Warranty of no use
Bought this for my grandson at Christmas 2007. It was used 3 times then we got an error message of "lens err msg". Contacted Nikon and they indicated that it was still under warranty, sent it in.
Today I got an invoice for the repairs of $99.50. They claimed that it was dropped and the lens was dented. Pardon me how do you dent a lens? Called Nikon and they did not change their minds. Needless to say I refused to pay for the repairs which were $.50 higher then cost of camera. Checked with my son and their rules were that the grandson did not get the camera unless they were around and that it had not been dropped.
The camera's problem was that the lens cover would not open, so no pictures.
I also have a Nikon that I bought several years ago that also quit working but after above camera. Nikon indicated that the cost of repairs was 500-600 dollars.
Conclusion is that Nikon has bad products and a miserable repair service. Do not buy unless you like flushing your money down the toilet.

Shame on Nikon
I don't understand why Nikon would put their name on this atrocity. This camera has an eternal shutter lag - any moving subject is long gone before the actual picture is taken. It also takes forever to power up. The pictures are dark, blurry, and below what even the most casual photographer should accept.
I bought this camera because I needed something compact and relatively inexpensive for a vacation and I regret it. It's a total waste of money. If you are looking for something cheap, you would be better of with a disposable Camera than this.

poor image quality
Image quality was very disappointing. Images are like the ones you get from those old disposable film cameras. Don't waste your money on this camera.

Piece of Junk
Thought this looked like a nice little camera for my teenager, except it broke after 2 months-just stopped in the middle of filming. 'Lens error'-covered under warranty. After my expense of shipping it back, and over 2 months of waiting, the camera breaks in 24 hours, after taking less than 10 pictures-lens error. Now I get to ship this piece of junk back again, for another 2 months.

BEST point and shoot camera you can buy
This cammera takes AMAZINGLY clear photos, I have a L14, L16 and L18 i just recently bought as a gift for a close friend. These cameras are incredible on various levels.
FIrst off, the picture quality is razor sharp, can see fine hairs on someones face when focused.
The video quality and sound is also incredible, its like having a mini DV camcorder ...or at least very close to it. The video is silky smooth at 30fps (feels like 60) nothing choppy about it at all. Not very grainy either pretty sharp video and the sound is crisp and vibrant.
I usually use this to document videos of me singing and what not, my voice comes through clear as a bell with no sound distortion even on high notes. great for gettign entire conversations within a video.
last but not least is the batteries..usues standard AA batteries for changing on the go, no more worrying about rechargable batteries to replace in a few years, standard AAs are the most convieniant feature in a modern Digital camera.
for perfect point and shoot situations, vacations every day use...this camera cannot be beat.

Too Small
Quality and features are fine, but camera is probably too small for you if you have large hands. If I use two hands I am fighting to keep my fingers out of my shots. Because of the shape and weight distrubution I find it difficult to shoot with one hand. I have a much larger camera (Canon S1 IS) that I often use one-handed with no issues.
To be fair, this criticism certainly applies to lots of super small digital cams. The S3 seems even worse than many others to me though. Be sure to at least handle one before you buy.

Aggravating!
I initially loved this camera. I don't use my camera that much, but when I do, I expect it to work. I charged the battery the night before I left for a vacation. The next day I took a few pictures and then realized that the battery was almost dead. I hadn't even used the camera but for a total of about five minutes since I last charged it! It was not exposed to any extreme temperatures that would mess up the battery, either. Also, when I try to review my pictures, about 80% of the time, the camera says that it cannot read the card. I have to take out the memory card and put it back in. (even then it doesn't read it sometimes.) If this camera won't even work half of the time, what's the point in bothering to carry it with me?

