Seize the day, moment by photogenic moment, with the Nikon Coolpix S51. With the 3x zoom NIKKOR lens, you've got the quality optics to capture a great image, while the 8.1 megapixels ensure a fine high resolution for large prints and images. When you're done, you can review and show off your pictures on the 3.0 inch high definition LCD monitor. Finally, its slim, compact design lets it find a home in any pocket or bag until the next memorable moment comes along. 3.0-inch high-level contrast LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating High sensitivity of up to ISO1600, High-Sensitivity mode Three Unique Nikon Image Innovations for high performance - Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix and D-Lighting Face-priority AF can be selected outside of Scene Modes Sophisticated wave-surface design characteristic of COOLPIX S series Stores images on SD and SDHC memory cards (13MB memory built-in, additional 1GB memory card or higher recommended) Slim and compact, stylish black exterior Aluminum front panel exuding a sense of high quality, metal-plated side panel AV out for viewing images on TV screen USB for data transfer to Windows PC or Macintosh computer Unit Dimensions (W x H x D) - Approx. 3.6 x 2.3 x 0.8 in. Great photos but EXTREMELY SLOW taking them!

First the plus side:
The camera is slim, lightweight, well constructed flash guide is good too, but not as good as the s50 for some reason, large LCD screen is top notch.

Now for the negatives:
Absolutely the SLOWEST point and shoot camera at night that I've used since the 90's!
During the day it is not so noticeable, but at night you press the button down, the orange glow lights up peoples smiling faces than nothing, sometimes it takes a painstaking 10 seconds to take one shot at night! while other times at it's best it takes 3-4 seconds... still too long for any modern point and shoot. I think that Nikon, a leader in camera innovation should be embarrassed to have their name on the front of this camera. Buy a Casio or Cannon instead they are both slim and take much faster photos!

Terrible photo quality

My friends with 3.0 mp cameras get better pictures.

Really grainy
No vibrant colors
Pictures often come out unclear (shakes a lot)

Pros...
lots of features but a camera is for taking pictures and this takes crappy pictures.
Camera looks cool, big screen.

I'd say don't buy, you can find something better.

Nikon Coolpix S51

Great Camera. Very pleased with it. Only concern is the delay after taking a picture and trying to review it immediately. I would've liked to know the specific features of the camera before perchasing it, such as if there were specific settings for certain conditions (action, soft, indoor, outdoor/bright, etc.) Other than that, I am satisfied with this camera.

Great camera

Love it.
Compact, great pictures, good for those that don't like to figure out settings, lighting, pixels, exposure, etc.
I especially like the "macro" setting that allows very close-up photography.
Software included lets you download to your computer so images can be saved, emailed, or kept on hosting sites.

5 years and still going

Just wanted to share that I've had this camera for 5 years now and it is still working great. It's got some scratches from being dropped a few times. We've used the camera for indoor and outdoors. Night use. Day use. Parties, schools, picnics, hikes, travelling abroad, halloween, christmas, family, business. This camera has been almost everywhere with us (except for underwater, ha!) Practical features too: Zoom in, sports shots, quick video clips, special effects shots, reduce back lighting and glare, timer, auto, manual, portrait, sunsets, and so many more.

Incidentally, over 20 years ago, I had my first Nikon camera, an FE. I didnt think that the lens of the simple coolpix could compare with the professional quality lenses I could place on my FE, but the ease of digital photography with the coolpix has more than compensated for its "amateur" level service. I have even been able to take some professional looking chiaroscuro images that hearkened back to my photography buff days. I was surprised and happy with the results.

We've even sent this camera in once for repair under warranty in its first year. It came back working better than ever(if not as it should have all along). Even my kids have gotten their turns with the coolpix. Yes, the battery has a short life, we have found that depending on use, we can get one day to 3 days of use on the battery life. We just charge it often and in between uses. So it still comes through for us despite the battery charging.

We have had an easy experience with the coolpix 4300. its filled up our photo albums and library both digital and printed. We have all enjoyed this camera for family and fun use.

We have just gotten a smaller, newer, more sophisticated and expensive Sony digital camera---I'm still on a wait and see mode on it. But, from durability alone, 5 years of use, I recommend the coolpix. And again, on ease of use and the immense and wide applications our whole family has and is still getting out of this camera, I highly recommend this and the coolpix family of nikon digital cameras.

Good camera but SUCH a hassle!

