Good value camera with many benefits.

I recently acquired this HP417 camera as a gift. As a newbee to digital photography, I initially thought it would take some time to come up to speed in learning the format, deal with the inevitable hardware hookups and software downloads.

To my complete surpise, I have found an excellent camera with easy to use functionality which also comes prepared with available software from the manufacturer to easily and selectively download my photos.

For those reviewers and new users who continue to grapple with battery issues, I have 2 words: Lithium Dioxide. Forget about the rechargeable NiCads and the premium Alkalines. Lithium batteries hold their full voltage for the duration of their long lives and do not allow the gradual voltage dropping you may have experienced as a battery problem with this camera, whereby it appears to "peter out" or react slowly.

Additionally, with a simple addition of a $7 1GB SD Memory Card, your camera's memory will enjoy its full potential and ability to store an incredible amount of absolutely quality photos at the highest setting of 5.2 MP. You can delete as you go along.

Anyway, I am bored with reviewers always fixing the blame and not addressing the issues, when in most cases it is operator-induced ignorance at work.

The HP417 has an LCD menu which is intuitive

Not a very good camera

I have had this camera since December of 2005.But i got i with the printer too.The printer is very good. But more can be said for the camera. For a few reasons The battery life is very poor.Like it can probley last you 30 mins at the most. And some times if you take a lot of pictures you can use them from the camera. And it will say photo can not be found. And sometimes whene you turn the camera on the screen will be off.And the screen is kind of bleek and dark and blurry too.And the video quality is horrible. And when you are taking a video with the camer the videos are very blurry and poor. And when you take a video you can look at the video on the camera but you CAN NOT HEAR THE SOUND.You have to have a computer to here the sound. And my grandpa has a canon and you can watch the video and hear the sound on the camera too!!!!!And in my opinon HP makes better computers then cameras. Thanks.

so-so camera

This camera i have had for a while, and i personally think it stinks. It is somewhat heavy for this range. The mega pixels are only 5, zoom is only 3x, and it takes AA batteries. It's battery life is not very good, it is heavy, and overall i would not suggest it.

COMPLETE JUNK!

This is the most over priced and poorest quality cameras on the market. I have returned mine twice for repairs and now the auto focus is going out. The camera's MACRO function is a joke and if your looking for a camera that can take pictures in low light then this ain't it because it won't. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!

good camera

I've had this camera for well over a year, and I love it. It does take a while to recharge its flash and that has frustrated me at times. This can be helped, but not totally avoided, by always having freshly recharged batteries.

It does eat batteries quickly, but I find that as long as I recharge them enough, it's fine. It only takes two AA batteries and most rechargeable batteries come in sets of at least four, so I always have an extra two with me and switch them out if need be. Of course, if you're the kind of person who always forgets to/never charges their batteries, this is a bad choice for you.

It takes wonderful pictures. I've used it in pretty much any setting you can think of and it's been great. If you leave it someplace cold it'll take a bit to turn back on, but I imagine any other camera would have a similar problem.

Some other reviewers have said this isn't a hardy piece of machinery. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've dropped the thing a number of times and it's still good as new. A little scratched, of course, but it works just as well as it did when it was new.

I pretty much recommend this to anyone, unless you have a problem with being patient about things. Yes, the flash can take a bit to recharge, so just anticipate that. Make sure your batteries are charged. That's all. =)

Don't Buy Reconditioned

Purchased two cameras. Scratches on both, one doesn't work at all. Never buy reconditioned products.

Descent camera for the price!

As some already mentioned, battery life is not long, but with a couple of rechargeable batteries, you should be fine. After all, you will have a descent camera at a low price!

Starter Camera

This is my first digital camera. I dont know why everyone has been giving it such low ratings, I think it a really nice little camera for what I paid to get it.

All of the controls are pretty easy to figure out, it takes only about 30 minutes of screwing around to get it.

Im able to keep upwards of 700 photos or an hour and a half of video on the thing because Ive got a 1GB SD card though.

Batteries will work for a long time if you use better batteries.

There are defineately better cameras than this one, but they are higher priced. This is my first camera, and Ive taken alot of really nice photos sofar, and it has not given me trouble once in the months that I have been using it.

WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!!!!

I didn't get the camera from amazon. Mine came with a pinter. JUNK, JUNK, JUNK! Batteries never lasted more than a day wether the we rechargeables or not. That's even if i could get the stupid thing to stay on or turn on at all. I even sent it back and got a new one from the company and that one was worse than the first one!!!!!!!!!!! Buyer beware: Cheap and not worth the headache.

TERRIBLE camera!

I wish I could give this camera NEGATIVE 10 stars!!!

