Comparable in design to the popular Coolpix 880, the Nikon Coolpix 885 weighs less (a mere 7.9 ounces without battery or CompactFlash card), and incorporates a one-touch transfer button for directly uploading digital photos to your desktop or the Internet. The ultracompact Coolpix 885 has a 3.21-megapixel CCD for prints up to 11 by 14 inches, an all-glass 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens (38-114mm equivalent in 35mm), plus an additional 4x digital zoom, and advanced image processing features to ensure clear, vivid images under almost any lighting conditions. It accommodates additional Nikon lenses including telephoto, wide-angle, and fisheye converter lenses, and it has a movie mode that lets you record 40 seconds of video at 15 frames per second.

The 885 shares many features with the 880, such as selectable scene modes for specific shooting situations. The 12 scene modes are: Portrait; Party/Indoor; Night Portrait; Beach/Snow; Landscape; Night Landscape; Sunset; Fireworks; Close-Up; Copy; Backlight; and Museum mode, which cancels the flash. There is a quick-review button to display the image just taken in a quarter of the LCD screen, allowing you to still see and shoot any ongoing action in front of you. In addition, the 885 has a five-mode advanced built-in speedlight, five-area multi-autofocus, a 1.5-inch LCD monitor, 256-element matrix metering, and USB interface. For the more advanced photographer, the camera comes with an automatic noise reduction mode for clean images taken at slower shutter speeds, manual white balance settings, and white balance bracketing.

The Coolpix 885 features a comfortable side grip for easy shooting and quick access to all of the camera's controls. This camera comes with a 16 MB Lexar CompactFlash card, one 2CR5 lithium battery, protective lens cap, wrist strap, USB cable, and video cable.

OK - But Have to Recommend To Avoid

Nikon never fixed the red oversaturation issue in these cameras. Red sticks out like a sore thumb and makes the images unrealistic.

I had mine develop some hot pixels under warranty and returned it to Nikon for repair (replacement of the imager). It came back with even more hot pixels than I sent it to them with.

If you want a digital camera and someone is giving one of these away, that's a good deal. As the other reviewers note - see if you can find sample images online that show how bad the red issue is.

And lastly, concerning Nikon as a whole, they may make good cameras now but I'm gun shy after they fixed my camera to be worse than I sent it to them.

I'm looking for a new camera now and have lived with retouching any photos taken in less than bright sunlight (where hot pixels really show up) and also having to manually color balance any images with red in them. Actually, all images come out slightly "off" because red is so enhanced in this camera.

Needless to say, I am not buying Nikon.

dial mode conked out after a year of usage

when i decided to get a digital camera, i went to the camera expert and that for me was NIKON. it was april 2003 when i purchased my first digital camera NIKON COOLPIX 885. after a year of using it, the dial mode just conked out and won't function anymore. i am very disappointed, i had to ship my camera to the only service center in my country. I shouldered the shipment plus the replacement spare part which is going to cost me $100 plus. it has been two months with follow ups in between and i was told by the service center the spare part has not arrived from Japan yet.

of course, after only a year of using this camera, i feel i did not get my money's worth.

i expected a lot from nikon but they failed me. for my next digital camera purchase, i will get PENTAX, CANON or SONY instead

Love it but ready for next step

I really like this camera. It takes great pictures and is easy to use from still shots to soundless videos.
This was my first digital camera. I bought this in 2001 for big money.
After first purchasing it, I ran into a problem with the EL-EN battery not holding a charge. After many stressful attempts with Nikon to resolve the issue - I was able to send the battery back to them for an exchange (although they state they do not warranty the battery). In the mean time, I bought a Lenmar battery as a spare - so now I always keep one charged and ready to go. I would also suggest buying additional memory so you don't run out of space like I did ONCE on vacation.
I am beginning to feel a need for a new Nikon with some features that this camera can't give me. I would like the continuous shot as the recovery time on this camera can seem slow when your trying to take action or quick shots (wedding, etc).
Overall this has been a great camera. I plan to buy from Nikon again. I love the size and hand grip and have no major complaints. :)

