Customer Review :

terribly disappointing

This is an inferior product. I bought the A640 because my beloved S80 finally bit the dust.

This camera simply cannot take pictures in low light. But all the pictures I have taken with this camera suffer from poor image quality and are often very washed out.

It's possible to take some good photos with this camera using the manual settings (a big selling point for me). It does take excellent macro shots, and the video quality is superb. But if you're wanting a camera to use on vacation, or just take snapshots- go higher or lower on the price scale. This camera is a poorly designed compromise- it has a lot of great features that don't add up to a quality product.

Battery Leak bad customer service

My camera was just out of warranty and the batteries leaked. The company agreed to fix my camera then returned it without fixing it and charged me anyway. They would not release my camera for delivery without a signature so now they have our broken camera. They finally returned the charge, but we are still dissatisfied with them.

Problems with my Canon A640

I am not an expert in cameras for a sophisticated review. I just report two problems with my A640 after a couple years of very light use. The camera is now dead -- not responding to on/off after my recent battery change. The Wolf Camera service wants 130 flat rate for fixing the problem, for I am out of warranty. On several occasions my photos have been spoiled by an easily movable round selector on the top of the camera (portrait, far objects, etc).

Overall, I would never buy it again.

Canon A640 is a Great Camera

I have had this camera for almost two years and I still love it.

It allows me to take great high quality pictures and video. The level of detail in the photos is fantastic. I've posted pictures online from our trips and adventures and people are surprised to find out that it is a point and shoot and not a dslr. The videos come out great too and the sound is fantastic. Other cameras out there have terrible sound with the video, but that's not the case with the Canon 640.

I also love that this camera is versatile. You can add a lens for various shots like telephoto or wide angle with the adapter. Most cameras being sold now, Canon included, do not offer that feature.

I have taken underwater video with the camera (and the underwater casing) - a pool party, lazy river ride, or water slides and they come out great. Many people have come up to me on vacations asking me about the camera and cost explaining that they couldn't do the things I was able to do with this Canon. The dimensions on the pictures I take are 3648 x 2736 and the videos are 640 x 480 at 30 fps. There is a 320 at 15 fps, but I never use that setting.

I take it everywhere I go. It's rugged and I even dropped it from almost 5 feet to a concrete floor and it still worked (whew!).

I was surprised how many pictures and video you can take on one set of batteries. I basically use 8GB and 16GB cards.

Since I kept the camera in my pocket all the time with the LCD screen exposed, the screen did get scratched up with all the loose change and other items in my pocket. I wound up getting the screen protector for this and my hd video camera. The screen didn't crack on me like what happened to another reviewer and I've been pretty rough with the camera.

Only negatives about the camera: 1. you can only take 9:30 minutes of video at a time before it approaches a stop point regardless of the memory card size you are using and how much space is left on the card. To be clear, you can shoot lots of clips, like 3 minutes at a time and have an hour total of video (or more) on your card. I would prefer that it keep recording until you run out of memory or the battery dies. A regular video camera will record until it reaches the end of the tape or it runs out of battery life. A couple of weeks ago, I had 10GB of video on the card with another Gig of photos on the same card using the same set of batteries the whole day (10 am till 8 pm). I have been lucky and got over 11 minutes of video on one shot. 2. The camera does not have Image Stabilization.

I was surprised to read any negative feedback on this camera until I saw further that the reviews were based on one person unable to put the batteries in the camera (please!, you can do it with one hand) transit time in shipping, and another person basing it on a fradulent seller.

Love Canon

I received this camera when my first Elph (SD320, I think) stopped working. I did a little research on-line and found it was a known problem with that model. I contacted Canon and they sent me a free shipping label so they could fix it. It was about 3 weeks later, Canon sent me a whole new camera (for free!) since my old camera was no longer made and they couldn't get parts. I'd had my old camera around three years and used it A LOT. I love Canon's customer service...love the cameras too!!!

Takes Excellent Photos!

