Small size and great pictures.

I was tired of lugging around my bigger digital camera so I chose this one. Great pictures, great zoom, great features. This was a great purchase. Highly recommend.

Cool is Right!

This little camera can handle all your photo needs, making it a great buy for anyone who only wants to point and shoot as well as those who desire more control over camera effects. It is surprisingly small, actually pocket-size, but with a nice large viewer. I especially appreciate the automatic lens cover. Photos and videos are of excellent quality, and the camera is easy to use. The sleek design is eyecatching and makes toting a camera around much less of a burden! They chose an appropriate name for this gem of a camera ~ it's really very cool!

Cool Coolpix

I purchased this camera to replace an older model Nikon coolpix camera. Its features and performance are comparable or better. the only drawback [which some see as an improvement] is the size. This model is barely larger than a pack of cards. that makes it convenient to carry but a bit more difficult to use when taking photos using the zoom feature. A camera with a bit more heft is better for holding steady when taking such shots. If you are a picture taker that likes to customize shots more often than the average point & shoot tourist, a larger model may be more to your liking.

Nevertheless, the camera performs very well and the variety of features available through a relatively easy to use menu format is great. Storage media available for the camera make use of the 10MP option convenient. processing time for photos, even at the 10MP setting, has not seemed long or inconvenient.

Coolpix S550 10MP digital camera is very cool

The Nikon Coolpix S550 10MP digital camera I purchased a couple of weeks ago has worked just as advertised, takes great photos, and is actually smaller than expected. We are very pleased.

small, time effecient, simple enough to use.

The camera was for my boyfriends birthday. This camera comes in a few different colors which I love because I'm all about variety and details (and his favorite color is blue so go me). When it arrived it came with everything it was suppose to, the color of the camera was what I expected, operating it is basic(it has a great feature similar to a cell phone that lets you pick any photo as a welcome screen, which is what i used so when he turned it on hee sees me holding a paper saying happy birthday). The dementions were good. It's maybe a fourth thicker than our old cam. However still a great compact size- but not so small that sausage like finger couldnt use it. Were having some flash-no flash/anti shake issues with it currently but im pretty sure it's because were too damn lazy to read the manuel. But the quality is great and i recommend it since the price isn't outrageous, if you need something even MORE basic, try my gay cam which has a total of 4 button, finepix A345. It sucks for those whos expectations for electronics are much higher for the technology we have today.

It's a Nikon!!

This was my first digital camera. It's a great little camera with nice optics. If you want a megazoom buy it. I must say though I returned it for a d40x, I'm use to using 35mm cams back in the day and I love it.

First Impression of Nikon Coolpix P80

I have only had this gem of a camera for one day and my first impression is very positive. I was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews, but so far I am very happy with this camera.
I am not a professional, but I do know a good picture when I see it. I was looking for something more than the typical point and shoot with a better zoom lens. I did my homework and read the manual before my camera arrived and was able to produce very sharp, clean pics of my very active Boston Terrier dogs. So far it has been very easy to set up and I was able to take my first photograph within a very few minutes. The zoom is incredible for a camera at this price. The video mode was very easy and recorded a surprisingly clear clip. I can't wait to learn how to use the manual mode. As previously posted, be sure to read the manual and you will not be disappointed with this camera.

Well Worth the Money

I don't normally post product reviews, but I wanted to throw in my two cents on the Nikon P80--especially considering the number of negative reviews by seemingly impatient people who used the camera for a day or two and felt compelled to return it. To read their reviews, you'd think this camera was manufactured by blind monkeys.

Rest assured, this camera takes fine pictures. In most people's hands, the Nikon P80 produces clear, vibrant images. Will it get you published in National Geographic? Not if you returned it the day after you bought it! Besides, even the best cameras can't make up for a lack of skill.

I purchased this camera because my previous point-and-shoot, which served me very well for 5 years, was too limited in its capabilities for what I wanted to do. On the other hand, a full DSLR camera was more than I needed. I saw the P80 in a local store and realized that it was the type of camera I was looking for. I read the reviews here, and had to filter through the poor reviews because the reviewers seemed too dismissive and too harsh in their judgments.

