hidden costs

Where I am happy with the camera itself....The actual cost, once I received the final total, I am not happy with. The purchase cost was $257., after shipping, exchange rate, AND customs fees(which were not disclosed at the time of purchase, and delayed the shipping) the actual total was $359.48. I could have purchased the camera locally for $325. What was the point of buying from Amazon??????

Amazing camera

I have owned this camera for a little over two years and have taken almost 3,000 pictures with it. Everything has been excellent and this camera is built like a rock. It has taken a few drops right on the lens and been fine.

This past weekend I accidentally left it on the bumper of my truck and it fell off while driving about 20mph and the car behind me ran straight over it with their tire. It didn't make it this time, but amazingly it is still all in one piece and looking at it you half expect it to turn on because there is so little damage, the memory card and battery still slide in and out just fine.

I'm about to order another one because these are so reliable and tough.

Nikon CoolPix

Not being a digital camera kind of person, this is easy to use, and takes very good photos. However, I don't like not having a viewfinder. Using only the screen drains batteries quickly. Constantly turning it off to preserve battery life results in not having it ready when needed.

Using this camera in the sun is difficult if you are wearing polarized sunglasses.

The selector button moves too easily from setting to setting, resulting in the camera possibly not ready to use once turned back on if it has been put into a pocket.

Handy, All-Around Great Little Camera

I've owned my P3 for over a year, and it's going strong. I have several cameras in my bag, including a pricey DSLR, but this is the one I really count on when I'm in a hurry and don't need to mess with a lot of settings.

The Wi-fi capability is a little gimmicky. Download time is very slow--and only a little faster with the supplied USB connect. A 2.0 card reader solves that little snag.

I've used this camera in a broad spectrum of conditions and rarely find that it can't keep up. It has given me pleasing and consistently great images for online auctions, candid snapshots of the grandkids, pet photos, landscapes and macro work.

The build is sturdy and good-looking. The camera is small enough to slip in a shirt pocket or purse.

While full manual control is not a feature of this camera, there's still plenty of tweaking room allowed in the various modes. I find the ISO and WB places on the dial especially handy and am very glad they aren't buried down in a menu somewhere.

The LCD is nice and bright, and image review is a snap.

Full Auto works great. But that's not all. If you want in-camera noise reduction, you've got it. In-camera sharpening, you've got it. The menu is extensive for tailoring the various scene presets. There is an aperture mode for greater control. Metering modes are also selectable--matrix, spot focus, and center weighted average get used a lot.

It's last year's model, but it has everything you need this year. Vibration reduction, consistently snappy images with great dynamic range, 8MP resolution for large prints and a take-anywhere size.

All for a very affordable price!

3700 picture quality

I have owned a 3700 for several months. It takes sharp pictures,is a delight to carry. Everything about it is
first class..except......it takes pictures that are always very "cool". (Noticeably bluish). If you like faces with blueish skin,or scenics on the blue side even with lots of sunlight, OK. If you don't...Adobe and a touch of less blue and a touch of more red will produce pictures with color as good as any from Sony or Canon. (we have or have had both)
It is the 2nd Nikon camera I have owned and EACH of them (took)takes VERY cool pictures, ie pictures with a blue cast,

A non critical user wont worry about it. (But "they" dont worry about pictures from $5.00 throw-away cameras) Still,it is a good buy, and reliable. Good battery life.
However, the very few pix that you really love (its always very few, right?) to save and print..if you are at all critical, probably should be color corrected.
Note that the 3700's resolution (sharpness)is a trifle less than that of a Sony P150 or Sony V1 or Canon S50 (all owned by one relative or another) But the sharness differences are so minute that one is not aware of any differences if viewing prints from NORMAL viewing distance. The "noisy" night pictures also are just fine when you dont use a microscope but wiew on
a wall or in a photo album.
The bottom line to me is that camera sharpness should not be the number one all quality consideration.
Remember that that pleasing or poor color is obvious from any viewing distance whether a still picture or movie and that
some movies and peoplestill portraits are shot with diffusion to soften the "look", deliberately, thus dismissing sharpness in favor of creativity.
So the question of proper color always remains. Check that first, then sharpness second.

