better digital camera, a Pentax optio m50 or a Sony DSC-W120?
I really want a new small Digital camera for christmas and i have found 2 i really like and cant decide. Price doesnt really matter so whatever is best. I will be using this camera for taking pictures on trips with my friends. I will not be using it for professional use. Please Help!

Answer:
Sony W120 is highly recommended by dpreview.com.

Question : pentax digital camera problems?
my digital camera is a pentax optio m30 it will turn on and adjust the thens and the just turn off. any ideas?

Answer:
First make sure your Li-ion battery is fully charged ... charge it until your charger tells you it is fully charged. This could take up to three or four hours. Always charge your cameras battery the night before you intend to use it. If after putting a fully charged battery in your camera, you still have the problem, contact Pentax help line and have them help you