I have had my Canon PowerShot for a little more than a year and really enjoy using it. It takes spectacular photos that enlarge well. Like many others, I had trouble with it early on with the dreaded "lens error" message. I sent it back to Canon, and they found sand in the lens (I live on the Oregon Coast and was putting the camera in my pocket when I went to the beach). The first repair cost me about $130 since sand damage is not covered under the warranty. When I got the camera back, the second time I used it, I had another "lens error." I was about ready to chuck the thing in the garbage, but sent it back to the factory. This time the repair was free. In order to protect the camera, I bought a Delkin Snug-It "Tight Fit Camera Skin" and also put the camera in a zip-lock bag when I take it to the beach. I haven't had any more problems with it at all. One word of caution - don't try to put the camera into its case with the skin still on it. I ended up ripping the skin - it's an either-or proposition! Not all of the features of this camera are intuitive, so it really pays to spend some time with the manual to learn about all the things it can do. I'm very pleased with it.

Great scenic shots for a painter

I have had the Canon Powershot A540 for about 2 years. I upgraded from a Nikon 3200 series. I am always on the lookout for things I can turn into a painting. This camera has served me well. I can take a picture through the front windshield while moving and get a great shot. I do however find that to view the pictures taken you have to move the mode switch down to do a review. If you forget to put it back in camera position nothing happens. I like the factor that it allows me so many different shooting modes. It has portrait, landscape (although I've never used it when filming landscape),night snapshots, kids & pets, indoor, foliage, snow, beach, fireworks and underwater. You can change the shooting mode using the button on top of the camera. Can't get any easier than that. Normally I've not had to change my setting to shoot a picture of an amazing color sky. It's response is quick, red eye is reduced but not totally eliminated as I have found out in some shots I've taken. It is lightweight and small enough that it fits in a small cosmetic case in my purse. Uses 2 AA batteries. I use the photo batteries and for me they last a long time. I've been amazed at how long they last. For me downloading is very convenient. I remove the SD memory card and put it in my computer. Then I can go in and crop, stitch, and do whatever I feel has to be done to make the picture better.

The zoom is great, brings what I want closer without losing any detail. In normal setting, I've taken indoor pictures of the grandchildren and my husband and they are perfect. Color is very good. The one thing I would really like to have on this camera is image stabilization.

Looking now to getting either the new Kodak Zi6 pocket camcorder or the RCA small wonder EZ201 so I can capture pix of my great grandchildren doing their thing.

Great Vacation Camera

Have had this one for a year. It's a little tricky getting used to the function options, but once you set them, it takes great pictures. Not as prone to catching "orbs" or dust as much as my Daughter's Casio. Images are sharp but "red eye" still a problem with some night shoots. (you can correct on your computer before uploading to shutterfly or other photo services). Lag time between shots is quick, a lot better than my old Nikon Coolpix. This one really shines in outdoor lighting coloration and depth. While I prefer a full sized SLR digital, this is the next best thing when you travel light.

Amazing camera

I'm not a professional photographer... I'm a person who likes to take pictures of almost everything I see :). Most of the time I have my camera with me, and I like just to point-and-shoot in order to take pictures, without any complicated setups.
I have this camera for about two years now and I can recommend it highly, and here are the reasons why:

- With camera, I bought rechargeable batteries with a charger... Batteries are Nickel-Metal Hydride; 1.2V 2000mAh. I can take about 500 pictures with two batteries (without a flash; with flash it take less pictures). Camera takes two AA batteries, and I have 4 of them, so I always have backup in case I need one... but since they are only AA batteries, even if backup goes off - I just go to any store and buy some more.

- With this camera, I bought 1Gb of memory which is quite a lot of storage space, but since I'm taking a lot of pictures and videos, I have one more 1Gb memory (as a backup). It's very easy to replace memory card - almost the same as replacing batteries.

- Picture quality is very good. I take pictures from a moving car (my husband is driving), and the pictures are very sharp. I was taking pictures during rain, and on the pictures I can see rain drops! Also, there are no red eyes.

- Video quality is amazing! The microphone (located: small holes above lense, oposite from flash) picks up sound really great. When I play the video on my PC, video and sound quality are really amazing - considering that this is "only" Canon PowerShot Digital Camera...

- Size is great. Not very small so it's not easy to missplace it, and not big - easy to put in my bag or a jacket pocket. It's also not heavy, so it's easy to carry it around.