These cameras are defective within 1-2 years
I had the Nikon Coolpix S3 for about 14 months (of course the warranty ended after 12), and the screen went black all of a sudden. You can still view old pictures, but all new pictures come out completely black. This is apparently a VERY common problem with Nikons, particularly this model. They have a service advisory for several other Coolpix models to fix this same problem, but not for the S3-S6 models - and Nikon will charge you a significant amount of money to fix it. DO NOT get suckered into buying this camera, or any Nikon for that matter - I was extrememly disappointed with the camera, but especially with their service.

it can happen to you
Before buying this camera I read all the reviews posted. Most people were satisfied with this product, but a few complained that after a period of time the screen went black and the camera was unable to take photos. I thought that this would never happen to me and bought it anyway. Sure enough durring a fishing trip when I wanted to take photos of the lunkers I was catching the screen went black. I almost threw it in the river. Now I'm careful with my things, especialy sesitive camera equipment, so this was of no fault of my own. Spare yourself the frustration and buy a different camera.

Best design in a digital camera to date.
This is one of the finest digital cameras that has been sold. Currently Nikon may have "more powerful" but overall less appealing devices out. Two of the 4500's strongest points include the totally enclosed lens system and the swivel design. Both of which were changed in more recent designs by Nikon. Another superb feature includes the macro ability - you can get within 0.8 inches of a subject. This is fantastic for nature photography.
I currently have two of these units. The first 4500 had over 55,000 shots on it before any problems appeared. The second was purchased as a backup while the first was being repaired by Nikon. The only real negative that I have encountered would be Nikon's outrageous repair costs. The zoom button gave out after 55,000 shots (this is heavym mostly outdoor use and it's failure is not a complaint). Nikon wanted $230+ to repair/replace this switch. Considering the camera was only $400 new this was highway robbery! They also wanted an additional $150.00 to re-adhere the rubber finger grip to the camera body!!!!! Such unrealistic repair costs must be to get the user to buy a new camera but only leaves a very bad taste for Nikon's service department instead.
If you can still pick one of these up new or in like-new condition I strongly reccomend it, as there simply has not been a newer model that can do all this unit is capable of.

JUNK
Just after the one year warranty and I turn on the camera to hear loud clicking noises. Have to take the battery out to shut off. "SYSTEM ERROR". $200 to repair from Nikon - oh and they won't tell me what's wrong with it. I'm not the only one. My friend had the same problem, but he had it repaired in greece for $100. I've read that a number of people have had the same problem, actually some on Amazon reviews, where are they now?
Way to go Nikon. I won't be a return customer thank you.

Excellent Camera!
This is an excellent camera. One of the best features is this camera can be rotated to take picture in any angle. i.e. you can keep the camera a feet above your head and by looking at the LCD display you can take a perfect picture! This is an awesome feature!!
Rating :
Some nice features
On the good side, the swivel body is well integrated into the design (great for take picture over the head of crowds or take picture close to the ground), easy to hold (comfortable in the hand), has an optical view finder in addition to an LCD display (makes picture taking in bright sunlight a breeze), fairly rugged, lots of manual adjustments that have well behaved automatic defaults, the PC/Mac software if user friendly & many good features, optical zoom is totally internal (no lenses moving back & forth), excellent macro capability (focuses down to 2" - great for taking pictures of small items for eBay ads), wide selection of exposure times (compatible with time exposures), very good panoramic image stitching mode, very good color rendition, great optics (no perceivable optical distortion at any zoom level)
On the bad side: Poor battery life (make sure to get a couple of spare batteries, you WILL need them), fairly long time delay between pushing the shutter and taking the picture (makes taking action shots very difficult), built in flash is very limited, connection for external flash requires custom Nikon cable, poor auto-focus in low light conditions, slow lens (high f/#).

Great little camera
I've owned this camera for a long time and have have shot thousands of pictures with it. I even use it with a Kaidan panoramic mount and both the fisheye and wide angle lenses without any problems. All I can add is that it is a tough camera with lots of features and great quality.

| Editorial Review :
Nikon Coolpix 8800 is designed for the serious photographer who aspires to take the highest quality images. This is possible with the ultra high-definition 8.0 effective megapixels. The 10x optical zoom, 35-350mm focal range (35mm equivalent), targets those who also require high zoom power. Due to its large zoom range, Vibration Reduction (VR) is needed to compensate inevitable camera movements. VR automatically detects and compensates for these small camera movements that causes image blur. Thanks to the VR, you can achieve sharp and clear images when shooting in low light (shutter speeds up to 3 stops slower) or when taking handheld telephoto and macro shots. VR even works with the telephoto converter lens at 600mm (35mm equivalent). This extremely versatile camera offers a range of lens converters (Tele, Wideangle and fisheye), optical filters, speedlights, software and other accessories for even more creative flexibility. With this camera you create the photographic rules.

