Fantastic entry level camera

I was looking for a cheap point and shoot for taking pics for Ebay. I'm a camera noob and wanted a camera that could do what a point and shoot should. I wanted to take it out of the box and snap pics. I started witha Sony DSC S700. I was extremely dissapointed. That camera has no image stabilizer. Unless you have surgeons hands, don't bother. This Panasonic does have an image stabilizer. The quality of pics it takes beats the Sony's hands down. You do need to read the manual. This camera has a boat-load of features. THere's multiple scene modes such as candlelight, beach, snow, sports etc. There's a macro mode for close-up shots. It has a movie mode for short filming. The Sony's shutter button required too much effort, and caused camera movement, the Panasonic's does not. Press half-way to focus, and full to snap. There's a high angle mode. That makes it easier to see the large lcd screen when holding the camera above your head. Zooming in and out is easy with a separate button on the top of the camera. When shooting, an icon tells you if your hand is moving to much, so you can attempt to stabilize the shot. The image stabilizer works well. You can navigate easily thru the menus. When turning the jog dial, the lcd screen indicates what mode your in. The camera takes fairly good low-light pics. There is some graininess, but it's not too bad. You will want to spend more if you plan to take a lot of night-shots tho. The onboard photo-editing is limited. Red-eye removal, crop, rotate and that's about it. There's a shooting mode that eliminates red-eye by pausing the shutter after the flash goes off. It works very well. The included software is very basic, serious photographers will want 3rd party software. There's Intelligent ISO(in shutter opening) mode which will automatically enable or disable the flash based on ambient light. Very handy! If the flash causes glare, you can force it off easily. There's a wealth of info on the lcd screen. There's a pictograph of incoming light to help you avoid glare, etc. Indicators for OIS on, # of shots on the memory card etc. I paid $90 for this camera. For that kind of money, it's a screaming bargain. On the Sony, you have to go to nearly $200 to get an image stabilizer. The OIS on this camera is indespensible. I love this camera, an recommend it highly to anyone wanting a budget model. That being said, this isn't a professional camera, so if that's what you want look elsewhere.

Good while it lasted

Used for about 16 months as a compact 2nd camera. Took about 1000 pics altogether. Although I treated camera w/ respect, the auto focus stopped working any time the optical zoom setting is anything less than 50% of range (most shots). Pics come out very blury. I dont know if this is a common or unusual failure mode for this camera.

The video mode never worked very well - colors were way off and NO SOUND. Even very cheap cameras come w/ microphones - this one doesn't and that IMO is a design flaw.

It sadens me that this camera will now start its 10,000 year decomposition in a landfill.

Good camera for the price.

I had read all the previous reviews on this product that I could find before buying it. Every other review I read was right on the money. This is a great camera for the price. It's quick to start and move from picture to picture, very easy to use and has a lot of features if you like features to play with. The only problem this camera has is that the flash is a little too bright for close use. When the flash goes off the picture washes out. Other than that for outdoor use which is primarily why I bought it, the pictures are beautiful.

Have not even tried the camera, yet. I am disgusted that the movie mode has no audio. What the hell were they thinking??

Problems

I have had this camera for a year. For at least 6 months now, it has had a white spot that randomly shows up somewhere in most pictures. Now about 1 1/2 to 2 months ago it just became blurry. I didn't drop it and didn't change any settings from how I normally use it. Most all of the pictures are blurry now, once in a while one will look okay. I have tried a lot of different things and ready the manual and nothing has helped. Since it would cost less to get a new one then have it checked out, I'm buying a new one. I am actually buying another Panasonic, a TZ3, which has good reviews and ratings. I like to think that I just got a lemon and this new one will be fine.

Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. Not everyone has hands of stone when taking pictures-that's why Panasonic digital cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The cameras have a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working - all you'll see are the outstanding results!

Great camera, but no sound for video recording

I really love the quality of the photos. It's really easy to use. The only thing I don't like is that it has no sound (speaker) when you use the video feature. I have all my videos with no sound.
Other than that it's a good camera.

Amazon Cancelled the order

Never got a shipping confirmation, so we emailed Amazon. About 3 hours after we got an email that said "rest assured your order shipped on July 31st" we got a second email that said they couldn't find this product anywhere so they were canceling the order. We were counting on getting this camera before we went on vacation.

I gave this 3 stars because I'm sure the camera is great, but the service was bad.

Fuzzy and dark pictures

I have tried all the settings but my pictures are fuzzy and dark. I know how to use a camera, but my Kodak EasyShare that I had before (eventually broke after 2 1/2 years, which is normal for a digital camera) took crystal clear pictures with the correct light.

Took this on my trip to Greece and wish I had just bought another EasyShare.

