Simply set the 8.1-megapixel DMC-FS3 to iA mode and let the four Intelligent Auto functions team up to help prevent shooting errors. Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the focus and exposure settings. The 33mm Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with 3x optical zoom takes wider shots than an ordinary 35mm lens. This is helpful in small rooms or crowded places, for example, letting you fit more people into a group photo. There's also an Easy Zoom button on the camera top - just press it, and the optical zoom and Extra Optical Zoom instantly extend to full telescopic position. This quick zooming lets you catch even fleeting opportunities. The brightness and contrast of the large 2.5" diagonal LCD adjust automatically in 10 steps as ambient light conditions change, so images are clear, bright and easy to see day or night, indoors or outdoors. f=5.5-16.5mm (35mm Equiv. - 33-100mm) Focal Length 2.5 Diagonal Polycrystalline TFT LCD Display (230K dots) Focusing Area Normal - 50cm - infinity, Macro / Intelligent AUTO - Wide 5cm / Tele 30cm - infinity 8 - 1/2,000 sec. won't miss a bit. EVER!

i was skeptical at first. i was not sure about panasonic making picture cameras. and the price was incredibly low for the amount of megapixels. i took some pictures of moving objects in very low light, and the automatic settings fixed the image. so, it would always be in focus. the flash never burns the skin's color as well. the video is great. though it does not have 720p. the aperture is somewhat greater than i thought. i took some close-ups outside and compared it with my slr. the depth of field very eminent. i am loving the face detection on this camera too. way faster than my Kodak 1253, and more accurate. the size and its simplicity of use makes it great for those who travel light. also the quality and speed is a plus. great for low light situation (even if you do not want to use the flash). it is a great camera but not a toy. give to you older children and get them introduced to Photography.

ps.
battery life is outstanding.

AMAZING!!

My previous camera was a Kodak. Everything about the camera was horrible, so I began begging my Mom to get me a camera for Christmas. Well, she did, and the camera she got me (Panasonic DMC FS3) is absolutely amazing. Unlike the Kodak, this camera is very fast and has great battery life. The zoom is wonderful and the size is great. I couldn't have asked for a better camera. Panasonic is the way to go!

Little Love

I'm not one who needs to review things, but this camera is special. I have used many digital cameras over many years, each improved over the last model as technology improves and becomes more afordable. Having purchased the FZ18 I noticed the FX30 very is similar in menu and features which I have grown to like on the FZ. There are trade offs with the tiny cameras of optical quality(CCD size)and zoom. Looking at most all others they have similar limitations needing enough light to keep the noise down. Some have much worse quality issues, like so called "digital image stabilization" that automatically lower quality with increased noise to useless levels. The thing I wanted to share is this camera grows on you. I cannot leave it home or often worry it might loose it down the couch or worse! It is cute and needs TLC and just happens to take great pictures too!

Great camera, small and good quality

I bought this camera when it first came out last year. It's been great - photos are good. Photos with flash (i.e. in the dark) could be of better quality - certainly not the daylight quality, but I'm happy nonetheless.

The camera is not incredibly light, but it is small and is reasonably good-looking. Easy to use and takes great photos in sunlight.

Likeable, but ultimately flawed

I gave it three stars because it falls short in one critical area - photo quality.

But first, the good stuff. Like an earlier review noted, the black rubberized finish feels good in hand. The "Intelligent Auto" mode works reasonably well - it was able to distinguish between macro, landscape, portrait and night modes most of the time. The wide angle lens really came in handy for group photos, landscape and architecture shots. Normal operation is fairly snappy, and the menu are easy to figure out. Lastly, the LCD screen's resolution is fairly high, and the gain can be adjusted with one button to aid viewing in bright environments.

However, the photo quality was underwhelming. I've owned a Canon Powershot S410 and Fuji Finepix F20 (both pocket-sized Point & Shoot cameras) and the photo quality in those cameras were superior to the Panasonic. Panasonic cameras have had the reputation of great lenses with mediocre noise reduction, and that's what I expected with this camera. However, the photos are very soft and the colors lack saturation. The noise reduction is noticeable at ISO 200, and is very apparent at ISO 400. This level of noise reduction is not unusual for this class of camera, though I prefer the Canon approach of more detail but more noise.

The camera also has an "Intelligent ISO" mode, which boosts the ISO if shaking or motion is detected in the frame. It sounds good, but it's very aggressive, and the resulting photos are usually shot at fairly high ISO where the detail is lost. There is a option to limit the highest ISO, though the option is not available in "Intelligent Auto" mode.