- Canon PowerShote A540 is a "point-and-shoot" camera. In order to take picture, you need to press "On" button, to point and press button to take picture... it's that simple, and quite fast. It slows down (you need to wait sometimes few seconds between pressing button to take picture and actually taking the picture) when batteries are low; I also noticed delay sometimes when Flash="Auto" and when light is not so bright, so I a have feeling that camera 'is thinking' if the flash should go off or not.

- I like that it has 4x zoom, however, when I use zoom, my hand needs to be really-really still in order to get a clear picture - slightest movement will make picture fuzzy.

One con from my side is that display is not protected... after two years in my pockets/purse, I can see light scratches on the display.

This camera has many modes/options... buy honestly, for my picture taking needs, I'm not even using them - I tried them out, but for every day use, I use modes: "Auto" (for pictures) and "Video" (for video)... and that's about it.

Overall, when I look at my previous 2 yrs experience, price, and all features provided, I must say that this is a great camera and I would recommend it to everyone who wants good quality photos with only Point-And-Shoot.

Great Quality

I've been using this camera for close to 2 years now and have been impressed with it's durability and image quality. I find it is not the best in low lighting situations but over all this camera has helped me capture some awesome images. I will be hanging on to it even though I'm upgrading to and SLR soon - a good point and shoot is invaluable.

Great camera for beginner, but mine died after 3 years

The Camera is an excellent choice for a novice , its auto mode takes photos splendidly with lot of details and crisp.

The color contrast of every snap are very appealing. If you have used any of the canon cameras the navigations is very much the same.

Its does'nt take much time before you start utilizing most of the features.

The body of the camera is sturdy and reliable. Had a couple of mishaps but it continued to work fine.

Taking photos in the dark is really a trouble some ... The response of the camera is too too slow after you have clicked ... sometimes u might want to know if the camera is actually working or not.

Unfortunately this camera stopped working today after 3 years.. I dont know whether to revive it by paying 97 dollar for repair or buy a new one.. Not sure how all of a suddenly it stopped working ..this is strange and unexpected from a great camera.

But the greatness of this camera overcomes all this risk. and i would recommend this camera.

Question : Canon digital camera and other non canon lens?
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and I was wondering what other kinds of non canon brand lenses can I use with my camera? Currently I use a Canon 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm kit lens.

Answer:
Some lenses to consider are those from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. On average, each lens does not do as well as their Canon or Nikon counterparts, but still get the job done. If you want quality, get Canon lenses. If you want a cheap alternative, go to the third party brands. As for specifics, I use a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 at the moment, but am going to upgrade to a 70-200mm VR once I save up enough money. The Tamron is good for the money, but slow to focus. I hear this also plagues the type with the built in motor. The type of lens you want depends on the type of shooting you're going to do. If you shoot landscapes, look into a wide angle lens, such as the Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 17-50mm. For telephoto zoom, the 70-200mm f2.8 Tamron would be a good option. I don't care too much for the Sigma, because there are issues with the outer coating. For portrait work, I've heard good things about the Tamron 90mm macro, or the Sigma 70mm macro. I have not used Tonkina, but some people say they are good, while others do not. I guess the same goes for Sigma, but not so much with Tamron.

Question : What canon digital camera body do you recommend to fit my sigma zoom lenses?
I have a Canon EOS Rebel G that came with a 28-80 mini zoom macro and a 70-300 macro super.....I want to get a digital that i can still use my lenses on.Any recommendations? Would it be cheaper to get just the body? Im looking in the $500 range.I am not a pro, but hope to get a good camera to learn that will last.

Question : Canon Digital Camera PowerShot A70 can show menus without any problem but cant shoot any video or pictures?
Canon Digital Camera PowerShot A70 can show menus without any problem but cant shoot any video or pictures. The LCD it self can not show pictures on it, please help.

Answer:
I agree that this sounds like a problem with the CCD. This problem was acknowledged by Canon a couple of years ago. The other answer discussing this provided a link to Canon Europe. In case you are in the US, I will provide a link to the US site for getting your camera repaired. The A70 is an excellent camera for its specs and has better image quality than my father's 6-month-old Kodak. Fortunately I have not had any problems with my A70.

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics. I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion. Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.