I've had this camera for almost six years now and I have to say it's pretty durable. BUT the image display screen is painfully small (especially compared to some of the newer cameras) and everything this camera does takes FOREVER! It takes about 10-20 seconds between each shot to "think" and don't even ATTEMPT to delete pictures because that will take you up to a full minute for each picture! Plus, the batteries die very easily and it's kind of a hassle to charge the camera because the batteries must be taken out of the camera and plugged into a specific charger. This is much more inconvenient than the newer cameras, which tend to simply take AA batteries or else plug straight into the computer or wall. Also...this thing is very clunky and awkward. Not sleek at all.

That being said, the quality of the images taken on this camera tend to be very good! The close-up function can produce some very nice, finely detailed photos, and the coloring and light always seems good. I enjoy the end product of using this camera, but it really is a hassle most of the time, so for the easily-frustrated...this is not for you!

Also, I found in the instruction manual, hidden deep somewhere there, that it says you should take the batteries out of the camera when it is not in use and that that will help them last longer between chargings (which I've never done so perhaps that would've helped them not die so quickly).

Save your money

This is the first digital camera I have ever purchased, and I have learned a lot since then.

1) Avoid cameras where the lens extends outward from the body! These are prone to many problems, ranging from impact to debris effecting its performance.

2) Make sure the camera suits your purpose, test it in the store if you can. If you want a camera to capture action, this IS NOT the camera for you.

For simple snap shots, this is not a bad camera, for action it is virtually useless.

I now have a Nikon D50, which is infinitely superior, and worth the extra $$$.

Customer Review :

Satisfied. Not perfecly pleased.

I am a college freshman who was only looking for a decent looking camera to take pictures of my friends and video record lectures for my classes. This sleek red camera definitely passes the good looking test, but turned a little cumbersome when it was too small to take a decent picture. When I say small, I mean that usually my hands would shake because of how small it was and the weight of the camera wouldn't be balanced, so the picture would come out blurry. But if you are just looking for a casual camera this one is great.

I actually don't like the fact that the lens is placed all the way to the left of the camera... why did that do that for? It makes the pictures come out crooked sometimes, and cuts some faces off. The video recording device isn't that great either. Sure this camera has a beautiful large screen to capture my lectures, but the sound quaility is kind of horrible because it captures other audioless static noises around.

Recommended if only you want a good looking camera to show off to your friends.
Not recommended if your taste lies more along the professional lines.

Ahead of it's time

This camera is phenominal. It is easy to use, the viewing screen is huge. The color is far beyond superb. Be very very careful though when you purchase it through Amazon with the listing seller. Although the pricing seems to be good, it is an illusion because they rip the storage(memory card) out of it. You will be required to purchase one at a mere $70.00. If you do not, you must set the camera image to a less than desirable preferance in order to take more than 4 pictures.

In addition you will need to purchase additional battery's as well. They do not last long. So if you are on the road with only 1 battery with no other's charge. You will be stuck without a camera !

Overall nice camera for the price

In a nutshell, I have owned this camera for about 8 months

Pros:
Very pretty red color
Huge Display
Easy to use - Very comparable to other digital cameras I have used
Decent price - Again compared to other cameras with around 7.2 MP
Many nice features - video, etc
Lightweight

Cons:
View finder is located in a poor area - people tend to put their fingers over it when they take a picture

The zoom - is not as impressive as I had hoped

Not particularly durable - I have dropped this camera only once and the silver side paneling had cracked and chipped.

Two stars, more than fair.

Giving this item two stars is more than fair. Every once in a while you will get a good picture, but most of the time the picture is no good. With the flash on, objects in the picture are really white-ed out making color washed out and people super pale. With the flash off everything is super blurry. Also, if you take a video THERE IS NO SOUND!

Two years of misery

I got this camera as a gift on my birthday two years ago. Needless to say I've asked for a DIFFERENT camera THIS year!

I liked the fact that it was small, and compact. I liked the fact that it took pretty decent pictures.

I did NOT like the fact that the refresh rate between pics (especially with the flash on) took anywhere from 6-12 seconds!!!! That's just ridiculous!

I was CONSTANTLY missing out on really good shots and annoying friends and family members as I asked them to hold on while I waited for it to refresh.... UGH!

I'm switching to a Canon, either the 790IS which I heard has a SUPER fast refresh rate, or the 890IS, which also has a fast refresh rate.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this camera unless you like taking one picture every 30 seconds!

Rating :

Frustrating, slow, with blurry pictures standard

I have hated this camera since the very day I got it as a gift. It has never taken a picture in anything but the brightest light that wasn't blurry. I took it into the camera shop thinking the stabilizer was broken but they assured me that it wasn't. The delay between shots is so long its comical. I feel sorry for anyone else the owns this camera.

