best buy of the year

I bought this for my son as a christmas gift, it's the best purchase I ever made when it comes to digital camera's, I'm mad that I didn't buy myself one as well. It takes great pictures/video and with all of the extra's that come in the package I would have spent alot more money if I had tried to buy it one item at a time. I would recommend this to any one, and I do plan to purchase at least one more of these.

upgrading (?) from and AE 1

I own and love a Canon AE 1 but have been looking at the digital camers if only to be shed of the negatives, developing, and all the rest that comes with a film camera. I would love to have been able to go to a digital SLR but that wasn't in the books this year so I started looking down the scale a bit.

Is the S3 IS an upgrade from a film 35mm AE 1 with a good assortment of lenses? After owning the S3 for six or seven months now and taken somewhere around a thousand pictures with it and, with the exception of extreme zoom range pictures, I'll be damn if I can tell the difference. One thing I do notice is the money not spent having to pay to develop all those bracketing/varied angle/change of lighting/etc shots that go in the trash can after the best of the sequence is picked. Then of course there is the two or three thousand photos I can shoot without having to change film.

The decision made to do the change I read numerous reviews on every major brand digital camera maker's offerings, examined every options those cameras offered, compared those options to my AE 1, and somewhat considered price (most were so closely priced the issue was almost moot). My conclusion was, obviously, that the S3 gave the best bang for the buck and was superior to the newer S5. I have not been disappointed. Well, there is that lens cover thing, it isn't automatic, you have to put it on and take it off yourself. However that's so minor it borders on compulsive obsessive.

NOTE somewhere in the user pictures section of the S3 I have posted a macro called flower. Just as an example of what the camera can do.

Awesome Camera

I researched Many digital cameras before deciding on the canon Power Shot S5 IS, I asked around to a lot of Hobby and professional photographers

and finally went and bought it, Loved it from day one, I stood on my porch zoomed in on a stop sign that was almost 2 blocks away, and took a picture, Was able to see the stop sign like I was standing right in front of it!, Did the same thing with my [...] Vivitar Vivicam couldn't even see what I took a picture of it was a big blur.

Then I went and started taking pictures of the things that was my whole point in buying a new camera - MY birds, I was so tired of my violet parakeets coming out in different shades of blue with my other camera and explaining to people until i was blue in the face "no those birds are really violet not blue"

well those couple hundred shots, Blew my mind and I was hooked Even my blue birds were coming out more true to color

I love the fact you can zoom in while recording video (not a option on my old camera) and I just wish I would of picked this camera up soon I would of had a much better video to send to my parents of my daughters 6th Grade graduation and Talent show she was in. instead of one that you could barely see my daughter in.

The zoom button is in a excellent position

I have not had a single issue with the battery door , when its closed it is closed.

My only complaints and its 2 small ones is well one seems to be the same with every one, The lens cap the slightest touch and it falls off -Granted I enjoy the fact it comes off when turned on (never forget to take the lens cap off LOL)

and it goes drains batteries quick but only seemed to drain my rechargeable ones quickly, I can have non rechargeable ones in it for a few weeks

But I did just buy a new set of rechargeable batteries just haven't used them yet, Hopefully that will take care of the quick drain

Because charging them all night, then taking at the most 4 pictures and the batteries Die is very frustrating

I've owned this camera for over 5 months and I recommend it to any one who asks about cameras

AMAZING CAMERA

This camera takes amazingly clear pictures and fits your hand like a glove. The movable screen is very nice for when you need shots lower or higher since you don't have to bend down or find a stool to stand on. I could go on for a while explaining all the details, but all you need to know is that this is an amazing camera at an amazing price, and you will not be disappointed if you buy it.

great

This camera rocks. I bought it to take to Disney World and the pictures i took looked every bit as good as my old Canon AE1SLR. It is bigger than most point and shoots but it has all the features you might ever want to use, In fact is has more features that i will probably ever use. It is somewhere between a point and shoot and a SLR. The price cant be beat.

