cool
this camera is the best, by far. Cheap and does what you want it to do.

Good camera , poor customer service
I had purchase the P1 a year ago. This will be my second digital Nikon and fourth Nikon camera over the years.
The pros include great optics, numerous photographic effects, vibration reduction with movie mode, fast recover time with mediocre SD cards
Cons which are all minor include, picture dial moves too easily and is bumped easily. Portrait focus is slow and often does not distinguish faces. No viewfinder which renders the camera almost useless in the bright sun with LCD(forcing to take blind shots), WiFi is difficult to set-up.
Nikon service on the other hand is pathetic. Yes the camera was dropped and subsequently the shutter button was damaged. That was the only damage to the camera. It still worked fine only every once in a while the button fell off. I sent in the camera in for repair, the estimate was $150.00, half the cost of a camera. This did not even include a new housing. So this is equivalent to purchasing a $20,000 new car and having to pay $10,000 for a new blinker assembly and with depreciation due to better models being worth $12,000.

Nikon P1 Digital Camera
This point and shoot digital camera is fairly easy to use, however the extensive menu takes some work.

Brilliance with simplicity
I've had the Nikon Coolpix P1 digital camera for more than a year now. This was my first digital camera and I'm considerably satisfied with its performance. Being from Florida, I must mention that my P1 has also stood up well in conditions of rain, wind and fog!
The Coolpix P1 has 16 different modes (and further advanced sub-modes!!) for speedy image capture. There is also an AUTO mode with intelligent flash and self-timer options for that quick snap (at 14000ft just before going on your skydive, or for capturing Shamu's nighttime antics :) )
The coolest features of this camera include the brilliant 2.5inch LCD screen, 8MP stunning clarity, In-camera Red-Eye Fix, D-Lighting, and the video capture ability. These features easily compensate for the comparatively lesser optical zoom (the P1 has 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens with 4x digizoom). Note that this 3.5x lens is what makes the P1 so compact and small in size. When I opened the package, I was amazed at size of this camera and the ton of features it encased.
The P1 has superior video and sound recording capabilities. I've experimented with the panoramic image mode, sports and night modes, and got excellent results. Photos come out clear and crisp, and there is hardly any blurring when the right mode is used. I've had the Wifi setup go smooth and easy, (must mention that being a CS grad helps) and the transfer speed was great. (However, note that using the Wifi excessively depletes the battery fast.)
Nikon has several new variants in the Coolpix-P line now. These boast of improved features, like the eVR (Vibration Reduction capability in P3) and improved image quality. However, the P1 has been a steady performer, giving exemplary performance, unmatched image quality and quick point-n-shoot ease of use. 5-STARS!!! Thank you Nikon!!
p.s: I recommend getting an extra set of batteries Nikon EN-EL8 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery for P1, P2, S1 & S3 Digital Cameras and two of those 1Gb high-speed SD cards for long travel. Happy Photographing!

Great travel camera
I own several Nikon cameras including the D200 and this is a great addition to my photography collection for use on those quick, last minute trips. I throw it in the car or boat for that unexpected shot you usually miss. This camera has great features, produces good quality photos and you won't be disappointed.

Customer Review :
Very good image quality BUT with no manual controls
Noise is not noticeable at Iso 50 and even at Iso 100. Star-up is quite fast, the camera is ready to shoot at just 2 seconds. The lag between shot and shot is slow, u have to wait no less than 3.5 seconds before taking the next shot. The Nikon S5 is made of metal, the look is really good very stilish and pocketable (super slim). IMHO a huge limitation on the S5 is the lack of manual controls to set the aperture and the shutter speed. Also the built-in flash is quite weak Id buy again this item
Rating :
User-friendly Fun Camera
The S5 provides a simple point-and-shoot digital platform for amateurs and novice photographers. It allows you a decent amount of control over your settings while still providing good auto settings.
Incredibly fast to power on and pocket-sized, this camera is ideal for point-and-shoot digital photography.