Rating :

WAY TO SLOW!!!!

I bought this camera after alot of research and loosing a WONDERFUL Olympus Stylus digital camera. I have been nothing but disappointed with this Nikon. Outdoors, the camera works fairly well, but indoors it's the pits. No matter how much light you've got in your space, it will always flash, so people can appeared washed out. On the flip side, the flash does not go very far, so photos can appear darker when you don't want that. The biggest con to this camera is the insane amount of time it takes for the flash to recover. I've counted it's 16 seconds, before it's ready to take another pic. This is just unacceptable for Nikon, I expected much better. No way can you expect your subjects to stand around and wait for this camera to ready itself between shots. I have 2 small children, so we rarely get anything good from this camera, as they scoot away too quickly. I agree with other reviewers, about the blurry hand always showing...and it being there makes it SO hard to snap a photo. I deeply regret buying this item, and would not recommend it. There are far better cameras out there for this price.

The good, the bad and the ugly

I have had this camera for about one year now. The Good: It takes beautiful pictures outdoors with good lighting. I use lithium batteries and they last a long time. The Bad: It cannot take decent flash pictures of people indoors. The photos are blurry and the color is bad. I have tried every mode that this camera has to offer and nothing seems to work. If anyone knows a way to take decent indoor photos of people I would like to know. Also, I have had no luck taking pictures at night, such as Christmas lights, etc. Also, the recharge is much too slow. People get tired of waiting and move away; especially children. The Ugly: After a year, the lens cover is now starting to stick so I am having trouble getting the lens cover to actually stay open. I guess it's time to try something new.

Great Back-up Camera

We already had a Nikon Coolpix 5600 and had been very satisfied with it for a number of years. We wanted a second camera so that both of us would be able to take pictures. The immediate thought was to purchase another Nikon 5600. This we did and we have been very pleased with it. They take very good pictures; the camera is fairly rugged; it is small enough so as to not be intrusive in the public and can easily fit into a pant or shirt pocket or a purse. Easily lives up to the reputation of its Nikon heritage.

Questions & Answers
Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

Answer:
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.

Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question. Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : Can I use a Nikon 35mm camera lens with any Nikon Digital Camera?
I've got a lot of great Nikon lenses but want to up grade to a digital camera. Can I get any Nikon Digital Camera to use with these lenses? My understanding is that most F-mount lenses are compatible with newer models.

Answer:
yes and no 99% of all nikon 35mm lenses will fit all the current Nikon DSLRs... HOWEVER, certain things may not work on the camera when you use an older lenses metering is sometimes lost on the DSLR if you don't use a Nikon lens that has the electronics in the lens... or if you buy a D40, D40x, D60 you would not be able to use an older Nikon auto focus lens and have the auto focus work unless it was one of the AF lenses with the built in motor. The oldest AF lenses required a motor drive in the camera body to focus the lens, Nikon left that motor out of the low end cheaper DSLRs.

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : What type of [digital] Nikon camera is good for photography?
I'm enterested in getting into photography and a nearby store is having a HUGE sale on Nikons! I would like to know which Nikon is best (for an ameteur as myself). Thanks!

Answer:
I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : I have a D50 Nikon digital camera, tips on pictures of the night or fireworks?
Going to disneyworld and would like to capture it on camera, but how

Answer:
This can be tricky. IF POSSIBLE, you would get better results with a tripod and a VR lens. Nikon makes VR lenses in 18-135 and 18-200 (among others) that might be useful for this venture. If you find that the fireworks are all going to pretty much the same altitude, you can pre-set the camera on a tripod, using a bit of a wide angle view to be sure that you capture the whole burst. If they are varied, you can use the tripod with just two legs on the ground or even just one and kind of track the bomb trail until it bursts. Use the P,A,S or M mode so you have more control and so you can leave the flash turned off. It will pop up if you try this in AUTO. You will have to use as large an aperture (small numbers) as possible and you will have to use 1-to-2 seconds, maybe even more, at ISO 200 or 400. Familiarize yourself with these adjustments so you can quickly make adjustments if you need to. Once you find a setting that is satsifactory, don't mess with it! Assume that the rest of the shots will need pretty much the same exposure. I've also taken decent shots of fireworks by laying down on my back and looking up instead of using a tripod. The D50 night portait mode might be useful for general scenes at night. Here's a long discussion about fireworks at Disney: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=285194 Here are some sites with fireworks: http://digiphoto.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/07/05/disneyland-fireworks/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/smtpboy/373815843/in/pool-views300/