The screen died on me after a few months of use. I did not drop it or anything--it just froze up and went black. It acted like it was taking a picture, but there was no picture. HP said it was a 'hardware' issue, so they sent me another one. A month after my year warranty was up (keep in mind that this replacement camera was NOT a year old, but my year warranty from my original purchase date was up), it happened again. Basically, both of these cameras did not last a year.

Plus, the camera EATS batteries, and the connection to the computer via USB sometimes wouldn't work, which I've read elsewhere this is a common problem with this camera.

DON'T BUY IT! Try a Canon instead. My sister swears by Canon and has not been disappointed. I should have listened to her, but I thought HP would be more compatible with my computer. Boy, I was WRONG!!!

Customer Review :

Super camera for beginners.

I was very wary of purchasing a digital camera. All the options, styles, and what the heck are pixels and what do they have to do with pictures, anyway? Well it turns out that the 5 megapixels are great for my small to medium photos. The battery lasts for a while, even longer if you take measures to save the battery. Even though I do not find it hard to figure out how to use technology, I think even my mom could figure out how to use this. The buttons and menus are so easy, and it even explains what the options mean and how they affect your pictures. My only issue is that I didn't know I had to buy a memory card for it, so there you go: Buy a memory card and shoot away!

Very Dissapointed!!!

I bought this camera based on the reviews. Now unless it was a manufaturer's defect, this camera was a piece of junk! Simple, but horrible grainy, blurry photos. I would not recommend this camera to anyone looking for a decent point and shoot camera that takes quality photos!

Question : I'm looking for an instruction manuel for a hewlett packard camera. model 618?
have no instruction manuel for a model 618 hp digital camera. I'd like to find the web site where I could order one, the flash is not working. Not having the manuel, I can't find in the menu where the flash might be turned off.

Answer:
good luck. they never made an instruction manual so you'll be looking a long time. HP began outsourcing their camera manual writing at the time the 618 was produced. The first manual was written in Hindi and Farsi but not in English (I assume you're an English speaker? ) By the time HP rectified the problem using their Farsi translation software the camera was already obsolete and defective. There has been a class action lawsuit filed in Hosuton Superior Court over this issue and the Judge is considering placing a moratorium and injunction on future HP products

Question : Is it true that realplayer version 10 can interfere with me sending pictures from my digital camera to my pc?
because i can no longer upload from my kodax easyshare cx7300 or my hewlett packard DSC 220 ? And does anyone know how i can get these working again please? i have tried installing the software again but it isnt having any of it?????? HELP.

Answer:
I haven't had any trouble with realplayer, mediaplayer or any other program and my digital pictures. I'd have a look for a virus first to see if this is upsetting your system - you'll have to reinstall if there are viruses abd they are removed - then i'd look at control panel, and admintration tools to see if your printer and digital camera are enabled.

Answer:
I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the camera and what kind of pictures you want to take. HP makes pretty decent printers and if you can get a sample shot printed from it prior to purchase depending on your satisfaction with the quality of the print that should be your main decision maker on that scale. Also be aware that if you're going to be say, printing a book a photo printer isn't the best choice because the quality is definitely inferior on that level. As for HP cameras I've never had any personal luck with them. As the previous poster stated HP camera's are 'ok' but for true quality I'd look at another brand. I'm a very big fan of Canons, but Nikons are also solid pieces of machinery, along with the sonys, in terms of reliable picture quality and satisfaction.

Question : my digital camera stopped working!?
Its a hp Hewlett Packard photosmart digital camera with 2x digital zoom.I put brand new batteries in it and even a new memory card. What can i do to fix it? I need Help! QUICK!

Answer:
Check that the batteries are inserted correctly. If it's under warranty, send it in for servicing. If it's not, try removing the batteries and leaving them out for a day or two. If it still doesn't work, toss it. Unfortunately, your cheapie HP won't be worth the cost to fix it, just replace it!

Question : Importing photo's from camera to iPhoto on macbook?
Right, here's the problem, I have a Hewlett Packard E427 digital camera. I have no Hewlett Packard software. I'm trying to import photo's from the camera to iPhoto on my macbook. When I connect the camera to the macbook using USB, iPhoto opens automatically but doesn't give me an (obvious) option to import the photo's. According to Hewlett Packard, you do not have to use their software to import photo's. What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy! Thanks.

Answer:
download the drivers off Hewlett Packard and connect the camera to the mac and copy it from the camera to iphoto

Please no mean comments. We are just wondering. Except mine is a navy color but that doesn't mater

Answer:
Your camera has better specs, because it has optical image stabilization. However, the specs are so close that any differences are more likely due to the photographer and not the camera. If I were to pick one for myself, I'd take yours. :-)
