It was a great first Digital Camera for me the dentist
Just got home today after looking at new digital cameras, all of the sudden my Nikon 995 seems HUGE. But over the past 18 months it has been flawless, and made me switch completely to digital for family and some work (dentist). I thought it interesting that someone noted that red eye was not as much of a problem as earlier Nikon digital cameras - I thought it was a big problem, and it would be my one complaint about the 995. The 3.2MP was more then sufficient, I recently just got an 8 X 10" from an online printing surface, and it is beautiful. Printing on my HP 7550 I was able to get excellent 5" X 7"'s, but I guess this isn't a printer review. The menus are easy, and downloading via USB was a snap. I would rate the software as very average. I still don't understand why WIN XP can't just recognize the camera for direct downloading instead of going through a third party soft ware. I have now attached the camera to a clinical microscope and will continue to use it. And I don't think I will buy anything more then a 4MP camera for my next hobby camera. Of course, I just purchased the 6.2 Canon Rebel today for work and serious photograpy, but that's another story...

Excellent handy camera
I bought the 995 almost 4 and a half years ago and have not been disappointed. My only regret is not being able to find a replacement. I have taken well over 20 000 pictures, mostly work (Hand surgeon), have dropped it a few times, (perhaps that's why its not working as well now) and LOVE IT! Giving me some trouble now, but I would gladly buy a similar new one.
The macro mode is great. The ring flash that comes with it allows very accurate colour reproduction. Only trouble as someone else mentioned earlier is the start-up time. But this camera is 5 years old... give it a break!

THE BEST CAMERA EVER
I have been using the 995 since 2001, I am a medical Radiologist, in my field everybody needs a high quality digital camara aid for storing cases. The results using my Nikon 995 compared to other cameras (from my collegues) in the same range are breath taking!! You a get a great Nikor lens, with a very convenient Makro and so many manual options that makes it impossible to need another camera. Plus you can have add-ons that the others don't have like the slide reproducer that lets you digitize all the old slides!!. I have literaly taken thousands of pictures and works as good as new. The 995 lets you take charge when you need to, but also has the automatic ¨SNAPPY¨ mode for easier shots. It's a must have. After comparing I can't imagine 3 years later why would I want to change it for another.

The 'Coolestpix 995' and the 'Coolestpix 5000'
I struggled for years with my film cameras to take good close-up photos, but was never able to get the colors right. In February, 2002, I spent $[...] on a Coolpix 995. It was a whole new world!
The purpose of this camera was very specialized. I wanted it to take very close-up photos of wristwatches and pocketwatches for my website, in order to show what the watches looked like at various stages of disassembly. This camera was perfect for the job.
To take close-up photos, I adjust the ISO to 100, turn off the flash, use Aperture Priority and select the smallest aperture possible. I adjust the zoom to the midpoint, select the micro setting and the self-timer. With the camera on a tripod, I press the button. Ten seconds later, it takes the photo. The results have been the best I have ever had with any camera. The photos on the website brought me increased business and my equipment has paid for itself many times.
In 2007, I found another Coolpix 995 in a pawn shop for $[...] plus tax. They also had a Coolpix 5000 for $[...]. At those prices, I had to have them both! Then I found a terrific assortment of accessories on Amazon.com, which all arrived today. They included:
1. Nikon 8x20d lens, a TELESCOPE AND MICROSCOPE for the 995. 2. Nikon TC-E2 teleconverter (2x or 200%) for the 995. 3. Nikon WC-E63 wideangle teleconverter (63%) for the 995. 4. Nikon Cool-Light SL-1, a ring flash for micro photography with the 995. 5. Nikon UR-E6 adaptor makes it possible to use the accessories above with the Coolpix 5000 camera. 6. Nikon MB-E5000 battery pack for the Coolpix 5000.
If you buy either of these cameras, you want all the accessories above. The prices for these accessories on Amazon.com are a small fraction of what they once sold for, probably because of low demand for them now.
Having tried out a new Coolpix S1, I can compare the older to the newer. The older cameras here offer the most spectacular micro-photography, especially when using the 8x20d lens. The older cameras offer Aperture Priority and Manual settings, which are essential for micro-photography. The new Coolpix S1, however, does not have these settings, nor can it get as close to the subject as the other two cameras. However, the closeness was good enough for most of my needs, and the colors were so much better! I use my new Coolpix S1 for most of my photography now because of the better colors and because it is so much easier to use and to connect to my computer. However, I am still keeping my older cameras for special tasks. The telescope will be useful when I travel. Choices, choices.
In summary, if you plan to take very close-up photos and you need the macro features, I recommend the Coolpix 995 and the Coolpix 5000. You should also get all the accessories listed above. They are all gems.
However, if you do not plan to take very close-up photos and do not need the Aperture Priority or Manual settings, I recommend the Nikon S1, which is so small and so easy to use and such fun! When using any camera, I recommend using it on a tripod whenever possible (you will see the difference).
I hope you found this review to be informative. Good luck.

