Customer Review :

A Terrific Advanced Compact Camera (Thank You Panasonic!)

The Panasonic LX3 is a great advanced compact camera for the photo enthusiast. The photo quality is terrific, the build quality is great, the size is perfect, and it has all the manual and automatic controls you could ever need.

First let me start by saying that I have always wanted a Panasonic digital camera, most Panasonics have always had great lenses, a good interface, great built quality, and image stabilizers. I never bought one, though, because photo quality was subpar, with lots of image noise and noise reduction mushiness. The LX3 is the first Panasonic camera I have bought and I love it.

The best aspect of the camera has to be that lens. It's super-wide at 24mm and is great for indoor shots, and landscapes. Moreover, the maximum aperture of the lens is f2.0 to f2.8 and really helps in low light allowing a faster shutter speed and avoiding the flash, while macro shots benefit from the greater depth-of-field. The lens is also sharp from corner to corner, and the jpeg processing removes any barrel distortion and fringing. The only downside to the lens is the 60mm reach; so take that into consideration before buying.

The rest of the camera is no slouch either. The sensor is a bit bigger than most point and shots and has a modest 10-megapixel resolution. Panasonic claims to have kept the megapixels at 10 to increase sensitivity and decrease noise, and it has worked to an extent. If you don't expect SLR quality at higher ISO speeds you'll be pleased. From ISO 80-200 I have no complaints with image quality. There is plenty of detail, good exposure, and natural looking colors. Above ISO 200 to about ISO 400 it's still plenty acceptable and depends on the subject matter and lighting. Anything above ISO 400, in my eyes, is for emergency use, or photos that are not very important. At that point most of the detail is mushed away and noise is pretty high. Of course, if you prefer to do the processing yourself you can always shoot RAW.

The camera is a good size, not large, but definitely not a pocket camera either, the protruding lens sees to that (see my included picture). Build quality is great; most of the camera is made of metal (even the front of the lens cap). The 3" screen on the back is bright and clear with a high resolution. There are manual controls for pretty much every function, two custom white balance settings, and two custom setting on the mode dial. Of course there is also a fully automatic mode and plenty of scene modes as well. I especially like the different film modes to tweak your results, and the two custom film modes, which even give you control over noise reduction. The aspect ratio switch on the lens let's you shoot in 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9, and the camera also allows you to bracket in the three ratios.

The only minor negatives I have about the camera is as follows: 1) The lens retracts too quickly when you switch into review mode, delaying the next shot, 2) The lens cap can be finicky to put on, the release buttons are quite small, 3) There is no sensor to prevent the camera from extending the lens when the cap is on, I always turn it to playback mode when I turn it off just in case, 4) The battery door, and playback/record switch don't feel as sturdy as the rest of the camera, 5) The flash release switch is small, 6) The camera can be slow when going from record to playback.

All in all... despite the few flaws it's an awesome camera, and a great companion for my digital SLR.

Great compliment to a Digital SLR

Great little camera. Easy to carry around with you, and capable of making print-quality photos. The limited focal length is a downside, but there are many upsides that make this a great camera in my opinion. The LCD is large and bright. The HD video capture capability is very convenient. Great bang for the buck.

Ideal if you like wide and you like control...

There is already a lot of info out there on this camera, so I'll just quickly highlight a few things, mostly from the perspective of someone who normally shoots with DSLRs.

- Unlimited control - You can control just about anything on this camera, and a surprising amount of it very quickly through the "quick menu" accessed through the joystick.

- Wonderful wide angle lens - The 24mm equivalent field of view at the wide end is wonderful for landscapes, street photography and tight quarters. The fast F/2.0 max aperture and IS make the camera an awesome low light performer. I have a Fuji F30, long considered the king of compact low light cameras, and in reality the LX3 is able to get far more low light shots than the F30.

- Excellent user interface - Coming from almost exclusively using Canon cameras I was concerned about another user interface to deal with. I love the LX3 interface, it is so intuitive and transparent that I'm amazed that I often can get settings the way I want faster than with my SLRs.

- Excellent RAW shooting - The camera has a fairly decent RAW buffer (about three shots) and doesn't slow down at all in RAW shooting. Remember, it is still a compact camera and thus shot to shot time is longer than an SLR, but the point here is that the speed is the same regardless of whether you are shooting RAW or JPEG. Most of the few compacts that shoot RAW suddenly become glacially slow if you actually try to use the RAW mode - not the LX3.

Those are probably the four things that made me fall in love with this camera. Be advised of course that it isn't the perfect camera for everyone. If you tend to shoot in auto all the time (and the LX3 does have an excellent auto mode) you really won't be using a great part of the LX3's advantages. If you aren't comfortable working with the relatively restricted 2.5x zoom range you might also be frustrated and would probably be happier with cameras that have longer zoom ranges either by being larger (Canon G10, Panasonic FZ28) or by making a few more compromises in the lens design (Panasonic TZ5).

