"Broken" LCD

I decided to buy this camera for my daughter because of the reasonable price. I thought that we would be luckier than the people who ran into the "Lens error", shutter malfunction, Broken LCD... problems, but it turns out that this camera is very fragile and I made a terrible decision (for buying it and also for buying the extended warranty).

I bought it new in Feb this year. In May, the shutter did not function (close half way, and did not open). I sent it to Nikon and they repair it free of charge. But then, last month, the LCD viewscreen "broke" even though there is no crack, no apparent physical damage, no dropping. Nikon charges $56 for repair, plus a stiff S&H $12.50, plus tax, bringing the total to $71.86... almost the price of the new camera!

I called Nikon and they said "Our evaluation determined the screen is damaged from excessive pressure causing it to bleed. ... this damage is not the fault of the product or of manufacturing and is not covered by warranty".

Well, expensive lesson! I was warned by the many negative comments, but I did not listen! :-((
Very disappointed in Nikon this time!

Spend a little more on a Canon

Bought this for around $80 on amazon, new. It is just that, an $80 camera. Has a hard time focusing and blurs a lot. I get an error message saying picture is blurry even when it is not. Small, compact, yes. Worth $80, maybe. Frustrating...

Better Price and Product Than Competitors

I have not run into the same problems with this camera as I have with other brands. Although the color in the pictures is a bit dull, it still focuses extremely well, including in underlit areas. The image is constantly adjusting to get the best shot possible, so that's a plus.

The coolest feature so far is the Panoramic Assist. Using this feature, you take your first photo, then move the image to the right and you can see a ghost of the previous image showing up to the left, helping you determine where to line up your next shot. It's pretty neat.

There are multiple modes on this camera along with Panoramic Assist, such as Face-priority AF, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait, Party/indoor, Beach/snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Night landscape, Close up (Macro), Museum and Fireworks show.

The zoom isn't spectacular, only a 3x, equivalent to 18.6mm. The digital zoom is a joke, as it is with all digital cameras. Please don't use this feature on *any* camera!

Deleting images is a snap! Take a picture, don't like it? You don't need to go into the preview mode. Simply click on the trash can button twice and scroll down to Yes and you're done. Need to go back to shoot? Hold the shutter button down halfway and you're back to where you were before.

The Nikon L11 also allows for video and, in my opinion, does a pretty good job of it. You have the option of 160, 320 or 640. Definitely nothing to produce a movie with, LOL.

In preview mode, if you use the zoom in button, it will zoom into the photo you are previewing (obviously), however, if you click on Menu, your photo will be cropped to that size that you are currently viewing. A pretty neat feature. Up, down, left and right can be used interchangably, as down and right are the same (going up in numbers), left and up go down in numbers.

The maximum off time is 30 minutes, which makes it ideal for uploading photos from your Eye-Fi. You can also turn sleep mode off. I have never had any issues with this camera uploading with the Eye-Fi.

I wouldn't highly recommend this little one, but it's recommended, nonetheless. I will say that this camera is much better than some competitors that are price $100-$200 more.

TOO SLOW!

do not buy this camera! this is my first Nikon, and will most definitely be my LAST. it takes about 10 seconds to even take the damn picture!! that may not seem like much, but when youre at a convention trying to take pictures of people walking, or even just celebs sitting down and slightly moving...you get a ruined, blurry picture. this camera is perfect if you are taking pictures of a rock. but anything that moves, worthless. i couldnt even take pictures of my 2 year old niece because she moves too much and the picture takes forever to save. flash is worthless.

Customer Review :

Disappointed enough to try something else.

Amazon's price is more than a hundred dollars higher than the typical price all over the web. What gives, Amazon?

Best feature: the swivel. I would never buy a camera without that.

Disappointments:

Being a 30-year Nikon user, I had high expectations for this camera. But...

First, there is no viewfinder, so that on a bright day it's often impossible to frame a shot because you can't see any image on the digital screen at all. This is a HUGE disadvantage for outdoor photos.

