good camera

Had and lost a panasonic camera before this one. Previous camera had a 10x optical zoom. I am happy to give up the extra zoom. This camera is much smaller...more pocket size, which is nice. Video is so good you would think it is a video camera. Night shots turn out very nice( did a few cityscape shots over a lake). Haven't actually used the camera a lot yet, but previous Lumix camera was really nice....The 25mm is awesome, it is very cool to take a picture of a room and get the whole room.

Panasonic DMC-FX37A 10.1MP Digital Camera
I haven't done any extensive testing of this camera, but everything seems fine. This is similar to my Panasonic DMC-TZ3, with less Zoom (5x) but more memory. The DMC-FX37A is quite slim and the battery charger is small, so it is very handy for travelling. I've used it for candle light photos (with and without the 'candle light scene' exposure preset. Not sure which I prefer - I edit my photos in Paint Shop Pro anyway. I did get some usable photos under very low light conditions. The extra wide angle is very handy for situations where you can't back up any further. I haven't used the movie mode yet.
So, I would recommend either the DMC-FX37A 10.1MP, or the DMC-TZ series. The latter is a bit larger with 10x zoom. Both have good lenses (Leica).

A great little camera

I bought this fx37 as a complement to my Canon 40D. First - it is small enougt to always bring it along. To get a good picture the first thing you must do is to bring a camera! Most of the time I bring my fx37 instead of my 40D. Second - the wide angle of 24ยค is great. It is easy to get photoes in a room and get most of the room in the picture. Third - the 5x optical zoom is large enough for most pictures you will need, special handheld with the anti-shake. The anti-shake is a great help to get clear pictures. There are many more things this camera can do - and it is so easy to handle. So, all in all, this p&s is quite a little camera and best of all - it takes GREAT pictures! I can recomend it as an all around camera and especially a camera to bring on regular vacation trips. My 40D will have to wait for the big African safari trips and similar special events.

With four aspherical lenses and six aspherical surfaces, including an EA (Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical) lens, Panasonic's DMC-FX35 Lumix digital camera features a 25mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with a 4x optical zoom that's compact enough to fit in a slim, stylish body. This advanced lens system allows you to capture images with a sense of spatial breadth and depth that simply isn't possible with a 35mm camera. Set the FX35 to iA mode and let the five Intelligent Auto functions team up to help prevent shooting errors. Intelligent Exposure corrects lighting differences, so images come out just the way you see them; Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the focus and exposure settings. The FX35 can record motion images with sensational 1280 x 720 HD resolution at 30fps. Love this camera!

I bought this camera for a trip to Mexico and am absolutely in love with it. The picture quality is fantastic. It takes great pics in really dark settings or really bright settings. I took a few videos with it as well and the sound quality is great as well.

The only con that I can think of is that if you move around a lot while taking your photos it will turn out blurry. But I only had 5-6 blurry photos out of 400, so it is merely a very minor inconvenience.

Would definitely recommend this camera!

It's decent enough

I usually drag around my big ol film cameras, and finally decided I needed something I could just put in my pocket. The Lumix is a point & shoot, and it pretty much controls how the picture will be taken. Which is fine. The quality is fine, it's small, and the shutter delay is minimal. Glad I bought it.

Not meet my expectation

I have purchased this camera and I was disappointed with the picture quality. Normally I do good amount of research before I purchase a product, but this was one of few that I had misjudgement on. I was looking for a wide angle camera so I started to look for a good one. I ran into this so I have read reviews and did research. After receiving the camera I tryed to take pictures, but I don't like most of the pictures that came out. I have 5 year old Konica Dimage and it take way better pictures. The worst thing about this camera is flash. It is weak!! The flash shows on the pictures very uneven. only few spots are bright enough to show up on the picture and surrounding is dark. I am very disappointed by the camera. It's too bad that none of the review mentioned this.

Lumix camera - excellent for indoor use

I reviewed lots of options, and ultimately it came down to the Lumix DMC-FX35D or the Fuji f100fd. Both are highly rated in low light, but I liked the wider angle from the Lumix. The camera performs flawlessly and does an excellent job in low light.

I love this camera. I have used several different digital cameras before and had many blurry pictures. This camera takes very crisp pictures with ease. Easy to use, I like the controls and the touch screen. Having both makes it easier to use.

Great camera, too much noise

I bought this camera due to its compact size, its wide angle lens, its long maximum exposure (60 seconds, I'm an astronomer and amateur astrophotographer), its manual controls, targeted tracking autofocus, and 'intelligent ISO mode'.

I nearly returned this camera because the images seemed to have blurry edges and like they were covered in dirt. Eventually I realized the pictures were NOT blurry (see #2 below), and if I was careful with my exposure and noise reduction settings I could make the noise look like film grain.

Combined with a mini travel tripod, I've managed to get some pretty nice night scenery (60 seconds, "full" manual controls) and nice portraits. That 25mm is great for scenery. (Incidentally, the "Scenery" scene mode fixes the focus at infinity, which is great for taking pictures of the Moon. Unfortunately, you can't control shutter speed or aperture, but see #7)

If the noise still bothers you, resizing the pictures to 7 megapixels or less (which can be done in-camera) should basically remove the problem.

