With four aspherical lenses and six aspherical surfaces, including an EA (Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical) lens, Panasonic's DMC-FX35 Lumix digital camera features a 25mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with a 4x optical zoom that's compact enough to fit in a slim, stylish body. This advanced lens system allows you to capture images with a sense of spatial breadth and depth that simply isn't possible with a 35mm camera. Set the FX35 to iA mode and let the five Intelligent Auto functions team up to help prevent shooting errors. Intelligent Exposure corrects lighting differences, so images come out just the way you see them; Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the focus and exposure settings. The FX35 can record motion images with sensational 1280 x 720 HD resolution at 30fps. You can use the zoom, too, and capture some truly dramatic shots. f=4.4-17.6mm (35mm Equiv. - 25-100mm) Focal Length 2.5 Diagonal Polycrystalline TFT LCD Display (230K dots) Focusing Area Normal - 50cm - infinity, Macro / Intelligent AUTO / Clipboard - wide 5cm/Tele 50cm - infinity 8 - 1/2,000 sec. Good for outdoor wide-angle photos

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35S is good for outdoor photos, but indoor flash photos have not met expectations. Using the flash results in circular blotches in some photos, and washed-out yellow-tinged appearance in others. Outdoors, the wide-angle lens has been great for large-group pictures. So far, I have relied only on automatic settings, as I have no particular expertise in photography.

love the camera

For several years, I have searched the camera world for a digital camera that had the capabilities I required. Finally the digital world is evolving beyond a point and shoot digital. My Lumix camera is wonderful and easy to learn. the buying experience with Amazon is clean, fast, and without a hitch. Kudos.

i asked for a recommendation from my friend who is a photographer before i get a camera and he recommended this one. i like it alot.

small size, great pics and HD video

The title says it all. OK, one possible shortcoming: You cannot operate the zoom while shooting video. I haven't found it to be a big issue, because I know to plan ahead... and the HD is so good it really doesn't make a big difference.
The camera is durable... it survived all of the (non-water) rides at Disney FL in my pocket for a week with no issues or blemishes to the case. It seems to take very nice photos of very large mice and ducks.
Get the extreme III chip... it allows you to shoot faster photos. That's a key point... if you have kids or other creatures that move quickly, this is a good tool to capture the moment. Burst mode exists, but I've rarely had a need for it.

Decent Camera but it should perform better for the price

While I like the camera design and menu layout I'm disappointed with its performance in situations where it is low light. While it does get a picture off they have lots of image noise. I also purchased this camera for its video recording capabilities and while the video looks great although it doesn't seem to focus once you start recording (I can get over this) the sound quality is horrid. Everything I record has so much hissing you can't even hear the sounds. This is the most disappointing part of the camera I really wanted to record small things for my wife but instead I find myself pulling out the full video camera anyhow. Also when taking videos outside if the sun hits the sensor it will turn a portion of the video purple. I'm not sure if this happens on others camera but I never had this problem on my old Sony Cybershot.

This camera has been really good when we are outside at a park and where light is plentiful.

If I was to make this decision again I would probably look at a Canon or Nikon camera. I would not recommend this product.

Great Camera

Got this for my girlfriend for our anniversary, she absolutely loved it. We had two friend's weddings to go to that weekend and it was perfect for it. So many cameras only have 3 zoom, it was nice to have 6 to get shots further away. The delay between shots is kinda slow but besides that its a great camera, and at a great price.

mom love's it!

My Mom just loves this camera.I bought this camera for her birthday. She has found it very easy to use and loves the picture quality. I own a lumix TZ3 and I love it over my old Canon digital. The picture quality is great. I never saw the camera in this review because I had it sent directly to my mom. But she's very happy and taking lots of pictures. I would say it's a great camera for an 72 year old or anyone to start out on. And the price was great for the quality of photos and camera you get. The only thing I would caution is the LCD is only 2 or 2 1/2".

Good camera for the price

This is a good camera for the price. Of course, I had to buy mine about a year ago when the price was $200, now that its down to $100 its even better for the price.
Pros: great zoom, large screen, easy to navigate menu (you just have to read the manual when you first get it), decent megapixels, durable (I've dropped it several times with only a couple scratches on the top of the camera).
Cons: No sound playback. It records sound, but has no built-in speaker to replay it on your camera. No built-in rechargeable battery. You must buy AA's for the camera, and even then the video recording drains the life so quickly. I'd advise you to buy rechargeable AA batteries (around $20). Camera is a little bulky. It's more expensive brother is 10x zoom, and is thinner!
I'm 14, was 13 when I got it for my birthday. I'm entering a photography contest with a photo taken with this camera, although I'm looking to sell it and buy a better one. I'm really disappointed to see it only sells for $85, when I paid $200!