Questions & Answers
Question : Will the lens of an old nikon camera work on one of the new digital cameras?
I have a nikon 8008s camera with three lens for it. If I buy a new nikon digital camera will these lens work on the new camera?
Answer:
Lenses for an F801/8008 would all be Ai or AF/AF-D. They would almost certainly NOT be AF-I/AF-S (the F801/8008 can't operate the autofocus motor in AF-I/AF-S lenses). They would mount on any Nikon digital body.
The two gotchas would be:
1. Ai lenses (except for the fairly uncommon Ai-P lenses which are actually AF-D lenses without autofocus) would get no metering on anything except the D1/2/3 or D200/300/700.
2. AF/AF-D lenses would not autofocus on a D40/D40x/D60
Another important thing to note: Except on a D3/D700 all your film lenses will behave like longer lenses on digital bodies, due to the 1.5x crop factor of the smaller sensor.

Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.
Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : Will optional lenses 70-300 etc from a 35 mm nikon 4004 work if i buy a nikon digital camera body?
I have mulitiple lenses from my old 35mm nikon 4004 and I want to use them with a digital camera but I dont know if it can be done...any idea?
Answer:
All of the current Nikon DSLRs except the D40, D40x, D60 are fully compatible (meter and auto-focus) with AF, AF-D lenses from a N4004 including the AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens.
The D40, D40x, D60 cameras meter but do not auto-focus AF and AF-D lenses.

Question : Will the lenses and flash bulbs of an older Nikon camera be compatable with the newer digital Nikon cameras?
A family member of mine purchased an older semi-professional Nikon camera in the early '90s, and he was wondering if his flash bulb and lenses, also bought new around the same time, would be compatible with a new digital Nikon camera.
Advance thanks for any help provided : )
Answer:
I am guessing you mean speedlight or flash and not flashbulb. There are probably only a small percentage of the folks on here that have actually ever used a flash bulb. But I know where you are comming from ~lol~
It depends on the speedlight and lens but probably so . Any speelight with a low enough sync voltage like the SB-25 can be used I will link a chart so you can check the flash. If you do not know the sync voltage or if the chart says its above 12 V for Nikon ( 6 volt for Canon) get a wein hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync slave and you can use any speedliht with that between the speedlight and the camera
Here is the chart
http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html
Now as to lenses any lens that is AI, AF, AFd, AFs or AFi can be used
On some cameras pre AI lenses can also be used ( D40/D60) Others they cannot mount on unless they have been AI converted
Yours are probably AF or AFd if they were made in the 90s as they started making them in 1986 and they are still made today,
AI lenses will never autofocus they were manual focuse cameras. In addition only AFs and AFi lenses will autofocus on the D40/D40x or D60
AI lenses will not meter on D100, D90, D80, D79, D60,D50 or D40. They will not matrix meter on the D1 though they will center weight and spot meter, they meter on all other Nikon dSLR
I routinely use lenses from the 70s on my cameras ( D40 and D300) . Feel free to email me with specifics on the camera, lens and spedlight you have gotten. BTW That old film SLR still probably takes great pictures also so keep it around in case you get a yearning to shoot film oneday

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?
Answer:
Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine.
Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : I have a D50 Nikon digital camera, tips on pictures of the night or fireworks?
Going to disneyworld and would like to capture it on camera, but how
Answer:
This can be tricky. IF POSSIBLE, you would get better results with a tripod and a VR lens. Nikon makes VR lenses in 18-135 and 18-200 (among others) that might be useful for this venture.
If you find that the fireworks are all going to pretty much the same altitude, you can pre-set the camera on a tripod, using a bit of a wide angle view to be sure that you capture the whole burst. If they are varied, you can use the tripod with just two legs on the ground or even just one and kind of track the bomb trail until it bursts.
Use the P,A,S or M mode so you have more control and so you can leave the flash turned off. It will pop up if you try this in AUTO.
You will have to use as large an aperture (small numbers) as possible and you will have to use 1-to-2 seconds, maybe even more, at ISO 200 or 400. Familiarize yourself with these adjustments so you can quickly make adjustments if you need to. Once you find a setting that is satsifactory, don't mess with it! Assume that the rest of the shots will need pretty much the same exposure.
I've also taken decent shots of fireworks by laying down on my back and looking up instead of using a tripod.
The D50 night portait mode might be useful for general scenes at night.

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks
Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question.
Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).