Second, I don't pretend to be an expert on cameras, though I've used them on 6 continents. This camera, which I had for about a year, was often disappointing in terms of graininess and colors. I was predisposed to like it (love Nikon), but it just kept not living up to expectations. I don't expect a zoomed picture to be perfect, but it always seemed that no matter how high I set the quality, results typically required way too much fixing in Photoshop. Very time consuming.

Too often a batch of shots leaned heavily to one main color or another. For example, I shot a "roll" on a boat cruise (lots of water reflection) and ALL the photos, boat deck, other ships on the water, even the cityscape, were almost entirely cyan. Desaturate the cyan, and you had a darn near black & white photo. Someone said I might have had it set for indoor. Doubt it, but in absolute fairness can't stake my life on it. I do know it was on Automatic.

Before this camera, I used an early digital Nikon, a dinosaur by today's standards. But it's only problem was speed. And it was twice as big. Otherwise, it took far better pictures than this one, with much less fiddling around to adjust color and quality after the fact.

Third: There were some things I thought were problems but I haven't used other digital cameras enough to compare. When the camera was set to shoot repeatedly while the shutter was pressed, only about one in ten shots in that mode wasn't blurry, making this feature of limited benefit. That seems odd, given the stabilization feature. Others have already mentioned spots in the pictures. The lens may look clean, and you may wipe it clean, but you'll sometimes get spots on the pictures in their darker areas--more Photoshop time.

Fourth, I realize one cannot drop cameras on sidewalks with impunity... But it was a short fall, from the pocket of the coat I carried at my side. (I once dropped my iPhone from 4 times that distance, leaving a dent in the case, with no harm to the innards.) This relatively minor jarring caused the camera to present an error message when turned on, and it will cost more than $200 to repair it--nearly the cost of the camera (elsewhere on the internet). Given my disappointments over this camera, I will not okay the repair, but purchase a different brand instead... one with a viewfinder, a swivel, and hopefully better photo results.

excelent zoom, excelent quality, compact for the zoom size. great handling, easy to use. beautiful. the rotating body makes it easy to take pictures of yourself or in awesome angles. pre-programmed modes work really fine and allow you to do well in basically all situations. some manual controls make it fun to operate. some difficulties to focus when in macro mode but you learn how to do it. it misses control of apperture.

Outdoorsman

I paid too much for this product. I wanted a Camera that was lightweight with good zoom that I could pack hunting to take pictures of wildlife. It's a little heavier than I wanted, and the zoom is difficult. The LED does not work very well in any kind of light and it really needs a view port. I'm also unhappy with the delay between actually taking the picture and the picture frame. My wife doesn't even want it!

This camera is amazing!

I bought this camera last year to replace my old, Coolpix 880(I think) that cost twice as much when I got it and took excellent pictures. I didn't think it could be beat, but the Coolpix S10 did it!

As always, the lens is distortion free and the photos are clear with great color, but this camera takes zoom to the limits in this price and megapixel range. I can zoom in on the ducklings in the pond across the street and, with the Vibration Reduction feature, get a perfectly clear photo that looks like a close up on my computer screen.

Last month I was at Salisbury Cathedral in the UK and photographed the Christ medallion at the peak of the West(?) facade. When I put it on my travel Web site, it looked as if I had stood within four feet of it. It just blows my mind!

I recommend this great camera to anyone. It's not mini to carry in a pocket, but the swivel lens makes it easy to take photos high, low or backwards. You can even take movies with sound!

Only two negative criticisms: There is no viewfinder and so it's difficult to see your subject in bright sunlight and the lens cap is pretty chintzy, but costs $8.50 plus shipping to replace. Other than that, if you want a terrific camera in the $250 price range, this is the one for you.

