Best Buy

This is the third Olympus Stylus 1030 SW I've purchased in the last year for myself and family members. We have had no problems with this camera at all and buying through Amazon is absolutely the way to go.

The only negative feature with this camera is very, very low volumn when you use the video side of the camera and Olympus is aware of the problem.

Not great....

I got this camera a few months ago to have a rugged camera that I could use at the beach and stick in my pocket. I had a Canon Powershot SD600 before that had been ruined by beach spray. Previous to that I had an Olympus Camedia D-560 Zoom in college which had been abused thoroughly and survived 5 years and mutliple countries. I was disappointed with the Canon as it was so delicate so I decided to switch back to Olympus.

To summarize... This camera is well below average. I have tried using it in a variety of settings and all have been subpar. I waited to write a review after a few months, thinking I might be able to work out the kinks - but after a wonderful Thanksgiving - I felt I must mention this camera's inadequacies:

1. The camera takes rather blurry pictures when it should not - it's pot luck - some turn out alright, many do not. There is a setting that is supposed to eliminate this problem, but it does not.
2. I like simple cameras that don't require me to adjust the setting for any moment. This camera doesn't allow that so when a moment strikes -pictures often come out either overexposed, blurry, or grainy. Ridiculous for a camera of this price.
2. The movies are absolutely terrible - seriously, I could probably draw a flipbook better than the movies this thing takes. I was amazed how absolutely horrible the movies are after my previous two cameras - one 3.2MP and the other 6.0MP. I realize this is not a camcorder, but it's nice being able to take brief movies when the moment arises - as my old Canon was able to.

Overall - I am very dissapointed with this camera. I have not used the underwater capabilities but have let my 3 year old niece use it to see how rugged it is. Actually that's the best thing so far - I have no worries that she'll break it and don't really care if she does.

Back to Canon now.....

takes LOUSY, Grain, noisy picutres

I've always leaving 4,5 stars reveiws, and there is a reason I think 1030 sw sucks.

I bought a refurbished one on Amazon on Oct 27,2008; and I first seen this camera when hiking with my friend in New Hampshire last winter, I heavily relied on the customer reviews on Amazon to make a decision (was going to by a canon SD), and somehow I pretty set up my mind in buying one so I just ignored the negative reviews and think they either got a lemon or they don't know how to shoot a good picture.

And this Thanksgiving my friend came from Detriot to Boston and brought his Canon 1100is, we went to Boston, Harvard University and took a trip to Ipswich which is a beautiful town north of Boston. I wasn't trying to compare anything but just copied all our photos into one folder and boy was I surprised.

ALL & EVERY picture that was taken by my $300 something camera was noisy and not focused well, while pictures taken by canon were way better. My friend tried to convince me that my investment was good but even he can tell the huge difference, all the details, focus are lost with this olympus SW 1030 camera. I know how to shoot good pictures and I am so pissed that I spend 300 bucks on this high-end camera and it takes lousy pictures.

I was upgrade from a Canon A610 and bought my girlfriend a Canon SD 900, I moved to Olympus because I read an article said that they had a very good DSLR E520, so I figure the SW 1030 should be good, and also I do lots of hiking, mountaineering and sea kayaking, it's just the picture quality is too bad to tolerate, it's far worse than my 3-year-old A 610.

Don't say I am not buying the right camera because this camera is good for waterproof, shockproof and all that things. Of course I love those features but I love good quality too!!!!!!!!! If you think quality matters than don't buy this camera, believe me or not you will find out yourself.

I've sold mine after Thanksgiving plus the extra 60 bucks I spend on the cases, xD cards, I am thinking of moving to a canon sd 990 but don't have the money now, I'll just wait for the price drop on sd 990.

It does the job well

I won't go over all the points & features others have already covered well. So I'll just quickly note I am very happy with this camera. It doesn't have the best lens by any means or the strongest zoom, but it is amazingly waterproof. We used it in the ocean snorkeling as well as in the pool taking various shots and videos. Worked like a charm.

You do have to play with the numerous settings and modes to get some pictures to look just right -- especially in lowlight situations. (Daylight pictures were no problem.) I found some night pics didn't always come out so well and it was very much a matter of trial & error to get them to work, so be sure to practice before trying to take pictures of an important event, trip or moment. Also the flash is not the strongest either so be sure your main subject(s) are fairly close and pretty much forget about the background showing up if it's any real distance away. The panorama function worked really well in just about every situation and the camera can even stitch the images together for you itself and you can see the results in a few seconds.

