NOT impressed - falls way short of my expecations

My husband got me this for Christmas last year. Unlike my husband, I'm NOT a photography buff, but I wanted a small easy to use point-and-shoot camera! This camera was bought based on our experience with Olympus, particularly our daughter's Stylus 760! I liked the 760, and thought it would have been more than adequate for my needs; husband decided to "upgrade" to the Stylus 820!

I love the size of the camera - I can easily slip it into my handbag without it being a nuisance. That's probably the best thing I can say about it.

The outdoor shots with this camera have been merely OK, not great but the indoor shots/ night time shots are terrible!

We've been so disgusted that my husband has considered passing on this camera to our 10 year old, and buying me another camera of another brand, probably Canon.

Did I mention that the Olympus neoprene case recommended on Amazon, for this camera, actually fits very badly? I switched to a no-name case that fits nicely, takes up a lot less space in my bag and cost me half what I paid for the Olympus case!

Based on my experience, I am not tempted to buy Olympus again!

Look away! Do NOT buy this hunk of junk!

I take many many pictures and I absolutely HATE this camera. The only pics that come out barely average are the outside pics. The inside pics are dark and blurry. I have messed around with the settings and still cannot get any sort of improvement! Do NOT buy this camera. For what I have been readng you want the Fuji Finepix f40fd, the Cannon Powershot SD1000! I purchased the Fuji and so far LOVE it! The higher the ISO number, the better. Good luck! Happy shopping!

Very Disappointed

The Stylus 820 has a short battery life, the inability to turn the power off while connected to the computer to conserve battery life, it locks-up while taking pictures requiring removal of the battery to restart, the images are often blurry even when using a tri-pod, and the cheap plastic battery cover broke the first week and had to be replaced. Crap! Crap! Crap!

Please don't purchase this camera

I am a huge olympus fan and was looking for a small camera to replace my chunky C-765. The Stylus 820 was given to me as a gift and I've tried to use it, but every photo is blurry. I've adjusted the settings, I've used the highest quality settings, etc - nothing changes it. And I'm not shooting professional photos, but when an average group photograph in the middle of the day with no extremes (lighting, colors) and it STILL can't turn out? Its just a bad camera. Its begun to freeze on me, requiring me to take out the battery and put it back in. Its too late for me to return it to Olympus, but I'd just strongly discourage anyone from purchasing this camera.

The Olympus 820 is crap - do not buy this piece of junk

For 20 years I've been a user of the Olympus Stylus cameras first film and then a Stylus 410 (took on the appalachin Trail for 2100 miles). They were great! However beware!! This 820 is trash. Very, very poor quality pictures, even during the day. This company needs to repay folks for their purchase. They should not get away with putting out a product like this. There are too many folks that have the same poor quality that I have.

Editorial Review :

The FE-370 delivers a surprising level of performance in a compact package. Its precision 5x zoom lens captures the exciting details of every scene. Thanks to dual image stabilization, a feature that combines both mechanical and digital image stabilization and is incorporated in an FE series model for the very first time, clear images are always ensured. In addition, intelligent auto mode makes it easy to take great images - it can automatically detect a range of common shooting scenes and then adjust settings accordingly. With Advanced Face Detection technology, the FE-370 is the ideal camera for perfect pictures of human subjects. It's able to recognize up to 16 distinct faces and select the ideal shooting parameters - and matched with the smile shot function, it will automatically take the picture when it detects your subject's smile. Like its fellow FE series cameras, its small and sleek metal body features 8 megapixels. Shots can be framed and reviewed on the large 6.9cm/2.7" LCD.

indoor pictures are awful!

From an another point and shoot camera, I opted for Olympus FE-240 in spring 2007. It is not difiicult to use, but pictures taken in indoor are very much deceiving. When I compare those pictures taken by other cameras at the same place and the same time, I am really frustrated...

Easy to use But....

The camera is very easy to use, but the picture quality isn't great. I have a Sony Handycam with digital camera(1.5 Megapixel) which takes better picture (may not have the resolution).

Overall a good and very handy camera for the price I paid. Amazon did a good job in shipping it promptly.

Pretty neat little camera, I bought this as a Christmas gift and it arrived really quickly. Comes with USB cable, wrist strap and battery charger. Holds 12 high res pics without a memory card, and about 100 low res. I recommend a memory card in addition. Good item for the price.