Best point and shoot!

I've been loyal to Canon products for some time. This is a far better cam than any of the point and shoot cams I've had from Canon (and those are easily twice the price of this $199 Lumix). I didn't buy here, so I got it cheaper. Still, at $300, this would be a better buy than the $500+ Canon cam I have....just not as compact. Other than being the size of a cigarette pack (large to me), the USB cable is not the more readily available type, and the AA batts are not as robust as a Canon batt pack. Image stabilization puts this way over any other Sony or Canon cam I've used, not to mention the superior 6x Lieca optics. You just don't get that anywhere else, AND it's a bargain price.

Customer Review :

First Impressions very positive

When Panasonic announced their new cameras, I was interested in this model for its size, lens and image size. They have ceased the race for megapixel king and I was hoping image quality and not megapixels would become important.

Camera is 10MP, and has a 5x wide angle zoom. Plenty of MP for most uses and users.

The 5X zoom, while not the smoothest when zooming, the range is really appreciated. From a wide to a nice short tele! Very useful. On of my favorite things to do on vacation is to make "two-fers" self portraits of my wife and I. Not easy to do with most point and shoots, not wide enough to capture people and ambiance. This one fits the bill nicely!

First impressions: Camera is smaller than I had expected. This is a plus. It is the same size dimensionally as the Sony Cybershot T-5 it replaces. Also a plus. It is lighter than the Sony, and does not have that "solid" feeling. I consider this a neutral or slight minus.

Fast on the Draw, acceptable shutter lag from this class of camera (I use a D2X as well). Facial recognition focus seems to work too.

One of the most easy to navigate and use menus I have come across. It is distilled to a bare minimum.

Wish it captured RAW data.

I had been concerned, and started to have buyers remorse before I received the camera when I read some reviews of the predecessor about noise in poorly illuminated settings. This does not seem to be a problem. My abbreviated testing in low light has very acceptable results. (Your mileage may vary of course.)

For the price, this seems to be quite a nice camera for a carry everywhere camera.

Great snapshot camera

Excellent small, convenient snapshot camera. All of the controls are really easy to use and in the right positions. The picture quality is outstanding and there is plenty of control over the size of the files. The only drawback that I found is that it does not have a fully manual setting for the exposure and the longest exposure setting appears to be about 1 sec. I am sure that I won't need these settings too often. Overall an excellent purchase. I would recommend it.

Great Camera and Features - small package!!

This camera has proven to be far better than I could have ever hoped!! I purchased this camera after my previous point-shoot style camera was damaged while sandbagging a levee in Iowa...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55P was ordered as a hurried replacement before I left on a trip. The camera has excellent lense quality and an outstanding array of features. I really appreciated that the menus and functioning are pretty intuitive if you have experience using cameras. I've mostly worked with Canon products previously and still like that gear very much. Even though I had not used a Panasonic before, locating features was easy and intuitive. I purchased this unit instead of the Canon because the Panasonic is a smaller, flatter camera that offers all of the same features that I wanted for much less money.

Simply put, I have not used a small camera which produced such high quality photos and offered such great flexibility of use. The flash is powerful and offers several settings. I've used the camera in a variety of situations ranging from concerts, over dinner, by a campfire, macro photos of bugs, and in the dead of night. All situations resulted in outstanding photos. The battery life has been very good. The wide angle is VERY useful. I just returned from 6 days of camping using the camera every day (not constantly) and never needed a charge.

I simply can't think of anything else I would like in such a camera. A great purchase that I could recommend to anyone.