The camera fits nicely in the pocket of your shirt or pants. The charger will charge the battery fully in about an hour or so. We also bought the orange flotation strap which did keep the camera from sinking in water. It's a good, solid all purpose camera which we had a lot of fun using.

Editorial Review :

The FE-370 delivers a surprising level of performance in a compact package. Its precision 5x zoom lens captures the exciting details of every scene. Thanks to dual image stabilization, a feature that combines both mechanical and digital image stabilization and is incorporated in an FE series model for the very first time, clear images are always ensured. In addition, intelligent auto mode makes it easy to take great images - it can automatically detect a range of common shooting scenes and then adjust settings accordingly. With Advanced Face Detection technology, the FE-370 is the ideal camera for perfect pictures of human subjects. It's able to recognize up to 16 distinct faces and select the ideal shooting parameters - and matched with the smile shot function, it will automatically take the picture when it detects your subject's smile. Like its fellow FE series cameras, its small and sleek metal body features 8 megapixels. Shots can be framed and reviewed on the large 6.9cm/2.7" LCD.

Great for sports shots

I bought this camera to take pictures of my sons playing baseball and for our little league year book. It is easy to use and has features that help me to get the shots that I need. The sports setting takes shots without a delay, and by holding down the button, I can get multiple shots so that I don't have to try to time out the play at home plate in order to get the shot. I have been very pleased with the results.

Correcting Amazon Description

Amazon should correct the media accepted by this camera. According to Olympus website: "Removable Media Card xD-Picture Card(tm) (1GB, 2GB), microSD (MASD-1 is required." Just my two cents. I rated this camera 3 stars just bacause is needed for a review, but I really never played with this camera.

Auto mode and user interface needs work

Just got this camera recently but here is my initial take. Ideally I'd like to have a camera that can take intelligent pictures without much guess when in auto mode. Some of my pictures in auto mode will come out nice and others will come out blurry, even in good light conditions. Any settings saved in auto mode or scn mode are reset just by changing modes or turning off the camera. So if you don't want to use iESP and want to use spot focus instead, you have to keep resetting it each time. Settings will only be saved in P, A, S, M or video modes. Macros come out really nice. Zoom is great, but can loose focus in auto mode especially if zoomed to the max. The evf switches to lcd screen after each shot, so you have to watch it on the screen after each shot and not on the evf. When switching between scene modes, you have to go through lots of buttons and you cant see how the image looks through the lens, instead you see the built in images representing each mode and then it switches to a text description for each mode. I miss having the scenes on the dial and to be able to see the images as they appear while going through each scene. The feel and the construction of the camera is excellent. If Olympus can just work on their user interface and the auto intelligent mode, this camera can rock. Sometimes when you have to take a quick shot, you want to rely on the auto mode.

SP-565UZ is a dream camera for me! Great for Genealogy!

I owned an 550UZ for 18 months and decided to upgrade to the 565UZ for the extra mega-pixels and other feature differences. I'm an amateur photographer but married to a professional. We originally purchased the 550UZ so that I had a camera that was easy for me to use yet if I wanted to I could override the settings while I learned more about photography from him. First, I have used both cameras extensively for copying pages from books, copying photographs, and snapping microfilm screens in libraries for my genealogical research. With the document mode the camera is in almost the perfect settings. I always use a custom white balance so that I don't have to do ANYTHING to the book photos. I have taught several other genealogists who are not techies to use this camera and set the white balance! The same camera goes immediately outside for tourist pictures with stunning results. Like all AF cameras you have to be aware of where the camera is focusing and make sure you press the shutter button down half way and give the camera time to focus. Many times I get as good shots as my husband's (his still has more pixels!). The extra 2X zoom helps get nicer long shots in focus. My favorite part of working with this camera is being able to swap between outside landscape mode to available light shots to documents within seconds!

Question : My Olympus digital camera won't focus, what do I do?
I have an Olympus FE-280 and all of the sudden it just started not focusing. Whenever I turn it on it makes these weird beeping noises and once the picture actually shows up it's all blurry and won't even take un-blurred pictures. I've never dropped it and the camera is only about five months old. Is there anyway that I can fix it?