Smitten by Olympus

Here I go again! Just 5 weeks after my wife and I bought the Olympus FE-340 and FE-290 on the same day (see my other reviews), we decided to go ahead and buy another digital point-and-shoot. No, nothing was wrong with the earlier two cameras, we just decided that since they were very inexpensive, why don't we buy another one and just stuff one in each of the 3 cars in our household? That way, we don't have to keep reminding ourselves to bring a camera whenever we go somewhere. And since we were so impressed with the FE-340 and FE-290, there was nothing else on our minds but another Olympus. We have already gone thru a lot (as in a lot!) of cameras in our 26 years in the hobby and we've outgrown that desire for all the bells and whistles that can be found in other brands and models in this category. Let me make one thing clear to you: just the fact that you're searching for cameras in this category means that YOU WON'T USE THOSE ADVANCED FEATURES you're looking for in other models. I am definite that you'll never get out of the all-auto mode in 99.99% of your shots! If you do, I am also sure that you won't even be searching in this category! C'mon! The real purpose in looking for a point-and-shoot is just exactly that - so you can just point-and-shoot! And for that, this FE-240 is more than adequate - nice optical zoom range, nice LCD size, nice button placements - all at a price way more inexpensive than inferior models from other brands!

Great first couple months....

I purchased this camera in late June and had the greatest luck. It takes great action shots of kids playing soccer! But as time wore on the camera started to not function properly. And I rarely use this camera and have been especially good care of it. It now will only take one picture at a time. Where as it used to take picture and you only had to wait one second for the screen to clear. But now I have to completely take the battery out to get the camera to turn off. All the buttons freeze up. Maybe I just have a lemon in this camera, because everyone else's reviews are great. Overall good camera for the price. But not I'm not impressed at all. If you are looking for a good camera. Go for a sony or Nikon.

Grainy Pictures!

I bought this camera after doing plenty of research and previously owning an Olympus camera. Well, it seems the 5 year old Olympus worked better than this one.

I hate this camera! If you are shooting outdoors with plenty of light or macro pictures, your shots will probably come out alright.

Any pictures I have taken indoors, in low light with a flash come out looking grainy, and several look blurry, even though I have image stabilizer turned on. The image stabilizer doesn't appear to do anything.

The zoom is also horrible, and all the picture I have used zoom on have turned out grainy.

I'm very disappointed, especially considering I paid [...] for this camera. I think I'm going to buy a Canon to replace it.

EXCELLENT COMPACT DIGITAL

Ok i read reviews about this product and the nikon cool pix. I own a large SLR Nikon D80. I ave shot with a small canon powershot for years. I started in manual 35 mm. This camera is great. I was happy for years with the photo quality of my Canon , as well with their software and support. It was an early model and slow. I am learning my big Nikon D80 and for its money i am sure it can do loads of brilliant things, still not terribly active with it and disappointed in Nikons Web support and image quality sometimes. As i said it may be i haven't unlocked its potential but small reservations along with reviews led me to be suspect of going with Nikon on my new compact digital. A friend suggested olympus, i saw some of her photos from a very basic and older model and the color was amazing...stil hesitant to go with a manufacture i never handled, the reviews seemed positive and the photos i had seen were proof. I bought this model and almost everything is perfect. -
It SHoots very large format photos for later processing.
-Adjusts quickly,
-the flash photograpy retains the color you were looking for in the first place
- preset modes, menus and choices are fully functional and usable as tools.
-enough manual adjustment and preview mode to real have some flexibility in creating the right look in the photo.
-menu was easy to learn
-though i have photoshop, its own software program seems very straight forward and functional.
-movie mode
-panorama
-they don't really explain enough about it various features and settings in the product description.
Cons are:
it only has the digital viewer, no physical view finder. ie you find yourself shading it in bright light to see what you are trying to photo. not a problem for me though, everything else is too nice
-as well they use the their own media type exclusive to Olympus. I got over that too!
Great buy you won't be disappointed

Great Overall Camera

This camera is a great balance of high quality pictures, zoom, price, size, and durability. As seen in the pics at Disneyland and California Adventures, it takes excellent pictures that capture sharp details. The camera also suffered a drop during this trip, and the fall didn't phase it at all. Another selling point for me was that it's weather-proof and that a rechargeable battery is included. You don't have to worry about precipitation spoiling the camera or buying batteries/rechargeable battery kit. The only downside to this camera was that I had to buy the memory card separately (but that would have had to happen with any other camera, as I found in my research - I recommend the 2GB...nearly 500 pics on super high quality!). This camera is the total package and I highly recommend it!

