Get what you pay for!
I got this as a part of a rewards program, so I didn't know exactly what I was getting before it came, but I was hoping to have a cute birthday present for my almost 14 year old. When I read the reviews, I got nervous. So I popped it out and took it around with me a couple days, including an evening at a Sonics game that the hubby won tix for.
I didn't run out of battery power, so I am thinking consumption is on the high average of most digital equipment. The lag time is what it is for most dig cameras, you can't spend a hundred bucks and think you will get something that speedy. It was as slow as my 3 year old 5mp that I love, and yep I have to anticipate the shot for it.
Really the critical thing is the prints, and yes they are soft. That is because a 1gb card can hold 500 somthing on "normal" on a 7mp camera!!! The compression rate is extreme!!! I set it to fine, and when looking at the photos, print size is about 8x10, give or take, but looking at pixel size it is incredibly artifacted.
So if you want something that gives you phenomenal enlargements, well nope, but even tho my daughter shows signs of wanting to follow in my photographic footsteps, this is the camera she can take all around with her, goof around with her friends, and come to me if she wants something more artistic.
People who are severely disappointed with it, well the best quality and features cost more than a hundred bucks.

Wonderful for the money
I'm not someone who can afford a pricier camera but I love to take good pictures when I can. Mostly, I take pictures of my family, pets, vacations, and some random nature shots. I previously had Fuji cameras and were very happy with them. When it was time to move from my 4 megapixels Fuji to something with more mega pixels, I decided to go with this camera for the price and because it could use the same memory cards as the Fuji. Without a doubt, the regular pictures that I took with this Olympus were wonderful. They were crisp and clear, even after cropping. The only thing is that some times the pictures were a little dull but I would simply darken the contrast with the software and the colors would turn truer and more vivid. I loved the clean, larger, close up videos as well (although I wished it had sound). However, I still used my Fuji for closeups. The super macro mode on this camera gave me blurry pictures, the regular macro was too grainy. I was absolutely frustrated with the camera up to this point. What I found out though is that if you play around with the camera long enough, you will get what you want. I finally realized with super macro mode, you had to focus first and indoors, you needed extra light. Also, use the image stabilization when using super macro. The pictures were amazing! Once I figured the camera out, I went crazy taking pictures every where I went and having so much fun with it. Many people after seeing my pictures have asked what type of camera I used and are shocked when I tell them, they were expecting something more expensive. Obviously, if I had a couple hundred dollars to spend on a better camera, I would. But this camera definitely gave me more than enough for the price.

A serious Battery problem...
As many others have said, this model and several other Olympus cameras have a problem that renders it unusable. I had the typical "Battery Empty" problem. I contacted Olympus service, downloaded an "update" , then the camera quit entirely. The next step is send it in. With no warranty it is not worth any repair charge. Customer service left a lot to be desired as well. With plenty of other choices this camera/brand is not recommended.

No sound on video!
This camera is fine if you want to just take pictures. Very nice pictures.
Two problems.
1. No rechargeable battery. I bought some rechargeable AA batteries and that has worked OK.
2. This is a BIG problem. The video has NO SOUND. What's the point of shooting video without sound? Just terrible.
I would not recommend this camera.
Rating :
DON'T DO IT......NO AUDIO
This camera has no audio so every video that I've recorded has NO SOUND!!! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard (NO PUN INTENDED!). What's the point of having the movie feature if there's no microphone to record the sound??!! I recorded my daughter's 3 rd birthday and I'm absolutely upset that there is no way for me to recapture any of those moments. Buy a different camera. AND the only way to take pictures is by using the screen so the battery has to be recharged frequently.

Panorama with 2G Olympus XD memory doesn't work
I'd give this a better rating, but I can't do Panorama Pictures with the new 2Gb Olympus brand XD card I bought with the camera. I put a 1Gb Olympus XD in and the Panorama option works. So, it looks like the camera has a firmware problem recognizing the newer 2Gb Olympus XD cards.
Olympus will only allow Panorama pictures with "their" brand XD cards. So, I was extremely disappointed when I discovered this problem.
So, I only gave this a 3-star rating since with 8Mp pictures you really do want to use as large of memory cards as possible... For all types of pictures.
No firmware update is currently available on the Olympus website to fix the problem. If they fix this problem... I'd give the camera a 4 or possibly 5 star rating.

