Great little camera.

It's small and very light so you can take it anywhere. Icons that are fun and easy to use. Takes great pictures. I love the soft flash mode, the warm skin tone mode and the rechargeable battery. The only thing is that I got it in pink, great color, but my little granddaughter thinks it's her toy!

Great little camera!

I have really enjoyed using this camera in the last few weeks. It takes great pictures, but what I like, perhaps most, about it is the speed of picture taking. It takes it's first picture nice and fast so you can actually get a picture of what you wanted! And it also takes consecutive pictures fast as well. I would highly recommend this camera for someone who wants to take good, easy pictures while having a bunch of great features too!

Decent Camera

Nice camera for the price. I like the auto smile feature. Lightweight and easy to use. Able to recover photos after they have been deleted. Would recommend this camera. I bought 2 of them. A pink one for my daughter and a blue one for my son. They both enjoy using these cameras.

A Nice Little Camera for Family and Vacation Photos

I bought the Pentax Optio M50 as a gift. I chose this model for the following reasons:

* It is small and compact enough to always have with you
* It is very stylish (especially for a young girl). We got it in Pink to go with her pink iPod.
* I wanted a camera with a minimum of 8MP which is plenty for home use (I have advanced digital SLRs with 8MP and they take pro-quality images)
* The zoom ratio (5x) was much better than those found on other cameras in it's class (usually 3x)
* I like the feature that automatically detects and exposes for faces (although the "Auto-Smile" feature seems to be a hit-or-miss feature so I don't suggest using it)
* It is a good value for the price

A couple of things to be aware of though:

* There is no optical viewer, you must use the rear screen to compose the image
* The "shake reduction" feature is not true electronic image stabilization, which you can find or higher-end cameras. Instead it raises the sensitivity of the light sensing chip in low light which allows the use of a higher shutter speed at the same time giving you less detail in the resulting photo. Nice feature, but not as nice as IS which reduces or compensates for actual camera shake electronically.

Over all this is a great buy. Just a few years ago a camera like this would have cost at least twice as much. Considering it's features this is a very good value and Pentax is a name that you can trust.

Update 11/22: This camera is now selling here for about $40 less than I paid both for the ones that I bought (the first one went over so well that I bought another for my mother) making this an even better value!

Rugged camera, good quality for the price

I primarily bought this camera for outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and 4-wheeling. For outdoor, daytime photos, this camera works as expected, producing quality photos. Low light or indoor photos are another matter. They are grainy, awful photos. The different shooting modes are just silly. There's even a pet and kid mode. The battery life is decent.

Nice little camera for skiing or kayaking. Takes great pictures and video. One draw back to waterproof cameras are they don't have a view finder. Glare can be an issue without one.

Very Pleased

We bought this to take to Jamaica for our honeymoon and loved the ability to take it in and near the water to get shots that I would never take my DSLR. I knew going in that it has limitations and its image quality does not compare with a DSLR, but it did surpass our expectations as long as you had quality light and used its features accordingly. Example: For low-light shots, set the camera on a stable surface and use the 2-sec timer to take the shot instead of handholding it. We look forward to using it next summer in our pool!

I just love it

It is easy to use. The videos are much better quality then earlier models.

nice

picked it for fly fishing/rafting pics. drowned 2 cameras this past summer so seemed like a good idea. being able to take pics of fish underwater is too fun, as well. no problems with any leakage when dunked all afternoon taking underwater pics in a stream. I enlarged several of the better pics to 11x14 for kicks and to see the quality and was impressed. fun camera. the macro is outstanding too.

a little less accurate/slower on the auto-focus when up close underwater. with bubbles and debris sometimes present, i realize it's demanding situation for a p/s camera though. not a complaint just something to be aware of when using it. selecting the tighter focusing zone option seemed to help allot, as well for this specific situation.

a spare battery or two is a good idea. about 200+ pics w/ fair amount of flash use and being dunked in a cold river allot of the time.

again, fun camera.

Love These Cameras

I have now owned 4 cameras in this series and loved them. The first, the original Optio WP was resold, I broke the second one at an amusement park and bought two of these for my wife and for me.

They are waterproof! I've taken them into pools and the ocean and they take excellent shots. After loosing two digital cameras to quick dips in the lake these put all my fears to rest. I can use them in and near water without fear. Some of the underwater shots I used as cards and my 5 year old son has taken some excellent underwater photos of us.

