Not a camera for a serious photographer
I was on vacation about a year ago and slammed my digital camera in the car door. I was in the middle of Utah and my options were limited, so I bought the D425 as a quick replacement. I have to say that the photos I took with it were spectacular, mostly of landscapes and geological formations in bright sunlight. Since then I have been very disappointed with the performance of the camera. The shutter delay is horrible and I usually end up with pictures of my friends with distorted faces because they ask "whats taking so long" when the camera finally records the image. There are no bells and whistles on this camera and the overall performance is okay for a rookie but could sometimes be frustrating. My wife was so frustrated I had to buy another camera for her to use.

Been through a lot together... and Still loving this camera!
I bought this camera with my first student loan. It was a lot more then! I absolutely love it still. It takes AMAZING pictures. I have several prints from pictures that I've taken on my walls as posters.
What I like about it: This camera takes great night shots. All you have to do is hold it steady. I have some amazing pictures of the beach under the full moon. Since I first saw this sight I wished that I had a camera that would capture it. I have dropped this camera down a mountain (Literally. Broken Top Mountain in Oregon.) and it survived! It also survived an ice storm, some glissading, and white water rafting that trip alone. Other than that I've taken this camera spelunking, hiking, coast to coast, weddings, work, sporting events, and photos for non-profit organizations. This camera is perfect for all occasions. I'm a college student (still) and this camera has made it through my drunken friends taking pictures, dropping it in beer, being in my HUGE purse and my backpack. I've wrecked my bike and landed on it... it's been through a lot. It looks like it wouldn't work, but it works like the day I bought it!
The only downside to this camera is I take pictures on the largest resolution there is. This makes the shutter a little slower so I don't always catch the perfect moment, but I'm still 99% satisfied!

great camera!
This was my first digital camera and let me tell you, it's a great beginner's camera. I had it for 3-4 years now and still works great! Lighting could be a problem in some cases, but other than that, it works perfectly fine especially since it doesn't have as many megapixels as other camera. It's easy to use, and I would def. recommended it.

Disappointed
I bought this camera for my 16 yr old daughter for Christmas. I wanted a basic camera for her first digital. Unless you are only a few feet away from the subject, the pictures come out very blurry. My older son and I both have the Olympus Camedia D545 camera. I was so impressed with that camera, I thought one step down would be the way to go. The Olympus seems to be a great brand, and has a great software program with it. I'm not at all pleased with the D-425, and am going to try to exchange it.

Still love this camera after many years of use.
If you are looking for a high quality, low cost camera that offers a wide range of features then I highly recommend this to anyone considering it. This is the first and only digital camera I have owned and I've had it for approximately 4 or 5 years. I orginally purchased this camera to take to pro baseball games because of the 10x zoom lens, which is still close to the best today. I was pleasantly surprised, once I learned the features of the camera, that it takes exceptional close-ups as well. (The portrait setting is one of my favorites, but you should read how to properly apply the feature before using it.) Even with the low 2.1 megapixels, by today's standards, the pictures are very clear when blown up to an 8x10. The only couple of downsides I would mention are the lack of image stabilization and the lag time between shots. While most newer cameras now offer image stabilization, if you have a fairly steady hand or a tripod it won't be too big of a deal. As for the lag time, any digital camera is going to be slightly sluggish compared to 35mm. I would still buy this camera again.

Great Camera but memory cards are absolete
I love my camera but left the memory card in an in store photo developing kiosk. Now I can't find one for it anywhere. I'm very bummed but will continue looking. So if you buy this camera used make sure you get a memory card with it.

Still enjoy it!
I've owned this camera for several years now and although the resolution is starting to get low by todays standards, I still greatly enjoy this camera. I absolutely love the 10x zoom, and the pictures taken are much better than if you would have a cheapy low-end 3-4 megapixel camera. For anyone on a budget, this camera now offers alot of quality for an affordable price.

Olympus C-700
We have had this camera for over 6 years. Paid $600. The best buy we have ever made in a camera. Have thousands of great pictures. Has performed better than expected - never a problem with using the camera zoom. The camera has taken many trips with us and spends much time in several boats during summer months. My wife has taken many bird and nature shots which she has printed - all are very sharp detailed.