Some random notes:
1.) The on-screen review can apparently zoom in farther (16x) than 100%; your photos are sharper than they appear on screen.
2.) I've seen some noticeable distortion at the corners of images taken at the full wide-angle.
3.) Contrary to the manual, switching to 7 and 5 and 3 megapixel modes is NOT just cropping out the center; they're merely scaled down versions of the full frame just like you'd expect. On the other hand, digital zoom WILL crop out the center.
4.) The Intelligent ISO mode actually works. It seems to be like tweaking the gamma in an image editor.
5.) Targeted autofocus does NOT work well. More often than not it can't seem to lock on the object I touched. On the other hand, once locked it tracks the object well.
6.) The Mega OIS image stabilization works wonders, but in low light it's usually not enough to make up for the longer exposures you'll need to see anything.
7.) You can set the desired exposure compensation for the 'Scenery' mode (and possibly others) by going to Aperture or Shutter mode, setting the exposure compensation, and switching back.
8.) The USB connector is microUSB, not miniUSB.
9.) It works with Linux out of the box! When you plug it in to a computer, it will ask you to select (via the joystick thingy) between MTP and PC connection, which seems to be a standard USB Mass Storage mode.
10.) I actually got pretty close to what Panasonic quotes for battery life.

Good: easy and portable for its capabily.
Bad: zoom do not work in movie mode.

The FX500 was intended to replace a Canon TX1 but even in well lit scenes, the TX1 still produces higher quality images - I returned the FX500.

Good repair service

I bought this camera with an 8GB memory card for a trip to Spain. It took great pictures for me while I was there and I was very pleased with it. A couple months later, however, the camera started taking pictures with lines of distortion in them, kind of like I was looking through blinds.

I wrote a note to include with the camera and quickly shipped it off to the repair center, I had found the address on Panasonic's web site somewhere. Less than two weeks later my camera was back on my doorstep good as new.

The camera has been working very well for me ever since. A trip to France and a trip to Costa Rica tested that out with great results.

Great Camera

Got this for my girlfriend for our anniversary, she absolutely loved it. We had two friend's weddings to go to that weekend and it was perfect for it. So many cameras only have 3 zoom, it was nice to have 6 to get shots further away. The delay between shots is kinda slow but besides that its a great camera, and at a great price.

mom love's it!

My Mom just loves this camera.I bought this camera for her birthday. She has found it very easy to use and loves the picture quality. I own a lumix TZ3 and I love it over my old Canon digital. The picture quality is great. I never saw the camera in this review because I had it sent directly to my mom. But she's very happy and taking lots of pictures. I would say it's a great camera for an 72 year old or anyone to start out on. And the price was great for the quality of photos and camera you get. The only thing I would caution is the LCD is only 2 or 2 1/2".

Best point and shoot!

I've been loyal to Canon products for some time. This is a far better cam than any of the point and shoot cams I've had from Canon (and those are easily twice the price of this $199 Lumix). I didn't buy here, so I got it cheaper. Still, at $300, this would be a better buy than the $500+ Canon cam I have....just not as compact. Other than being the size of a cigarette pack (large to me), the USB cable is not the more readily available type, and the AA batts are not as robust as a Canon batt pack. Image stabilization puts this way over any other Sony or Canon cam I've used, not to mention the superior 6x Lieca optics. You just don't get that anywhere else, AND it's a bargain price.

Good camera for the price

This is a good camera for the price. Of course, I had to buy mine about a year ago when the price was $200, now that its down to $100 its even better for the price.
Pros: great zoom, large screen, easy to navigate menu (you just have to read the manual when you first get it), decent megapixels, durable (I've dropped it several times with only a couple scratches on the top of the camera).
Cons: No sound playback. It records sound, but has no built-in speaker to replay it on your camera. No built-in rechargeable battery. You must buy AA's for the camera, and even then the video recording drains the life so quickly. I'd advise you to buy rechargeable AA batteries (around $20). Camera is a little bulky. It's more expensive brother is 10x zoom, and is thinner!
I'm 14, was 13 when I got it for my birthday. I'm entering a photography contest with a photo taken with this camera, although I'm looking to sell it and buy a better one. I'm really disappointed to see it only sells for $85, when I paid $200!

Questions & Answers
Question : Whats better a Nikon or Panasonic digital camera?
Trying to buy a new camera, im looking at a Nikon and a Panasonic, which one should i get?

Answer:
Look at Nikon, or Canon My preference in the larger DSLR's are the Nikon's (of course!) Canon makes good stuff too, but I prefer the "ergonomics" or layout on the Nikon. In the smaller Point n shooters, Canon may have the slight edge. Both cameras are good, but Canon gives a larger selection of cameras with an "optical viewfinder" which I prefer in the bright sunlight. Those LCD viewfinders can be hard to see in bright sunlight. Make sure you get one with the VR (Vibration Reduction, Nikon) or the IS (Image Stabilization, Canon) to help you get good shots in the low light tough shooting conditions.