Disappointing, to say the least
The FE-340 is the third Olympus camera that I have purchased. Not that I am loyal to the Olympus brand, but I am used to the controls so I figured I can't go wrong. That was a mistake. This is the worst of the cameras I have bought. I love the re-chargeable battery, but that is about the extent of what is good about this camera. Pictures consistently come out blurry, no matter what mode is used. I have taken many pictures at events I have attended, only to come home and find that they are blurry and thus useless. I would not recommend this camera.

Olympus is a terrible company!!!
I had this item for two weeks and was kneeling on the floor taking a picture and the camera slipped out of my hands. It fell maybe a foot (remember, I was kneeling). When i picked it back up it would not turn on. We sent it bck to Olympus because we were well within warranty, and they sent us a letter back saying that since it was an "impact" issue, our warranty was null and void, but that they would be happy to repair it for us for $90. The camera cost us $175 new! They wanted to charge us over half of the cost of a new camera to fix it when they should have honored their warranty anyway! We will never buy an Olympus again and I recommend that you do not waste your money!

You can choose your picture size and it also records. The Olympus CD is easy to use, and pictures upload and print beautifully. I highly recommend this camera for everybody!!

The SP-500 is a hybrid digital-camera. It's shaped closer to an SLR than a compact model. The optical zoom, however, is 10x - compared to 3x on a compact model. When compared to a 35mm, the SP-500 has a focal length of 38mm to 380mm. That's wide-angle to large telephoto, yet the lens remains extraordinarily compact. It's designed for easy use but has manual capabilities to let you exercise your creative potential. Overall...a very fine camera. Recording Modes - DCF Exif 2.21, JPEG , PIM 27 shooting modes - AUTO, Program Auto, A, S, M, MY, Scene Preset (Portrait, Landscape, Landscape + Portrait, Night Scene, Sport, Night + Portrait, Indoor, Candle, Self-Portrait, Available Light Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Museum, Behind Glass, Cuisine, Documents, Auction, Shoot & Select1, Shoot & Select2, Beach, Snow) Panorama Modes Up to 10 frames automatically stitchable with Olympus Master software when using Olympus brand xD-Picture card Switch things up by adding an optional conversion lens via the threaded lens barrel. Camera speed and image quality receive a great boost thanks to the exclusive TruePic TURBO Image Processor Record up to 4 seconds of sound with each still picture captured, or add sound later on Uses xD-PictureCard storage Uses 4 AA batteries - We advise purchasing optional rechargeable AA Playback images on the LCD, a computer or your TV in a slideshow using any of 9 transitions Comfortable ergonomic grip Windows PC and Macintosh compatible Size 4.15 W x 2.93 H x 2.80 D / Weight 10.05 oz.

AWESOME CAMERA
I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THIS CAMERA, THEN MY APARTMENT WAS BROKEN INTO AND STOLD IT, AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH, THAT MY SISTER BOUGHT ME THE SAME CAMERA FOR MY BIRTHDAY.

Very disappointed
I bought this camera based on reviews on this site. I was buying it to replace a Cannon Powershot camera that my youngest daughter had dropped and broken. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with this camera. It is hard to get a clear picture without the flash on and who wants to use flash outside? It is also slow, eats through batteries and is not user-friendly. I don't know what camera I'm getting next, but after owning this one for only 6 months I DO know that I'm going to put it on an auction site and use the money to put towards a new one!

I loved this Camera
This was a very smart purchase for me. I loved the camera from day one..until...my neice dropped it and it broke...It was very easy to use and very user-friendly..I did however, purchase another camera, but purchased a SLR this time...but nonetheless, for anyone who is not ready to take that leap to the SLR, i would definitely recommend the Olympus, by the way, that was my second Olympus...

Love this Camera
I bought this camera to shoot pictures and videos of my kid during swim meets. I am an amateur. It only took me 15 minutes to figure the camera out using sport mode to film fast pictures and the video mode. Close-up pictures were stable, lighting great even thought the subjects were moving. The zoom is fantastic and I could easy video swimming and zoom in at the same time for an amazing close-up. It automatically adjusted to the various lighting levels of the different swim pools. I could zoom in on the coach who was on the other side of the pool while I was in the bleachers for a candid close up. I could even take close-up still photos of kids racing freestyle.

More Versatile than at First Glance
It has taken me most of a year to really delve into all of the settings and little tweaks at the SP-500UZ user's fingertips. Most of the automatic settings are great in most situations, so long as you pay attention to what you are doing, but the avid photographer will be pleased with the depth and breadth of the manual settings and the brilliant photos it takes. This camera is a real trooper that I have taken with me to the tops of mountains, and it has helped me get the best pictures I have ever taken. My only real complaint is that it is difficult to use the manual focus accurately.