I will be using this camera mostly for outdoor use. I do a lot of hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing, and along the way I take a lot of pictures. Some of these pictures wind up in print, both B&W and color. The camera I had been using was small enough to fit in my breast pocket, which made it easily accessible and allowed me to be spontaneous. But a smaller camera has obvious limitations, which I sometimes ran into while trying to prep a shot for publication at 300 dpi. Don't get me wrong, that little 5-mp point-and-shoot worked well for me, but I wanted to see what I could do with a larger, more sophisticated camera.

The P80 is too big to fit in my pocket, but it is light enough that I won't mind taking it on week-long wilderness hikes. I have only owned the camera for 2 weeks now, and so far I have only been using the automatic settings while I get a feel for its capabilities, but already I have taken several shots that I like very much. The resolution is perfect for what I'll be using it for. Chances are, if I used a tripod the images would be even sharper. A full-size image works out to be 9 x 12 inches at 300 dpi. You can, of course, set the camera to take smaller pictures.

One thing I've noticed from two weekend hikes is that the battery has a more limited life compared to what I'm used to with the smaller camera. Having been sure to fully recharge the battery the Friday night before my trip, I have been getting the "low battery" indicator by Sunday afternoon on both trips. Granted, I've had a bad case of "new toy syndrome" and over time I will probably learn to conserve battery power better. In the meantime, I plan to buy a back-up battery. It couldn't hurt. One thing that I've missed is an indicator that tracks battery power from start to finish, not just one that flashes when the power is low.

Another minor fault--which I can learn to live with--is that the on/off button can be a little too easily triggered. While trying to put the camera back in my backpack, I've accidentally touched the button and turned it on a couple times.

One thing I wasn't clear on when purchasing the camera from Amazon was what it came with. For the record, the following items come in the box with the camera:

* Battery recharger
* Rechargeable battery
* USB and AV cables
* A strap long enough to hang the camera from one's neck
* Software CD, especially helpful for managing the file upload process

The internal memory is good for ~18 images at full resolution. I bought a 4 gb SD card, with a capacity of ~850 images.

So, if you're looking for a camera somewhere between a POS and a DSLR, don't pass this one over thinking it only takes grainy, blurry images. It is a fine camera, especially for the price I bought it for. I haven't regretted it, and I am looking forward to getting to know it better.

I give it 4-1/2 stars.

A Camera for the Birds

This is a great camera for nature photography. Following my recent purchase, I spent two weeks photographing, sans tripod, migrating hummingbirds. The long zoom, high resolution, vibration control, and continuous shooting mode led to some great photographs. The close-up mode has also been very useful while photographing plants.

Great pictures, compact size

Just returned from a second vacation and had the opportunity to test the Scene mode in a variety of situations. Works great, especially the back light and the museum modes. Flash and red eye work great at providing wonderful natural colors. Compact size works great for slipping camera into pocket and taking on the go.

Impressive little point and shoot

This camera offers great bang for the buck. The shots you can take with it are absolutely fine - my wife is a pro photographer and loves this thing. You can carry it anywhere, take great photos, and then print them up nice and big without losing any quality.

If you are in the market for a relatively inexpensive point and shoot you should definitely add this camera to you list. I highly doubt you will be disappointed.

Nikon S600 Coolpix

This handy little pocket camera is wonderful. I compared the pix from this camera with my Nikon D80 with a 28-300 lens. The pix were comparable. Of course, the S600 isn't as fast, but for the money it is a fabulous little camera. I ALWAYS have it in my pocket. Never know when you need a camera. It has the ability - in camera - to zoom in on a pix you have taken and then with the press of a button to crop and save the pix that you have enlarged. So you have both the original pix and the enlarged/cropped pix. Great feature. My only complaint is a small one. I would like it to be easier via the menu to format my memory card. But a small nuisance for an otherwise wonderful product. The screen is fairly viewable in bright light. This can be a problem with many cameras. But when I first looked at this camera, I asked the salesman to come outside with me so I could look at the screen in light. None of them are perfect, but this one was okay. I miss a viewfinder, but very few of the pocket cameras have this. Overall I am thrilled with this little beauty.

Excellent pocket-sized camera you can take with you everyday!