As soon as I got the camera I could tell it was a good one by the instruction manual. I'm still reading and learning how to us it. My husband and I enjoy trying out the different features and we'er pleased with the pictures we've taken. We highly recommend this camera to both a novis and the more experience photographer.

Low price, great prestations.

I bought this camera as a birthday present. I was looking for a simple to use camera, so I pointed towards Kodak but found nothing to suit my taste. So I decided to try on Panasonic, and now I'm glad I did.

First of all, the camera is easy to use. Mostly point and shoot. However, if you have special needs, the special settings are very helpful. It has a long time exposure setting that allowed me to a picture a lightning scenery with high detail . However, a tripod is a must if you want to enjoy this feature.

Batteries? I used the Oxyride batteries that came included. Used them to set the camera up, fool around a little and take about 150 pictures and maybe 20 minutes of video without flash. At least, it is not a battery eater when used with the oxyride batts.

More goodies: of course. The camera is quick to start up, pictures easy to review and manipulate and the stabilization system really does work. Also, you can take this camera out of the bag and start using it without even looking at the instructions manual. However, I recommend reading it to fully understand some functions.

The down side? Well, I have to say this: the videos are only recorded in QVGA (320 x 240) and they will have no sound.

Great little camera for the price - wish I'd found it sooner!

This is my third digital camera. My first one (an Olympus D-340R) still works even if it's a "dinosaur" when compared to today's digital cameras. But I can no longer connect it to my computer (cable causes computer to reboot) and because it is so old I wanted to replace it ... or at least augment it with something newer. I also had an old Sony handicam. It also still works but... again.. it's old.. wanted something with newer technology. Last year I thought I had replaced both by buying a Samsung SC-D365, but I discovered that it doesn't have a flash and even in the brightest indoor light the still pictures were too dark. I wanted something on a par with my old Olympus, but didn't want to spend a lot of money since I'd already sunk quite a bit into the Samsung (which, btw takes okay outdoor pics/films). I started looking for something around $100.00 and finally stumbled on the Panasonic DMC-LS2. I read all the other owner reviews and was happy to see the majority gave it high marks. It sounded like just what I was looking for. What also helped at the time I bought it the price was just slightly over my $100 "looking range" ($130) and to sweeten the deal at that time, Amazon was also giving away 2 free memory cards to go with it. So, I've had it about a week and have been trying it out (and reading the manual). I was pleased to see that it was everything everyone's been saying and then some. I took a few pictures using just the camera's internal memory and was amazed at how clear and sharp they were. Took some really close up shots of one of my cats and could actually see each individual hair. Amazing that this little mid-range camera can take such clear shots. Of course, as I familiarize myself with it over time I will learn more about it's strengths (and weaknesses, if any), but so far it's exactly what I was looking for and I'm quite happy I found it.

Don't ever lose the proprietary data cable for this camera

This camera takes great pictures and is very compact and portable. I've loved having it, but it has one glaring flaw which is the proprietary data cable. If you lose it, there is no universal cable you can use to transfer your pictures to your computer. You have to buy a very specific replacement cable. Not being able to get my pictures off my own camera has rendered it nearly pointless.

Great for Daylight and Outdoor photos

WARNINGS about this Panasonic camera

I'm sort of relieved that my Lumix FX-01 is at Panasonic after I refused to pay $111 to have them fix my lens, which bent to the side.

How did it bend to the side?
See that on/off switch on the top of the camera? The entire time I had the camera it would turn on by itself since it's very easy to hit by accident. Apparently this happened somehow in my pocket and the lens bent and stuck.

When I pointed out to customer service that no other camera has a switch that extends like that - and seemingly for a very good reason - they were not moved.

On another note this camera is HORRIBLE in low light photography. Additionally the colors and photos were always kind of harsh without the nuance and "wysiwyg" quality I got with my old Canon point and shoot.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a Canon instead of this. The main reason I got this Lumix was a 28mm lens, but that wasn't worth it -- especially after my bad experience with their product design.

Good choice

I've had this camera for about a year now. I've taken thousands of shots and it has preformed without missing a beat. What I still love most about this camera is it's small size, quick start up and amazingly long battery life. What I like least is the picture quality. It's fine for shots that don't require a great level of detail but use it for something close up or zoom in on a picture you've taken and you'll notice a great deal of "noise" in the image. I'm still happy using it but I know there is better out there. When this one dies I will probably get a Canon based on the several positive reviews I read about that make.

broken re-furbished camera

This vendor sold me a broken, re-furbished camera. On the first day of my trip to Brazil my camera broke. I didn`t drop it or bang it against anything, I used it normally, took some photos that afternoon. I noticed that the camera was draining my batteries (from a previous version of this camera) much faster than normal. I tried turning on my camera the next day and it didn`t work. I tried recharging the batteries again and nothing. Its a shame, because I had a previous version of this Panasonic Luminix camera and they are great cameras`... and of course it also almost ruined my trip to south america as i had to buy another camera from Sony Brasil that isn`t that great in quality (errors on some of the images I took)

Editorial Review :

Featuring a 5-megapixel CCD sensor, the DMC-FZ20K delivers a wide range of detail and color with images up to 2560 x 1920 pixels--enough information to make photo-quality prints up to 13 by 17 inches. Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 12x zoom lens, with 3 aspheric elements, combines comfortably small size with superb image rendering. By combining with a 4x digital zoom, users will have an equivalence of a 48x zoom lens in a very compact body, though users should note that digital zoom degrades picture quality.