A lot of problems

I purchased this for over $500 back in 2001. When I received it on the first day, it has a "System Error" showing on the screen. I mailed it back and received another brand new Coolpix 885.
In these 3 years, I found a lot of inconvenience. (1) Lense cover is manual. I have to remember to remove it before I turn on the camera. If I don't, I have to turn it off and then remove lense cover and then turn it on again. (2) It is a battery eater. (3) Original battery has a very short life. I threw away 2 dead batteries in 3 yrs. (3) It takes a while for the next shot. After I shoot the first photo, I have to wait for 5-10 seconds for the camera to adjust for the next one. Even I use fully charged battery, speed is still low. Speed is fast only when I use an adaptor. (4) To transfer photos from camera to pc, the lense cover has to be closed. If I forget, I have to turn it off and close the lense cover and then on again. (5) The size is not small. (6) My camera just has a minor drop on wood floor days ago, it shows "System Error" again. I emailed to Nikon for tech support. Well, they say some parts inside could be broken and it needs repair. Well, guess this is the time to buy another brand of digital camera. Both of my sisters use Canon and they are very good.
Add'l comment: In terms of the picture quality, Coolpix 885 is very good.

Workhorse

In the last two years, I have taken over 8000 photos with this camera, dropped it several times and it lives in a diaper bag or pocket most of the time and it still takes beautiful photos with no sophisiticated settings. Its 3MP output is more than adequate for family (nonprofessional) photos and prints them up to 8x10 with no quality degredation.

Terrible photo quality

My friends with 3.0 mp cameras get better pictures.

Really grainy
No vibrant colors
Pictures often come out unclear (shakes a lot)

Pros...
lots of features but a camera is for taking pictures and this takes crappy pictures.
Camera looks cool, big screen.

I'd say don't buy, you can find something better.

Great Camera. Very pleased with it. Only concern is the delay after taking a picture and trying to review it immediately. I would've liked to know the specific features of the camera before perchasing it, such as if there were specific settings for certain conditions (action, soft, indoor, outdoor/bright, etc.) Other than that, I am satisfied with this camera.

Great photos but EXTREMELY SLOW taking them!

First the plus side:
The camera is slim, lightweight, well constructed flash guide is good too, but not as good as the s50 for some reason, large LCD screen is top notch.

Now for the negatives:
Absolutely the SLOWEST point and shoot camera at night that I've used since the 90's!
During the day it is not so noticeable, but at night you press the button down, the orange glow lights up peoples smiling faces than nothing, sometimes it takes a painstaking 10 seconds to take one shot at night! while other times at it's best it takes 3-4 seconds... still too long for any modern point and shoot. I think that Nikon, a leader in camera innovation should be embarrassed to have their name on the front of this camera. Buy a Casio or Cannon instead they are both slim and take much faster photos!

Poor customer service

This was a great little camera until the screen turned blck, and looked like it was shattered. We sent it in to the dealer, hoping to have it replaced as it was under warranty. They would not honor the warranty, and said Labor costs would be 180.00, plus 12.00 shipping, plus almost 8.00 tax for the repair!!! (Almost as much as the camera cost).... After many emails back and forth, they could only offer 20% 'good will' discount. We were very disappointed that they would not try to do more to keep a satisfied customer. We will never buy another Nikon.

not so great, even for everyday photos

I've had this camera for quite some time and have never been able to get it working quite right. It's only pro I've found so far is that it takes very nice outdoor photos. If you're using inside, for action shots or for anything with straight edges you don't want slightly warped, move on and find a different camera.
When using the flash, the lens is delayed so any indoor shot have to be of completely inanimate objects. No parties, no kids, no pets. If you're not using the flash be prepared for the shot to be blurry, discoloured or grainy. I've also tried to use the camera to photograph some of my artwork and anything with square edges comes out slightly bowed in the photo.

Love my 4100

I've had the Nikon Coolpix 4100 for about 2 years and I have to say that I love it. At this point I'm familiar with its many modes and have experimented with taking different kinds of pictures and different situations. It has turned me into an ansul adams! This is my first digital camera and I have never enjoyed taking pictures this much.

Two gripes: the LCD screen is small by today's standards which makes it hard to see your picture. There is a noticeable lag between pictures, where you have to wait for the camera to ready itself before you can take the next picture. This isn't always a problem unless you take a lot of pictures of subjects in motion.

Good gift for a teen's first digital camera... but not for a photography lover

If paying under $75.00, go ahead and get it... and know that you're getting for a $75.00 camera.

