Compact, full featured, great pictures, but not for action scenes

I'm a novice photographer and the Nikon 8700 was the first camera I bought
that was a step above the point and shoot Olympus camera I've owned for
over 6 years.

I had read many great reviews on this camera and it lived up to all those
expections, minus one: this camera is not ideal for taking sports or
action pictures. I was quite disappointed with the results after trying
to take decent pictures of my sons playing indoor basketball and outdoor
soccer. I finally did some research and learned that (like another
reviewer had observed) only digital SLRs have the responsiveness and
speed and capability to take action pictures. With the 8700, the shutter
lag speed is one factor- you click on the shutter release button but it
takes a portion of a second before the camera snaps the picture. I then
thought that with manual settings (shutter release priority mode)I could
correct that behavior, but no combination of settings changed or improved
the result. The result was the images coming out blurry. I was surprised
at this and thought it was a camera setting, but after doing some more
online researching I found out that (1) the major digital camera review
sites do not seem to cover any sports or action picture taking and
(2) a lot of users of the 8700 did report the same problems that I
encountered and (3) you can improve sports shots by learning some basic
techniques because some claim that no matter what camera you have, you
do have to apply some of these techniques, which is basically predicting
your shots and having knowledge of the sport in hand so that you know
when to prepare for your shots. In either case, those folks did confirm
the weak sports mode and limited capabilities of the 8700, which seem
to be more pronounced than other cameras.

As a novice user, the only other negative aspect of the camera is its
difficult access to the options, which is not intuitive, especially when
you don't use the camera a lot and you're under time constraint to take
a picture (of a sports scene) and don't have time to fumble around to
figure out how to change a camera setting. And I'm quite a technical
guy who had already read the user manual. I'm sure with time one would
be more familiar with the menu system and how to tweak a specific setting.
I guess the camera's strength of many features can be its own weakness.

Other than the two above mentioned weaknesses, I would have to say that
with the many still shots of landscape, people, and even animals, this
camera has made me look better than my novice photographer status. Along
with the Canon inkjet printer I have, I can print out better than the
lab photo quality pictures at home. However, I am looking for a true
digital SLR just to compensate for the lack of a decent sports mode in
the 8700. Better digital SLRs have either 3 or 5 fps for continuous
shooting modes versus the 8700's 1.5 fps, but of course they are in
two different classes and price ranges.

My favorite digital I've owned

I've had a few digital cameras before this one, and I hated the quality of each and everyone of them. I was a novice (still am very much an amateur, so don't expect technicalities in this review) I was drooling over a Rebel that I can't afford nor, do I know how to use yet when I came across this one. I wanted a camera that took good crisp, clear shots, with good color. I have a digital scrapbooking business and my camera is a HUGE part of my business, so macro shots had to be good too. Plus, I scrap my own children's photos, using the fine setting on this camera, and they are perfect!

I have to agree with the sports shots and knowing the sport before hand because of the lag time, and you have to have the button pressed half way down focusing before the action you want to shoot occurs. Figured this out when my son does goal kicks in soccer or the other team is coming at him for a goal shot. I have to have it focused and ready before he goes to grab the ball.

I only use optical zoom and it is AWESOME. I can be sitting across the field from him where he is playing and still get a clear shot of him, and you can't tell how far I was from him. I was really impressed.

The color, I love the color. Like I said, I've had a few doozies for digital cameras, before I really learned what I was looking for in a camera, getting pictures that were either washed out without color or pictures that were almost yellow in color. I love the color that I get with this. My youngest daughter had the bluest eyes, and I would almost say this enhances the color of her eyes in a picture.

I can say now that I am a Nikon woman and when I can upgrade, I'll be staying with this company.

Best of the line

The 8700 is the successor to the 5400 and 5700, now with 8:1 zoom. It has all the features of a SLR with a LCD monitor but is smaller and lighter (no interchangeable lenses).

I love this camera

This is a wonderful camera, for me. I don't know much about photography and admittedly don't understand all the bells and whistles it offers but it does work great on mostly automatic focus. Only slght difficulties with a sort of slow shutter release requiring complete steadiness when shooting.

Amazing functional camera!

This is a wonderful little camera. I started my little addiction to Nikon with a $500 3MP point and shoot. I used it for a long time, this was when digital camera's first became everywhere. I decided to spend the money and get a GOOD new one. This one was perfect. I own a mini DVD camcorder and I'm sad that the quality of video isn't as good as the video from this camera! And easy to add to your computer. I am not a photographer, and this camera was very easy to learn. It has so much it can do, but other than video mine stayed on auto. I ended up upgrading to a SLR Nikon d70s and the size isn't much larger. I couldn't ever go back to a point and shoot because of the delay. When I got this 5700 it was $600 whereas I got my d70s body for the same price. I already had several lenses from my Nikon film SLR cameras. If you cant afford to get a SLR, I would absolutely recommend this camera. I sold mine to upgrade to the SLR and I miss it terribly. I would probably carry it around just to get little video's. But the pictures are amazing! If you want a sample of what these pictures turn out like I will gladly show you some of my snap shots, indoor and out. Just email me at ItsMelodie@aol.com and let me know. I highly recommend this camera though!

had it for 6 months now

The positives- never read the manual and I can operate it to my satisfaction without having done so (though I know there is probably much to learn if I would take a look). It fits in my handbag so I don't have to carry a camera bag around. The negative- Seems to really eat batteries. A lot.