Answer:
SEND IT IN UNDER WARRANTY

Question : oookay why wont my olympus digital camera upload pictures to my computer?
well here's what happens. whenever i plug in the usb cable from my computer to my camera, the camera automatically shuts off. it doesn't do that when not connected. the batteries are full, it takes pictures and works fine. my computer is a windows. im using the program that came with the camera (olympus master 2). oh and it use to upload just fine before now oh and the computer also doesn't detect anything. so why does it shut off when conected? yes the batteries are new and good condition

Answer:
The batteries may be fully charged, but are they in good condition? If you've got another set of batteries, or a DC supply, I'd try those.

Question : How to recovery deleted pictures from an Olympus digital camera?
The pictures were captured with an Olympus FE-210 digital camera on June 6 between the hours of 8pm to 2am. On Friday they were formatted/ deleted. I've tried online recovery website but it recovers recently deleted pictures. If someone could give me any websites, companies, or telephone numbers that can help me retrieve my pictures, do tell. Thank you sooo much!!

Answer:
first off, formating and just simply deleting stuff are similar, but two different things. When you format, you're re-writing the build up of the card so that your camera can read/write to it. Everything getting deleted is just an extra side-effect. When you delete something, you're just erasing that particular area of memory. if you've already formated the card, then theres pretty much nothing that can be done, you're pictures are unfortunately lost. If you just deleted the pics, theres an off hand chance you can still get them back. just google something like memory card recovery heres one site I found: http://www.ultimateslr.com/memory-card-recovery.php

Question : What Program comes with the digital olympus camera ?
The program that pops up when you plug the camera into the computer. It's a Olympus FE-100 4.0 megapixel, we bought it like one or two years ago... If that helps. Whatever.

Answer:
go to the manufacture site and it will tell you about the program

Question : Is there anyone who repairs Olympus Digital Camera in Singapore?
I brought my 725sw camera to the Olympus service center in singapore but the quotation of the repair costs about S$300, which is not reasonable. Is there anyone who can do the job for a lesser cost?

Answer:

Question : Can you help me decide if I should keep my new Olympus digital camera.?
I just got a new Olympus FE-230 7.1 digital camera. It takes an xD memory card. My Gateway Media Center laptop has a port that accepts SD size memory cards, but not the smaller xD. I have not even taken the camera out of the box. I'm thinking I should exchange it for a camera that requires SD cards so it will be compatible with my computer . Please help me decide. I don't need anything fancy, just a basic camera and this one seems to fit the bill. Would I be better off with one that takes SD cards? (for computer compatibility) Seems like there are more SD cards on the market than xDs. Does that mean they are better? If YOU were buying a camera today would it make any difference to you if it took an SD card or an xD card? Thanks.

Answer:
The camera that you purchased is a very nice camera and is inexpensive. I would say that you should keep the camera and that you should purchase a card reader or just use the USB cable that came with the camera(even though it is a little slower and will eat up some battery life) but you can recharge the battery and as long as you keep up with that you should just use the USB cable that is in the box. Keep the camera. SD is not better or worse by the way, but olympus and fuji both make XD and that is one way they are able to compete in the Digital Camera mkt. by making proprietary accessories.

Question : How do I take a VIDEO from my OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA and import it to my pc using a USB CABLE.?

Question : I got an Olympus digital camera. Not super impressed with the quality -- should i get a refund?
I bought an Olympus 8 megapixel camera with 5X optical zoom. I used to own a 8 megapixel Sony camera... the Sony had excellent quality (Carl Zeiss Lens). The Olympus camera was on sale so i decided to give it a try. it is difficult to take clear, focused pictures with this camera. should i get a refund? What is your experience with olympus cameras? Marie--what model was your camera?

Answer:
i've got an olympus fe310 (8 mp, 5 x zoom) & photos from it are fantastic. i've tried a pentax with similar specs. but the olympus is far better. what model olympus are you talking about ? are you SURE you've focused correctly before taking picture ? sometimes it is hard to focus on some objects that don't have good definition.

Question : Anyone have an Olympus digital camera?
I've owned two different Olympus cameras now and both times have had trouble with battery life. I'll put in a brand new pair of batteries and within an unreasonable amount of time the camera tells me the battery is dead and turns off. I've tried different brands of batteries and still no luck. What gives? Anyone else have this problem?

Answer:
I'm on my second Olympus also, and there are several issues to content with any digital camera. If you mainly use the camera indoors, the constant firing of the flash will help to kill the batteries. Also remember that using the optical zoom function often, will do likewise. Lastly, leaving the LCD monitor on for long periods will shorten the fun. Answer -go to Target or Walmart and buy rechargeable AA's for $20. This has nothing to do with Olympus.
