Warrenty on repair

To the chase,

Good camera and I thought all was lost when ...

The camera sensor went out after 4 years or so. Nikon has a recall and will fix it if yours should go out. Screen black or as mine pink and smeary looking. Sent to Nikon fixed for free in about 3 weeks.

But anyway. just passing this on.

Search coolpix recall for more information. It was hard to find at Nikon web sight.

5400 has issues!

Check nikonusa web for coolpix service advisory. Some of the 5400 and others have
possible component failures, as many reviewers described before. My 5400 had CCD
issue (I use it very lightly) and Nikon USA repair it for free (Thank God!) But
that will make me think twice about the quality of the Nikon camera when I plan to
purchase another. In fact, I am looking for a P&S camera and for sure I won't put
Nikon's on the top of my list. Nikon 5400 will be my first and last Nikon product.

great manual mode

I've heard many negative reports about the 5400 but I am well pleased with mine mostly because of it's many modes and especially manual mode.
It's easy to operate and intuitive.

Amazing quality, love Nikon, but definitely NOT a pocket camera....

I love this camera. It had a small defect with an electronic part, but is promptly fixed by Nikon service. The only downside is the size, which I thought I wouldn't mind, but recently has become more and more cumbersome for me. I think I might sell it and by a smaller Nikon that's more pocket-sized...

If you want this camera to fail, buy it

You do not want to get any Nikon cameras from the last 4~5 years. Most of them use the SONY CCD sensor, which has been failing like crazy as of late. Of course, for the 5400, Nikon finally fessed up and decided to issue a service advisory. But the company's repair record is so spotty that I've decided never to buy a Nikon again. They tried to "fix" my sensor the 1st, and ended up breaking the control system. My camera is now in for its 3rd "redo."

Don't buy this camera unless you like non-functioning cameras and nonexistent service.

Nikon Coolpix 5200 5MP

An easy to use and carry camera for those special moments. The
quality of photos is far superior to any other Digital Camera of
the same quality. It's small and packs easily for those vacations

Awesome Camera!! Best Compact Digital Quality!

I purchased this camera over two years ago, and have never had a single problem with it! It takes professional quality photos, without the hassle and bulk of extra lens and such. I would highly recommend this camera!

just really bad pictures

After my last Nikon, which I really liked, had some problems with the zoom lens opening, I set out to find another camera. I really don't like change, so I looked for another Nikon with which I could use my rechargeable ion batteries and SD card. I chose the Nikon 5200. Bad choice. Maybe I just got a lemon? Not sure, but what I do know is that this camera takes the worst pictures. Practically impossible to get a clear, focused picture inside, and when I do get a picture that is technically focused, it just isn't very sharp. I recently took it on a beach vacation and got all my pictures back with an aura around the white things in the pictures (hair bow, sunhat, etc.). Let's see... bad inside, bad outside. Verdict? Just bad.

Awesome Pictures! After 2 years I'm on my 3rd one & Happy!

I've owned a few cameras since the digital age submerged the photo world in a sea of memory cards, megapixels and jpegs. I went from a horrible 1 MP Vivitar, to a great but really slow 4MP Minolta/Konica Camera, then to this Nikon 5200 in 2004. Initially, I was weary about buying a 5MP camera, since the technology advances and becomes cheaper within the space of a few months, but the 5200 was not the case. After the first year my first one was stolen and I decided to try out the really slim 6MP Casio Exilim s500 and I was quickly disappointed with picture quality, durabilty and start up speed, before exchanging it for my 2nd Nikon 5200. Last month after 1 year and half of consistently rough usage the battery door came loose and then stopped connecting at all. Even though the battery is still secure without the door there I wanted a new camera and was planning to upgrade to the $1700 Canon 30D, but after playing with the 30D instore, I decided I wasn't ready for that kind of commitment and realized I was genuinely happy with the Nikon 5200. I played around with newer models as well and found that the Nikon 5200 is still a top camera for taking awesome pics in a wide variety of settings and delivering sparkling prints. So I just purchased another Nikon 5200.