Good, but not worth the cost
I recently faced the "System 2 Error" many other users. Luckily, I have a three year warranty and it was fully covered and came back within 3wks of mailing (I sent it just before Christmas so it took longer).
The Pros: Excellent features Lightweight (I have small hands and cannot hold much weight) Came with a Remote control Large LCD etc...
The Cons: Expensive (I paid $700 plus $135 3yr warrantly) Slow shutter speed Slow writing to flash Has a tendency to over/undercompensate EV (so you need to play with the function quite a bit) Dreaded LENS ERROR!!!!
Overall, I am happy with my camera. I never owned and SLR and this camera is a great stepping stone for someone like me who wants something like an SLR but can't afford/doesn't know how to use one. After owning the camera two years, I will definitely keep it as my, "throw in the handbag and go" camera but if you can afford an SLR, definitely buy one.

A good camera but horribly unreliable
I loved this camera but I have had to send it back 3 times for the infamous "system error 2" design fault which plagues many of these. The repair service is slow - the camera has been in repair 50% of the year I have had it.
Rating :
MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT
My Coolpix 8800 lapsed into "system error 2" mode within weeks of getting it. After taking 3 or 4 shots the error message comes up and I have to shut it down and start it back up to take a few more shots before the error 2 message recurrs. Nikon says to try a fresh battery and different storage card...no help. Now Nikon says says send it in and we'll fix it- but don't say what it will cost... The shots I do get aren't as good as an HP camera we have that was half the price. The controls are ridiculously complex. The flash pops up and fires when shooting in bright light...the whole thing is a piece of junk. The only good shots I've gotten with it are inside shooting documents from 2 feet away...but for any outdoor complicated lighting it is unreliable... I wouldn't recommend this camera or any Nikon product to my worst enemy....Oh yeah, and they made the lens an oddball size so you have to buy overpriced Nikon filters for it.....

Exceptional and durable, too
My Nikon 8800 has traveled from the Amazon basin to the North Slope of Alaska and has taken over 100,000 photos. It has spent about a month in the hot, humid Amazon basin, a place which claimed the life of one of my past cameras. I've used it so much, I actually wore out one battery pack and had to replace it. Still, three years later the camera is functioning perfectly, just the way it did in the summer of 2004 when I bought it. This camera has been very reliable. The image stabilization is extremely helpful in taking butterfly photos, the project I'm working on with this camera. I also use it to record interesting birds, so I can look them up in a field guide at home. With the image stabilization, I truely don't need to bring binoculars. It is far lighter and easier to transport than SLR type cameras. I find this very helpful. To improve this already excellent camera, I suppose that it would benefit from a bigger LCD monitor, stronger external battery pack, and screws for a cable release. Also, in a perfect world, it would become a bit more light sensative and function better in darker conditions, or allow faster shutter speeds/greater depth of field. Maybe that science fiction type function will become possible some day, but whatever the case, I just love this camera as it is right now. It makes possible butterfly photography at resolutions and distances that were completely impossible just a few years ago.

Good photos, problem with battery door
This was a decent little camera for it's time. By today's standards it's a bit bulky for the megapixils it offers. There is a design problem with the battery cover / door. It's on the bottom corner of the camera and spring-tensioned. It is pushed down and slid it into a locked position, held by little plastic tabs. These tabs break off easly, leaving the battery door hanging partially open. The camera still works, though you may have to use your pinky to tension the battery door. When travelling we've bumped into a number of people at tourist spots with the same camera. Most have broken battery doors. I like the photos it takes, but this flaw that would prevent me from buying it again.

Long Time Owner
OK, I have had this little camera for two years now and here is what I think:
Pros: Good shooting Modes Quality Prints Plenty of Options for Pictures Fast on and Off Good Focus Not Battery powered (yes, this is a pro, cameras EAT batteries)
Cons: View screen is too small to be very useful Video quality not great Zoom a little underpowered Menus a bit confusing (even after a couple of years)
Overall: A good first camera. When a twelve-year-old begs for a digital camera, this is the one for them! Not for experienced photographers, but it does well enough for day-to-day uses. Great value for the money!

