Love my new camera!!

Ok, I'm not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination. I don't know how to use 3/4 of the settings on the camera, but I'm learning - slowly. But for the pictures that I have taken are beautiful. It makes me look like I know what I'm doing.

Great Product - Need Better Confirmation

The item came in good condition and as described.
I did not receive confirmation of the order and I received it the last day with-in the expected delivery dates, which was 2 1/2 weeks from placing my order. It was a back order item that was not going to arrive any sooner than the 2-1/2 weeks, but I was not made aware until I called to confirm my order.

Samsung GX-10

Samsung GX-10 is an excellent DSLR (if not one of the best)on the market, technologically and value-wise. Based on Pentax technology, this modfied DSLR is full of technical options only available in higher-priced cameras. The solid (sealed construction) feel of the camera should be an added asset. I recommend this camera to anyone, including serious photographers.

GX-10 Samsung, terrific DSLR value

This is a great camera. I've been a photographer for over 40 years. I'm taking better pictures than ever before since getting it about a month ago. I have only scratched the surface of the creative control it offers. It is big and heavy enough and has a really solid feeling build.

Battery life is great it took me more than couple of weeks to shoot enough images to need to replace the battery with a fresh one. I instinctively bought three batteries. I like keeping spares on hand for any camera. If you're budget conscious you might consider recharging between shoots with only one battery pack and just keeping the thing topped up. It has plenty of capacity. I found I can remove and replace the SD chip or the battery even without removing the quick mounting plate for my tripod from the bottom of the GX10 body.

At the time of purchase, the fact that this camera is such a great value for money made me worry about quality. That worry was misplaced. It's a great deal and a great camera.

The Kit
Nothing has been disappointing so far, other than the 18-55mm kit lens. It simply is not good enough. I just tried it, printed some proofs and put it back in the box. It sits on the shelf waiting for me to choose it if I decide to take pictures at a riot or during a volcanic eruption. If you actually need this level of quality in a DSLR camera, I suggest you choose a different lens.

The great GX10 body is compatible with pretty much everything in the Pentax K mount family, and so you simply need to buy any of many of the very good to excellent lenses in that huge list. The Anti-shake is in the camera so all of them will have the advantage of that. You need not go to the very top of the Pentax line to assemble a really useable set up. I settled on the F1.4 Pentax 50mm which is a very good, ultra fast, and very inexpensive portrait lens priced way below it's value. I added the Pentax 18-250 and the Sigma 12-24 zooms. I shoot a lot of buildings and interiors and the 12-24 gets a lot of use. These are probably not the absolute ultimate for optical quality on the Pentax and compatible w/ K mount lists, but they are more than good enough. I am printing great images and I'm not even thinking about upgrading anything.

If you're on a budget and need an all-around does everything pretty well one lens setup, get the Pentax 18-250 zoom. It might be a long long time before you need anything else. Pay attention to the manual and learn to use the software controls on the camera. You have a lot of camera control over sharpness, color and contrast to creatively augment and moderate the products of the lens optics and their excellent coatings.

The Body Controls and Software
The controls are logically arranged and comfortable to use. the Software is well documented and settings are made accessible with well placed push button rocker switch and scroll wheel controls that activate logical menu groups. You really can adjust things on the fly while shooting. You need only a few seconds. Changing white balance to fix the color balance to suit the weather or indoor lighting is a very quick fix. Touch the Fn button and a couple of clicks of your thumb. You can switch to effective WB presets for sun ,clouds, cloudy, shade, three variations for flourescents and incandescent plus a few more. It takes much longer for me to type it here than it takes to use it even the first time. Switching shooting modes to fix aperture or speed controlling dept of field or motion blur is also very quick and easy.

As you learn and internalize the controls you just get speedier and able to use more and more of the feature set. I really like using this Camera more and more as time passes.

The RAW feature is easy to use, even one picture at a time. Use it. The GX10's RAW feature offers an important window of added potential that will allow you to make the very best images this camera is capable of.

I would buy the GX-10 again, without the 18-55 lens, with no hesitation.