The 10.1 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 features a powerful f2.8 Leica DC lens with 12x optical zoom. The lens focal length is equivalent to 35-420mm on a 35mm film camera and is enhanced by Mega Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) system. The DMC-FZ50's 10.1-megapixel high resolution CCD for its image sensor and Venus Engine III for the image processing LSI makes it possible to record a image at maximum ISO 1600 high sensitivity setting at full resolution. Furthermore, by dramatically reducing the noise levels that challenged its predecessor, the DMC-FZ50 is able to capture 10.1-megapixel full resolution images even in high sensitivity recording. The DMC-FZ50 is equipped with a new Function Button which serves as a shortcut to quickly set frequently-used settings such as recording image size, light metering, AF area, white balance, and ISO sensitivity. The 2-inch LCD flips out to 180 degrees, making it easier to view even when shooting from high or low angles. Finally, the battery life is greatly extended by approximately 29% compared with its predecessor allowing the FZ50 to shoot approximately 360 images on one charge. In addition to standard VGA 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second (fps) motion image recording, the DMC-FZ50 also records full-size movies in wide-aspect VGA 848 x 480 at 30 fps. THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GREAT BECAUSE OF LEICA...BUT

I thought this was going to be a great little camera but just because Leica made the lense and Panasonic makes the body doesn't mean that it is quality. Leica also sells the same camera but Leica's software is much better. I don't know if the CCD is the same in both cameras, but the Panasonic has way too much noise in the image. I dumped my camera and bought a Canon 50D. Now this is quality. If you buy a Canon be sure to buy L lenses. Hope this helps.

Close to Perfect

I bought this camera used. I had a few 12X cameras, I will be happy with this camera for a long time. It is a work of art to hold and use. I got use to the manual zoom pretty fast. The image quality is excellent. I hear about noise and noise reduction. I can see it, but only at full size on a large lcd monitor. Pixel peepers may see flaws, but in the real world, images from this camera make excellent 11X14 prints, maybe even larger. Colors are accurate, and images are sharp, and performance is pretty fast. It is a beast to carry around, like a family size can of beans around your neck. Still lighter than a SLR with equiv zoom.
The bottom line, this is the best you can get (in my opinion) in a 12X zoom or more, digital camera.

Just what I hoped for

I am not a digital camera maven, nor am I highly experienced. I use these devices for my work as a glass artist and I view them from a very utilitarian perspective. The fine points of Venus engine noise issues and sensor size mostly escape me, and I do not analyze image quality with a magnifying glass. Nearly all digital camera images look good to me (Leica lens or not), just like nearly all pizza tastes good to me too. I needed a 10 meg sensor, an articulated lens and a good zoom all with decent battery life. The Lumix FZ 50 delivered on all. The 10 meg sensor was not so I could print out poster sized images with good resolution, but rather so I could shoot an image on site, and later on zoom into details I may not have paid attention to. With my previous 5 meg camera it pixelated too quickly, but the 10 meg gives me the "blow up" I wanted. The articulated lens is something I got used to on my Olympus C5060, and now deem a necessity. I regularly shoot over my head, on the floor, at myself, etc. and the movable LCD lets this happen easily. I never use digital zoom, so a good optical was important, and the FZ 50's is great. I particularly like; The zoom is manual so it is quiet, has less moving parts to fail, uses less power, and is fast. You can also decrease your resolution size and effectively increase your zoom to get really close without resorting to digital zoom. Hand in hand with the sizable zoom is the image stabilization. I had never had this in a camera before and would either lug my tripod around or search for some kind of bracing. While the stabilization is fantastic and does away with some of the aforementioned props, when doing an extreme zoom or very low level lighting I still use a tripod. Starting with a full charge the battery life is more than up to a typical days use for me, but I still bought two extras as their price is so low. I only have a few improvements I would have liked. When using the LCD for a self portrait it does not invert the image. It is a little tricker to frame the shot when it is upside down, and I am puzzled as to why Panasonic did it that way. It would have also been better if the screen flipped out from the top, so you could use it extended while also using a tripod. I would have like a wireless remote. The self timer and corded remote shutter release is OK up to a point, but if I want to get 40 feet away and do multiple shots the wireless would have allowed that. This camera will only shoot RAW and jpgs. Since I was used to TIFF as my default it forces me to think more about my file handling, but I am getting used to it. While the file sizes are smaller, I wonder why Panasonic did not give the user the option for that format. In spite of my minor criticisms, I love this camera and have had no regrets. The more I use it the more I appreciate it. Accessories purchased: Two extra battery packs, Wide Angle lens, remote shutter release, external flash.