Positives: it has a lot of features to alter the tint of the photos, has simple on-camera photo editing, red-eye reduction, good zoom, etc. All the very basic essentials you need. And a descent little working camera if you don't pay to much.

Negatives: The flash is way to bright for most subjects and bleaches our the foreground easily (i had to tape a tissue over my flash), has a MAJOR tendency to be extremely blurry if you opt not to use the ridiculously bright flash, gives indoor (using flash) photos a plastic, shadow-less, unnatural look, has a Looonnggg delay after you press the shutter (you WILL miss most your shots by 2 seconds), you must hold it EXTREMELY steady on some settings to produce a half-way decent non-blurred picture, many of the settings don't do what they claim (for example, the 'fireworks' setting has never got me decent photos of fireworks-- they are always blurred, way too dark, and the shutter button delay causes you to miss the explosion every time).

Don't buy this if youre looking for a nice aesthetic (tone, shadow, etc) to your shots or quick camera response. Do get it if you need something to mess around with or aren't picky about picture quality. This would probably be a great gift for a child or young teen who would love his/her first digital camera-- its simple to figure out, has the basic features, lots of settings to play with, and cheap.

Very slow camera.

Picture quality is excellent, especially for a 4 mp camera. The problem is, even with a high speed (80x) SD card installed it takes 5-6 seconds for the picture to save; even when taking low res pictures (that doesn't sound like much unless you consider the millisecond that a kid is able to hold still and look at the camera). When I researched SD cards, I discovered that a high speed card, should be able to transfer data at 8-10 megs a second so I'm not sure why the 4100 is only able to transfer 1/2 a meg per second.
Nikon support states that the test camera they have there also saves at that rate.
My Dad's 5 mp HP camera saves pictures in less than 2 seconds :(

This camera takes the worst indoor pictures

I bought this camera thinking: because its a Nikon it will take great pictures. However, I soon discovered that any picture taken indoors with the flash resulted in round dust orbs or spots appearing in the picture. I had no idea what was causing the problem then, after researching it on internet photogrphy sites, I realized it was a reflection from the flash off of microscopic particles in the air. This made the camera virtually useless indoors. When I contacted Nikon's help number, they acted like they never heard of this problem. Then, a look at their website reveled that they were, in fact, aware of the problem but chose to treat it as an acceptable design flaw - bottom line, the flash is located too close to the lens and results in reflective spots whenever the flash is used. I would definitely not recommend this camera to anyone seeking quality indoor photographs.

She's a tough little camera, all metal and the slider covers the lens. It's nice if you take a lot of outdoors pics, like during rain or high humidity, I think. Nikons take amazing pics, so you can't go wrong.

exactly 1 year later - non functioning camera

Up until yesterday this camera has been decent. I found this on clearance on Aug 13 last year at a great price. Since the last Panasonic Lumix I had died just after the year warranty, i figured i didn't want to spend $400 for another digital camera since we still love our SLR film camera. We opted for this one. Maybe i am just cursed, but just after one year on this one and poof- no more pictures. The LCD is black except for the on screen display, and I can view pictures in memory. It seems like everything still works, except there is no picture. I don't expect to keep spending decent money on digital camera only to have them break DAYS after the warranty expires. They should not be disposable!

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question. Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : Will optional lenses 70-300 etc from a 35 mm nikon 4004 work if i buy a nikon digital camera body?
I have mulitiple lenses from my old 35mm nikon 4004 and I want to use them with a digital camera but I dont know if it can be done...any idea?

All of the current Nikon DSLRs except the D40, D40x, D60 are fully compatible (meter and auto-focus) with AF, AF-D lenses from a N4004 including the AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens. The D40, D40x, D60 cameras meter but do not auto-focus AF and AF-D lenses.

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's. Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?

Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408518-USA/Nikon_2159_18_200mm_f_3_5_5_6G_ED_IF_AF_S.html

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : how do i transfer pictures from a nikon digital camera to my computer?
i plugged the camera in with the cord and someone told me you wait for something to pop up but nothing popped up. What am i supposed to do?

Answer:
Once you are connected, turn on the camera. Then some options should show up. You may find using the card reader on your computer is a better way to go. If you don't have one, you can buy a USB card reader and use it. Or you can call the Nikon help line .... 800.NIKON-UX One of the ways memory cards can become corrupted, is when the batteries die in the middle of a transfer.
