Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a high-quality compact digital camera with a 24-85mm (35mm equivalent) lens, offering an exceptional wideangle zoom capability. Ultra wideangle allows you to capture a wide range of subjects from landscapes to portraits. It therefore sports Fast (AF) AutoFocus that makes it easy to capture the unexpected moments fast and sharp. With its impressive 8.0 megapixels, it has the ability to produce images with amazingly high resolution, giving you the opportunity to use the digital zoom or crop function on your PC to a certain extend for more photographic creativity. Furthermore can this system camera offer you a variety of optional lens converters, optical filters speedlights and software to go even further in your quest for creativity. With this camera you are in control.

The Shutter Lag and EVF Will Drive You Nuts
If you're looking to capture "The Decisive Moment" with the Nikon Coolpix 8400, STOP---DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!! For that matter, carefully check any digicam or other camera with which you want to capture "action," because what you think you see, may not be what the camera has the ability to capture as an image. Let me briefly explain where I'm coming from: I made my living as a field photojournalist for 40 years. By the time I retired out of the business I had probably created something like a million color and b&w film images. I owned and used mostly Nikon equipment all those years (although I sure liked working with Leica rangefinder cameras and short focal length lenses), starting with the original Nikon F SLR (which I still have) and finishing up with the N90S and probably ten different lenses of varying focal lengths. I like Nikon equipment a lot. I decided to begin working with digital images last year. I was attracted to the Coolpix 8400 because the "spread" on the zoom lens was the 35mm camera equivalent of 24mm--85mm. When I worked with film I probably used my 24mm and 105mm Nikkors more than any others in my bag, so this little Coolpix beauty had just about what I was looking for in one package. Let me say that while the problems with the viewfinder and shutter lag make this camera absolutely useless for editorial photojournalism, it is, nevertheless, a marvel of human ingenuity. For many other uses---such as taking pictures of fire hydrants or cows standing in a pasture (put another way, things that don't move), it works wonderfully well. Seriously, I shot an assignment here in Tucson that was essentially architectual in nature. The images can only be described as superb (if I do say so myself). I worked only with the camera and a tripod on the shoot. Working inside I simply changed the light balance within the menu on the 8400 (which you can pretty much do on any digital camera these days), did not have to check the scene with a separate exposure meter, etc. Point being that with film I often carried a bunch of light balancing filters and sometimes a separate Gossen exposure meter and all sorts of lights to shoot an assignment. Even then, I'd sweat blood until I could get the processed film on a light table. Of course with digital, I (you) don't have to worry about any of that stuff. One can check the image immediately and know instantly if you're good to go. Alas, the shutter lag on this, and many other digital cameras made these days, is the "downcheck" which makes me unable to recommend the 8400. There is also the delay in the electronic viewfinder to deal with. The combination of shutter and viewfinder lag make it absolutely impossible to capture an image, the precise composition of which lasts only a split-second. I have taken many good pictures of people working, "action" shots and the like, but it was only by taking large numbers of images of any given activity and then retaining the one or two that said what I intended that I achieved my purpose. Essentially, my shooting eye (which is pretty damned good) had nothing to with it. It's like a soldier trying to kill an enemy with a machine-gun---if he fires enough rounds, one of them is going to hit the other guy. Marksmanship has nothing to do with it. Same-same shooting with electronic viewfinders and shutter lag. If you shoot enough images, statistically you're probably going to get a good one. But it's not a very good way to do things. So if you're looking to capture what Henri Cartier-Bresson (I'm not sure I've spelled his name correctly) so artfully described as "The Decisive Moment," look at a digital single-lens reflexes, or wait for improvements in digicams.