NICE UPGRADE FROM MY DMC-FZ7

This is the 3rd Panasonic Lumix that I have owned (previous 2 were the FZ5 and the FZ7). Again as with the previous 2, the FZ50 was an upgrade. I mainly upgrade to better enhance my photographic capabilities. I am far from being a pro but a notch higher than a novice. This camera provides flexibility and freedom to take your skills to the next level. First off, I like the 12x optical zoom (which can be extended up to 21x if you taper down the resolution). There are no gimmicks to this feature, what you see distance-wise in the EVF or LCD is exactly what the lens projects. The 10MP resolution is quite of an overkill considering that you can make oustanding prints in the 5-6MP range. Nevertheless, having the ability to increase/decrease the resolution is very handy and re-assuring. The swivel-screen LCD is also a dynamic feature. Very incrimental if you need to compose an angled shot. The function button (as with the joystick with the smaller FZ models) is a nice feature to have if you want to jump in directly to some features without a longer scroll time on the menu button. The ability to handle SDHC is great considering a lot of the memory cards out there now are high-capacity. The camera itself is light enough to carry for extended periods of time. The flash is strong enough for normal conditions although I would advise you to buy an external flash if you need to compose shots in extra-ordinary conditions. The ergonomics of this camera is simply amazing! I do not have huge hands but it seems to fit my hand at just the right place. Shutter buttons and all the other buttons are easily accessible. There's not a lot of unnecessary movement required. Everything is within handy reach. The ability to shoot at ISO values up to 1600 goes hand in hand with the new OIS abilities although I seldom require shooting at those high ISO figures. The Venus III engine is superb although in my experience, you have to fine tune the NR down to its lowest level (or turned off in some cases) to get an outstanding shot. The MEGA OIS works just right and works all the time. You can actually do a test yourself composing a shot, with the OIS turned ON/OFF to see the difference. And the good thing is, YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE! You also have the ability to do RAW with this camera but it is slow. JPEG is still the best. Unless you have a good photo editing software, JPEG will suit you fine in normal operating conditions. The Leica Lens is just superb, sharp and outstanding. No other camera (in my humble opinion) in this price-range and resolution can out-do the things you can be capable of doing. I'm very happy I bought this camera!

value for your money

I love my FZ 50! I loved my FZ30 also and it sold me on this one. For what you may spend on a lens for a digital SLR you can have this camera that suits 99% of my needs. A zoom range of 35-420mm (equivalent)tack sharp optics, hot shoe for external flash, rotateable electronic view finder, sturdy construction, and more features than most of us will ever use, this camera is a good value for the money. I was content with the FZ30 but when I saw the FZ50 megapixel lust overtook me! The only drawback I have encountered is when I use a pc sync to my studio lights the camera defaults to F/4.0 which is not enough depth of field/focus for me when I am shooting a group photo. (I know I could solve that problem if I bought the dedicated flash and made it sync to my lights.) It was delivered much faster than when I order from NY based camera stores. Happy hunting- Bill in AZ

Question : Lens rattle with new panasonic digital camera?
Hi, I just got a new Panasonic FZ18. I noticed that there is a rattle coming from the lens when I tip or handle the camera. Just wondered if this is common in this model??

Answer:
This may be normal. There is a loose element in the lens that, when in use, compensates for hand movement when using the optical image stabilization. Try turning the stabilizer on using Mode 2 and see if you hear the rattling under the same conditions. Mode 2 is continuous stabilization whereas Mode 1 is on-shot, I believe. Try Mode 1 also if you still hear rattling just in case.

Look at Nikon, or Canon My preference in the larger DSLR's are the Nikon's (of course!) Canon makes good stuff too, but I prefer the "ergonomics" or layout on the Nikon. In the smaller Point n shooters, Canon may have the slight edge. Both cameras are good, but Canon gives a larger selection of cameras with an "optical viewfinder" which I prefer in the bright sunlight. Those LCD viewfinders can be hard to see in bright sunlight. Make sure you get one with the VR (Vibration Reduction, Nikon) or the IS (Image Stabilization, Canon) to help you get good shots in the low light tough shooting conditions.

Panasonic digital camera does video in QuickTime format; can I change it to Windows Media?

Answer:
The easiest solution for converting QuickTime MOV files to a Windows Media compatible format is RAD Video Tools. You can covert the file to AVI with this app and then edit the AVI or use your video in any other application. Here's a tutorial on converting MOV files with RAD Video Tools: http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051003_convert_mov_to_avi.html