ADDITION- While using the camera recently, I experienced an issue where the camera lens would not retract into the the body when I turned off the camera. There is a "Lens Error" message on the display and no pictures can be taken. This appears to be a common problem with the CoolPix series. According to the Nikon support website. there isn't anything the user can do about it except try taking the batteries out overnight. That did not work, so it had to go to Nikon for repair. They took care of it at no charge and the process was fairly painless (compared to other warranty service with various companies that I've experienced.)

Worst Digitial Camera

I bought this camera a few months ago and I'm already buying a new camera. The shutter takes FOREVER. I've missed so many important pictures due to the slow speed. Also 3 months after I bought the camera the lens wouldn't close. I sent it back to Nikon because it was still under warranty and they said that I must have dropped it or broken it some how (which I never did) and they wouldn't cover it. They charge me $50 to fix it and I wish I would have just told them to keep the camera. I would not recommend this camera to anyone.

Excellent Camera for the price!!

Got this camera as a Christmas gift and first used on my trip to Florida this spring. Very easy to use (I never even opened the instruction book) and pictures seem to be of a good quality so far. Battery life was short with regular batteries, but after buying some rechargable batteries, it has been much better. Computer program that came with the camera was also very easy to use. All in all great camera for the price!!

Battery eater

For the money, there are better cameras out there, like Sony. But my biggest problem is that this camera eats all the power from the batteries so fast, I got 15 pictures on brand new batteries (thats using flash), and there is no way to turn the flash level down, there are some settings you can play with but basically it's on or off.

Awful Camera Awful Service

I purchased this camera less than two years ago for nearly $350. It recently would blur when trying to focus. I'd manually focus the camera, but the autofocus would override it and blur the picture. The camera tries to be too user friendly, and you can't configure any photo settings manually.

The camera would not focus anymore, I sent it away to Nikon to get it repaired, and they wanted $115 to repair the camera.

So I paid almost $200 a year to have a sub-par crappy camera with bad software.

Don't make the same mistake I did. Never buy a Nikon. Ever.

Don't Do It

I am very unhappy with this camera. I had an Agfa with a swivel lens and when the pixels started missing after 7 or 8 years, I decided to replace it. I searched for another swivel lens and found this one. The images I take with it are almost always burry, no matter which setting I use. I had to return it to Nikon for repair when it stopped functioning (the shutter problem another reviewer described), fortunately (or unfortunately) it was within the year warranty. It is very much a disappointment and for the price, I feel cheated. I wish I could give less than 1 star. Anybody up for a class action lawsuit?

Avoid like the plague, good when working , broke after 2 holidays

At first i really liked this camera, it took some really good outdoor pictures on my holiday this year and last, However after very little use and no damage/drops etc. it no longer works.

The camera has a design flaw in which the internal shutter fails to open and therefore photos cant be taken (well a black screen comes out, but that is all) everything else about this camera was ace.

Looking on the internet for a fix, it would appear this is a massive flaw and nikon are failing to recognise the problem. 1000's of broken camera's all with the same problem, some only a few weeks old, some have been repaired for the fault to return a few days later.

Do not buy this camera, it is a problem waiting to happen. I personally will not buy another nikon product as my holiday was spoilt due to this.

Not as good as earlier and later version

I had earlier version of this camera and i really enjoyed it. I also liked that the battery can be charged in the camera. unfortunately, i have lost it very quickly. Then I bought this one and i was disappointed. quality of the picture is very bad. using 10X zoom is not such a good idea either, as you get horrible handshake. My dad bought himself a newer version of this camera (s10??) and i have used it for a bit and i was satisfied. though this is not a camera to be taking pictures of sport, even it has a special mode: it capturers many pictures in a row, though at the moment of capturing the picture you see black screen, so it is nearly impossible to follow the object. This camera does not really woth its price. and the funky twisting mechanism breaks (that happened with mine). Now i have Nikon s500 and i am very happy with it and it is also much cheaper.

Rating :

not worth the price

i was really excited about this camera. i dabble in photography, but wanted a camera i'd have a little more control over, and would be able to experiment with while taking professional quality shots. this little guy, however, just doesn't cut it. the flash tends to wash everything out, and you have to use it even when there's adequate lighting. also not great for action shots. i've yet to be 100% happy with a shot i've taken with this camera without using some sort of photo editing software. i work mainly in b&w, and the colors are never as crisp as i'd like. if had it to do over again, i'd go with something else.