Made for Goobers like me

If I can screw something up I usually will. This camera compensates for my total lack of ability to take a decent pic. For some reason 98% of the pics I have taken have come out absolutely stunning. When I took it to a family reunion and started taking pics side by side(with my family members using their ultra mega-pixel, high speed dig cams with all the bells and whistles only found on the space shuttle and other advanced technological inventions)it became readily apparent that my pics were greatly superior to the ones they were producing. It was worth the price of the camera to watch them fiddle with knobs, switches and dials on their cams to try and replicate (let alone exceed) the quality of the pics my 3700 was producing. Not wanting to acknowledge that I had a superior product they blamed everything from atmospheric pressure to the depleted ozone layer for their inferior pics. To make a long story short within a week they had sold their overpriced, over rated dig cams and purchased 3700's Nuff said.

Great light weight camera

I bought this camera about 10 months back and am loving it since then. I bought this for my wife as I own a Sony DSC-V1 (another great one) and she wanted a light & small camera. I'm very pleased by the performance.

I have taken about 2500 great pictures in all modes even in dark using manual mode. The movie mode is swift but only does Apple Quicktime. Other formats would be a plus.

Great Camera!

Better than higher megapixel cameras

I've owned this camera for the past four years, and I must say that even though I own another camera with a higher megapixel, this one takes better pictures! I owned a 5 megapixel camera and a 10 megapixel camera with different brands and I must say that this little camera beats them both.

One drawback: Taking pictures at night or indoors with a lot of lights can be a hassle since you will have to fiddle with the controls and settings before getting things right. Also when you are recording movies, there is this ticking sound that goes with it.

This is a great camera for beginners who just want to point and shoot.

good camera good buy

I find the camera to be of excellent quality. It will serve my need for many years. The only problems: Installation disc is CDI...will not run on my computer. Had to select programs from Nikon to download and don't get all the functions I want. The memory card is old technology and the 10 megs they supply is a joke. I've ordered a 2 gig card so I can take more than 6 pictures at once.

Not a Camera for the Faint of Heart

I've owned this camera since it first came out in 2003, and since I'm not a qualified camera "expert", I want to give you my thoughts on this camera. I'm giving this review as someone who is relatively new to digital "point-and-shoot" photography...

First and foremost, study the Nikon manual. Then study it some more. The controls are overwhelming at times, provided you are a neo-phyte like myself.

Second, for exterior photography on the normal setting, this camera cannot be beat! It is exceptional. The images are clear, clean, and colors are spectacular. I've photographed NASCAR at the California Speedway, and other events like the Coronado Speed Festival, etc., and the outdoor shots look great. Now for the indoor-shooting...

This is where the camera gets its two star rating from me. I do not know how to select the manual control on-the-fly. I've tried to set up controls to shoot indoor photography, but I don't have weeks and weeks to learn the settings. I've photographed people who are standing completely still, slightly moving (my kids), low lighting conditions, fair lighting conditions, and still cannot get proper images to come out.

The indoor photography is pitiful, as the colors are yellowish, muted, and nearly 90% of the time, the images are all blurred. The pop-up light is only good for 5-8 feet at best. I took some special shots of people who were stationary, and it appeared that the photo looked "good" when zooming in and out with the control. When I downloaded the CF card to my PC, the images were always blurred and the colors were way off.

Mind you, I'm not a camera professional like many of the reviewers here, but rather I'm just an average "Joe" who would like to have decent indoor pictures that looked natural and were not blurred.

I would sell this thing on Ebay if I could get more than a few hundred dollars for it, but I've already invested over $1,200 for the snap-on lens adaptors and protective lens cover which keeps the retractable lens from getting damaged. I bought this from a company in Canada back in 2003.

All in all I'm happy with the exterior photos, but am very, very, disappointed with indoor pictures. I guess this thing requires a lot of tweaking, and many, many hours of studying the little manual that Nikon has provided.

