Great little camera but a few glitches

I purchased two of the M527 cameras with the 6220 dock. Both packages came with an instruction manual for the 6221 dock, which has more features than the 6220 dock, so the instruction manual doesn't pertain to this 6220 dock at all. But the 6220 dock is very basic so having no manual is not that important. One of the M527 cameras is very finicky when charging the batteries. It displays a status message that reads "Batteries cannot be charged" along with an error code, even though the rechargeable batteries that came with the camera are in place (the camera comes with rechargeable batteries even though the "what's in the box" states that alkaline batteries are included). When you enter the error code on HP's web site, HP's explanation is that either 1) the batteries are non-rechargeable, 2) the batteries are damaged, 3) charge the batteries using an external charger before using them for the first time, or 4) replace the batteries. I found that the green generic rechargeable batteries that came with the camera do not work even though I tried option 3 above. So I use Energizer rechargeable NiMH batteries and they charge fine. Also, the camera displayed an error message of "unsupported card" when I tried to use a 128MB SD card. A 512MB SD card and a 1Gig SD card both worked fine. Even with these glitches, I still rated the camera 4 stars because it takes great pictures, has a nice easy-to-use self-explanatory menu and comes with great HP software.

Customer Review :

I own TWO of these

Being very careful about my investments, I researched digital cameras in my price range ($200-$300) for a long time before committing to the HP 935. I went to several on-line review sites that had side-by-side comparisons, and one even offered image tests against the comparable Canon. I like color. Real life vibrant color. In all the tests, the HP beat the Canon. I bought it and haven't regretted it yet.

My entire online gallery is filled with examples and I have won awards at a national web site (33 times) against thousands and thousands of other images. Some people complain about the HP 935 image quality in low light settings. ANY camera in low light will have it's difficulties without the use of a tripod or manual settings if you wish to avoid flash. By using a tripod, and manually setting the HP 935 to aperature priority, 100 iso, turning off the flash and triggering it with the built in timer, the camera then automatically determines the length of exposure and is usually VERY accurate. I wish I could provide a link to some subground level images I took - the colors are vibrant, true and virtually noisefree.

If you follow the instruction manual, this camera will do everything PLUS....EXCEPT for produce speed shots. Sorry. That is where it falls down. It can not compete with the rapid shots of the cameras out there that cost 3 to 4 times as much. It is just SLOW in comparison. And I mean SLOOOOW. If I could change ANY thing about this camera, it would be to speed it up. But I like to think that the reason it is slow is that it has to take it's time to give me those great shots. Quality over quantity. ;)

Battery issues? Well - okay. But remember it takes a lot of power to make those great shots. lol Also, when the camera shows the batteries are drained, power down. Count to ten. Power back up. Instant battery life. BOTH of my HP's do this and reading other's feedback, I see this is common. You can do this sometimes for an entire day in the field but you still need to keep spares on hand. Eventually the batteries really are drained. (My Olympus drained batteries far worse)

Macro - once you learn the tricks of using this function, it is very handy!!! Until then, it might drive you batty. My Nikon and Pentax film cameras do the same thing this does, so I was prepared.

Telephoto - I rarely use it. less noise that way. This camera takes such large sharp images, I just normally shoot and crop what I need.

Not a perfect camera - just perfect for it's price range. That is why I bought a second one. Buy a tripod, rechargeable batteries and you will be set.

Pictures are ok, but EATS AA Batteries by the dozens.

While HP did a pretty good job with this camera, someone forgot to figure out how much power it takes to run it. If you have this camera, buy stock in a battery company just so that you can get some of your money back over the next few years. I have gotten as little as a dozen pictures out of a fresh set of batteries, to as many as 25 pictures using high end batteries 2800 mAh batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are a mixed blessing. The hp photosmart 8886 docking station will recharge your rechargeable batteries when you put the camera in, but there is no trickle charger feature built into the docking station. This means that your batteries will charge up, but then sit without any maintenance cycle to keep them topped off for you. So, your batteries may well be dead in a week or two even though the camera was on the docking station.
Not very well thought out at all.
Optical zoom provides good pictures.
Digital zoom starts going down hill very quickly to the point of not usable.
The video clip feature is very choppy, so not that great compared with other cameras in this price range.

All in all, I'd pass on this camera if I were to buy another one. The battery eating power needs are just too great to make this a user friendly battery.