This model has 10 megapixels, stability control, face recognition and a bunch of new features matching other digitals that aren't waterproof. It is a huge feature leap over the W30 but is also larger.

I love these and can recommend it without reservation.

well pleased

have used the Pentax W60 for several weeks now, and have been pleased with results... while not the picture quality of an SLR, it produces pictures that I am more than pleased with, as well as those on the receiving end... my requirements was something that i could hang around my neck, under a life jacket, pull out while paddling Class IV and V whitewater, point and shoot... it needed to be light, have good optical zoom, be WATERPROOF, and not require a bunch of fiddling around with... ... this camera does all that... having a wider field of vision (than competition), and macro capabilities have been plusses... maybe those higher end pros and knowledgeable hobbyist will ask for more, but for the avid boater, climber, hiker, and general outdoors enthusiast this is the real deal... only thing wishing for - is write time to disk could be bit faster, but shooting at highest quality level - could drop pic quality, however knew about write time up front, and enjoy being able to blow up and crop... uses standard SDLC, according to Pentax Support - higher quality level II or III cards, will result in only minimally faster write times... have gotten a couple extra batteries for longer trips

Small size, waterproof to 10 feet, dust resistant, relatively easy to operate. All in all a good buy for outdoor activity. Extensive menu for different operations is a bit of a time sink to learn but many options make for better flexibility after going up the learning curve.

Buy an extra battery

I bought this camera to take on a week long (no electricity) dory trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It took great pictures and was lots of fun to have going through the white water rapids. However, I guess because it only has an LCD display (no viewfinder) its battery only lasted through about 150 pictures. I wish I had taken an extra (charged) battery with me on the trip. You can see the pictures here (along with the ones I took with my Nikon D80) http://flickr.com/photos/lastwyf/sets/72157608374268512/

Excellent camera, much maligned

I was hesitant to even order this camera, given the not just negative, but virulent reviews I read from some of the reviewers. However, I was attracted by the many advertised features of this camera being sold for such a low price. I ordered it and found the well written instruction booklet (a half inch thick) to allow easy mastery of the camera. I don't believe many of the reviewers have either knowledge of the digital camera concept... or even bothered to read the instructions. This is an excellent camera which has more features than any I've ever owned. If you pay attention to how to operate it, you won't find a nicer camera and certainly not at the price offered. This ain't no Brownie Hawkeye!!!!!!

Great Camera for travel

This camera was purchased for my husband to travel to Indonesia into the rain forest for work. He is a paramedic and loved the 7x zoom, the fact that the camera is water resistant is helpful in the rainforest enviroment that he is traveling in. The small compact design and great price all were factors in our buying this camera. We first saw it at [...] but item was sold out when we went to purchase it so i found it on Amazon and was very happy with the price and service.

Buyer beware

I purchased the Optio Z10 from a salesman that assured me this was THE camera to be used on my frequent excursions in the outdoors. I loved the fact that the lens did not extend from the camera body (1 less moving part) what I did not realize is that the LCD screen is so fragile, it cracked while in the camera case on my belt. Having bought an extended warranty I was informed Pentax would not cover the damage. I wasted $300.00 on the camera and warranty and was given very poor service in the repair shop. Don't be a sucker like I was and buy a good product from a responsible company.

Questions & Answers
Question : when my pentax optio 50 digital camera is on the screen just shows coloured lines. It will not take pics, why?
I have loaded pics on to my laptop with the camera last night, since then when its turned on on the screen is just colouerd lones. None of the buttons or zoom works. I have changed the batteries, taken memory card out and in. It is about 2yrs old the camera.

Answer:
i work in an electrical shop and can tell you ANY fault with a camera is usually not worth repairing...it sounds like a serious prob..and the average camera reair is AU$250, (i dont know what couyntry your in but here that would be the equivalent to buying a new half decent camera)

Question : How do I configure my pentax digital camera to my Dell computer so I can make videos?
I can view my digital camera videos but I cant copy them to a CD/DVD?