Questions & Answers
Question : Can you help me decide if I should keep my new Olympus digital camera.?
I just got a new Olympus FE-230 7.1 digital camera. It takes an xD memory card. My Gateway Media Center laptop has a port that accepts SD size memory cards, but not the smaller xD. I have not even taken the camera out of the box. I'm thinking I should exchange it for a camera that requires SD cards so it will be compatible with my computer . Please help me decide. I don't need anything fancy, just a basic camera and this one seems to fit the bill. Would I be better off with one that takes SD cards? (for computer compatibility) Seems like there are more SD cards on the market than xDs. Does that mean they are better? If YOU were buying a camera today would it make any difference to you if it took an SD card or an xD card? Thanks.

Answer:
The camera that you purchased is a very nice camera and is inexpensive. I would say that you should keep the camera and that you should purchase a card reader or just use the USB cable that came with the camera(even though it is a little slower and will eat up some battery life) but you can recharge the battery and as long as you keep up with that you should just use the USB cable that is in the box. Keep the camera. SD is not better or worse by the way, but olympus and fuji both make XD and that is one way they are able to compete in the Digital Camera mkt. by making proprietary accessories.

Question : Anyone have an Olympus digital camera?
I've owned two different Olympus cameras now and both times have had trouble with battery life. I'll put in a brand new pair of batteries and within an unreasonable amount of time the camera tells me the battery is dead and turns off. I've tried different brands of batteries and still no luck. What gives? Anyone else have this problem?

Answer:
I'm on my second Olympus also, and there are several issues to content with any digital camera. If you mainly use the camera indoors, the constant firing of the flash will help to kill the batteries. Also remember that using the optical zoom function often, will do likewise. Lastly, leaving the LCD monitor on for long periods will shorten the fun. Answer -go to Target or Walmart and buy rechargeable AA's for $20. This has nothing to do with Olympus.

Question : What do you need to use an Olympus digital camera?

Answer:
everything u said. go to a local photo store. plus battery to

Question : How should I clean my Olympus digital camera?
I want to know the best way to clean my screen and outside of my DIGITAL CAMERA! Thanks!

Answer:
Just use a lint free cloth to clean the digital camera. If it is really sticky you can find cleaning pads for electronics which should be safe. The best option is to contact your manufacturer and ask them what their cleaning recommendation is. Good Luck!

Question : Where is the best place to buy a spare battery and memory card for Olympus digital camera.?
Also can you buy in car chargers for digital cameras Thanks. Sorry should of said where in the UK.

Question : i have an olympus digital camera model d-200L. the cable it uses is not compatible wilth my new computer?
i want to load pictures from my olympus to my computer and all i have are usb ports and this camera cable has serial port connector. is there an adapter that would work .or someway i could get these pictures in my comp.

Answer:
easiest solution is get a USB card reader for your type of card. connecting the camera to your computer always in more cases than not (because of driver issues) f's up either your camera or computer. so get the card reader (under $20)

Question : For the Olympus digital camera: D-580, where is the focus button?
I have this Olympus digital camera D-580 Zoom and my mom doesn't have the booklet. I'm trying to take pics of my jewelry, but I cant take close ups cause they look all fuzzy. Does anyone know where the focus button is (or the macro button/setting)?

Question : What Program comes with the digital olympus camera ?
The program that pops up when you plug the camera into the computer. It's a Olympus FE-100 4.0 megapixel, we bought it like one or two years ago... If that helps. Whatever.

Answer:
go to the manufacture site and it will tell you about the program

Question : oookay why wont my olympus digital camera upload pictures to my computer?
well here's what happens. whenever i plug in the usb cable from my computer to my camera, the camera automatically shuts off. it doesn't do that when not connected. the batteries are full, it takes pictures and works fine. my computer is a windows. im using the program that came with the camera (olympus master 2). oh and it use to upload just fine before now oh and the computer also doesn't detect anything. so why does it shut off when conected? yes the batteries are new and good condition

Answer:
The batteries may be fully charged, but are they in good condition? If you've got another set of batteries, or a DC supply, I'd try those.