Movie Mode and Audio
The DMC-FZ20K lets you shoot QuickTime Motion JPEG video at resolutions up to 320 x 240 pixels with sound. The amount of video you can capture is limited by space on the memory card; you'll fit more at low quality (10 frames-per-second) than at high quality (30 frames-per-second). The movies aren't camcorder quality, but they're fun and convenient, and they're perfect as e-mail attachments. You can also record audio comments, up to five seconds in length, for your still pictures.

More Features

  • Flip Animation: Allows you to create your own frame-by-frame animations.
  • Unlimited Consecutive Shooting: Allows consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the SD memory card.
  • Two-inch diagonal polycrystalline TFT LCD display (130k pixels)
  • Hot shoe for external flash attachment
  • Mega Burst Shooting Mode: Shoot up to seven images at three or two frames-per-second in standard resolution, or up to four images in fine resolution. This option is designed to provide you with the best selection of photos during action, such as a sporting event.

Storage and Transfer
Images and video are stored on Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. A 16 MB SD card is included. Files can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Printing
This camera supports the PictBridge standard. PictBridge is a technology that lets you transfer pictures from a digital camera to a compatible printer, without a PC or image-editing software. Because PictBridge is an industry standard, users can connect PictBridge-compatible devices made by many different manufacturers. Learn more about PictBridge.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by lithium-ion battery pack (included with charger). It measures 3.43 by 5.02 by 4.18 inches and weighs 1.14 pounds.

What's in the Box
DMC-FZ20K digital camera, battery charger, battery pack, 16MB SD memory card, lens cap, lens hood with adaptor, A/V and USB cables, strap, and CD-ROM

Customer Review :

It's all about the pictures

I got the FZ20 when it first came out. It was an addition to several other digital and film cameras that I own.

Having been a semi-pro photographer for years, we have to realize that different people look for different things in a camera. That's one reason why I have a lot of cameras.

However, if size is not a factor but I still can't carry a complete camera bag with interchangeable lenses, then my go-to camera is the FZ20. Why? Well, if I am shooting in low light, the results with either a Sunpak 422D or Metz 60CT is great. Also, in normal situations where the onboard flash will work or in available light situations within the range of the camera, the lens on this hummer will catch shots that I would otherwise not get. The incredible zoom range, quality within the range and 2.8 aperture are an incredible combination. Think about it. And while it is 5 MP, because of the broad zoom range, there is far less need to crop a photo later on, losing resolution. With the FZ20 one has far greater flexibility in framing and cropping the photo in the camera, using the lens. The results are pretty stunning

The camera has been very reliable over the years, taken lots of bumps and bruises, and just doesn't quit. No problems whatsoever. Destined to become a classic, I think.

The internal battery is pretty good, and I always carry a spare, but I use external batteries with this to help keep me going during a shoot.

CONS, well there are a few. Not the best for video display of shots taken at extremely low light, but print results look good.

Some people have complained about the viewfinder and screen, I find that they work perfectly well for me, and would not have wanted to buy the camera at a higher cost for something better than it has.

This is another common complaint that I read about... and that is image quality of cameras. Too often the image quality will vary depending on whether the photo is being displayed on a computer screen or printed. And if it's printed, the printer and paper used. When printing either at a lab or on my dye sub printer, I have never had a bad photo with this camera, except for, say, user error.

OTOH, photos taken with my non-Lumix cameras tend to look flat and uninspiring by comparison. There is something about the Leica lenses that makes people really flip out over the Lumix shots.

Also, the location of the SD card is in the BOTTOM of the camera, which is a drag when using a tripod. You have to unscrew the camera from the tripod base to get to the card. Max card capacity is 2GB. Which is generally enough. Why they didn't mount the card in the side of the camera is a mystery.

Rating :

Oldie but goodie

At 5 megapixels this camera is somewhat outdated, yet with owning newer and supposedly better cameras I still grab this one most often. The lens is stunning, fast and clear with an amazing zoom ratio. I got this camera when I was fascinated with photographing ducks. The 430mm equivalent zoom is perfect for bird photography. Compared to an SLR with equivalent length of zoom it's so light and easy to handle. And with a 36mm equivalent wide angle it replaces an entire kit of lenses. And with a 2.8 aperture it's remarkably fast for such a zoom.