Canon S5 IS - good but not a point and shoot

Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS 8.0MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
I bought a refurbished Canon Powershot S5 IS to save some $'s. I replaced a 3 yr old S2 IS. It developed some blurring on the left of the image in the last few months (other than that reliable as heck) and at over $150 for Canon to repair, it was time to upgrade. The S5 is basically just an upgrade from the earlier Powershot S2 and S3. Same lens, just more pixels and some additional features and functionality.
I understand the problems with the camera series; low light focussing is difficult; chromatic abberations to the extremes of the image with high contrast edges; grainy shots above ISO 200, appalling lens cap concept. However, I fixed the lens cap issue by buying a lens adaptor and fitting a standard 52mm UV filter. I can use the usual snap on lens cap with no problem. I also have protected the lens surface this way. It makes for a bulkier camera, (2" added to lens length) but I'd rather protect it than worry about carrying it. Having the same lens, I have been able to fit my adaptor to the S5. The movie function is invaluable. With this camera, I can take high quality photos and movies - very versatile! The Image Stabilization is great and works even in movie mode, eliminating the dreaded shaking at high zoom significantly. The flip-out and rotate LCD screen is good for those over-the-head shots in crowds. The traditional viewfinder, which I use most of the time, is also useful to stabilize the camera against your face and compose the shot in more detail, especially in bright sunshine. If you're an "older" photographer, you can understand the usefulness of the viewfinder.
This camera is not a pocket camera and neither is it a point and shoot. The functionality of this camera is amazing (the operations manual is 200 pages long!) and the image quality is very good. It also uses 4 AA batteries; very useful if you need more power from the local store!
If you know alot about photography, aperture settings, shutter settings, focussing fields, etc, but you don't want to carry a bulky digital SLR around, [I have a bag for the S5 that hangs around my belt with a velcro loop] and you want movie capability, then this is the camera for you. It really is a compact version of an SLR, but with movie capability.
If you know little about photography, and don't want to learn, then maybe you need a simpler camera.
Yes, the S5 IS has some image quality issues, but you won't notice in 95% of your photos. The other 5% can be dealt with with software most of the time!

Given the success of Canon's highly acclaimed G Series, it's no surprise that ambitious photographers have been eagerly anticipating the next model in its evolution. The wait has paid off handsomely with the introduction of the PowerShot G9. In image quality and functionality, the G9 stands above the competition with 12.1 megapixels of resolution, a 6x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer, and RAW mode for the ultimate in creative control. Sophisticated design and high-quality construction complement the technology and make the G9 a camera to be reckoned with.

Customer Review :

After 10 countries, and 59 cities, I finally have what I wanted!

I have had this camera for over 8 months now. During that time, I have done some random photography, and traveled to Barcelona, Granada, Mallorca, and St. Louis. I have taken water shots, night shots, and usual tourist shots. I have also traveled to 59 cities in 10 countries, and most (if not all) of my earlier photographs are day shots, as most point and shoot cameras offer limited controls.

For my trips to wild life refuge, bird sanctuary etc I would carry my DSLR, but I hated to lug it around when I know that I am not headed to a safari. So, I was left with typical consumer cameras- I have tried Sony Cybershot DSC-T70, Samsung (camcorder with 5.2 mp still- NEVER buy it), Canon Powershot S5 IS, and Nikon Coolpix. Samsung- just stay away. Sony Cybershot had poor battery and limited control. Ditto for Nikon Coolpix. Though Nikon one is a much recent model, it still had all the point and shoot stuff, but that's about it. The Canon one was too bulky for a pocket camera.