Not my favorite tool
I use this camera at work, often on occasions when I am sent on assignments I didn't know about when I went home the evening prior.
This is not my favorite camera for a number of reasons. What bothers me most is the view I receive through the viewfinder. The viewfinder is small, to begin, being only about one square inch. The views are often clouded in shades of red, gray or black, also, not what you look at with the naked eye.
Turning the camera in half, like the photo on this page, does not improve matters. I find this camera somewhat difficult to manage with controls being tiny and that abominable viewfinder constantly creating problems for me.
It does take fine pictures, however, and transferring them from the camera to a PC or other media is simply a matter of plugging in and pushing a button. So it does the job well. If only it was an equal pleasure while I was using it I could rate this better.

Do NOT buy this camera-- LENS ERROR after a few months
I bought this camera last October and this August when I was taking pictures of my toddler, all of a sudden the camera started making noises and then 'lens error' appeared on the lcd screen and the camera would no longer work. I sent it in to Nikon for a warranty repair and they said that there was evidence of sand inside. What! I take EXTREMELY good care of my camera. They would not cover the repair and were going to charge me around $100.00 plus shipping to mail it back. Now I see that this is a very common problem. I am going to look into formal complaint on Nikon. I think that Nikon has a bad product and is not honoring their warranty!!!

Buyer Beware
I purchased this Camera 6 months ago, pimarly for it's size and features. After less than 300 pictures the LCD screen puked. I sent it to Nikon, and they said it was due to a VERY HIGH impact. Well if sliding it into the INCLUDED case is high impact I guess they are right. They will NOT honor the warranty and the repair with shipping is $110.00. Keep in mind the Camera only cost $159.00 new. I own 4 other Digital Camera's (All Kodak) had one problem which they handled promptly and professionally. I was WRONG to assume I would get the same treatment from Nikon

Bad photo quality
The first thing I want from any camera is the "good photo quality". But this camera gives bad indoor photo quality, outdoor photos are okay; but you won't always go outside to take pictures. I am very disappointed with this camera and do not understand how other reviewers have given 5 star ratings. Could anyone tell me how to get better photo quality for indoor pictures from this camera?

Great Camera
I purchased the camera after Christmas. I wanted a compact camera that I could keep in my purse for something spontanious moments. My main camera is a Nikon D80 which is not something that I want to carry around all of the time. It's light and easy to keep up with. The photos are great. I can't tell much difference with my D80 pictures. The videos that I recorded turned out good but if I would have used it in better light they would have been perfect. My husband likes it so much that he took it from me so I have now ordered the Nikon S550 for me. These camera come with their own battery which last a long time. I think I have only recharged once since purchasing it.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA- Lens Error
I bought this camera December 31, 2007. I had received some money for Christmas and decided to buy a camera with it. I went shopping and after about 2 hours, I finally picked this camera. While traveling through California on a recent roadtrip, I got my camera out to take a landscape picture and I got a "Lens Error". I had this camera for less than 7 months and it broke on me. I have read other reviews and it appears this is a common problem for this make and model. I take very good care of my cameras and I usually replace them after 3+ years because of technology, not because they stop working. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!

Awesome camera for the price
This was the ultimate bang for the buck.... works great, takes good pictures. Best camera you'll find for under $100. The only letdowns: (1)The Wi-Fi turned out to be a proprietary setup that could not be easily configured (if at all) to work with a normal Linksys or D-link home network for file sharing with PC's. I gave up and used the usb cable instead. (2)Also uses a proprietary battery that runs out long before your memory card does, and of course it only comes with one battery. (3)Also uses proprietary cable connectors, so if you lose your cable, you have to $pecial order another one from Nikon (vs. other cameras that use standard mini usb and A/V cables that are interchangeable with other devices)

This is my second P2 camera. (I drown my first on at the Great Barrier Reef. Dive case leak)
I like the battery as it lasts 100s of photos on a charge. The photos come out great. I can plug it into most any TV and show my photos.
I throw it around and leave it in a hot car and it keeps working great. If I lose this one, I'll get another one just like it if the are available.