My Best Buy of the Year!
This camera proved to perform better than I expected. Easy to operate, yet has so many bells and whistles. There are several tools and capabilities that come with this camera, it is very important to read the manual in its entirety in order to maximize the benefits. The basics stuff on it is so good it might deceive you into thinking you got it all. Its wide angle lens coupled with high resolution is an excellent solution for photographing my artwork for further work on my computer or for reproductions/printing.

super wide angle fixed lense SLR
Awsome wide angle camera that is serving my purposes just fine. I needed a wide angle camera because I did not want to have to change lenses all of the time. Also needed something that is light weight too because I have MS and can't handle heavy cameras. The pictures are better than film! I am very pleased with this camera. I have no idea why Nikon stopped production of such a fine camera but they need to bring it back as far as I'm concerned. The price is right and my experience with the seller was excellant! Shipping was super fast too. I highly reccomend the seller....pcmonde via Amazon.com

Forget it!
I bought this camera because I own other film Nikons, and unlike other cameras in its category, this one has a glass lens. What a mistake! First, the camera uses up batteries like crazy. You also have to tell it what sort of batteries you're using (alkalines, rechargeables or lithium). I've never seen the number of pics the instruction manual says I can take with one set of new batteries, close to 50 is my record. Carrying an extra or two extra sets of batteries is a must. It takes a very long time to focus, and when the camera is done doing that, the shot is no longer there. I've lost plenty of shots of my kids because of this. The flash takes an eternity to recharge, which means more lost shots or impatient people just waiting for your camera to recharge the flash, while the owners of Panasonics and Canons are done taking theirs. As packed as this camera is with features (panorama view, red eye reduction, architecture setting, portraits, sports mode, the whole works), it's focus delay alone makes all of them useless. I'm returning to my film Nikons.

Beware
I gave this camera one star because it worked perfect until the store warranty ran out. Then the lens stuck (on this mint condition camera). I did a google search for "coolpix lens stuck error" and realized that I will have to buy a different brand. I would recommend searching Google before purchasing any Coolpix camera.
Rating :
Does Anyone Read The Manual?
Yes... this camera is not perfect but it can take GORGEOUS pictures if you just read the manual. I too personally miss and dislike the fact that there is no ISO setting but, like other manufacturers, these settings have been created in the consumer icon driven menu. There is a reason why there are over 2 dozen different modes to shoot pictures with to address the needs of most situations. It has a "sports" setting which will allow you to take pictures of objects in motion and even get a quasi "film" capture where the shutter will shoot rapid pictures in succession of 16 frames (fit into 7MP setting if you have it.) It doesn't work perfectly all the time but it usually does. Most of my pictures are gorgeous and all my friends say so.
Regarding the battery life - these people are either not charging their batteries or are not bright enough to own a camera. I could EASILY squeeze out 100 pictures of my 2 batteries and usually more. These claims about 40 pictures and then it conks out - ridiculous. I don't believe many of these reviews any more and wonder if people are just plain vacuous or they have another camera from another brand so the reviews are mindless bashing.
Regarding the autofocus, almost all of these cameras don't focus quickly. I had a Minolta which was the same. Get an SLR if you don't want to miss your quick baby shots. With an autofocus you'll win some but will also be frustrated for quick shots.
For general purpose use, this camera is very good. It's small, uses double AA standard size batteries (none of those non-standard expensive Canon brand), standard SD card (no expensive proprietary Sony memory sticks) and is easy to hold in your hand. This camera is fantastic if you just learn how to use it. The 7MP photos enable you to blow up the detail in pictures which is rather remarkable. Like any camera, it's not perfect but at the $300 I got it for it's really been fantastic. My next will probably be an SLR and at least I know and have read about what I'm getting for my money.

Don't Buy a Nikon
This camera was great when I first got it. Shortly thereafter, it started having a "Lens Error" when I would try to turn it on. I have always been very careful with this camera, but I now get the error every other time I try to use it. Apparently this is a big problem with many different Nikon cameras - even higher end ones. It is very frustrating. I tried to contact Nikon to get this problem fixed when the camera was still under warranty, but never got a response from them.

Terrible photo quality
My friends with 3.0 mp cameras get better pictures.
Really grainy No vibrant colors Pictures often come out unclear (shakes a lot)
Pros... lots of features but a camera is for taking pictures and this takes crappy pictures. Camera looks cool, big screen.
I'd say don't buy, you can find something better.

