Can't Get a Good Low Light Picture
I bought this camera because of the large rear LCD viewer, and because I had a Coolpix 4300 that took Great shots. I'm ready to sell this S50c now. I cannot get true color in lower light indoors, even with the low light settings. The pictures come out blurred and yellow. I lost an important evening event because all the pictures were blurry, too dark or grainy. This camera is not easy to navigate either. Really sorry I bought it. Not recommended.

Junk
Horrid little camera. Cheaply built, it falls apart. Don't try sending back to Nikon for repairs, they will insist that you "dropped" it. Sorry Nikon, you dropped it. One of the truly frustrating purchases in a long while. Ironically, was forced to buy it when Samy's camera ran out of Canon's. The pictures are good but who cares when the camera falls apart?

Dissapointed this camera bares the NIKON logo!
I am a big fan of NIKON cameras. My D40X is the best camera I ever bought. But this one is a big disapointment. EVERY SINGLE picture that I have taken with this camera has needed to be edited before I could print them. Even in red-eye reduction and Potrait mode, every picture of a human being has RED EYE. Also, 1 in evey 4 pictures has a light spot somewhere in the photo. No matter how much I clean the lens or adjust the light in the room, I am still getting white spots on the pictures. Most of my shots are at parties or bars (low light situation) maybe thats the problem but I've tried everything and I can't get this camera to take great potraits that I can just shoot and print. I spend hours removing red eye and touching up white-spots with photoshop.

Beyond the numbers and behind the specifications, there are some key elements in choosing a digital-camera: Ease of use, Ease of carrying, Attention to detail, Creative potential. Nikon Coolpix L1 has a 5x Zoom Lens that extends from 38mm to 190mm (35mm equiv) focal length for diverse photo applications. A bright 2.5" LCD screen lets you preview and play images without squinting. With automatic, manual, and a menu of different shooting modes, the L1 offers simplicity without compromising your creative potentials. Then, of course, there's Nikon's reknowned reputation. There are lots of numbers but, overall, the L1 takes the lead in this class. 2.5-inch 115,000-dot TFT LCD Monitor with brightness adjustment Media - SD Memory card compatible (not supplied), 10MB of internal memory / For practical use we advise getting an Optional 256MB or 512MB memory card as an initial SD Storage accessory Shooting Modes -- Still - Auto, Scene Assist (Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night portrait), Scene (Party/Indoor, Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night landscape, Close up, Museum, Fireworks show, Copy, Back light, Panorama assist), BSS (Best Shot Selector), Color Options, Blur Warning, Date Imprint, Self-timer (10 sec.) / Movies - With sound - TV movie (640) at 15fps, Small size (320) at 30fps, Smaller size (160) at 30fps Built-in Speedlight (Flash) - Range - 1 ft. 8 in. ?- 11ft. 6 in./0.5-3.5m (W), 1 ft. 8 in. ?- 6 ft. 7 in./0.5-2m (T); Flash modes - Auto, Auto with Red-eye Reduction (In-Camera Red-Eye Fix), Off, Fill flash and Slow sync USB and Audio Video Output (NTSC/PAL) connectors Capture Modes - 1) Single, 2) Continuous (approx. 0.7fps), 3) Multi-shot 16 (16 frames 1/16 in size) Battery Life (approx) - Approx. 100 shots with alkaline, 400 shots with lithium AA Dimension (W x H x D) - Approx. 3.5 x 2.4 x 1.9 inch

Simple and easy
I really like how simple the interface is. True point and shoot camera with a great quality picture. I bought this as a present for a family member so I am really waiting to here their review on it. I like the aspect that it has a 5x digital zoom which is plenty for a point and shoot camera.

Great first generation
This is a first generation Coolpix. Was it worth is $$$ at the time? Absolutely. Is it worth $$$ now? Not quite so. My advice: go for the newer Coolpix. The series is excellent, so you can't go wrong with it. But the most recent models are thinner and I believe have a better LCD screen in the back.
If you're looking for a basic point and shoot, it's excellent.
5 x optical zoom - that saved me more than once. 3x just won't cut it at times, and digital zoom is another word for pixelized (unprintable).
Easy interface - I learned on this camera. The one-touch buttons are easy to use, and the camera has cool features such as portrait or landscape help. You press that, and it gives you place holders of where the heads should be, or how to align things, so that you can have better composed pictures. It's like a little helper!
Good white balance and contrast. I've taken great B&W shots with this camera, as well as good, boosted color shots with this camera. In fact, you may be so spoiled with the quality of your own shots, that you won't like what you take with a DSLR! It just makes everything you take better.
Very durable and reliable. I've owned this 3 years and NEVER had a problem. Added bonus: you can use rechargeable AAs with this camera. Meaning, you're on travel abroad, you don't have to cry that you're out of battery - you go to the local grocery store, buy AAs, and you can keep shooting. That is definitely NOT the case with other cameras these days.
Conclusion: great value. Awesome pics. Easy to use. But its little brothers and sisters in the Coolpix family are just way cooler.