I haven't printed any photos from this camera, though I would suspect that regular sized prints would be fine. You can usually tell the difference in quality by zooming into a photo, but in this case, I was able to tell the difference even when shrinking the photos to fit in a web album.

It's not a bad camera. I actually enjoyed using it, but at the end of the day, when you sit down and look over the photos you took, that's where the camera underwhelms.

Found a 10 Mega pixels at same price

I bought this camera for my daughter and she found it a week later in Best Buy for the same price but 10 megapixels. What a deal!! But the camera itself is great.

great point and shoot

I had the 5 megapixel version of this camera and it was great. When I lost that camera I knew that there was no other point and shoot that I would want to own. The image stabilizer is phenomenal for an amature photographer and it's 100 times better than the kodak cameras that I've owned. I won't buy any other camera for everyday use.

Editorial Review :

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FZ8 digital camera features a powerful 12x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-432mm on a 35mm film camera) with f/2.8 brightness. While the DMC-FZ8 boasts the same high 12x zooming power, it also enhances mobility with its compactness and easy joystick operation. The Venus Engine III image processing engine gives it even higher image quality and speedier processing. The FZ8 also incorporates the Intelligent Image Stabilization system, which Panasonic is including in other Lumix cameras being introduced simultaneously with the FZ8.Effective resolution has been increased to 7.2 megapixels, which supports the FZ8's enhanced functions. For example, Panasonic's Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification - to 18x when taking photos with 3-megapixel resolution. The resolution of the LCD has also been increased to 207, 000 pixels, and the larger, 0.44-inch EVF (electronic viewfinder) has a resolution of 188, 000 pixels, making it easy to see both when monitoring and playing back images.Other features that improve usability and convenience include enhanced operation with a multi-purpose joystick, which further simplifies exposure compensation. Frequently used functions, such as light metering, AF (auto focus) mode, ISO setting, and white balance adjustment, are quickly and easily handled with the Quick Setting function. The position of the AF area can be selected among the 11 positions in the single point mode, the multi-point mode and the spot mode. When manually focusing, the focus area is automatically magnified and movable for greater control. White balance can be adjusted on two axes to better express the photographer's intended coloring.

Fantastic Photos w/ease of use

Panasonic does not get the hoopla like Canon and some other big name brands,
but it is simply a beautiful camera!
I can't say enough good things about it.
I had a 3mp Panasonic for a few years until I got this one a year ago.
I have taken thousands of photos, it is simply a class act camera.
I recommend Panasonic to all of my friends who are thinking of
buying a new digital camera. Obviously is it not an SLR camera
but it might as well be one! The 12x optical is great! The image
stabilizer is super.

Great camera

We needed a camera to replace our Kodak C743 that my wife carries in her purse. We use a Digital SLR most of the time, but we like to have one with us for those times we "wish we had a camera".
Anyway, here are some good points about this camera. Put it on the simple mode and you get great pics. Some pics have some red-eye, but it is probably one of the better compact cameras on handling red-eye. Its very durable and easy to use. We recently came back from a vacation on took almost 1400 pictures with this camera. All with the flash and the battery held up well.
The only real bad point I have on this camera is the size. Its kind of bulky for a "compact" camera, but overall I would recommend it as a buy.

Quality camera

Pros: Image quality, features and UI, price, optical zoom, weight.

Cons: Larger than expected, not great for wide angle (or indoor, low light stuff).

Thoughts: You can't beat the price. I researched for quite a while before buying this camera and I choose right; I would buy it again. It's just right for what I wanted to use it for: outdoor landscape pictures and long range. Not really interested in indoor photography. (The long shutter setting is great for night shots, as long as you have a tripod.)

Love it

Gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas last year and he absolutely loves it. Works fantastic! You really have to learn how to use all the features and it might take a while if your not a techno geek, but once you get it down you are gonna love this camera. Get a 4g chip for it and you'll probably never need another one. Very easy to install and transfer to your computer so you can burn discs or just print. Highly recommend!!

Fantastic bargain

My wife and I purchased the FZ8S ahead of our honeymoon. The camera was extremely easy to learn, and provides excellent image quality and zoom capability. It's more featured than a basic pocket camera, but doesn't go to town like a DSLR. For people (like me) who are above novice but still well below professional when it comes to picture taking, the FZ8 is simply a fantastic buy.