Worst digital camera.... ever

I bought this camera at Sears about a year ago. It was origionally listed as $353 but I ended up getting it for only $118. This camera has MANY cons and hardly any pros.

-->The audio is junk.
Anything above a whisper makes the audio clip so you just get this annoying loud ticking as audio (in videos and audio comments). It makes the video mode completely useless.

-->Picture quality isn't all too good.
I expected much more from a 5.3MP camera than this one offers. The picture quality on it's highest setting is all but decent. It's barely acceptable in any other condition than high light outdoors photography.

-->The flash is HORRIBLE!
There is absolutely no happy medium with it. it either over exposes the picture, or underexposes it. Any low light situation results in pictures with alot of noise and blurryness.

-->Battery life is NONEXISTANT!!!
This is the absolutely worst feature of the camera. It takes about 5-10 pictures on a brand new set of duracell photo batteries (the kind that cost almost $10 for a pack of two). Recently I was taking pictures of my girlfriend and I went through 22 Duracel AA batteries.

The only pros of this camera is that it's digital and not film, and that it boasts a SD card that my laptop has a built-in reader for. I was much happier with my Cannon Powershot S10 2.1MP camera.

I own a nice 35mm SLR camera with many differnet lenses and accessories, and I now use that camera more than the digital becuase of all the cons this camera has. I would rather pay to get my film devoloped and have decent picture quality than use this digital camera.

Overall rating: 1/10
Would be good for a novice user looking to make printouts from a photo center or computer, but for anyone that has a slight interest in photography, you definately need to look elsewhere.

HP 935 Experiences

I have owned this camera for approximately 2 1/2 years, and my experience has been very frustrating. Rarely do I get a good picture when using the zoom (very noisy). I have also experienced many problems with taking pictures indoors, and in low light. The most frustrating problem is that I can take multiple photos of the same scene with the same settings and get different results (some light, some dark, contrast inconsistencies, color inconsistencies). I have also experienced the battery drain problems that other reviewers have reported, but have had great results using Lithium batteries. About have the time, the camera gods smile, and the camera takes a great picture, but I've lossed two many precious moments to take another chance. Time to get a new camera.

The Great and the bad

I really love this camera. I got it two years ago for christmas, and I can't explain how much I love this thing! The only problems I have are that its impossible to take pictures indoors. Like at a concert or graduation or something like that. And the battery life sucks. But if you purchase rechargable batteries, it works much better.

An EXCELLENT Camera

This Camera is Excellent, Self explanatory in each mode you choose. So many built in options that you would mostly find in the software CD, I love the huge 3" screen and the built in zoom is very nice. My photo's look like professional takes. Best camera I've ever owned...Hint...A camera is only as good as you take care of it.

Can't import pictures to its slideshow

So far, so good. I'm very happy with it esp. the video. Just press the button once to start and then once to stop. Sit the camera down and it keeps on recording. What I don't like is the fact that it will not import other photos from my computer to add to its slideshow. My Kodak can do that.

Lens Distortion IS A JOKE!!!!

This camera is a JOKE! Don't buy it unless you want all of your memories to look like they took place inside of a funhouse. I don't know what HP did with the lenses, but if you take a photo of a square object, the sides of it appear to "bend" or "bow" outward. It's sad because other than this one major flaw, this is an awesome and easy-to-use camera. The large and bright display is very impressive too. What a shame! It's back in the box, and will be returned today. I think next time I'll stick to a company that has experience with camera optics.

Praise plus disappointment

I received my HP Photosmart R847 8MP digital camera for my birthday in May 2008. First the praise: R847 is indeed simple to use, and it's light, small and slim - a good pocket size, BUT...(see Disappointments). If you manage to find perfect focus on its "best" setting, this camera produces absolutely gorgeous images - you can zoom in and in and in (during edit, that is) and the details just get richer and yummier (in the blow-up in front of me I can count my kitten's eyelashes - beautiful!). Now the disappointment: this camera has ZERO battery life, since its first full charge and use - I am able to take and review 40 photos MAX on a full charge before it is depleted. I called HP about this the first week after I received the camera, and I was basically told "gee, tough luck" - but that they'd be delighted to sell me another battery, 50 dollars please. (VERY poor customer service experience.) R847 doesn't like to find focus on small objects. I particularly like spiders and bumblebees, but focus is very hit and miss, and usually several inches behind the object you want to capture. I just can't figure out the "sweet spot" - it seems pretty random. A tiny change in angle, lighting, etc and you lose focus again. Although, as I mentioned, this camera is a great pocket size, you can't carry it there because the stupid slide-down lens cover is SO easily flipped open. And then it sits in your pocket and GOES DEAD. Actually, that even happens in the carrying case occasionally, if you knock or bump it. This is a MAJOR design flaw. It needs a catch on the cover to prevent the accidental nudge-open. I love the image quality, but half the time I can't even take photos because R847 is stone dead. I would not buy another camera of this design, and I would not recommend it for others to purchase.