There are so many things that I like about this camera:
-small size. I didn't realize that it's smaller than the Sony W series of which I have owned a few. The Sony's are great, but the NIkon S600 is better if you want the smallest form factor with the best image quality. I also owned the Sony T200 and now I realized that Sony calling it ultra-slim is quite a joke since it really is bigger than the Nikon S cameras.
-Great image quality. I love the quality of the photos this little camera takes. I love vivid colors and I use the vivid settings all the time, and it gives me the right amount of color saturation and contrast to make my pics pop! The sharpness is also excellent.
-Great lens. The wide angle lens in this camera has excellent sharpness, consistently sharp from edge to edge, something you would expect from Nikon.
-Fast startup and autofocus times. I think this is as good as most other cameras, if not better.

There are some minor annoyances. The video, while quite excellent, loses sound a second before the video ends. This was true of the Nikon S510 which I formerly owned. I was hoping Nikon would have fixed it by now. I also wished you can go from viewing images to taking photos by half-pressing the shutter button like in other cameras like Sony and Canon, but no such luck. You have to press the play button to go from view mode to shooting mode.

While other brands give you more options for image parameters especially in the canons, bottom line for me is the excellent image quality and fast startup and autofocus performance of this camera. If you want the smallest form factor with the best image quality, then the Nikon Coolpix S600 is it!

Good Camera, buy a spare battery

I chose this camera as I wanted a camera that could take good quality shots, was fast to start up, easy to use and small enough to carry around easily.
I think this camera is all of those things. I travel alot and find this nikon great for carrying around in a pocket / bag without taking up any real space.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons.

1)It doesn't take AA batteries. My last camera did and I found that very useful when it ran out of juice in a foreign country or if I simply didn't have the charger with me. Simple solution though... buy a second battery, which I did relatively cheaply on Amazon.

2) I had the camera only a week or two when during a family wedding the camera had a bit of a melt down. I know these family things can be stressfull but ....
Basically every picture had dark black lines horizontally across the screen for a while and then after a few more photos the colour went funny and it wouldn't even focus.
In saying that, Amazon exchanged it immediately with no questions asked and the new one works fine.

In all, it's a good little camera, I love the "brushed steel" kind of look and I would recommend it with three suggestions.
1) buy a spare battery
2) buy a zip up bag for it (the screen scratches easily)
3) stay clear of family weddings

EXCELLENT CAMERA!! EXCELLENT PRICE!!

This is the 10th Nikon camera I've purchased this year. I own two myself. The others I've purchased for friends. I love the look of this ruby red camera. The 3" LCD screen is decent size (much larger than my previous cameras) and great for previewing. The photo and video quality is exceptional. The anti-shake AE is much much better than my previous camera. Actually, I have absolutely no problem in that area. There are some other really great options for this camera, but I have the finish reading the manual to take full advantage of that.

My only dissapointment was that just after about 3 days of using this camera, the LCD screen began to give problems. There were lines and different colors going through the display which is really distracting when you need to preview your photos or videos. The quality when eventually uploaded is great, but I hate that the screen is bad.

Good Camera; Worthless software included

I like this camera a lot. Good speed and image quality for the value. After seeing the Canon A580 I think I may have purchased that one, but I was looking for something very user friendly for my wife, so this works fine. The one feature that I find oddly cool is the "Panorama Assist", which helps to create good panoramic images. Basically, after you take the first picture, it keeps part of the picture on the screen while you look live at your target which allows you to line up the next shot...Really cool, and a smart feature. (it may have been around for a while, but I'm a Canon user) :)

My only issue is with the terrible software included. There is no editing software included....who does that?? It includes a panorama maker and a transfer software, and quicktime...because that's supposed to be helpful or something....

The "Nikon Transfer" software...first, its ugly...looks like something a teen developer made. No style to it, but it doesn't do anything worthwhile besides a bridge (that didn't work until several restarts later) to download the stuff. [...]

Questions & Answers
Question : Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle lens?
I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and bought a wide angle lens. I don't know a lot about photography, I had to use this kind of camera for a job. My photos are supposed to be set for the widest angle for the lens (24mm). Is there a way to set this up using my camera menu? Help! Thanks.

Answer:
No use the zoom ring on the lens. There will be a crop factor in play here the 24 will be like a 36 mm lens.