Great photos but EXTREMELY SLOW taking them!
First the plus side: The camera is slim, lightweight, well constructed flash guide is good too, but not as good as the s50 for some reason, large LCD screen is top notch.
Now for the negatives: Absolutely the SLOWEST point and shoot camera at night that I've used since the 90's! During the day it is not so noticeable, but at night you press the button down, the orange glow lights up peoples smiling faces than nothing, sometimes it takes a painstaking 10 seconds to take one shot at night! while other times at it's best it takes 3-4 seconds... still too long for any modern point and shoot. I think that Nikon, a leader in camera innovation should be embarrassed to have their name on the front of this camera. Buy a Casio or Cannon instead they are both slim and take much faster photos!

Great Camera. Very pleased with it. Only concern is the delay after taking a picture and trying to review it immediately. I would've liked to know the specific features of the camera before perchasing it, such as if there were specific settings for certain conditions (action, soft, indoor, outdoor/bright, etc.) Other than that, I am satisfied with this camera.

Great Camera, would recommend
This is the first Nikon I have ever owned, and I am happy to say that I am impressed. I had a Sony cybershot DSC-1, and I used to think the pictures on that were great until I got this camera.
My situation was I brought my Sony to Florida and on the 2nd day, something happened, and the lense went out of focus. Went o some of the "same day repair" places down there to find out that it would be a min of $40 to look at it, and that situation would probably cost a min of $250.
At that point I started looking at what these shops had to offer and I came across this camera. I must admit at first I wanted to ignore it, thinking it was all hype over the great lens, and the wireless ability, but the more I looked at it, and thought about it, I started to get into it, and I will say the pictures it took after we bought it, were amazing.
I have some of the most clear pictures in the parks then I would have ever thought I would get. I would say this is probably the best purchase I have ever made, and even though I paid a little more for the camera then is posted here on amazon, I realize I was in a tourist trap, and he also threw in a 1gig high speed SD card for free...

Not The best Camera
Love it when it works, had to send it in twice already for repair. Would not buy a small Nikon again, love my SLR though from Nikon. You get what you pay for.

Some excitement, some surprises!
Bought this as a present for my wife... works fine as a basic camera with low res video recording as well.
Love the following: 1. Size of the display screen - Ahhmazing! 2. handy - small enough to fit comfortably in pockets/ handbags 3. Simple to use.
Some surprises and disappointments were 1. Never could get the Wi-fi to work 2. Flash pictures taken at night have some white spots - I believe it could be due to the fact that the flash is too close to the lens. 3. While taking videos, the powerful microphone also records the noise of the lens focussing, which can be annoying if shooting in a quiet place without too much ambient noise. 4. Because there is no viewfinder, shooting in bright sunlight is a challenge - or an act of faith - you just have to trust that the camera will get what you want - but cant see in the bright light!
Will not highly recommend.
Enjoy!

Nice overall, but blurry with poor light, and wifi annoying to use
Pretty nice overall. Great screen! Good video capability! Works with all Windows, Mac, & Linux just fine via USB. The wifi is annoying to use on the camera, and also is only with Windows I think.
Taking pictures in the evening tends to have blurry results (often I am too close or too far for the flash to be much use.). Also, the flash is somewhat overly "hard" (rather than soft), so I don't really like how the pictures look with flash.
I wish it was easier to switch between video and photo modes.
Rating :
Does not perform as priced
I paid a premium for wifi, which has never worked. The software required is buggy and poorly supported. When my Mac crashed while installing the software, the support person (who was not easily understandable) told me to reset my router. Support was a joke. The pictures quality has left me disappointed. I won't be buying another Nikon point and shoot.

Questions & Answers
Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are:
Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor
Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D
Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models?
Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT?
Thanks.
Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.
Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm
Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.
As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT.
Hope this helps.

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?
this is my camera i needa better lens that zooms in ad out more than the 18-55 lens!!
Megapixels: 6.1 Megapixels
Optical Zoom: 3 X
Lens System Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm lens
LCD Screen Size: 2.5 in
Recording Method SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital (SD) Card
Camera Type Digital camera - SLR
Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need.

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?

Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine.
Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?
Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question.
Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.
Answer:
yes and no
99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?
Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).