:-))). En general excelente compra, fotos muy nitidas. Recomiendo este producto ampliamente!

It's the photographer, not the camera
I received this camera as a gift for Christmas 2005, and have used it extensively (over 5k photos and videos) for everything ranging from portrait photos to architectural photos to concert photos, and it has never let me down. Granted, it's not the best performer in low light situations, and it would have been handy to have a few additional exposure settings, but it's performed really well for me.
Contrary to what some of the reviews have said, the battery life is just fine. I shot The Cure during a show at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland on June 18, 2008, and I got close to 250 shots before I had to switch the batteries. Also, the quality of said photos has more to do with the photographer than the camera. Don't blame the camera because all of your shots come out blurry. Play with the settings and stabilize yourself when possible, and seriously, don't expect every single shot to come out amazing. Perhaps you could do that with enough skill using an SLR, but with a point-and-shoot, it's not realistic, so be realistic, and you won't be disappointed. :)
With that said, I do plan on upgrading to a better camera soon, but this model has served me well, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Coolpix S510
Purchased this camera as a gift and the recipient is thrilled with it. We both like the image stabilization feature, particularly in a pocket-sized camera. Camera has the versatility to allow the simplest of high quality point-and-shoot for the beginner, but with the capability to control more of the picture taking process, if desired. Great camera with nice array of features for a fantastic price.

Nice compact camera - amazing time lapse
I purchased this camera for the sole purpose of having a time lapse camera. That is a small feature that is noticeably absent from most point and shoots out there. This feature doesn't disappoint. You can have it automatically record a 30 fps .avi file, or just keep the images from the time lapse separate. I was a little apprehensive that the time lapse was only VGA quality, but with video that's fine. I kind of wish there were an option to take pictures at intervals less than 30 seconds. The camera is smart enough to turn off the display in time lapse to save battery life. I love this feature and it has really opened my eyes to see things in a new light.
Other thoughts: VERY noisy above ISO 400. ISO 1600 unusable - unless you're using it to time lapse, at which point the noise is not so noticeable. Don't ask me why I had the ISO kicked up so high since I obviously had the camera stationary, it was a mistake. On that note, this camera does allow you to set the ISO, and of course it does have auto ISO.
I like the metal front. I love the very fast startup time. The screen in the back is pretty bad. It really makes images look grainier than they are.
I would buy this camera again. Given the features and the low cost, I can get over the bad screen and poor low-light performance. The images are what matters and this camera definitely performs.

5 star if you need small
The Nikon S510 is a very good small camera. If you want a small take along camera you can't find a better camera. I took several photos with my Canon S30 and compared them to this camera and the Nikon had better sharpness and depth of field focus at same lighting and same all auto settings. It looks like this camera has been replaced by the S210 which is similar in specs, but sells for a lot less. If you get a good deal on the S510 it still might be a better deal than the S210 since they look like about the same camera. Movies come out great if you like to play with that stuff. If I had to give it a rating comparing it to all the cameras at any price and size it would probably be a 3.8 star, but for a small inexpensive camera it is a 5.

Great point and shoot for Mom
My wife asked for a low frills, easy to use camera to take with her on vacation and to use to document work situations. This camera fit the bill; I didn't have to spend more than 5 minutes helping her become familiar with it. Next to jewelery, it is probably her favorite present.

Nikon COOLPIX S510 8 Megapixel Digital Camera - Silver
I'm a digital portrait photographer, and I have a DSLR and alot of equipment that I lug around whenever I'm on a shoot. My digital SLR is a workhorse... however, it's heavy and it's an expensive camera (not to mention the lenses that I work with), and it's just not practical or logical to carry it around when I'm not doing a formal shoot with a client.
So, I looked into getting a small, compact, and cheap (money-wise) point-and-shoot camera that I could slip into my pocket or my purse for everyday moments, that I could whip out at any second and start taking pictures. I had a Canon SD800 IS for awhile... and while it was an okay camera, it tended to blow out the highlights more often than not... so I searched again... and knowing that Nikon tends to be a bit more conservative with highlights, I came across this little camera, the s510. I didn't need a high-end point-and-shoot. I already have my DSLR, and high end compacts tend to be larger than a pocket... and I wanted something cheap, around $150 or so, and this fit the ticket.
The image quality is good, if you're not expecting gallery quality photos, but it's still great for prints up to 8x10, at least... it's great for snapshots of friends, family, kids, pets.... it's an everyday camera. The video quality is something I am impressed with, taking decent sized videos that look great, especially in the right lighting conditions... but the audio is so-so, so if you're looking for a camera that'll take clear sound files, look elsewhere.
It is definitely for people with smaller hands... if you have bigger, bulky hands, then you'll find the small buttons annoying, especially the zoom. I'm a young female with average hands, and I don't have a problem with it, but my boyfriend, who has much larger hands, can't stand it.
Overall, it's a fantastic camera if you're not expecting miraculous pictures all the time, and if you're just looking for a small (and it is indeed a very, VERY small camera) that you can store in your pocket or purse.
I found this review, http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/CPS510/CPS510A.HTM , very helpful, if you are interested in this camera.