Good as long as its limitations are understood.
This is not my family's primary camera, this is the camera we use in the pool or during harsh conditions/activities. The underwater pictures are cool, though not the best. The outdoor pictures are good in bright light. Where this camera may disappoint is in lower-light settings, including indoors. For that we have a different camera. When I was reading reviews deciding if I should buy this camera, I found one comment that really summed it up along the lines of: the best camera is the one you'll actually have with you at the time. In that sense, this is often our "best" camera because I never hesitate to carry this camera since it is so sturdy.

Great camera, great Olympus customer service
My husband uses this camera while fishing, and it takes surprisingly good pictures! I own a Nikon SLR, but I don't want to use my camera in the boat or kayak due to the possibility of water damage, so I use this camera often as well. I have really been pleased with the quality of the pictures. They are really sharp -- easily the sharpest and highest quality photos I have seen out of the 4 different digital point and shoot cameras we have owned (the others being a Nikon Coolpix 3200, Canon Powershot A540, and a Polaroid A310 that we got for my son that was the absolute worst.)
Also, the rechargeable battery is a wonderful feature. I primarily used the Canon Powershot before getting my SLR, and it ran on AA batteries. I thought that would be handier than a rechargeable battery, but I was wrong -- the 2 AA batteries wouldn't even last through one t-ball game, much less an entire day of shooting. I missed so many memorable moments because my batteries had run out -- even though I tried to always keep replacement batteries with me, it would take a little time to change them out, and bam! the moment would be gone. I have never owned a worse product as far as battery life. However, this Olympus camera has lasted my husband a month on a single charge. Granted, he doesn't take as many pictures as I take, but for it to last that long was remarkable. And the rechargeable battery is much more economical -- I used to feel like I spent as much money on batteries as I would have on film when I kept pouring batteries into the canon.
We bought this camera mainly for the waterproof feature, but the shockproof feature has, unintentionally, come in handy several times. (Those of you with children can probably figure out why!) For the price, I don't think that you can beat those two features. Plus, we recently had an issue with a replacement part, and received absolutely wonderful customer service from Olympus. "Customer service" seems to be a term that is nonexistent these days, so it was a pleasant surprise dealing with them. I was so impressed, and would definitely buy an Olympus product again.
All in all, this was a great purchase, and out of all the point and shoots we have owned, this is the only one that is still around and is still used regularly. I would highly recommend this purchase, or better yet whatever the upgrade from this is, since we got ours almost 2 years ago.

Been everywhere with it until it broke
I have taken this camera as my primary to Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as numerous backpacking trips in the US. Great to swim with, really like the internal lens, fantastic image quality for its size. I finally broke it shallow scuba diving in Turks & Caicos, but I don't blame the camera since it was never meant to do this in the first place, and I had really thrown it around for two years. I have since replaced it with a new stylus, which doesn't have the internal lens, but has almost imperceptibly better image quality.

shockproof camera for young child
We bought this camera for our (precocious) grandson's 4th birthday over a "toy" camera. It was a bit of an extravagance, but not that much more than we would have spent anyhow. The key appeal is its purported "shockproof" feature. We added a gel case for extra protection. The other thing that made it preferable to cameras made for 4-year-olds was a rechargeable battery. He is amazingly adept at operating the camera, using the menus, etc. And he LOVES that it's a "real" camera.
So far so good on the shockproof...

What is everyone thinking who rates this good?
I bought this camera to replace an aging Nikon Coolpix 2500 2.1mp. I excitedy ran out and took pictures of all sorts of things with both cameras in similar modes. I was expecting more awesome pics, but instead every pic from this camera was inferior - every one! Anyone who thinks this camera takes sharp pictures is clueless. Because it was a gift i felt obligated to take it on my trip to europe last year. I was with a friend who had some european camera with 5 megpxls. Every picture she took from the same angles came out better. Finally i dropped it for the first time and it broke instantly. It would only work in one mode. I have dropped that old nikon half a dozen times and it still works perfectly. I decided to use it for general work pics after that, and use my old nikon for important photos. after less than a year, the FE-170 had sand in the lens and stopped working. I dont even know where it got the sand i tried to baby it. anyway, it totally sucks in image quality and reliability. Don't even think of buying it.

