In today's day and age of high tech gadgets and emerging technologies one thing is certain; people are relying more and more on consumer electronics and home appliances in our daily lives than ever before. Of course, we all expect the products we buy to perform well and serve us throughout the years, but in reality consumer electronics malfunction all the time. We often buy consumer electronics or appliance products based solely on the name brand. This is because we either feel comfortable with the quality the manufacturer produces or we take comfort in knowing that in the event of a malfunction the manufacturer will stand by their product and make the necessary repairs.
Most manufacturers written warranties offer fantastic parts and labor protection. However, the duration of this coverage under the written warranty is often far too short (e.g. 90 days parts or 1 year parts and labor). Manufacturers strategically limit their liabilities in order to cut down their final cost price and make their products more attractive to the marketplace. Let's face the facts. If you are like most of us, you are not expecting to buy a new Camera , Camcorder or any other major appliance every single year. You want to buy the new product and use it for as many years as it will last. There is only one way for a consumer to be certain that the product you are purchasing will be functioning to factory specifications in say 4 or 5 years from now. This Extended Service Plan offers you the identical high quality protection as the manufacturers written warranty did. This plan extends your coverage for up to 5 (five) full years after the manufacturers written warranty expires.

Strongly recommended.....

After a year with my Nikon D40 and having completed a photography course, I decided to treat myself to a more serious SLR. I bought a used model off eBay - but if I'd seen this price ($799) I would have bought off Amazon. Although its a 2 year old model, its a fantastic camera - selling at the same price as the D90.

If you're a serious amateur photographer - buy this over any of the D40/D60/D90 etc. models. Its got a proper LCD display and you can control 95%+ of the functions and settings you need using only the buttons and the LCD display. I've no doubt that the D300 is a better camera - but its also a a LOT more expensive and I'd argue that unless you make money out of photography its a bit more than you need?

If you are new to dSLR photography then the former models may be better suited to you as they have helpful scene settings - but once you become experienced and start understaning DSLR photography and manipulating RAW files etc. this is the camera for you.

Oh and the camera also takes excellent photos! As another reviewer has noted, all of the 5 star reviews speak for themselves!

Even if Nikon makes the D400 etc. I am keeping this camera.

What happens when you wanted a new at the time D2x or a D2Hs, but the $$$s just didn't make any sense. Buy the D200 instead and get some great glass instead. Unless you are a "pro" and getting paid big money, this D200 is just amazing. Had mine for 2 years and have banged it around, got it wet, hot, cold etc. this camera really just goes and goes. I am an amateur with no "Pro" pretensions but this camera is the D2x's little brother in that the chunky steel and magnesium sealed body, that is all switches dials and doors, this camera is set for the rigors of pro life. I think anyone thinking of using this camera for extended stints should also get the MB-D200 battery grip. Takes 2 of the Nikon EN-EL3 batteries or 6 AA batteries in a pinch with the adapter. The D200 in comparison with my older D70s loves battery power, though I have never run out of power especially with the battery grip before my shooting was done, it does make me concerned. Main reason why I carry 3 camera batteries and a ton of rechargeable AA batteries. In conjunction with the battery grip and the terrific Nikon SB-800 flash this camera is fabulous for special event picture taking like weddings, and also super for Museum photography as well. My trips to the Chino Air museum and the Boeing Museum of flight were just amazing with the D200. Airplanes taken with this camera are just amazing. I love engines and this camera renders the details just great. For fast action race car shooting this cameras 5 frames per second is great too.

A note about exposure. Don't underexpose and the "noise" that the D200 can produce will not harm your pictures. At higher ISO settings at underexposed images chromatic and luminance noise will rear its ugly head. A weakness of the CCD imager that is just about abandoned by Nikon. The D300 uses the CMOS imager with superior performance in the noise arena.

Unlike the lower cost D series Nikon's this D200 will take any autofocus lens whether it has a motor in the lens or not. The D40 and D60 family of cameras will not. The D200 has a built in motor for the lens focus drive built into the body. So while not perfect, I find that I make many more mistakes than my D200 ever does, however when I do what I am supposed to do, the D200 is absolutely amazing.