LENS ERROR WTF??
i bought this camera 3 months ago and it was taking some really great pictures. Then suddenly, while i turned it on a week ago, it came up with lens error and made a weird buzzing sound. I have researched this problem and it has happened to many people. just google nikon coolpix lens error. i would highly suggest that you should get a cannon powershot instead of a nikon coolpix.

it's ok
This is a plain, non-technical review for an average user.
I wanted a slim point-and-shoot that would produce fairly good images for max 5x7 prints...
Well, this camera seems to only work well in good sun -which is a typical thing with many cameras...along with the impossible to see display ...I mean you cannot see what you are shooting in a nice sunny day, as the diplayed is washed out.
The image quality is so-so. I probably should have played with the white calibration more, with other numerous setting, but I wanted a point-and-shoot camera, not a cockpit panel.
The battery drain is noticeable. The next-shot speed is AWEFUL..It takes its time to adjust focus... Then it goes into sleep mode every 1 minute if not sooner, so if you are trying to get a shot of your precious grandson when you need an ever-ready camera, this one is not it!
On the positive side, it fits in the hand nicely, has fairly intuitive controls, and is indeed small. The download from internal memory was a breeze. I never bothered to installed the software.
I took three shots under rain and the poor thing died. So glad it did.

Defective cameras!
It's been a while since I've been motivated enough to bother posting a review, but I'm furious and fed up with Nikon's garbage. I originally had a Coolpix L11, the model one notch below this one. It worked decently enough for about a week, and then suddenly the camera would no longer turn on. The power button did nothing. After eliminating batteries, lack of charge, etc. as possible suspects, I took the camera to an electronics repair shop and was told that the power on\off switch was malfunctioning. The cost to repair it would have been almost enough to buy a new camera, so I chalked it up to "sometimes stuff happens" and let it go. A few months later, my sister received a new camera for herself to replace her outdated one; the new one was another Coolpix L11 identical to mine. Surprise, surprise -- again after a full day's use, the power button suddenly went kablooey and the camera could not be turned on. This time, my father was rightly annoyed about the situation because he'd just bought the camera that morning, so he marched it right back to the store and exchanged it. To my knowledge, the exchanged camera works fine, but that's still 2 Nikon Coolpix cameras in a row with the same manufacturing defect. Now onto my review for the L12. I received an L12 this Christmas to replace my original (dead) L11 with its malfunctioning power button. I took the L12 out of the box for the first time just tonight. Brand new, plastic and shrink wrap and foam covering still intact in the box. Guess what? It won't turn on. The batteries are absolutely brand new and were included in the box. The camera's never been out of its protective wrapping. It's simply defective. The SAME defect that the other TWO Coolpix cameras had.
I'll be returning it later this week and I'm sure the store will make an exchange on a clearly defective product, but at this point, I don't WANT another Coolpix. This line of cameras by Nikon is obviously defective on the manufacturing level and I should not have to waste my time and money buying and exchanging cameras, essentially trying one after another after another until I get one that works. 3 out of 4 defective cameras with the exact same flaw, brand new out of the box, already broken? You have to be kidding me.

Overall, a good camera for the price
I chose this camera as my birthday gift almost a year ago. I have been quite pleased with it so far. It's a good first time digital camera, and the user manual and settings are really easy to navigate. I buy lithium batteries, so they last longer. I've taken it with me on vacations and was pleased with the ease of use and good pictures it takes. My best pictures have turned out when I am as steady as possible, especially with low light--I usually hold my breath.
The only negatives for me have been the slow processing time when using the flash and the noise in fireworks pictures. But I try to avoid the flash because natural lighting is much nicer.
I've also posted some pictures taken with the L12.
Overall, I think this is a solid, reliable camera that takes good pictures.

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks
Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question.
Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.
Answer:
yes and no
99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?
Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!
Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's.
Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR
There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.
Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?
Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need.