Question : I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?
I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

Question : What is the BEST Canon or Nikon digital camera for MOVIE's w/SOUND and in LONG LENGTHS?
Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer:
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

Question : Do I need a special flash for my Nikon Digital Camera?
I need a larger flash for my Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital Camera with a hot shoe, and would love to be able to use the trusty Vivitar Thrysistor 283 that worked so well with my old SLR, but the Nikon manual warns that flashes not specifically made for Nikon Digital Cameras may damage the camera through some kind of electronic feedback. Are they just trying to sell me a $300 flash unit, or is this a valid concern?

Answer:
Yup, it is possible for an old flash to fry a camera due to the trigger voltages. You can check this site for more info on that http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html. Cross reference your flash against the table there. In any case, using an older flash would probably mean a loss of i-ttl (for nikon) or e-ttl (for canon). You would need to use auto/manual flash then. In addition, the camera may also act funny (e.g. my old metz on my canon 20D will always give me a 1/200 f5.6 on program mode. I have to use it in manual mode instead.

Question : can a nikon slr 35mm lens be used on a nikon digital camera?
i have a nikon n55 film slr and i'm looking to buy a nikon d70 or d80. i have two lenses, one of which is a 70-200mm (af). both the n55 and d70/80 use a 'g' lens mount but i'm wondering if there are disadvantages to using a film lens on a digital camera. thanks in advance!

Answer:
Absolutely .. that is what is so good about Nikon's .. even the old manual focus lenses from 1959 can be used with a little $15 AI modification ... any AI lens forward can be used. I use all my old Nikkor lenses on my D100 and D200 DSLR's. Since your N55 is a auto-focus camera, all of its lenses will work on the D70 or D80 DSLR There are NO disadvantages using 35mm Nikon "film" lenses on a DSLR

Question : What cord do I need to connect my Nikon digital camera to my computer?
I have a regular USB cord, but it doesn't fit in my camera. The hole in my camera is a lot smaller. It says AV out, but I don't know what that means. What type of cord do I need, and where can I get it? Thanks

Answer:
Without knowing exactly which camera you have nobody will be able to accurately answer your question. Also, your camera should have come with it's own USB cord. That's the one you should use or one similar to it (using the same connectors).

Question : How to clean my Nikon digital camera screen?
And not scratch it or pay alot?

Answer:
I use a lens cleaning wipe, I got it at Target in the Glasses section. They are little disposable wipes that you can use to clean your lens and they also work well for the screen!

Question : I broke the viewing screen on my nikon digital camera, how much does it cost to get it fix?

Answer:

Question : Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
The Lenses I have are: Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D Could they be adapted to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models? Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Rebel XT? Thanks.

Answer:
I currently have used my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no problem. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they lack the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused. Right now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my current digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Just a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 crop factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital world. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm. As for your last question, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT. Hope this helps.

Question : I have a D50 Nikon digital camera, tips on pictures of the night or fireworks?
Going to disneyworld and would like to capture it on camera, but how

Answer:
This can be tricky. IF POSSIBLE, you would get better results with a tripod and a VR lens. Nikon makes VR lenses in 18-135 and 18-200 (among others) that might be useful for this venture. If you find that the fireworks are all going to pretty much the same altitude, you can pre-set the camera on a tripod, using a bit of a wide angle view to be sure that you capture the whole burst. If they are varied, you can use the tripod with just two legs on the ground or even just one and kind of track the bomb trail until it bursts. Use the P,A,S or M mode so you have more control and so you can leave the flash turned off. It will pop up if you try this in AUTO. You will have to use as large an aperture (small numbers) as possible and you will have to use 1-to-2 seconds, maybe even more, at ISO 200 or 400. Familiarize yourself with these adjustments so you can quickly make adjustments if you need to. Once you find a setting that is satsifactory, don't mess with it! Assume that the rest of the shots will need pretty much the same exposure. I've also taken decent shots of fireworks by laying down on my back and looking up instead of using a tripod. The D50 night portait mode might be useful for general scenes at night. Here's a long discussion about fireworks at Disney: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=285194 Here are some sites with fireworks: http://digiphoto.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/07/05/disneyland-fireworks/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/smtpboy/373815843/in/pool-views300/