Amazingly slim. Very accessible. The sleek 0.7" thin body of the FE-190 is compact enough to slip in and out of your purse or pocket with ease. You'll be amazed by many features packed into this little camera - like the built-in help guide, Digital Image Stabilization mode and the 2.5" LCD screen.Pull it out of the box and start shooting. It's that easy to take great pictures with the FE-190. Use the built-in help guide to select the right camera settings for all environments.Shooting a moving subject? Experiencing a bit of camera shake? Not a problem with Digital Image Stabilization technology. With this big screen it's even easier to preview, frame, shoot and share pictures, not to mention use the camera's menu when necessary.

I have taken really great pictures with this camera! It is super slim and small and can be taken anywhere. I love the image stabilization feature, because most digital camera's I have come across, blur when shooting action shots. Not this camera. I absolutely love it!

Poor Durability, and poor customer service
I was given this camera as a Christmas gift last year. It took good quality photos at the time(not the best at enlargement but good for computer use, and 5x7 photo prints), it was compact, and easily portable. At Thanksgiving this year (So about 11 months after I received it), I took it down off the shelf to take photos, but all of the photos had horizontal lines through them. I switched the battery, tried new memory, and it was still having problems. I searched online and found that I definitely wasn't the only one.
I called olympus and they told me that it was under warranty, but they could only give me a warranty repair if I provided the original purchase receipt or credit statement. I told them that I got it as a gift, and they told me that I needed to go to the person who gave me the gift, and get a receipt from them, or a statement. I went to the person who gave me the gift, and they no longer had the receipt (of course), and had canceled the credit card that they had bought it with. They called the CC company, and they would send him a mailed statement but it would take 2-4 weeks to recieve, and then even if he priority mailed it to me, it would take another 3-5 days to get that, *and* there was no guarantee that Olympus would take it, because multiple items were purchased in that transaction at his local Best Buy. By the point that I got the statement, the camera would be out of warranty. I'm really frustrated with Olympus because of the lack of customer support, and the lack of durability with the camera.

Question : I have an olympus digital camera that keeps saying my "sim card is locked"?
I have not used the camera for about four months and I had never put a pass code of any kind into it but now it's asking me to enter my code. Why has this happened and is there anyway to get around it. Other sim cards work in the camera but now all of a sudden my larger memory sim card is asking for a damn password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
There is a white switch on your sim flick it up.

Question : My Olympus digital camera won't focus, what do I do?
I have an Olympus FE-280 and all of the sudden it just started not focusing. Whenever I turn it on it makes these weird beeping noises and once the picture actually shows up it's all blurry and won't even take un-blurred pictures. I've never dropped it and the camera is only about five months old. Is there anyway that I can fix it?
Answer:
SEND IT IN UNDER WARRANTY

Question : I got an Olympus digital camera. Not super impressed with the quality -- should i get a refund?
I bought an Olympus 8 megapixel camera with 5X optical zoom. I used to own a 8 megapixel Sony camera... the Sony had excellent quality (Carl Zeiss Lens). The Olympus camera was on sale so i decided to give it a try. it is difficult to take clear, focused pictures with this camera. should i get a refund? What is your experience with olympus cameras?
Marie--what model was your camera?
Answer:
i've got an olympus fe310 (8 mp, 5 x zoom) & photos from it are fantastic. i've tried a pentax with similar specs. but the olympus is far better. what model olympus are you talking about ? are you SURE you've focused correctly before taking picture ? sometimes it is hard to focus on some objects that don't have good definition.

Question : How to recovery deleted pictures from an Olympus digital camera?
The pictures were captured with an Olympus FE-210 digital camera on June 6 between the hours of 8pm to 2am. On Friday they were formatted/ deleted. I've tried online recovery website but it recovers recently deleted pictures. If someone could give me any websites, companies, or telephone numbers that can help me retrieve my pictures, do tell. Thank you sooo much!!
Answer:
first off, formating and just simply deleting stuff are similar, but two different things. When you format, you're re-writing the build up of the card so that your camera can read/write to it. Everything getting deleted is just an extra side-effect. When you delete something, you're just erasing that particular area of memory.
if you've already formated the card, then theres pretty much nothing that can be done, you're pictures are unfortunately lost. If you just deleted the pics, theres an off hand chance you can still get them back.
just google something like memory card recovery
heres one site I found:
http://www.ultimateslr.com/memory-card-recovery.php