Yes, at high ISO/low-light levels and deep zoom levels it tends to produce fairly noisy images. To this I say, "Well, it's still only 250 bucks". So there are some sacrifices one must give for the price.

Still and all, it's a great buy for the budget shooter.

Great Camera and Features - small package!!

This camera has proven to be far better than I could have ever hoped!! I purchased this camera after my previous point-shoot style camera was damaged while sandbagging a levee in Iowa...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55P was ordered as a hurried replacement before I left on a trip. The camera has excellent lense quality and an outstanding array of features. I really appreciated that the menus and functioning are pretty intuitive if you have experience using cameras. I've mostly worked with Canon products previously and still like that gear very much. Even though I had not used a Panasonic before, locating features was easy and intuitive. I purchased this unit instead of the Canon because the Panasonic is a smaller, flatter camera that offers all of the same features that I wanted for much less money.

Simply put, I have not used a small camera which produced such high quality photos and offered such great flexibility of use. The flash is powerful and offers several settings. I've used the camera in a variety of situations ranging from concerts, over dinner, by a campfire, macro photos of bugs, and in the dead of night. All situations resulted in outstanding photos. The battery life has been very good. The wide angle is VERY useful. I just returned from 6 days of camping using the camera every day (not constantly) and never needed a charge.

I simply can't think of anything else I would like in such a camera. A great purchase that I could recommend to anyone.

Great snapshot camera

Excellent small, convenient snapshot camera. All of the controls are really easy to use and in the right positions. The picture quality is outstanding and there is plenty of control over the size of the files. The only drawback that I found is that it does not have a fully manual setting for the exposure and the longest exposure setting appears to be about 1 sec. I am sure that I won't need these settings too often. Overall an excellent purchase. I would recommend it.

Wonderful little camera

Panasonic DMC-FX07R 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Red)
I have own this fabulous little camera for over a year now and I just love how well all of my pictures have turned out. I read in some other reviews how it doesn't seem to do well when it comes to places with limited light. I beg to differ...in Feb. 2008, I went to the rodeo to enjoy the show and and concert. For those of you who have gone before to a concert at the rodeo, you know just how much light is displayed and usually if you try to pictures and/ or record it, the quality is very poor. However, with this little camera, not only were my pictures clear and well-lit, the two video clips I did at the concert came out awesome! I just couldn't believe how clear the bnd looked from where I was sitting and later when I uploaded it to my computer, you could clearly hear all the words of the song being sung. This had been my first time using this option and I just wish I had started using it sooner.

So for those of you who are interested in purchasing this camera, you will not regret it. For being such a tiny camera, the outcomes of pictures and video will leave you pleased.

Really a 5 megapixel camera, no matter what it says...

I know that almost every critical review on this camera talks about the noise. I don't have a FX07 myself, but my boss has one that I used for office work after my Canon A85's CCD crapped out after 3 years of rigorous service.

There is normal noise and then there is FX07 noise. Normal noise (at low ISO anyway) is manageable - throw image into Noise Ninja noise reduction program, Auto-Profile, set Chrominance filtering to Max, fiddle around with Luminance filtering, process, save. Rinse and repeat.

At low ISOs, the FX07's noise is coarse and non-uniform. Which blows the Auto-Profiling - the Luma and Chroma noise level readings come out low - the noise is too coarse to be recognized. Even with maximum filtering in Chroma and Luma, you see lots of huge individual noise specks. So you run up the "Smoothness" to squelch them (like the program recommends) and lose half the detail in an photo. That's at ISO 100.

At higher ISOs, say oh 200 or 400, the noise is even coarser and more uniform. Luma and Chroma estimates remains low (for the ISOs), but the noise covers up the image in huge coarse grains. Any attempt to recover detail from said grains is futile. The image details don't just turn "plasticy", they are obliterated.

Results at ISO800 or 1250 are unusable, but since that's true of even a Powershot G9 I guess I shouldn't complain about that - it's the poor low-ISO results that are the killer.

After some painful lessons, I came to the conclusion that this is at best a 5MP camera (even at low ISO), not a 7MP. By admitting this fact and setting your camera to 5MP, the noise grains become small enough that Noise Ninja actually recognizes them as noise (the measured noise levels actually rise) and you can squelch them without destroying the image. If the image was taken in 7MP, the only real chance for usability is to scale it to 50% - that is turning it into a ~1.8MP image before putting it into Noise Ninja (Noise Ninja NR is theoretically done before downsizing but theory obviously did not factor in the Lumix FX07).