Camera quit working 1 week past warranty

I bought the Coolpix 4600 camera for my daughter for Christmas. It worked fairly well for the first year. A week after the warranty was up, the camera would no longer turn on. Doing a search on the web, I found it is a common problem with this camera. Buyer Beware!

Very Displeased

I owned a Coolpix 4200 and was very pleased, it was a great camera, was out at Caye Calker and lost it there. I went and bought this Coolpix 4600, and boy was i sorry, i had 2 Nikons before and really believed in the company, but that was until i bought the 4600. Taking pictures with flash is a big joke, u miss your best moments waiting for the flash to be ready again, it takes forever trying to get the camera to focus in most modes. Was at my little girls graduation and got so frustrated trying to get it to focus to take a pic of her receiving her certificate. I almost smashed it. Very bad production by Nikon. They really need to do a recall or something. The Coolpix 4600 sucks big time and i wont recomend it to anybody.

not bad when it's working but breaks down easily and soon

I had this camera for about 5 months when the lens jammed. I thought the camera was a goner but eventually I was able to fix it myself. About 6 months after that I wasn't as lucky. I got the dreaded error message. The screen of death hasn't disappeared since, no mater how many times I try to troubleshoot the camera.

When the camera was in working condition, it was pretty decent. The pictures are pretty good. Not remarkable, but sufficient for a novice. The video is very poor quality - grainy and remember there is no sound, so a lot of the tings that you want to videotape are going to be useless taped with this camera.

If I was certain that my camera's death was one instance out of many, I'd even go as far as to recommend this camera to others, but from what I had read over the Internet, this is a common problem for Nikon 4600. Do yourself a favor and buy another camera, if you want it to last to its two-year anniversary.

The camera works fine until you realize that the batteries are down and you change them and still never starts again. Also is very slow when you turn it on (before not been able to turn it again of course) and takes forever to save the pics.
Size and weight are prefect and the pictures you take are wonderful, but I think there are more "downs" than "ups" with this product...

Questions & Answers
Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : I have a D50 Nikon digital camera, tips on pictures of the night or fireworks?
Going to disneyworld and would like to capture it on camera, but how

Answer:
This can be tricky. IF POSSIBLE, you would get better results with a tripod and a VR lens. Nikon makes VR lenses in 18-135 and 18-200 (among others) that might be useful for this venture. If you find that the fireworks are all going to pretty much the same altitude, you can pre-set the camera on a tripod, using a bit of a wide angle view to be sure that you capture the whole burst. If they are varied, you can use the tripod with just two legs on the ground or even just one and kind of track the bomb trail until it bursts. Use the P,A,S or M mode so you have more control and so you can leave the flash turned off. It will pop up if you try this in AUTO. You will have to use as large an aperture (small numbers) as possible and you will have to use 1-to-2 seconds, maybe even more, at ISO 200 or 400. Familiarize yourself with these adjustments so you can quickly make adjustments if you need to. Once you find a setting that is satsifactory, don't mess with it! Assume that the rest of the shots will need pretty much the same exposure. I've also taken decent shots of fireworks by laying down on my back and looking up instead of using a tripod. The D50 night portait mode might be useful for general scenes at night. Here's a long discussion about fireworks at Disney: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=285194 Here are some sites with fireworks: http://digiphoto.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/07/05/disneyland-fireworks/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/smtpboy/373815843/in/pool-views300/

Question : I broke the viewing screen on my nikon digital camera, how much does it cost to get it fix?

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are: Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT? Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused. Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm. As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.

Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : Which Nikon digital camera do you recommend?
I want an affordable camera. $500.00 or less but I also want to be able to take good pictures, and I want to be able to control zoom and lighting. I used a borrowed manual Nikon and I really liked it. the on i used was not digital. i went into a darkroom to do the printing myself and used film. like i said, i am looking for a digital camera. thank you.

Answer:
I would second D40. I searched for nikon digital cameras, within $500 and then ranked by image quality. Nikon d40 seems to be the best bet.

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.

Answer:
yes and no 99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : I have a Nikon D-40 digital camera. What would be best to use for storing and editing my photos?
We just got a new computer with Windows Vista. I have the software that came with the Nikon camera, we also have Windows photo gallery on our computer and a Windows XP version of Adobe Photoshop elements (would that run ok on Windows Vista?) Which program would be best?

Answer:
Interestingly enough, I have Elements 2.0 and it seems to work with Vista just fine. Elements is not super powerful, but it sure gets many jobs done just fine.

Question : I have NIKON Digital Camera Model L1. Can i use my camera as webcam?
I want to confirm that whether my Nikon Digital camera model L1 can be used as webcam or not? Do i need any software for that and if yes than where is that available? Is it possible to use my camera as webcam with the use of any software?

Answer:
simple answer no