Stunning camera and very affordable

This is a heck of a camera for the price paid (I hate to say it but even at the current price it's a steal). To start off, you can use all the pentax AF lenses made virtually in the past 50 years and don't need adapters. You can use 95% of the MF ones without adapters as well. And these are VERY high quality lenses. You get them really cheap. For example, you can get a stunning high quality 70-210mm AF (autofocus) lens made by pentax (takumar) for less than $70. The slightly better one (pentax-F version) 70-210mm can be had for about $150. It has silky smooth background or bokeh (9 blades) and sharper than a lot of the prime (fixed focus) lenses, boosting 3.4 MTF rating (normalized to 5). If you use this camera body along with a Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI for pentax mount, you have a higher quality hardware set than Nikon or Canon even with their best glasses, for about 1/5 the cost, for indoor/wedding photography. Of course, this assumes you have the know-how and shooting in RAW, to be fair (no pro would shoot in JPG doing wedding portraits in their right minds). I am no pro and this camera is more than enough for all my needs, by the way. My 3rd most favored lens would be my pentax-f 50mm/1.7 AF. I wished I have access to the same 1.4 version that rumored to be slightly better (I do have current AF pentax FA 50mm/1.4 but prefer the old 1.7).

Of course, you know the rest about this camera, in body shake reduction, weather seal etc. The only down side of this, is the slow AF under low light. But for me, this is not that big of a problem. (I use MF to take photos of my kids running around me)

Great Camera

We purchased this camera as an upgrade for our aged Minolta Dimage 500. The Minolta takes great pictures, but is rather limited as far as creativity and doesn't do well with landscapes. Living in Colorado, my wife and I take a lot of landscape pics and wanted something to accurately capture the beauty we see.
As with most things, I did a lot of research on DSLR's before we made this purchase. I looked at professional and consumer reviews for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony/Minolta and Pentax/Samsung. I was surprised to find the big names didn't do so well in the mid-range catagory (D40, XTi, A100). From everything I read, you would need to move up to the high end models of the big boys (at over $1000) to come close to the quality of the Pentax/Samsung. So, loaded with what I believed to be good information, we purchased the Samsung over all of the competition because it had the features and reported image quality we were looking for. At the time, the Samsung had a lower price than the Pentax version, so we went with it.
WOW!......It's been over 20 years since I used an SLR, so I'm relearning everything as I go, but I must say I'm just blown away by this camera. Straight out of the box, our Minolta will take better pics, but that can be said of just about every SLR on the market. These are not point & shoot cameras even though they do have auto functions. If you want the superior images, you're going to have to work a bit at it. However, if you take the time to learn and apply the proper techniques, you'll be amazed at what you can create.
The Samsung offers seemingly infinite possibilities. I'm having fun just shooting objects over and over again at different settings to learn it's capabilities (one of the great things about digital photography, no wasted film). I've taken it to the mountains to test my new skills and have come away with enlargeable and frameable images like I've never taken before. I've also tried to create situations that others have voiced issues with when using the competition, but have not found any situation that can't be captured beautifully with the right settings.
Compared to a P&S, this camera is an extreme amount of work, it's heavy and a lot more expensive.....I just wish I'd bought it sooner. I'll never go back to a P&S again after experiencing the quality of the Samsung (Pentax).

Great DSLR!!!

To anyone looking at getting this camera, don't worry, it's a great camera. It is almost a twin of the Pentax K10D camera. Everything the same except that the battery grip for the K10D does not fit this camera well. You can do a search on this topic. And the problem is that Samsung does not sell its battery grip in the USA yet. So if the grip is really important to you ,consider the Pentax. Other than that, this is one fantastic camera, I love it. Dale

Questions & Answers
Question : What kind of digital SLR camera is best for beginners?
I've taken a recent interest in photography - I've always taken pictures with a normal digital point and shoot camera, but I really really want a beginner SLR camera, which can take really nice pictures but is reasonably priced. I don't know ANYTHING about SLR cameras, but the ones I've looked at so far are the Nikon D40, and the Canon Rebel, and the Pentax K110.... any advice?