PROS: 1. Above all, this camera is really fast. That is my favorite feature. With other cameras I find that the start up and picture to picture speed is slow enough that you can miss many great picture opportunities whiles waiting for the camera to warm up.
2. Great Pictures in all ranges & conditions. I used this camera outdoors whiles on backpacking & mountaineering trips and always came back with great pics. Macro/Micro/close-up pics are awesome as well. I mainly use that mode for taking pictures of stuff I'm selling on eBay and I've gotten many of compliments from bidders on the quality of the pictures.

3. Long battery life. I usually fill up 1GB worth of pictures before the battery meter flashes that 50% power is remaining. After 2 years of lots of use the battery's stamina does dimish some like all electronics using lithium batteries.
4. Durable; I've dropped my 2nd one many times, used it in rain, snow, sleet, at the beach and it looks like it been thru war but works like new.
5. The Auto Picture mode actually works because the base of the camera is wide & flat enough to sit on ledges, tables, etc... so you can take many self pics where ever you go. I find slim style cameras (which is now the style of about 90% of mainstream cameras) fail at this unless you tote around a tripod.
6. Dynamic Flash Modes actually work. Also the Scene modes are easy to use once you understand what does what.
7. Video Mode has really loud sound recording and you can take unlimited length clips depending on you memory card'c capacity.
8. Nice package in box. Comes with alot a good stuff, software, cables etc.

CONS:
1. Weak battery door clip-in points. Most cameras have this weakness and its not inherent to any one brand. Most cameras' battery door have weak hinges which is alot worse than the weak clip-in points for the 5200's battery door that eventually wears down or break off after a few years of rough use. But in the 5200 defense the battery has its own internal sliding lock that holds it in place so the door in not even necessary to begin with. Also the way the door clip in points breaks is better than having the hinge break because its easier to fix with tape (or glue if you are skilled).
2. Learning the various camera modes and figuring out what does what takes some time only because the modes actually work (meaning every mode will give a different picture), and there are a lot of scene modes.
Especially when it comes to taking nighttime pictures, unless you are a genius with cameras expect to spend a few weeks to a month perfecting night pics on this camera. They are a few modes for night where you have to determine if you are in normal, party, fireworks, or dusk night then you have to figure out if you want the flash or not, then after that if you choose flash you have to figure out what flash mode you want(party, sunset, fill-in, macro) . The positive thing is when you learn the sweetspots you will find that this camera takes really good night pictures a big positive that is lacking in many reviews.
3. Battery Charging. Not really a con as much as it is my griping. I just wished the battery charged like a cellphone/iPod instead of having to travel with the separate charging plug cable & battery charger-block.
4. No Sepia or BW filter modes! However the software that comes with the 5200 enables conversion to these filters.

BOTTOM LINE: If you getting a 5 megapix camera that you want to last a long time and take great dymnamic pictures get this one!
It is also on Steve's Digicams ultimate "BEST Camera" list
(On the list it is refered to as the Nikon 5600
which is a European version that uses 2 regular AA batteries instead of the lithium ones that the 5200 has, other than that they are the same cameras.)

Eh, it's okay...

I've had this camera for a little over 2 and a half years. It has lots of features, and I have taken some decent pictures with it, but I have also been very frustrated trying to get a nice clean picture. (It is always blurry, or slightly out of focus)

For a little while now, the door to the battery has been half broken. Now it is completely broken and won't stay shut. Not by my doing, the plastic that would hold it closed wore down and broke off. It isn't a very good design for longevity.

I just recently got myself a Kodak Easy Share. I love it. Great pictures EVERY TIME!! Sooo much easier to use. So I gave this camera to my husband...haha...sucker! :)

In conclusion, it is a decent camera. It has seen me through some times. But for the price, you can get a much better camera for much less. I would have to say that I was disappointed with this camera in the long run, and I am very happy with the one I have now.