This camera really is a "photographers" camera that gives you not only complete creative control, but most importantly easy and transparent control through its wonderful user interface.

Even the variable aspect ratio setting, which I thought was sort of gimmicky when I read about it, has proven to be a feature I use almost continuously. The LX3's novel implementation of this (the different aspects preserve the diagonal angle of view rather than just cropping down one of the other aspect settings) is wonderful.

The size is wonderful, it is truly pocketable unlike the Canon G10 (of course the G10 has other benefits).

Being a wide angle junky I actually did purchase the wide angle adapter lens for this camera. Wow, wow, wow. I always thought these accessory type lenses were a silly idea, but this one gives an 18mm equivalent field of view and the optical performance is stunning for such a wide angle lens. My Canon XTi and 10-22mm no longer need to be hauled around for ultra-wide shots.

Finally, to repeat a point made by many, this is NOT a DSLR replacement. It can't do everything a DSLR can. It does have way more manual control than almost any other compact, it can shoot RAW much faster than most compacts, and its imager size and pixel density are better than the vast majority of compacts. That said, it doesn't offer the fast autofocus of an SLR, the deep RAW buffers and fast frame rates of an SLR, nor high ISO performance anything like an SLR. But it is a camera that performs admirably in many of those departments and most importantly it does a great job of getting out of the photographers way just like a SLR. I have now taken the LX3 on two dedicated landscape shooting trips instead of my SLR, so for some tasks is can be a replacement and for others a complement. Don't expect miracles, but do expect to be pleasantly surprised if you've shot with other compacts.

As long as you are aware of the restrictions of the 24-60mm focal range you just simply can not get a better compact camera.

Not quite an SLR, but very close...

Camera packed with many useful features, good quality pictures and video. the best you can get in a compact camera. Ideal if you want decent pictures and do not want to carry a bulky slr.

Great Camera, worth the wide angle and wide F stop!

I had to get one due to its larger sensor and the 24mm wide angle lens and the large f2 stop, as my Canon G9 didn't have either. Taking pics with it is great, but you have to remember to just tap the zoom button before taking a shot; you're starting at 24mm so unless you want to risk wide angle distortion for a portrait, you'll want to at least go to 28mm or higher to reduce the possibility. Some of my early portrait shots had severe wide angle lens distortion towards the edges, and faces got a little skewed there. But otherwise, that's what I bought the camera for, which is to take wide angle shots, and also the f2 really helps in low lights and also blurring backgrounds. All in all, a great camera.

Customer Review :

I love this camera !!

I am a hobby photographer , especially of flowers and nature, so , I was looking for a camera with excellant macro & zoom.

I researched all the internet reviews and also read the reviews here at Amazon. There are almost 100 reviews for the FZ28 black model, same camera, just a different color & the silver model has a lower price !! There are also some great pics to look at on the Amazon reviews.

Based on my findings I bought this camera, and love it !! I first thought it was going to be hard to operate , but a short once over with the manual while the battery was charging (about 2 hours), I was ready to take pics. I was very pleased with the shots...no red eye in a close up portrait, natural skin tones. White flowers did great ,no flash wash out. Zoom was fanatastic. Face detection great ! Picture from a distance in a dimly lit room was great. This camera can make you look like a pro at taking pics !

I was always a AA battery fan but after seeing my friend's similar style Kodak camera eat them after only a few shots, I am glad this camera had the litium ion and charger. I ordered a spare that was recommended on the reviews.

I look forward to learning more about what this camera can do from a camera geek friend of mine who is anxious to see it after sending them some shots I took. Great camera for a hobby photographer !

What gives on price?

This item: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28S 10.1MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) has gone up $40 in price just in the last 3 weeks. It was $279.99 just before Christmas when I had hoped to get it as a gift. I assumed that I could buy it just after Christmas (naively thinking it might even go on sale) only to find it then listed at $309.99. That was 3 days ago and I looked at it today and it is now $319.99. I guess I had better hurry up and buy it or it might be $500! Is it so popular in this economy that the price has to escalate by 15% in several weeks? I was down to this camera and the Nikon equivalent. This price escalation for the Panasonic makes the Nikon look much more buyable.

Wouldn't Trade It For Anything Else!

I've had the FZ28 for about a month and a half now, and i take it everywhere! it iA feature suits most situations perfectly, but, it's user-friendly enough to allow for my still-learning-self to experiment when i want without getting overly frustrated.

it takes crystal clear HD video, as well.

the only complaint, occasionally, the Flash washes out pictures. but, only occasionally, and that may very well be my own fault.

if you purchase this camera, you'll be pleased.