Great size, but at the expense of picture quality

PROS: the worst picture is the one not taken, and with it's size you can always have this camera with you. The large rear-screen is nice. the camera has a ton of features and settings, so many that it takes some time to scroll through them to find the right one for lighting conditions. CONS: It is not really "point and shoot", if you have a fast moving subject or challenging lighting conditions, you have to take some time to find the proper settings, or you get a blurred or grainy picture. the large screen pushes the control panel to one side, which is then difficult to grip without hitting a button unwillingly.

You will want to carry this camera everywhere

For a pocket camera that you will want to carry everywhere, this is a great choice. My complaints are (1) shutter lag and (2) the lack of depth of field in landscape shots; my SLR makes up for the S50's flaws.

The S50 is easy to use and great for family gatherings. My prints always look better than what similarly-priced pocket cameras take in the same settings.

The museum setting is one of my favorites. It works very in cathedrals and museums. I used a tripod and the museum setting to take photos of a night-time light show last summer -- beautiful results! I don't think my SLR would have done any better.

Not Nikon's best

I wanted to like this camera - I really did. I'm an enthusiastic owner of a D80, which I adore. So when I needed a small camera for travel, I thought this sleek Nikon would be just the thing. It looks beautiful, and it's so tiny that holding it almost makes you feel like a spy.

But after using the camera for just three weeks, I returned it to the store. There's the annoying finger-in-the-frame tendency that other reviewers have mentioned: even though you know you need to compensate for that, a finger still winds up in the shot occasionally. There's also the fact that once you account for all the bulky wires and chargers and accoutrements, it's not such a small package after all. And the battery life was far too short. But most importantly, there's the picture quality. Though it is possible to get great shots with this camera, I got far too many that were grainy, and it didn't perform well in low light, either.

I wish this had worked out - I love Nikon and I loved the way this camera looked and felt. I just felt I couldn't trust it with my once-in-a-lifetime travel photos. I suppose if someone were looking for a camera to snap party pictures or around-the-town shots, it could be a good choice.

Easy point and shoot for first time digital owner

I purchased this camera based on the positive reviews posted previously. It has absolutely lived up to its great ratings. This is my first digital camera. I bought it a few weeks prior to a vacation and had no trouble learning how to use it in a short time period. It takes great pictures from moving tour buses as well as amazing close ups of flowers and small items. Its small size made it easy to take on tour. I would highly recommend this camera.

For the people who dont know much about digital cameras...

This is a pretty awesome camera! It takes excellent pictures and if you have a shakey hand, no worries, it has vr reduction that make your pictures come out looking better than ever!
I will say that the menus are somewhat hard to navigate at first. It takes a little tinkering. But straight out of the box it has auto everything so if you dont want to get all fancy, it does the work for you!
It has really cool features, takes EXCELLENT video, and pics are high enough quality to print poster size! If you take a lot of pictures be sure that you have a good enough memory to hold them all if taking all 12.1mp pictures. You can reduce the megapixels if you want.
Another cool features is the BSS, Best Shot Selector. If you have kids playing sports or who just cant sit still, this feature takes up to 10 shots fast and picks and saves the best shot. Pretty cool.

This camera is good for people who want something small, fast starting up and picture taking, and turns out almost professional looking pictures.

The battery life isnt the best, BUT, just buy another battery! Get a high "mAh" battery (cause those last longer). They only cost like $8.00 online, yes, you can find them. Just google en-el 10. The battery takes 100 minutes to charge so I suggest having at least 3 batteries. They are super super small and take up zero room and are way better than lagging around regular batteries.

I would also recommend this camera to professional photographers who want something smaller.

Questions & Answers
Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons! I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself). Thanks!

Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are: Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT? Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused. Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm. As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question. Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's. Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?

Answer:
Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine. Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : Does anyone know where i can get a blue or bronze nikon coolpix s210 digital camera?
What are the actual stores other than online stores that sell the blue or bronze nikon s210 digital camera? All i seem to find is the plum one.

Answer:
Go to Nikon authorize dealer, they can order 1 for you if they don't have it in stock. Nikon's web site will tell you the nearest authorize dealer.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).