Its ok.
It has been 3 years since we bought this camera. In that time, we have used it a lot for movies and photos.
The pictures were ok but not bad for the price (3 years ago). The movie quality can be increased, so we did that and have been pretty happy. Although if not is bright light, the result is grainy.
The Wi-fi is a joke. We set it up on my husband's mac and never got it to work on the PC. I have an SD slot, so we mostly used that.
The one thing that puzzles us is that almost all of the tiny screws have disappeared. Strange.

I purchased this camera to replace one (same model) I had lost. It came with everything my original camera I purchased in the store came with, at a much lower price. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Poor Nikon support makes this one useless
Bought this because of the wireless connection. Works fine with Power PC Macs, but Nikon has and will not provide software that will work with Intel Macs.
Therefore this was the last Nikon product I ever bought.

quit after 1 year

Good product. Only problem seems to be the lens position, you have very limited place to hold it with your left hand. Improvement could have been a port to charge the battery without removing it from the camera. Photo quality is not bad, not great either. My 4 year old fuji gives better pictures in low light.

Would NOT recommend!
I bought this camera a little over a year ago in the magenta color and I loved the way it looked and it had better reviews in the past. Unfortunately, I have discovered the bright color and design of the camera are the only positive things about this camera. The LCD screen scratches easily but the functions of the camera are the worst. The red eye reduction is inconsistent, the picture quality is low for night shots even when set to the correct setting, and the camera takes very blurry pictures--even when the focusing feature is on. I have learned over time to deal with this camera and how to take more focused pictures, but this becomes a problem whenever you have group shots and someone else is taking pictures--they always come out blurry! Therefore, I do not believe this is a user-friendly camera and there are much higher quality cameras compared to this one (such as Canon) available at similar prices. I am currently looking to buy a new camera even after spending $220+ on this camera just a year ago, and I will not be purchasing another Nikon in the future.
Rating :
Pretty good for it is size and features.
I just want to start from saying that this is not $1000 or more DSLR camera so I did not expect to see high quality pictures when I first bought it. However after taking few images in full sun I was pleased with image quality taking into account small lens and price of the camera (I paid $56 for refurbished one with 90 day Nikon warranty). All pictures came out sharp with true colors. I did not see single one that was blurred. Macro worked fine too. In low light condition story is a little different. It appears that flash fires always with the same power so you need to keep approximately 5" to 6" from the subject all the time to avoid under or overexposed pictures. I got better results (in low light condition) using museum mode (BSS is on). There are lots of things I like about this camera: size, metal body, lens built inside, nice features like 4 assists modes, 15 scene modes, D-lighting, picture editing, voice recording, date imprint, color options, excellent movie modes and many, many more. Everything works as it should (I checked them all). It is easy to use without reading manual (may be to me becasue I own Coolpix 5700). I could wish only for manual mode. I read a lot of complaints about blurry pictures, noise etc. One can set ISO to low value and use tripod to get good pictures. Do not expect that tiny lens to pass enough light so camera sets low ISO and short exposure time avoiding blurry/noisy pictures. I do not think that you can show me better camera in that size and in this price. There is really nothing not to like about this camera, you just need to read manual and experiment with settings to get good results.

Question : Which Nikon digital camera do you recommend?
I want an affordable camera. $500.00 or less but I also want to be able to take good pictures, and I want to be able to control zoom and lighting. I used a borrowed manual Nikon and I really liked it.
the on i used was not digital. i went into a darkroom to do the printing myself and used film. like i said, i am looking for a digital camera. thank you.

I would second D40. I searched for nikon digital cameras, within $500 and then ranked by image quality. Nikon d40 seems to be the best bet.

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.
Answer:
yes and no
99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!
Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's.
Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR
There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?
Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : I have Nikon coolpix digital camara. Many times red eye coming in photos. How to remove red eye from camera?
Camera Model: Nikon Coolpix S4 digital Camera. I checked the brocedure given along with camera, but I didn't find any option in camera to remove red eye. Please help.
Answer:
The Coolpix S4 has a flash setting for red-eye reduction. In the FLASH Mode Menu, it is the symbol with the lightning bolt and little eye. This setting will give a series of low intensity pre-flashes and the camera also does some in camera processing to remove red-eye before it stores the image.
If this isn't working, try one of the other flash settings or remove it with any good photo manipulation software on your PC.

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons!
I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself).
Thanks!
Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) .
I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them