On the positive, it is a OK 2-5MP camera. It is small, colors are good, optical stabilizer works - just read the 4/5 star reviews. But do you want to pay the listed price for a 5MP (at best) camera? As for me, after 4 months of the above torture I went to buy a Canon G9 camera for use at work and home.

Rating :

over-rated

I must say this camera has been a huge disappointment. The noise is terrible as has already been mentioned. Ease of use is very simple though. I'm going to have to save this for just video. Does a decent job of that. I bought it because the wide angle is a very nice a feature & when I was looking at point & shoots a year a so ago there wasn't a whole lot out there. That has changed a bit.

If picture quality doesn't matter to you, than go ahead & buy this camera.

Not as good as a sony (or is it?)

When I got this I took a series of pictures inside with flash/no flash and compared to my old sony cybershot P150.

When I looked at images on camera screens I was suprised. The sony's looked better when I zoomed it in. Sharper, less noise.

However when I uploaded them to PC I found sony's may have less noise and were slightly better with flash. But without flash the Fx07 was the best. All shots in focus and sony's were blurry. Image stabilisation is great for when you can't use a flash inside.

Also, after experimenting with a few settings (switch slow shutter speed to 1/4 or 1/2 (not 1/8) and images were no longer dark in low light. Better still is intelligent ISO which does all this for you. Most of the time it will pick something sensible that results in a reasonably quick shutter speed to prevent shake and acceptable ISO so not too much noise. Hint avoid ISO 800/1250 if possible. Photo's are very noisy at these settings. 400 is OK, 200 better, 100 brilliant but only really can be used outside.

Seems good so far, gonna have to take it somewhere nice and try it outside.

Bad faulty camera - Many reported problems

All of a sudden, this camera turns on, but no buttons work. If you search on google you will find that several have reported this issue. Panasonic must recall this model. I'm never buying a panasonic again. The picture quality, like many reported are very dark and makes everyone look oily ... THE WORST DIGITAL CAMERA I HAVE EVER OWNED. The only reason I got this was because I could put the SD card directly into my panasonic TV. What a bad mistake. I should have just stuck with Sony cybershots which gave great pictures and lasted atleast 3 yrs.

Panasonic charges $650 and I saw it onlikne ordering for $200 less? are these online companies reliable? I heard of one in NYC that is less and no taxes for me in Florida.

Answer:

Question : Canon vs. panasonic digital camera?
I have an canon camera now (a elph), it's a few years old and I would like to upgrade. I'm not an expert photographer but I would like to start taking some nice pictures of wildlife. For this I am looking for a camera with somewhere around 10x optical zoom. Canon has one, but I have read you have to wait around 10 seconds between taking pictures when you use the flash. I don't like that. Plus it is a little bigger than your typical small digital camera. I saw panasonic has a camera with 10x optical zoom and it is smaller. It received some really good reviews on the circuit city website. I have never heard much about a panasonic camera, are they good? Do they take good pictures? I have always had a canon and been in love with it, but they just dont seem to have a good canon camera for what I'm looking for (10x optical zoom). Can anyone give me their opinions on these types of cameras or possibly other brands of cameras that have good optical zoom capabilities? Thanks! :) I still want a smaller "point and shoot" camera. That is why I am not looking at SLR cameras. I want the best of both worlds. :)

Answer:
Canon is the better camera as far as i know. It is one of the best in general. http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/canon_ratings.html Go with the camera that is calling to you if theyre said to be the same.

Question : I need a Vista driver for a panasonic digital video camera.?
My video camera is not windows compatible. I can't find a driver anywhere on the internet (including the Panasonic site) to fix this problem. Panasonic model NV GS27E. Will using a firewall cable help the computer recognize it and resolve my problem?

Answer:
You theoretically don't need a driver for Firewire with Vista but MANY people seem to be having trouble. Seems like Firewire in Vista is broken. Gotta love Microsoft. But, yeah, you need Firewire.

Question : Does anyone know anything bad about the $300 Panasonic Digital Camera?
My husband just bought one, but has not tried it out yet. I liked the Kokak or better name brand, is Panasonic a goodd name in the digital camera department? Thanks. It is a FZ7, thanks.

Answer:
Which model? I've had an FZ1 for over two years and it has been great. The image stabilization and the 12x optical zoom work well together. I've even had some pictures taken with the camera accepted on one of the stock photography sites.