Another note, since this is a "advanced" enthusiast's camera the "Scene" modes will be not present. I never use them and therefore don't miss them.

The D200 also takes the Compact flash 1 and 2 format cards and IBM microdrive with no problems. However the camera is too old to understand ULTRA DMA cards so don't waste the money on those cards with this camera. With the Sandisk Extreme 3, 4 gig card this camera never let me down with a missed shot ever.

With a shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second and only a 1/250th flash sync speed (my D40 and older D70 had 1/500th second flash sync) you will do well to get that shot.

Menus a plenty, take the time to get your D200 setup the way you want it and you will be glad you did. Custom menus abound, of which I found no use to me, but may be valuable to others. The menus while fairly clear are many and fortunately for most, it would be a one time setup affair.

The mirror lock up feature is nice to check depth of field, something I don't see on a lot of other cameras.

Durability and reliability have been excellent with no issues what so ever.
I read about an independent reviewer who dropped the camera about 5 feet to concrete on the grip and LCD status panel side, and the repair was only $250.00 or so. Pretty good performance since most cameras would be way worse.

Who wants this older camera vs. the D300 say. Someone who wants to save money and get about 7 to 8 tenths the D300 and buy better lenses for the difference maybe. Ones moving up to a better body but doesn't want the D90 and wants something more substantial. The D200 will not disappoint.

Others wanting the latest and greatest will undoubtedly buy the D300 and that makes sense too. For me, and I tried the D300, other than the higher ISO low light performance being better and a better LCD screen, it still was not compelling enough for me to move over to it. I want one sure, but maybe when the price comes down, and even then, it would have to be allot before I give up the D200. I think it is that good. V.C.

This is one professional camera at an amazing price. I use this exclusively for professional portrait and wedding photography. The only thing negative I would say is it eats battery life, even without "chimping". But thats to be expected I suppose from such a high performer such as the D200. All of the automatic features are flawless, and when you want to add your own personal touch, just switch to M mode and set everything manually for some amazing effects. I highly recommend this camera to the amateur and professional alike. You will not be disappointed at all, in fact, you wont be able to put it down.

Questions & Answers
Question : Do all digital SLR cameras allow you to blur the background of a photo? What about shutter delay?
I know w/film SLR cameras you can blur the background; can you do the same w/all digital SLR cameras? Also do all digital SLR cameras allow you to take photos w/out a delay in the shutter? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Answer:
Blur the background.. you're talking about depth of field? Yes, you should be able to do that with any digital slr; keep in mind though, if you are using autofocus, the camera is going to try to determine itself what you are trying to focus on. Switch to manual focusing and you can focus strictly on foreground objects, which should become blurred. The farther back they are, the more intense the blur. Different lenses will also affect this. As for the no delay in shutter speed, what do you mean exactly? That when you press the shutter button, the camera takes the picture instantaneously without having to think first? You just need to make sure the camera doesn't have any thinking to do before taking the picture - hold the shutter button in halfway to allow it to autofocus, then press fully when ready, OR switch to manual mode.

Question : Which is the best digital SLR camera and lens combination available within 500$?
I have used point and shoot cameras for 2 years and would love to graduate to digital SLR cameras. I would prefer a camera which is not too new in the market.

Answer:
I happen to like the E series digital SLR's from Olympus. At ten megapixel's, the camera's lens is astoundingly sharp and the whole enchilada will cost you well within your budget. Check some of the sites like B&H Photo. Be wary of kits that offer you a bunch of stuff you don't need. There's also a package deal with two zooms for the E-510. Great feeling camera in the hand as well.

Question : what is a good starter digital SLR camera that is not too expensive?
it will be my first digital SLR camera, i really enjoy photography and want to get into it.