HP R847 Review

Very high quality construction, small, easy to use, multiple functions and controls, excellent pictures taken in variable light conditions, very good recharge battery life. In other words, the HP Photosmart R847 that I purchased to replace my very good, 8 year old Kodak, so far, is superbly excellent.

The price was terrific on this item, plus, an extra bonus---free shipping. I'm not qualified at this time to give a complete review, as I've yet to print out pictures or download onto my computer. I plan on doing that soon. I think the image quality is good and I like its image- enhancing features. As a first time owner, I believe digital cameras definitely have their own niche; however, I'm beginning to realize film cameras should never become obsolete; I believe, in the end, they produce better quality pictures. I imagine, too, in the final analysis, price plays a big role. I am happy with the camera and have no regrets about purchasing it. In fact, I'm having a great time filling up my memory card with images of my avacado tree in bloom (pretty good for living in a temperate climate), and my flower and berry gardens as they grow.

Great Deal!

I wanted an inexpensive point and shoot. I had a few requirements: No moving lens (seen too many with dirt-jammed mechanisms), Charge from mini-USB (like my cell phone; I have chargers in my cars, at home, at work) good viewfinder, and use large SD cards. This one wins on all counts. I've taken over a thousand pics and 30+ minutes of video now. I was not too sure how the viewfinder screen would work, but it is bright enough to use outside in sunlight. I haven't run out of power yet. I like the way switching from optical to digital zoom works: When you press the button, it zooms (by steps) to max optical zoom, then you need to take your finger off the button and press it again for digital zoom. Since I rarely want to use digital zoom this is a nice feature for me. Get one while you can!

Answer:
I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the camera and what kind of pictures you want to take. HP makes pretty decent printers and if you can get a sample shot printed from it prior to purchase depending on your satisfaction with the quality of the print that should be your main decision maker on that scale. Also be aware that if you're going to be say, printing a book a photo printer isn't the best choice because the quality is definitely inferior on that level. As for HP cameras I've never had any personal luck with them. As the previous poster stated HP camera's are 'ok' but for true quality I'd look at another brand. I'm a very big fan of Canons, but Nikons are also solid pieces of machinery, along with the sonys, in terms of reliable picture quality and satisfaction.

Question : Is the Hewlett Packard Photosmart M437 Digital Camera, 5.0MP a good camera?
Tell me some of the 'great' features of this camera. Like if you can make your pics black and white on the camera, and if it has options like that.

Yes , but I prefer the PCWOrld magazine "best buy" ( price x technologie x megapixels ), the HP Photosmart R927 ,8.2 megapixels ( $260.00 ) and HP Photosmart R967 , 10 megapixels. ( $280.00). The M437 has a range of shooting modes that provide predefined settings for everyday situations. Question : How to import photo's from HP E427 camera to iPhoto on Mac?
Right, here's the problem, I have a Hewlett Packard E427 digital camera. I have no Hewlett Packard software. I'm trying to import photo's from the camera to iPhoto on my macbook. When I connect the camera to the macbook using USB, iPhoto opens automatically but doesn't give me an (obvious) option to import the photo's. According to Hewlett Packard, you do not have to use their software to import photo's. What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy! Thanks.

Answer:
Here a few problems I see: 1) Do you have the lastest update of iPhoto 2) Go do the side of your iPhoto and look for HPE427 3) If that doesnt show up, try it out on a friends Mac or Windows 4) If all fails get a SD card reader, their like $20 so it snot that big of a deal.

Question : Which brand of laptop would you get, gateway or hewlett-packard?
I am using it for college, surfing net, digital camera stuff, listening to music, etc. Which brand has the least problems overall? My two choices of laptops are between a Hewlett-Packard AMB Turion 64 mobile technology ML-37 model DV5224NR or a Gateway Platinum Edition Notebook with AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology ML-37 Model: MX6455

Answer:
I have always found Toshiba to be a good value and highly reliable.