Purchased this camera for my daughter's birthday gift. The pictures she has taken as a beginner were very clear - she hasn't had the goof ups she has with mine. I am attributing that to the image stabilization. I loved the menu to help guide her on settings and she really likes the large screen. It was a good purchase - her camera is better than mine now (which was an earlier Olympus Digital camera).

Frustrating!
I started having problems with this camera within days of the warranty expiring. The memory card I had for it was an Olympus one, and fully compatible with the camera, and I had been using it with no problems for almost 12 months. However, I'd be taking pics and a menu would pop up with "Power Off, or Format" on it, and I could only get rid of it and continue using the camera by selecting one option. Frequently, the "power off" option would not work, as the menu would persist as soon as I turned the camera back on. There were many times where I had to choose the format option, thereby deleting any pics I had just taken on the card, which was really disappointing to say the least. Then, not long ago, it just decided to stop taking pictures at all. Now, when I go to shoot, I can see through the LCD screen just fine, but once the picture has been taken, it comes out black - nothing. I've tried resetting the factory settings, changing the batteries, formatting the memory card, removing the memory card, adjusting image quality, and taken pics on every setting there is, but nothing works. Funnily enough, it still takes video, which can be viewed and played back fine, but no pics. Complete waste of money, and after this experience I won't be buying Olympus again :(

This Camera is a grate little Camera. That is right little it is perhaps the size of a pack of cigaretts. But Wow what grate pictures you can take with it. When I bought mine I was very impressed with it, So much that when a friend of mine was looking to purchase a Digital Camera I bought them one of these Olympus FE 170 Cameras. You have all the differant settins on this Camera thet you could ever possabibly use and all the soft ware and cables for picture transfer to your computer are included. This is a grate Camera and very in expensive I could not beleve the cost for such a good product. My recomendation if you are looking for a great and in expensive Digital Camera buy this one and get the 512 Memory Card for it. I have done this twice and I have no regrets. Only prase.

Great daylight camera.
I love my Olympus Stylus 400 for daylight photos, but no matter what I do, pictures taken at night (whether in nighttime mode or not) come out EXTREMELY blurry. This has been a great disappointment; however, I have no complaints about indoor flash or daylight outdoor pictures. They always come out great!
Rating :
Versatility Nil
This may be OK for taking snapshots of your friends or kids around a birthday cake, but it does not perform well in most situations.
1) The cameras sensor is not very sensitive to light, so photographing indoors out of the flash's range is impossible (blurry images).
2) The video mode has no sound AND does not allow you to zoom in at all. Even if you zoom-in all the way, as soon as you put the camera in video mode it zooms back out.
3) Even if you are unconcerned with shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO levels, you should still look for a camera that has a way to have a bit of control over these things. For instance, many consumer cameras have a "sports" mode for fast moving subjects. This mode sets the shutter speed to be fast, and therefore eliminates motion blur. THIS CAMERA made blurry pictures of Moneen onstage at the Warped Tour even though they were in full sunlight. With a setting like the one described above, I could have had some great visual memories of the show.

front door breaks too easily do not buy--olympus customer service sucks
DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA WARNING!!!!!!!The front door that is used to turn the power on to take pictures breaks too easily--Olympus customer service will do nothing to help. If you look on the web multiple people say they have the same problem which equals a design flaw and they will not help. The $300 plus I paid is in the garbage and Olympus wants $$$$ to fix it and will do nothing to keep a customer. As far as I am concerned I am running the camera over with my car and NEVER BUYING AN OLYPUS AGAIN.