I would stay away from this and save your money for the newer Digital SLR's. I've had this for over four years now, and just wanted to write a review based on my experiences with this camera.

Just a thought...

Most unreliable piece of equipment ever purchased

I too fell into the "if it is Nikon" trap. Afer reading many reviews on the camera, I purchased two as my first step into digital photography. One for my wife and one for myself. We probalby have less than 1000 pictures on both combined. My wife's has been sent in for repairs twice for the zoom lens not working. I got mine out this morning to take a picture and the view finder and screen are both blank. I'm not even going to wast 10 bucks to ship it back again for repair. I still have several months left on the extended warrenty but it just not worth the effort.

And... everything about taking extremely long time to focus is true. This is the deciding reason for not having it fixed. Even when it is working, it is a very aggrevating camera. The number of good shots you miss while it tries to focus is unbelievable.

Both of my Coolpix 5700 were pieces of junk. It was a very expensive lesson about Nikon quality. With two cameras, additional lenses, battery packs, 1G memory disks, and extended warrenties, about 3K total.

Since I've only owned two Nikons, I can truthfully say when the topic comes up, "Every Nikon I owned was a piece of junk. I'll never buy another one.".

Good Camera for advanced amatuer.

I bought this camera after many years of owning a Nikon FM-2.
This camera and those like it fill a gap for those who do not want to invest in a Digital SLR system. Yet have some control over the camera.

If you can get by with 5 Megapixles this is a good camera.

If you can, buy the filter set and the adapter because it not only protects the lens but also protects the zoom mechanism.

Buy or find the MB-E5700 battery pack which letts you use 6 AA Lithium batteries or rechargables. This gives you the best power option. (Turn off the continuous Autofocus and you will save power galore!)

No serious photographer uses on camera flash. You can turn off the flash on the camera and get a Speedlight.

The camera takes a while to master if you want to use all the features.
The metering for exposures is near perfect. The problems in low light can be overcome with some simple steps.

Set the focus on infinity for long distances shots.

Use the focus lock to lock onto something with contrast in low light situations. This is the camera's Achilles heel.

The Camera in not a pro camera and will take time to shoot download hi-res photos to memory.

I have been very pleased with camera and the results. I would like to have a Nikon D200 but do not want to spend that much.

Great Optics, Great support from Nikon

The 5 Megapixel Nikon 5700 has been around a while, and people continue to love it and hate it. The optics are why you buy Nikon, and this is one sharp lens. It's complicated to operate if you want to do manual settings (M, A, S), but the Program mode will suffice for most people. It will shoot in RAW mode, unusual for a consumer camera. That gives you a lot of flexibility in adjusting the image. If you're not willing to read the manual though, this may not be the camera for you. Sort of like driving a manual transmission, it's so easy once you know how but you have to give it the effort to practice.

Nikon supports this camera with repair if you have problems, flat rate is reasonable (go to Nikon USA direct, dealers mark up). One common problem is the CCD failing, due to a Sony image sensor that a lot of camera makers used. Free repairs in about 2 weeks, but it's annoying. After that fix, this is a solid camera. I like mine, and shoot a lot of quick shots with it.

Editorial Review :

Nikon Coolpix 4800 Digital Camera is a statement of simplicity for ease-of-use with sophistication for the more serious photographer. It places a clearer emphasis on sharp optics than most cameras in this class. As a compact camera, it has an astounding 8.3x Zoom-Nikkor; 6.0-50mm (35mm format equivalent to 36-300mm) with Digital zoom up to 4x. Up to 4 megapixel effective resolution for still pictures (to 2288 x 1712) and up to VGA (640x480) resolution for movies, make this camera a perfect match for all your needs. It has 13.5MB built-in memory for immediate out-of-the-box use but we advise buying a SecureDigital SD memory card for greater flexibility. PictBridge is an important feature that lets you print images on a PictBridge compatible printer without a PC or Mac computer. Of course, there's a USB port for easy connectivity with a computer should you desire. With autofocus and autoexposure modes, this camera makes taking pictures fun and exciting yet it also leaves room for the creative individual. Coolpix 4800 makes your choice really simple. Lots of options and easy to use

I've played with this camera a few weeks now and the zoom is great. It has various scenes to choose from to help you take pictures in different settings, lighting, scenery, etc. and it works very nicely. I haven't installed the software, but loading pictures to my computer is very easy. The battery seems a little high maintenance, but its just a matter of not storing it inside the camera. Overall, its a nice, easy to use camera for snapshots for novices, and the extra zoom makes it all the better.