So, I wanted a camera that will have 5 to 6 optical zoom, as I don't need more than that in daily life. Unless you are doing wildlife photography, I don't see the point of higher optical zoom. I would have been happy with about 6 MP resolution- Canon G9 offered twice as that. I wanted a camera that uses SD card (in fact, that is another reason that I stay away from Sony cameras). I also wanted something that would allow me to set light, shutter, aperture, contrast- the whole range. AND YES! Canon G9 allows for all this, and more.

There are a few night shots that I have taken with no flash. [IMHO, the flash, for most part, ruins night photography. You can even try taking a photo of a Christmas tree with flash and then compare without flash; and see the difference. The problem, however, is if you use the basic point and shoot cam then you can't control how much light camera should absorb, and the photos will come out too dark; and if you take it with flash, it normally comes out bland. So, THAT is a BIG plus for Canon G9. You get to set every bit of control.

The other BIG plus [similar to why I still love the old roll cameras as well as DSLRs] is that I can blur the background imagery esp. in nature photography. Yes! This one makes it possible, other point and shoot don't allow for this.

It also has the regular features- records videos, color swap, color accent, photo stitch, time lapse movies, beach, indoor, snow, portrait, sports, under water, landscape, and the usual stuff.

It is not as light as a basic point and shoot, but also not as big as the SLRs.

What not to do? After getting this camera I also got the adapter and telephoto and wide angle lenses. Yes, you can attach those lenses on this one. But I returned them within a week. Why? Well, it defeats the purpose of carrying a small camera (compared to DSLRs). Also, unlike DSLRs, where the lense would retract into the body of the camera, with these ones, you are basically stuck with them! So, if you plan to buy camera lenses for this one, I'll say go for a small DSLR instead.

I also bought two extra batteries- each could last for up to 5 hours, depending on the weather and use.

I use 8GB SD card with it, and it never runs out. I carry an extra one though as sometimes when I take videos it does fill up.

What could be better? Well, I wish it had a wider shot capacity. But I don't miss it particularly.

The most imp point about photography- it is only 10% about the camera; the 90% is you! Many may disagree, but I also don't believe that one has to join any professional or even hobby class to learn photography. I haven't, and my friends think that I am doing alright! Good luck! If you are looking for something that allows you the freedom to take any pictures and play, while also enable you to learn photography, then this is the one. And I hope that this review, and some of the photos that I have posted for your reference, helps you make your decision!

PS: I enjoy this camera so much, that I actually wrote my first ever review for anything in this world!

Great camera - don't buy it

The Canon G9 is a great camera with terrific features - it is just so unreliable you shouldn't buy it. I have been told that I now need to send the camera back for the 2nd time to get it repaired. Since I now have owned the camera for a year they say it may cost up to $380. I bought the camera to take pictures on trips, the latest problem though occured just in the middle of shooting at home. Not sure I want to even keep the camera even if I get it fixed (and I just bought a dive case for it that I haven't used it yet) because if you can't trust your camera it doesn't matter how many features it has.

LCD cover cracked within 2 months and Canon refused warranty repair

Until Canon can improve the design of this model to improve the cover over the LCD display from than the current flimsy piece of plastic, do NOT get a powershot G9.

I owned mine for 2 months before the cover over the LCD display cracked. This after I owned my last camera - an Olympus Infinity Zoom - for 5 years without any problem. The only reason I'm replacing it is because of the better technologies available.

Another reason not to buy this model - Canon's customer service and warranty dept are awful. We are a small non-profit and they not only refused to fix our camera under warranty - trying to charge us $160 to replace a cracked piece of plastic - but they were VERY rude in the process.

Goodbye Canon. Never another camera from this horrible company.

I purchased my G9 In March. I wanted a D10, however have a 2 year old and figured this smaller camera would be more practical when we are out and about...and boy, was I right! This camera is amazing! I am definitely NOT a professional photographer, however get professional looking pictures every shot.

There are so many features! I especially love the Aquarium setting! Have you ever taken a picture at the aquarium? Normally you can see the flash on the glass and the fish are discolored..well, not anymore!! The images come out crystal clear, as if you are standing in front of the tanks!