Customer Review :

Very good image quality BUT with no manual controls

Noise is not noticeable at Iso 50 and even at Iso 100.
Star-up is quite fast, the camera is ready to shoot at just 2 seconds.
The lag between shot and shot is slow, u have to wait no less than 3.5 seconds before taking the next shot.
The Nikon S5 is made of metal, the look is really good very stilish and pocketable (super slim).
IMHO a huge limitation on the S5 is the lack of manual controls to set the aperture and the shutter speed. Also the built-in flash is quite weak
Id buy again this item

User-friendly Fun Camera

The S5 provides a simple point-and-shoot digital platform for amateurs and novice photographers. It allows you a decent amount of control over your settings while still providing good auto settings.

Incredibly fast to power on and pocket-sized, this camera is ideal for point-and-shoot digital photography.

Overall Good Camera

I've had this camera for a few months and it works well in the aspects of taking pictures and recording video. The pictures are clear and the videos have nice quality. The user-interface is very friendly and easy to use. The different modes are great and it really comes down to shooting with the right mode and settings to get the best out of your pictures. A great feature is "D- Lighting" which will brighten any picture if the photo was too dark. Nikon's cameras are easy to use and are reliable. There are some negatives to this camera as well. Something that has come to be a little bit of a problem is the fact that this camera uses two double-A batteries instead of rechargeable ion batteries, which is bad because the batteries exhaust quickly after continuous use, like viewing your photos, and eventually die. Also, the buttons on the camera become problematic. They lose their firmness and become weak and squeaky after a few months use. Also, the arm-strap that comes w/ the camera,(which is to be attached to the side) is completely and utterly useless. It offers no security because there is no tightening/loosening function, and unless your arms are as thick as a dictionary, the camera will fly right off your hand.

Question : I have a D50 Nikon digital camera, tips on pictures of the night or fireworks?
Going to disneyworld and would like to capture it on camera, but how

Answer:
This can be tricky. IF POSSIBLE, you would get better results with a tripod and a VR lens. Nikon makes VR lenses in 18-135 and 18-200 (among others) that might be useful for this venture. If you find that the fireworks are all going to pretty much the same altitude, you can pre-set the camera on a tripod, using a bit of a wide angle view to be sure that you capture the whole burst. If they are varied, you can use the tripod with just two legs on the ground or even just one and kind of track the bomb trail until it bursts. Use the P,A,S or M mode so you have more control and so you can leave the flash turned off. It will pop up if you try this in AUTO. You will have to use as large an aperture (small numbers) as possible and you will have to use 1-to-2 seconds, maybe even more, at ISO 200 or 400. Familiarize yourself with these adjustments so you can quickly make adjustments if you need to. Once you find a setting that is satsifactory, don't mess with it! Assume that the rest of the shots will need pretty much the same exposure. I've also taken decent shots of fireworks by laying down on my back and looking up instead of using a tripod. The D50 night portait mode might be useful for general scenes at night. Here's a long discussion about fireworks at Disney: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=285194 Here are some sites with fireworks: http://digiphoto.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/07/05/disneyland-fireworks/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/smtpboy/373815843/in/pool-views300/

Question : Looking fo a good lens for good price for my Nikon digital camera?
this is my camera i needa better lens that zooms in ad out more than the 18-55 lens!! Answer:
I suggest you stick with Nikon lenses. The original manufacturers lenses are almost always better. A very popular choice right now is the Nikkor 18-200mm zoom. I provided a link below. It is not the cheapest lens out there but it has a great zoom range. For most people this is the only lens they will ever need. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408518-USA/Nikon_2159_18_200mm_f_3_5_5_6G_ED_IF_AF_S.html

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's. Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question. Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : I broke the viewing screen on my nikon digital camera, how much does it cost to get it fix?
The screen is the only way I have to view with pictures I am taking, is there a way to fix it?

they charge $150 just to look at the camera you decide

Question : Which Nikon digital camera do you recommend?
I want an affordable camera. $500.00 or less but I also want to be able to take good pictures, and I want to be able to control zoom and lighting. I used a borrowed manual Nikon and I really liked it. the on i used was not digital. i went into a darkroom to do the printing myself and used film. like i said, i am looking for a digital camera. thank you.

Answer:
I would second D40. I searched for nikon digital cameras, within $500 and then ranked by image quality. Nikon d40 seems to be the best bet.

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons! I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself). Thanks!

Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are: Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT? Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused. Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm. As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.