Automatic lens cover problems galore!

My ownership of this camera was brief. First, you must know I love Nikon. I have 2 other Nikons--an old Cooplix 2200 and a Coolpix 5700. They have wonderful lenses and give great pix. I thought my experience with this model would be similar. NOT!~ From picture numero uno, the lens cover refused to completely open and cooperate. I got pictures, yes, but they had lazy black eyelids on each corner where the lens cover had not opened up to clear the lens. What a dissappointment! I traded it in for a Canon A520 and am happy with that camera. I suppose it is just what it is. If I'd saved and spent a lot more money on a D50 or Rebel, who knows? Anyway, that is my sad tale with the Nikon 4800.

GOOD MONEY SPENT.. FINALLY!

I had a HP that took okay pictures but close-ups were blurry. I tried the Kodak Easy Share. The pictures were "okay" but it took a very long time to transfer them. Close ups were a little blurry.
Deceiding that Kodak was not a wise choice. It was then I recalled the best photos I have ever taken were with a Nikon Pictures that looked as good and some even better than
postcards. Seriously! I ventured out one more time to buy a digital camera I would try one more. Thankfully, Nikon stopped my camera blues. This camera has alot of great features. It works great on small items like jewelry. I am very happy with
the quality. Although it is a little bigger than the other two
digitals I bought, I do not mind. If you are not concerned with quality and want a camera that will fit in your pocket then buy HP or Kodak. Do you want Sharp vibrant pictures? If, yes.
Here is your answer.

amateur nature photographer

I do a lot of hiking and was looking for something lighter weight than an SLR that would still allow me to take telephoto and macro shots. This camera is the smallest and lightest one I found that has a 8X or higher zoom. I have taken very sharp telephoto photos of wildlife and macro shots of flowers that people thought were taken with a high-end camera. This camera does well with conventional landscapes and indoor flash snapshots. The menu controls are very easy to use and there are enough presets for special situations to compensate for lack of manual controls. However, if you mostly take snapshots that do not require 8X zoom, I would look to other models. While, this is small for a long zoom camera, it is still too big to easily fit in a pocket or purse.

The primary flaws of this camera: It is only 4 megapixels. The battery charger failed and had to be replaced about 18 months after purchase (This was particularly a problem since the camera takes a propietary battery rather than AAs). The delay in taking pictures is longer than many competitors. Occasionally the lens cap does not open completely (easily fixed if you notice it before snapping your picture).

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's. Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?

Answer:
Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine. Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : I have Nikon coolpix digital camara. Many times red eye coming in photos. How to remove red eye from camera?
Camera Model: Nikon Coolpix S4 digital Camera. I checked the brocedure given along with camera, but I didn't find any option in camera to remove red eye. Please help.

Answer:
The Coolpix S4 has a flash setting for red-eye reduction. In the FLASH Mode Menu, it is the symbol with the lightning bolt and little eye. This setting will give a series of low intensity pre-flashes and the camera also does some in camera processing to remove red-eye before it stores the image. If this isn't working, try one of the other flash settings or remove it with any good photo manipulation software on your PC.

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are: Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT? Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused. Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm. As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons! I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself). Thanks!

Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?
this is my camera i needa better lens that zooms in ad out more than the 18-55 lens!! Megapixels: 6.1 Megapixels Optical Zoom: 3 X Lens System Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm lens LCD Screen Size: 2.5 in Recording Method SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital (SD) Card Camera Type Digital camera - SLR

Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408518-USA/Nikon_2159_18_200mm_f_3_5_5_6G_ED_IF_AF_S.html