Answer:
The Nikon D40 is probably the best beginner SLR, especially for the price. Stepping up from there, consider the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, the Nikon D40x, and the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. The Pentax K100D super is also a good choice, but I think the Nikon is better built.

Question : What is the best nikon or canon digital SLR camera?
I need a good nikon or canon digital SLR camera for a beginner that is easy to carry around. Thanks, TastesLikeCandyCanesAtChristmas!

Answer:
The top rated entry level SLRs are Nikon's D40, D60 and D80 and Canon's Xti and XSi. The best thing to do it trying them all in a store, you'll know which one YOU like best. Personally I like them all, but leaning somewhat to the Canon XSi. But it's a matter of what you like and what you want to spend on a camera. The D40 is the least expensive and still a favorite for a starter DSLR.

Question : What is the best digital SLR camera on the market at the moment in this price range?
I'm planning to spend between £450-£600 on a digital SLR camera sometime soon and I was wondering what the best one out there is at the moment. Preferably I'd like opinions from people who have actually had experience with cameras in general... I'd be interested to hear about noise handling in particular.

Answer:
There is no camera that is better than another in the price range. If you stick with brand names that you are familiar with, they will all be equally good. I would suggest that you look at Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Canon and Nikon and then look for the best "kit" of package deal on the unit you choose. I think you can find an excellent camera for that price and walk off with enough cash to do something else with it.

Question : what is a good starter digital SLR camera that is not too expensive?
it will be my first digital SLR camera, i really enjoy photography and want to get into it.

Answer:
Buy the Nikon D40 as your first. It is built to professional standards but with the consumer in mind. What I mean by this is that you can have full control over what it does, and at the same time it still has programs for different shooting modes. It is easy to use, cheap, and is good for getting you into the market. Use it until you feel that you have out grown it (maybe around a year?) and upgrade to something a bit more professional...D80 or D90....or if you have the money buy the D300 (get one used, just make sure you do not buy it from a professional, they will have used it a lot more than a non-professional). Check amazon and ebay for a package deal, it will come with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm), memory card, tripod, carry case and a few other things. I dont know exactly how much this would cost, but somewhere in the range of $550 to $700. D40 with a 18-55mm lens retails for $450 at JR.com, and the two lens deal (without memory card, etc) retails for $700 on JR.com

Question : What is the cheapest way to get a digital SLR camera?
And don't say steal it! I am a student photographer, and I used a standard canon digital camera, but I wan't something with more optical zoom that can be digital. I already have a canon film slr that my mom used to have, and frankly it is quite old and a hassle to carry around. I decided it might be best if I went ahead and invested in an slr, but i know those are extremely pricey! So, do you know where the best deals are for slr cameras, both on and offline? Or, if not, do you know what the best slr STYLED digital cameras are that are out there? Thank you so much!

Answer:
Depending on how serious you are into photography and what type of photography you are doing. I would personally recommend a second hand or refurbished digital SLR for starters. I bought mine second hand and paid only 1/4th of the original price.I own Canon EOS 10D,you can see some of my photography on my website. Then for the lens, the only problem with second hand is to be very very careful. You'll need to check and make sure that the glass has no marks and there is no dust inside, otherwise buy a new lens. Oh as you said you have a canon film slr, if it has autofocus lenses, you can use them with the digital slr so buy a body only and use existing lenses. Also note that, because the digital slr doesn't have sensor same size as 35mm, so whichever lens you use, you have to multiply it by 1.6 so for example 17mm lens will be converted to approx 27mm on digital slr. Hope this helps. P.S. : To start a photography as a student, none of the compact digital or bridge cameras will help, u'll need digital slr (depending on how serious you are as i said). Otherwise yes there are some digital bridge cameras which provides you with almost all features of an SLR but too slow and quality is not same. A canon bridge camera for example is Canon PowerShot G series or Canon PowerShot S2IS.

Question : Which is the best digital SLR camera and lens combination available within 500$?
I have used point and shoot cameras for 2 years and would love to graduate to digital SLR cameras. I would prefer a camera which is not too new in the market.