My biggest complaint is that the with a minimum aperture of F8 I can't get quite the depth of field that I'd sometimes like. Some other features are a bit dated, too. Maximum movie size is 320 x 240 pixels. The USB connector is only the slower version 1. But since I don't like hauling multiple lenses around (or changing them in bad weather) and don't really use this as a movie camera, it's still the camera that goes on hikes with me. If you can find a used one at a good price don't worry about the 5 MP limit. The few photos that I've needed to print at a large size, I've taken to a print shop that does giclee printing. I have a stunning 16" x 20" shot of a red tailed hawk that's as fine as any of my 35mm prints. The printing was pricey but considering the framing and mounting costs the $15 printing cost was trivial.

No long exposure capability

I've had this camera for a few years now and love it, BUT I have discovered that I cannot do long exposures needed for most night photography.

The maximum built-in exposure time is 8 seconds, far too little for most night photography. It's a great camera if you don't want to do time exposures but a big disappointment if you do.

superb camera

I bought this camera used for $99. What a bargain!! It takes fabulous pictures! I downloaded pictures I took at Niagra Falls and use them as my screen saver and I can't believe I took those pictures. They look like they were taken by a professional! I still have a lot to learn on this camera but so far the pictures are stunning. I can't imagine what kind of pictures I'll be able to take when I learn more about the camera.

The only one tiny problem I have is where they put the digital view finder. When I look through it my nose touches the LCD screen. But other than that I love this camera. What a great find!!!

Question : Whats better a Nikon or Panasonic digital camera?
Trying to buy a new camera, im looking at a Nikon and a Panasonic, which one should i get?

Answer:
Look at Nikon, or Canon My preference in the larger DSLR's are the Nikon's (of course!) Canon makes good stuff too, but I prefer the "ergonomics" or layout on the Nikon. In the smaller Point n shooters, Canon may have the slight edge. Both cameras are good, but Canon gives a larger selection of cameras with an "optical viewfinder" which I prefer in the bright sunlight. Those LCD viewfinders can be hard to see in bright sunlight. Make sure you get one with the VR (Vibration Reduction, Nikon) or the IS (Image Stabilization, Canon) to help you get good shots in the low light tough shooting conditions.

Question : Lens rattle with new panasonic digital camera?
Hi, I just got a new Panasonic FZ18. I noticed that there is a rattle coming from the lens when I tip or handle the camera. Just wondered if this is common in this model??

Answer:
This may be normal. There is a loose element in the lens that, when in use, compensates for hand movement when using the optical image stabilization. Try turning the stabilizer on using Mode 2 and see if you hear the rattling under the same conditions. Mode 2 is continuous stabilization whereas Mode 1 is on-shot, I believe. Try Mode 1 also if you still hear rattling just in case.

Question : Panasonic digital camera does video in QuickTime format; can I change it to Windows Media?
Panasonic digital camera does video in QuickTime format; can I change it to Windows Media?

Answer:
The easiest solution for converting QuickTime MOV files to a Windows Media compatible format is RAD Video Tools. You can covert the file to AVI with this app and then edit the AVI or use your video in any other application. Here's a tutorial on converting MOV files with RAD Video Tools: http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051003_convert_mov_to_avi.html

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 digital camera and I was wondering how I can resize my videos I have taken on it for websites.. Most sites only alllow 100mb and most of my videos are well over that. Is there a site that can help our do I need a special program for video resizing? Thank you in advance...

You really have to decide what resolution you need before you shoot. Or you can edit out the boring parts and make the image file less than 100mb

Question : Canon vs. panasonic digital camera?
I have an canon camera now (a elph), it's a few years old and I would like to upgrade. I'm not an expert photographer but I would like to start taking some nice pictures of wildlife. For this I am looking for a camera with somewhere around 10x optical zoom. Canon has one, but I have read you have to wait around 10 seconds between taking pictures when you use the flash. I don't like that. Plus it is a little bigger than your typical small digital camera. I saw panasonic has a camera with 10x optical zoom and it is smaller. It received some really good reviews on the circuit city website. I have never heard much about a panasonic camera, are they good? Do they take good pictures? I have always had a canon and been in love with it, but they just dont seem to have a good canon camera for what I'm looking for (10x optical zoom). Can anyone give me their opinions on these types of cameras or possibly other brands of cameras that have good optical zoom capabilities? Thanks! :) I still want a smaller "point and shoot" camera. That is why I am not looking at SLR cameras. I want the best of both worlds. :)

Answer:
Canon is the better camera as far as i know. It is one of the best in general. http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/canon_ratings.html Go with the camera that is calling to you if theyre said to be the same.