Great camera, but not for me.

I ordered this camera to replace my Canon A620 because the flash went out. It's a great camera for still shots and portraits. I take a lot of pictures traveling, or of grandchildren or pets. I took the camera out to take pictures of the kids playing and I missed every shot. There is few seconds lag between the time the button is pushed to take the picture and when the camera captures the shot. Just enough time for facial expressions to change. My canon caught the picture when the button was pushed. I also noted there was a longer lag when using the flash from the time the flash fired to the time the camera captures the pic. It's long enough that subjects think the picture has been taken and move. I also noted some blurring in the active mode. Clarity of pictures is also not up to par with my old canon. I am returning this camera. I am having a really hard time replacing the A620 as so far nothing has been up to par. Also wish Canon had more affordable long range zoom cameras.

I do not understand all the great reviews!

OK, so I do not quite understand the 5 stars everyone has given. I bought this camera because I wanted to take pictures of my four boys and I read almost all of the great reviews. I am not a professional photographer. I am just a mom who wants to take great pictures of my kids. I also happen to teach technology to elementary kids (K-5) and we do a lot of projects with digital cameras (we primarily use Canons, but I saw these great reviews). I have been searching for a camera for personal use and I did not want to take the plunge into the DSLR cameras. I guess I will have to. This camera takes fuzzy pictures no matter what setting I am on. It is so frustrating! I would say if you are taking pics of subjects that do not move at all (ie. they do not breathe) then this could be the camera for you. If not, don't waste your time or money. This camera will not work for you. Also, if you are into outdoor photography, then this could possibly work, but indoor pics are horrible and grainy. If you are a parent who wants pictures of your kids, do not buy this camera!

Simply set the 10.1-megapixel DMC-FS5 to iA mode and let the four Intelligent Auto functions team up to help prevent shooting errors. Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the focus and exposure settings. The 30mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens with 4x optical zoom takes wider shots than an ordinary 35mm lens. This is helpful in small rooms or crowded places, for example, letting you fit more people into a group photo. Good, but horrible

Never purchased a panasonic camera before, and probably wont do it again. The camera it self is well built and very easy to use. But the picture quality is terrrrible, when you zoom into the image on the computer you can see all the pixels are just a big mashed up mess, with no detail at all. Its great if your just making 4x6 prints. But if you want anything else i would stray away from this camera, its processor is obviously not powerful enough for the 10 megapixel censor.

Poor focus, slow shutter response, what's the point of using it?

I bought this as a pocket camera to complement my D-SLR (there you have it, I know what a good camera should produce), and my expectations were low, as I didn't need this to be a 'great' camera.
I used the Panasonic to take about 200 pictures in varying conditions inside and outside. In all environments, about 2/3 of the pictures were out of focus as the camera tried to focus on random things in the field of vision. The shutter response (e.g., from when you push the button to the time it captures the image) was also incredibly unpredictable (sometimes instant, sometimes 3-5 seconds).
The control buttons for the camera are also incredibly small and close together, leading to inadvertently pressing them.
I've used many other sub-compact cameras, and while many of them mis-focus some of the time, this Panasonic sets a new (and unacceptable) low.

Super, Super!

GREAT camera!!!

I've owned this camera for about 6 months and, for the price, it is one of the best deals out there.

Lowering the megapixels to 5 allows for 12x zoom. OIS works very well.

Takes great pictures in almost all lighting conditions. Only indoors (low light) could be better but not at all bad. Night shots are AMAZING (as long as you use a tripod for the long exposure).

Size is a little bulky compared to other compact cameras but other compacts don't feature 10x zoom.

iA works pretty well for taking pictures on the fly but they can get a little grainy. I prefer to keep the ISO @ 100 but it isn't ideal for all situations.

The display is big and bright and one of the best features is being able to zoom while shooting a video. Also love the positioning of the tripod mount to the door for the memory. I can easily swap memory cards without removing the camera from the tripod.

I had a Fujifilm Finepix F50fd 12MP Digital Camera with 3 x Optical Image Stabilization and that had the edge in detail and low light shooting but only had a 3x zoom. It was dropped during a trip and quit functioning. I've dropped the TZ4 twice (not as hard as the Fuji though) and it is still going strong.

I would not hesitate to recommend this camera to a friend.

This camera is fantastic. I bought a TZ1 several years ago and really loved the small size and 10X optical zoom. It was great for vacation shooting. I decided to give it to my daughter so I could get the "same" camera with 8 Mega Pixels.

There's no other point and shoot camera this small with 10x optical zoom.
I recommend it completely.

it's a really good camera but there are some details that you need to know:
AA bateries (bad)
medium to low quality in really dark and low light conditions (bad)
does not come with a decent bag it's just a white paper (bad)
5X optical zoom plus 3X digital zoom (good)
uses SD cards up to 2GB and HCSD cards class 4 (good)
the box is really little so expect a low charge on courier users.