Answer:
I happen to like the E series digital SLR's from Olympus. At ten megapixel's, the camera's lens is astoundingly sharp and the whole enchilada will cost you well within your budget. Check some of the sites like B&H Photo. Be wary of kits that offer you a bunch of stuff you don't need. There's also a package deal with two zooms for the E-510. Great feeling camera in the hand as well.

Question : How can I learn how to use my Digital SLR camera properly?
I've just got my first digital SLR camera. It's a Nikon D40. But I don't just want to use the 'auto' settings. What would be the point of that! I want to learn how to use all the manual settings and all that stuff. I am a total beginner. How can I learn about digital SLR photography? Should I enroll in a course? Get a training DVD?

Answer:
Just switch it to manual and go out and take photos. Have a go at changing each setting and take the same photo a few times with different settings - you'll soon work out how to use all the settings to get the best photos (better than using auto). It's how I did it - i'm too impatient to read a guide, and a course while studying a degree would be too much. Mine seem to come out ok. Good luck and have fun!

Question : Can you use normal SLR lenses with a digital camera?
I have a film Minolta Dynax SLR. I would like to upgrade to digital, but I have some great lenses that it would be a shame not to be able to use any more. If I buy a Sony digital SLR body can I use normal lenses with it? Thanks. Just to clarify as I didn't explain too well, Minolta as such do not produce anymore, it is now Sony and they are compatable.

Answer:
When Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 Auto Focus camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. That mount, the A-mount, remains in use today on all current Sony DSLR cameras - A100/200/300/350/700. The lenses you've used on your Minolta Dynax will work just fine on a Sony DSLR. One advantage you'll gain is this: since the image circle for a 35mm film camera is much larger than the sensor on the A300, you'll only be using, in effect, the "sweet spot" of the lens.

Question : What kind of digital SLR camera should I buy?
I have a Panasonic Lumix. It's a great non-SLR (has a built in Leica lens with 12x zoom), but its missing some things. I want to shoot in raw mode, and also would like to get something with rear curtain flash, fill flash, interchangeable lenses, and stuff of that sort. In other words, I want a digital SLR, but I don't know what kind. So, would be a good idea to buy a brand new low end model, like an Olympus E-500 or Nikon D-40, or a last generation top of the line, like an old Nikon D1-H, or Fujifilm S1? I am learning photography, but want to someday be very good at it (as in possibly even professionally good). I don't want a camera that will hold me and my creativity back. Also, I don't think megapixels are a huge deal, as long as I can get at least 1600-1200 photos. I mostly do online stuff, and would only usually go for a 5x7 if I printed anything out. This would be for learning purposes only. Thank you beforehand for all the great answers. 8*) I would also like a camera that can shoot up to 1600 ISO...

Answer:
A Nikon D40 would be a great start for you. The price difference between the D40 and the D40x or some competing cameras could buy you lenses to expand the possibilities. Then, you can use those lenses in the future, if/when you upgrade camera bodies! A D1-H is good, but digital cameras have evolved so much in the last few years. Here's one trusted viewpoint for you. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

Question : What is a good digital SLR camera to buy for an amateur photographer?
I want to upgrade to a digital camera and I was wondering what would be a good one to go with for an amateur photographer. I like the Cannon Rebel line of cameras but I was wondering what a more affordable option might be. What are your thoughts on the Pentax K100d. I learned on a Pentax K1000 and I read that most of the older lenses will fit the Pentax digital SLR cameras.

Answer:
I believe the K100D and K100D Super have been discontinued. Newer models are the K10D and K20D. Pentax is still using the venerable K-mount it introduced in 1975 so any older K-mount manual focus lens can be used with the newest DSLR cameras. There will be limited functionality (manual focus, stop-down metering) but they will enjoy the benefits of image stabilization since Pentax placed it in the camera body. If you have several K-mount lenses in good condition then buy the Pentax DSLR. Since Sony bought the DSLR line from Konica-Minolta in 2006, the Sony Alpha (A) series cameras use the Minolta A-mount introduced with the Minolta Maxxum AF 35mm film camera of 1985. So any Maxxum AF lens will be right at home on the Sony A200 or A350 or A700. Sony also incorporates image stabilization in the camera body.