Answer:
go to start programs accessories entertainment windows movie maker put your movies into the movie maker it will change the format for you

Question : Pentax digital camera, cannot play movie clips?
I have a Pentax OPTIO M 20 when I go to look at the stuff I have taken it says camera cannot play this image and sound, why it is only 3 months old? It should and used to play video clips with sound

Answer:
Are you viewing it on your computer? If so, the camera your using may have a bizarre file format your computer does not recognize. If you don't understand that then I'll change it to simple terms. When you save a file you can tell that there should be a small amount of letters after the file. Such as .gif .jpeg . avi and so on. Well when you record something, your camera could save the file in a format such as .avi that your computer doesn't have the necessary hardware, software, or upgrade to have the ability to read it. Local computer places can help you with this. Or even a help site on the web. I hope this helps. If your viewing it on your camera, fist check the manual and menu on the camera. If nothing mentions or resembles your problem, try going to a nearby circuit city or best buy and talk to them about the problem. I recommend circuit city since in my town they tend to be more useful. I hope you don't give up on taking picture and films. who knows... you could be the next YouTube star XD

Question : How do you set the DPI setting on a Pentax*istDs digital camera.?
It currently shows it as shooting at 72 DPI, but hte camera is set at 6 megapixels shot in the fine mode.Whats up?

Answer:
I wouldn't worry about the DPI figure until you print. The DPI figure is actually not related to the number of pixels that the camera is capturing. I think the Pentax defaults to 72 dpi no matter what resolution you pick. The DPI figure is also essentially meaningless until you decide to print. If you were to print a 6 megapixel image at 72 dpi, the long side of the print would measure (3000/72) 41.6 inches! Here's the steps I taken when I want to print a picture: 1. Decide how larger I want the print to be 2. Resize the image (change the number of pixels) to correspond to the size I choose in step 1 at approximately 300dpi. (For example, If I choose 8x12 inches in step 1, I resize the image to 2400 x 3600 pixels). 3. Change the DPI from 72 to 300 4. Print 300 is generally considered the optimum dpi for printing although many people like the results they get at DPI's as low as 180. P.S. You may have gotten a quicker response or more responses if you had posted in the Cameras category

Question : Is it true that I could use lenses from my Pentax MX on this digital camera?
I have a Pentax IST dl DSLR Camera, and I know that the lenses that will fit are somewhat of a wide variety, but I wanted to know if lenses from a Pentax MX will fit on this, in manual mode of course. Thanks a lot.

Answer:
Yes. The MX uses K and KA lenses, so.... From the Pentax press release for your camera: 11. Compatibility with PENTAX interchangeable lenses The *istDL offers the outstanding benefit of lens interchangeability, letting the user take advantage of the wide selection of PENTAX interchangeable lenses for use with diversified subjects and applications.** ** PENTAX K-, KA-, KAF- and KAF2-mount 35mm-format lenses can be used without an adapter or modification. PENTAX screw-mount 35mm-format lenses and PENTAX 645- and 67-system lenses can be used with an adapter. Some functions may not be available with certain lenses.

Question : Does anyone know anything about a Pentax Digital Camera?
Is it a descent camera or would I be wasting my money on a crappy camera? It is a Pentax E10. I dont know much about digital cameras so I would appreciate any help! Even if it is just an opinon!

Answer:
Comcast Shopping does not rate this camera very highly. The users seem to really like the Pentac M10, which does not cost too much more than the E10. I admit that there are only 4 reviews for the M10 and 3 for the E10, but the users had some really nasty things to say about the E10.

Question : Problem with my Pentax digital camera. New batteries keep saying batteries depleted?
My screen on my Pentax digital camera keeps saying batteries depleted even though I have new batteries in the camera. Help

Answer:
I dont know which model you have from Pentax but my model Optio 30 also has the same trouble. My experience is if you have a pair of new alkalines it will work otherwise not at all. Rechargable batteries should do better but I never tried them. I tried CRV3 once, it is good but of a little bit more initial cost. It will do better if you follow some strategies to avoid battery consumption such as turning off the LCD screen, less use of zooming and flash, etc. Otherwise, Pentax is better in performance than many cameras and my model is very good for shooting practise.

Question : Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras?
Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras compared to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Casio etc?

Answer:
Pentax is a camera/imaging company first, just like Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Leica. Sony, Panasonic and Casio are consumer electronic companies and make cameras along with other items. Pentax quality is right there with the best of them and far better than companies like Casio. Sony and Panasonic do make good cameras, especially now that Sony has taken over the Konika Minolta camera business. Pentax is definitely a good, solid choice.