Good Value, Slow Camera

I bought the LZ8K as a little spare cam to toss in my motorcycle's saddlebags when I'm off on a ride. On the plus side, it's small, easy to operate, the lens is very sharp, and battery life (I'm using rechargeable AA Lithium batteries) is quite good. Offsetting these plusses, is the very slow trigger-to-shot reactions in poor light or indoors. Recycling of the flash system is also quite slow. I never seem to know exactly when the camera will actually take the picture -- resulting in numerous wasted efforts. Recently, I've set it to bracket with three exposures each time I take a pic -- hoping that one of them will suffice. This is a very good camera for still life or nature photography -- macro shots are fantastic. This is the wrong camera for action photography.

VERY slow

I purchased this camera after reading reviews that said it's image quality was among the best of budget digital cameras. After using the camera for several months, I would be willing to sacrifice some image quality for speed. This camera is insufferably slow. The moment I was hoping to capture is usually passed by the time the camera focuses on it's subject to the time the camera has snapped the picture. And if you're using flash forget about it. After taking a picture with the flash, it will be 10 seconds before you are able to fire off a second shot.
Do not buy this camera unless you are only using it for landscape shots or pictures where the subject will be sitting perfectly still for long periods of time.

Great camera at a great price.

I got this camera for $99 which is a steal. It takes great pictures and it's loaded with features. The bonus is that it can be completely manually controlled which is incredible for this price point. It practially impossible to find a pocket sized digital camera with full manual features. I was going to get another digital elph after the ccd on my old Canon went out but then I saw this camera on Amazon and decided to give it a try. I can't really find any flaws with this camera so far.

Questions & Answers
Question : Canon vs. panasonic digital camera?
I have an canon camera now (a elph), it's a few years old and I would like to upgrade. I'm not an expert photographer but I would like to start taking some nice pictures of wildlife. For this I am looking for a camera with somewhere around 10x optical zoom. Canon has one, but I have read you have to wait around 10 seconds between taking pictures when you use the flash. I don't like that. Plus it is a little bigger than your typical small digital camera. I saw panasonic has a camera with 10x optical zoom and it is smaller. It received some really good reviews on the circuit city website. I have never heard much about a panasonic camera, are they good? Do they take good pictures? I have always had a canon and been in love with it, but they just dont seem to have a good canon camera for what I'm looking for (10x optical zoom). Can anyone give me their opinions on these types of cameras or possibly other brands of cameras that have good optical zoom capabilities? Thanks! :) I still want a smaller "point and shoot" camera. That is why I am not looking at SLR cameras. I want the best of both worlds. :)

Answer:
Canon is the better camera as far as i know. It is one of the best in general. http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/canon_ratings.html Go with the camera that is calling to you if theyre said to be the same.

Question : I want to purchase Digital Camera Panasonic Fz50 want to know is there any issues with this camera?
Would Like to know from people who have this camera so that they could share first hand experience.

Answer:
Terrific camera. The top of the line for 'big zoom' style digicams. Not great for low light/high ISO work though. It's a bit large. You may also want to consider a DSLR.

Question : Whats better a Nikon or Panasonic digital camera?
Trying to buy a new camera, im looking at a Nikon and a Panasonic, which one should i get?

Answer:
Look at Nikon, or Canon My preference in the larger DSLR's are the Nikon's (of course!) Canon makes good stuff too, but I prefer the "ergonomics" or layout on the Nikon. In the smaller Point n shooters, Canon may have the slight edge. Both cameras are good, but Canon gives a larger selection of cameras with an "optical viewfinder" which I prefer in the bright sunlight. Those LCD viewfinders can be hard to see in bright sunlight. Make sure you get one with the VR (Vibration Reduction, Nikon) or the IS (Image Stabilization, Canon) to help you get good shots in the low light tough shooting conditions.

Question : I need a Vista driver for a panasonic digital video camera.?
My video camera is not windows compatible. I can't find a driver anywhere on the internet (including the Panasonic site) to fix this problem. Panasonic model NV GS27E. Will using a firewall cable help the computer recognize it and resolve my problem?

Answer:
You theoretically don't need a driver for Firewire with Vista but MANY people seem to be having trouble. Seems like Firewire in Vista is broken. Gotta love Microsoft. But, yeah, you need Firewire.

The Panasonic line is a sleeper. Panasonic is the provider for the Leica companies digital cameras. In fact a lot of the point and shoot cameras made by Panasonic sport Leica lenses. Other than the Leica logo on their cameras, Leitz has added their electronic processing to their version of the cameras