Camera = Good, Batteries / Recharger = DooDoo

Canon PowerShot A570IS 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Purchased camera for anniversary cruise photos, for which purpose the camera was quite satisfactory, with memory card holding over 500 images on the initial set of batteries [rechargeable].

Purchased extra set of rechargeable batteries, Canon batter charger, and Canon a/c auxiliary power setup.

After the first use of each set of new batteries, subsequent overnight recharges indicated "complete" -- i.e., blinking light on charger showed steady indicator. From that time on, the recharged batteries would only function to allow about 50 photos, before another recharge was required.

In addition, purchased AA batteries failed to produce more than 50 photos.

The recharged "rechargeable" batteries, both sets, will charge only to about 1.37 volts, and will not charge to a higher level.

This camera eats batteries, both Canon's "rechargeables" as well as commercial standard AA batteries.

If you plan to use the Canon A570IS as an AC unit only, then it is pretty good.

Rating :

As close to a Leica M-series as you will get for $100

Pluses:

- Shutter lag is reduced big time over early Powershot models. It really isn't too much of a problem anymore. But it takes the flash forever to charge up with only 2 AA cells running the show.
- Only weighs a few ounces with 2xAA. A plus if you have an investment in NiMH AA cells, a minus if you compare it to LiIon. Forget about using alkalines, it will only cause you misery.
- Flash exposures, particularly at macro settings, are spectacularly better than older Powershots. Canon really got this right - in "party mode", and in macro (which I use a lot) the camera will get it right every time.
- A bit more aggressive about increasing the "film speed" in auto mode. My old A70 always tried to expose everything at "ASA" 50, even in low light, and I was always manually setting it to "ASA" 200 or 400 and forgetting to set it back. You can leave the A570 on "Auto" more of the time, and not worry about accidentally getting a whole day's worth of grainy, washed-out pictures at "ASA" 200.
- The image stabilization seems to work just fine.

Minuses:

- Still the same puny sub-pencil-eraser sized 1/2.5 sensor as earlier Powershots. "High ASA" exposures are still noisy.
- With only two AA batteries, only 100 or so pictures before your batteries die, even fewer with flash. This may not be much of a minus if you take only a few pictures at a time, and don't use flash too much.
- Optics are a bit better than older Powershots, but that's not saying much. Some distortion and aberration at full aperture. Stopped down, it's OK.

Of course if you think photo quality is proportional to how much money you spend, you'll hate this kind of camera. But I can't stand lugging around a two-pound DSLR brick. I switched to point and shoot cameras long before the world went digital, and for a few lucky years I had a Leica M-series I could borrow. The A570 is only a distant cousin to the Leica, but I won't be heartbroken if it dies or is lost.

Good camera 2x

I purchased this camera as an identical replacement for one my daughter had lost in a state park in Calif. She was very happy with the camera so when I saw that the price had dropped significantly, I decided to purchase it for her again since she already knew how to use it and was pleased with the photo results.

Decent... barely

At first blush, I liked the camera a lot - pretty good quality overall. But after using it for a bit, its biggest drawback was apparent - the battery life is terrible. It uses standard AAA batteries, but they just drain down so quickly. In almost a year that I have owned the camera, by my rough calculation, I must have spent half of the camera price in batteries. And I really don't take that many pictures, we only used it on family occassions and other trips once in a while. I would not recommend this camera.

Questions & Answers
Question : Is the Canon xSi digital SLR camera the only Canon digital camera that uses SD memory cards?
I have always used Canon for P&S cameras, so I own nothing but SD memory cards. I want to buy a Canon brand of digital SLR now, but don't want to use a new type of memory card. After some research, it looks to me like the xSi is the only one that is an option for Canon - would that be correct?