Answer:
Buy the Nikon D40 as your first. It is built to professional standards but with the consumer in mind. What I mean by this is that you can have full control over what it does, and at the same time it still has programs for different shooting modes. It is easy to use, cheap, and is good for getting you into the market. Use it until you feel that you have out grown it (maybe around a year?) and upgrade to something a bit more professional...D80 or D90....or if you have the money buy the D300 (get one used, just make sure you do not buy it from a professional, they will have used it a lot more than a non-professional). Check amazon and ebay for a package deal, it will come with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm), memory card, tripod, carry case and a few other things. I dont know exactly how much this would cost, but somewhere in the range of $550 to $700. D40 with a 18-55mm lens retails for $450 at JR.com, and the two lens deal (without memory card, etc) retails for $700 on JR.com

Question : What digital SLR camera is a good buy? inexpensive and good quality?
I want to get a digital SLR camera to play with photography. My point and shoot digital camera doesn't give me depth of field, pictures look flat. What digital SLR camera is not that expensive but gives you good quality of photos?

Answer:
Any Digital SLR will run you 700+. I suggest starting with a film SLR. Find one on ebay for under $100. Shoots great and you learn a lot more than the automatic digital help that many digital SLRs have. Then once you feel that photography is actually something worth investing in, then research and find one right for you!

Question : Can you use normal SLR lenses with a digital camera?
I have a film Minolta Dynax SLR. I would like to upgrade to digital, but I have some great lenses that it would be a shame not to be able to use any more. If I buy a Sony digital SLR body can I use normal lenses with it? Thanks. Just to clarify as I didn't explain too well, Minolta as such do not produce anymore, it is now Sony and they are compatable.

Answer:
When Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000 Auto Focus camera in 1985 they changed their lens mount. That mount, the A-mount, remains in use today on all current Sony DSLR cameras - A100/200/300/350/700. The lenses you've used on your Minolta Dynax will work just fine on a Sony DSLR. One advantage you'll gain is this: since the image circle for a 35mm film camera is much larger than the sensor on the A300, you'll only be using, in effect, the "sweet spot" of the lens.

Question : What is a good digital SLR camera to buy for an amateur photographer?
I want to upgrade to a digital camera and I was wondering what would be a good one to go with for an amateur photographer. I like the Cannon Rebel line of cameras but I was wondering what a more affordable option might be. What are your thoughts on the Pentax K100d. I learned on a Pentax K1000 and I read that most of the older lenses will fit the Pentax digital SLR cameras.

Answer:
I believe the K100D and K100D Super have been discontinued. Newer models are the K10D and K20D. Pentax is still using the venerable K-mount it introduced in 1975 so any older K-mount manual focus lens can be used with the newest DSLR cameras. There will be limited functionality (manual focus, stop-down metering) but they will enjoy the benefits of image stabilization since Pentax placed it in the camera body. If you have several K-mount lenses in good condition then buy the Pentax DSLR. Since Sony bought the DSLR line from Konica-Minolta in 2006, the Sony Alpha (A) series cameras use the Minolta A-mount introduced with the Minolta Maxxum AF 35mm film camera of 1985. So any Maxxum AF lens will be right at home on the Sony A200 or A350 or A700. Sony also incorporates image stabilization in the camera body.

Question : What is the best nikon or canon digital SLR camera?
I need a good nikon or canon digital SLR camera for a beginner that is easy to carry around. Thanks, TastesLikeCandyCanesAtChristmas!

Answer:
The top rated entry level SLRs are Nikon's D40, D60 and D80 and Canon's Xti and XSi. The best thing to do it trying them all in a store, you'll know which one YOU like best. Personally I like them all, but leaning somewhat to the Canon XSi. But it's a matter of what you like and what you want to spend on a camera. The D40 is the least expensive and still a favorite for a starter DSLR.

Question : what would be a good digital slr camera for a beginner?
I am interested in photography as a hobby and I am just a beginner. What would be a good digital slr camera to start out with? I don't want something too cheap but it doesn't have to be fancy either.

Answer:
OK here is my short answer. for digital I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) . I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Question : What kind of digital SLR camera is best for beginners?
I've taken a recent interest in photography - I've always taken pictures with a normal digital point and shoot camera, but I really really want a beginner SLR camera, which can take really nice pictures but is reasonably priced. I don't know ANYTHING about SLR cameras, but the ones I've looked at so far are the Nikon D40, and the Canon Rebel, and the Pentax K110.... any advice?

Answer:
The Nikon D40 is probably the best beginner SLR, especially for the price. Stepping up from there, consider the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, the Nikon D40x, and the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. The Pentax K100D super is also a good choice, but I think the Nikon is better built.