Very good point and shoot camera.
I've had my Olympus Stylus 400 since Christmas of 2003 and take it everywhere I go. It's compact size allows me to stick it in my pocket if I want to. It has been a rugged little camera. I do a lot of camping and hiking and have dropped it on rocks before and it keeps on taking great pictures. I originally bought it for the fact that you could buy an optional waterproof case. I wanted that feature so I could use it while participating in water sports, it worked great in those situations too. The outdoor picture quality is exceptional for a point and shoot camera. I use another camera for serious photography but this camera takes extremely good photos for someone looking for a simple to use camera. The XD memory cards were expensive at first but they have gone up in capacity and down in price.
The battery life is very good between charges. I always have at least two batteries for my cameras. I've found that the battery will last through a three day weekend with a lot of picture taking without a need for the back up battery.
One very cool feature that no one here has mentioned is that this camera came with a remote control. This is great for setting the camera up on a tripod and having the ability to get in the shot without having to set the timer and run in front of the camera to get in the picture. You can take as many pictures with the remote and never have to reset the camera. I don't know of another camera that has a remote like this.
Drawbacks: The first drawback I noticed was it's small size and flat shape. I know I'm getting a little contrary here but the same small size that allows you to put it in you pocket also makes this a camera that is hard to grip with your hand. I have dropped mine several times and learned early on to always use the wrist strap that comes with it. It would be nice if this camera had a little shape to it that allowed you to grip it. I've had some problems with the sliding on/off door that also acts as a lens guard. This can be annoying at times and you'll be getting ready to snap a shot and it will suddenly shut off because the door has slid just a little toward the off position. This can be avoided with a little pressure on the door while using the camera. I think some of the problems with the door has been due to my rough treatment of this otherwise durable camera. A good buy for the money.
Rating :
Good camera, but it's dead now.
I bought this camera about 3.5 years ago and took thousands of pictures with it. It was my first digital camera and I loved the convenience of digital photography and the small size of this camera. We got a lot of great shots on hikes, some pretty good pictures while diving (using underwater case), and treasured family photos including our new baby. I did eventually learn how to work around some of the idiosyncrasies - for instance, pre-focusing at the halfway-down shutter detent position really helps to get clear pictures. The low light performance is marginal, and the flash is next to useless. Over the past couple of months it started to flake out - started recording pictures with bad timestamps and the sliding front panel switch became so sensitive that the camera kept turning itself off while I tried to take pictures. I took the front panel off to clean out some lint and when I put it back together it didn't work any more. (So don't do that!) I am replacing this camera with the Canon PowerShot SD900 because I really liked my friend's SD550 and my Mom's SD800.

Questions & Answers
Question : How to recovery deleted pictures from an Olympus digital camera?
The pictures were captured with an Olympus FE-210 digital camera on June 6 between the hours of 8pm to 2am. On Friday they were formatted/ deleted. I've tried online recovery website but it recovers recently deleted pictures. If someone could give me any websites, companies, or telephone numbers that can help me retrieve my pictures, do tell. Thank you sooo much!!
Answer:
first off, formating and just simply deleting stuff are similar, but two different things. When you format, you're re-writing the build up of the card so that your camera can read/write to it. Everything getting deleted is just an extra side-effect. When you delete something, you're just erasing that particular area of memory.
if you've already formated the card, then theres pretty much nothing that can be done, you're pictures are unfortunately lost. If you just deleted the pics, theres an off hand chance you can still get them back.
just google something like memory card recovery
heres one site I found:

Question : I got an Olympus digital camera. Not super impressed with the quality -- should i get a refund?
I bought an Olympus 8 megapixel camera with 5X optical zoom. I used to own a 8 megapixel Sony camera... the Sony had excellent quality (Carl Zeiss Lens). The Olympus camera was on sale so i decided to give it a try. it is difficult to take clear, focused pictures with this camera. should i get a refund? What is your experience with olympus cameras?
Marie--what model was your camera?
Answer:
i've got an olympus fe310 (8 mp, 5 x zoom) & photos from it are fantastic. i've tried a pentax with similar specs. but the olympus is far better. what model olympus are you talking about ? are you SURE you've focused correctly before taking picture ? sometimes it is hard to focus on some objects that don't have good definition.

I have not used the camera for about four months and I had never put a pass code of any kind into it but now it's asking me to enter my code. Why has this happened and is there anyway to get around it. Other sim cards work in the camera but now all of a sudden my larger memory sim card is asking for a damn password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
There is a white switch on your sim flick it up.