Answer:
No. The current list of Canon Digital SLRs that use SD/SDHC are: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS (aka 1000D) Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (aka 450D) Also the more expensive/professional models that have SD/SDHC and CF card capability. (It wouldn't make sense to buy these just for SD card capability. Much cheaper to buy new CF cards that will work with any of the other Canon Digital SLRs.) EOS-1D Mark II EOS-1D Mark II N EOS-1D Mark III EOS-1Ds Mark II EOS-1Ds Mark III In the end... Compact Flash cards are not very expensive. My opinion is buy whatever camera suits you best and then buy memory cards if you need to. The XS and XSi are great cameras to learn full manual control of the camera on. If your a beginner or don't know much, one of those two cameras is the one to get. If you've got some experience or take photography pretty seriously, a camera like the 40D, 50D, 5D, or 5D Mark II may be more suited to your needs. If all you have are regular SD cards, you may find that they are not large enough to hold many pictures, so you may end up having to buy larger SDHC cards anyways. Just another thing to consider.

Question : What kind of batteries should be used with Canon Digital camera A 570? Any specific brand?
I have recently purchased Canon A 570 Digital camera. The batteries have gone dead I have replaced the old Panasonic batteries with brand new Duracell battery however the moment I inserted the batteries I get battery low display. Are there any specific brands that we have to purchase and any specific model? Can we use rechargeable batteries? Which recharger should I use? Any specific brand? Please let me know the exact name of the model/brand of batteries.

Answer:
Yes, of course you can use rechargeable batteries. In fact, that's what you SHOULD use. Any good name brand of rechargeable NiMh battery and charger will do. Make sure they are high capacity (something like Energizer 2700mAh or higher). Your camera only uses 2 AA batteries, so make sure you buy 4 batteries and a charger that can charge 4 batteries at a time, so you always have a spare set. To lengthen your battery life, make sure you turn off the LCD in between shots, and also limit the use of the flash, zoom and recording of movies. Make sure you always give the batteries a charge before you plan to use the camera. Especially if you have not used it in a while, because NiMh batteries will discharge at the rate of about 1/2 -1% per day when not used. You can also use Lithium batteries (such as Energizer e2). They are non rechargeable and fairly expensive, but provide a much longer battery life than ordinary batteries. They are perfect as an emergency backup...and the good thing about them is that they do not discharge when not used. good luck...

Question : Can you use a sony memory card on a canon digital camera?
I used to have a sony digital camera and had bought a sony memory card for it but my camera broke and so i got a new one but its a canon. but I want to load the pics that I have on my sony memory card to my computer, can I use it in my canon?

Answer:
each camera uses a certain kind of memory card. Your sony was probably a memory stick, or pro duo or something, the canon, like the last person said, is probably an sd. If you really want to know why didn't you try to shove the old one in the new camera. If it fit and saved a taken picture to it then you know it would work. Genius.

Question : what is the latest model of canon digital camera and what is diffrences between these ?
i have bought cannos sd 630 . But i know there is latest model of canon digital camera in the market . So i want to know what can i do with my cannos sd 630 and what can't i do ?

Answer:
The Canon SD 630 is a very good compact camera. I don't think you should worry about the other models for now. I would wait till next year to see what is coming out. They are... SD800 IS, 7.1 MP, 3.7x optical SD900, 10MP, 3x optical A630, 8MP, 4x optical but larger in size The two SD models just have more megapixels and the newer processor. And the SD630 has the same excellent movie mode...and has a large 3.0" LCD. Just make sure you use a fast SD card.

Question : How do I unlock my memory card on my Canon digital camera?
I have a Canon Power Shot SD1000 Digital Elph. I have a memory card that I took pictures on, and somehow the memory card is locked. I let someone hold my camera, so I don't know how it got locked in the first place. It won't let me access my photos, and I know it's the memory card not the camera because the other memory card works. What do I do?!?!?!

Answer:
If you look at the memory card it self there should be a small switch on it. Slide it back and your ready to go!

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics. I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion. Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.