Mediocre Digital Camera
I've had this camera for about a year. I normally shoot with a 35mm SLR, but purchased this camera for informal, point-and-shoot gatherings and occasions when I didn't want to hassle with a large camera.
Benefits: 1. It's extremely small and handy to carry around in your pocket or purse for birthday parties and outings. 2. It's durable and has survived repeated droppings. 3. The pictures are sharp and crisp when properly focused.
Drawbacks: 1. The flash is blindingly bright. Whenever you use it, prepare for your subjects to look like they've got a 2,000-watt white spotlight shining on them like crime scene photographs, and the background will fade to nearly black. When used in indoor settings like restaurants, the brightness of the flash is just ridiculous. Think "mug shot." 2. Camera shake/blur. When the flash is not in use and you're indoors, it's very difficult to get a clear shot with this camera. The problem with the flash has led me to try to avoid using it altogether so that I can get better color and even light, which means I've had a problem with camera shake/blur in low-light conditions. For example, with the flash turned off it takes multiple attempts to get a blur-free shot in my living room, even in the middle of the day with the window blinds open. 4. The removeable battery. You have to take the battery out of the camera to charge it, by inserting it in the battery charger that is provided. This seems like an unnecessary extra step to me. Why not just design it so that you can plug the charger directly into the camera like other digital point-and-shoots?
For casual photographer who will be shooting mostly outdoors and desires a very portable, durable camera, this camera will work for you.
But if you will be shooting mainly indoors or with flash, avoid this camera.
I recommend the Kodak EasyShare series as a good alternative. I don't own one, but I've been impressed with the quality of low-light pictures (indoors) that these cameras produce.

Great Camera but problem with the battery door.
I love this camera, I have owned it for about two years when it first came out. The pictures are of great quality, and have used some of the special modes and have obtained professional photography results, even though I am just an amateur. The red-eye fix is very helpful. The external metal casing has been durable and scratch resistant.
My only drawback is the battery door. A little tab broke off and I have had to tape the lid to the bottom of the camera. The camera works fine, but it just does not feel or look fine now. Which has me now looking for a new one!

Questions & Answers
Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?
Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?
Answer:
Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine.
Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.
Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons!
I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself).
Thanks!
Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) .
I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks
Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question.
Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are:
Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor
Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D
Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models?
Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT?
Thanks.
Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.
Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm
Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.
As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT.
Hope this helps.

Question : I have Nikon coolpix digital camara. Many times red eye coming in photos. How to remove red eye from camera?
Camera Model: Nikon Coolpix S4 digital Camera. I checked the brocedure given along with camera, but I didn't find any option in camera to remove red eye. Please help.
Answer:
The Coolpix S4 has a flash setting for red-eye reduction. In the FLASH Mode Menu, it is the symbol with the lightning bolt and little eye. This setting will give a series of low intensity pre-flashes and the camera also does some in camera processing to remove red-eye before it stores the image.
If this isn't working, try one of the other flash settings or remove it with any good photo manipulation software on your PC.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?
Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.
Answer:
yes and no
99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : Do I need a special flash for my Nikon Digital Camera?
I need a larger flash for my Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital Camera with a hot shoe, and would love to be able to use the trusty Vivitar Thrysistor 283 that worked so well with my old SLR, but the Nikon manual warns that flashes not specifically made for Nikon Digital Cameras may damage the camera through some kind of electronic feedback. Are they just trying to sell me a $300 flash unit, or is this a valid concern?
Answer:
Yup, it is possible for an old flash to fry a camera due to the trigger voltages. You can check this site for more info on that http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html. Cross reference your flash against the table there.
In any case, using an older flash would probably mean a loss of i-ttl (for nikon) or e-ttl (for canon). You would need to use auto/manual flash then. In addition, the camera may also act funny (e.g. my old metz on my canon 20D will always give me a 1/200 f5.6 on program mode. I have to use it in manual mode instead.
