We Love our Powershot!

This camera is the perfect size to take anywhere and it takes GREAT pictures! Very user friendly! We've already got some fantastic photo's!

A good camera

I had the Canon Powershot SD600 for a long time and I loved the camera. It got wet and couldn't be repaired, so I was looking for a replacement. This camera (Canon Powershot SD7701S) is a pretty good one. I still like my older one better. The clarity is amazing but I am having some problems with the body. The lens sometimes sticks and I have to turn it on several times and the battery will say it needs recharged when its full and I will also have to turn it on a few times. Once its on though, it works well. Sometimes its not fast enough to catch my 7 month old son, like the old one was. I am a professional photographer too and have a big camera, so this is my pocket camera. It's not bad and I would recommend it.

Great camera

I bought this camera for my husband, he is grateful for it and has not put it down ever since I gave it to him, its the perfect size and weight, it takes incredible pictures with the best resolution, I recommend this more than the 1100 or the other cameras for 3 reasons
Better resolution
View finder *which enables you to take pictures when it is very bright
Beter lcd screen *that consumes less battery time

Perfect travel companion!

I owned an earlier model of the Canon PowerShot for years and put it through some extreme paces. It went with me up mountains and across oceans and preserved my memories perfectly. However, even the best product doesn't last forever and it was time for an upgrade. Getting a new PowerShot was a no-brainer, and it is great to see how they have improved.

The SD 770-IS has everything I loved about my old PowerShot, but with a clearer picture, longer battery life and a host of new features it will take me quite a while to work my way through. The image stabilizer and face detection are just amazing, and my pictures look even better than before. I am anxious to try out the other modes as well, such as for shooting pictures of fireworks, continuous motion, vegetation and pretty much everything else you can think of. I am by no means a professional photographer, so I appreciate the technology giving me that extra boost!

The size and shape are also an improvement over my previous PowerShot. It is the perfect travel companion, about as big as a deck of cards, and slips easily into my pocket. The ease of use is really nice for when you have to ask a stranger to snap a quick shot. Just a half-click to focus, and then a full press to take the photograph.

As a cool accessory, I recommend the Canon WP-DC23 Waterproof Case. With that clipped on, your new PowerShot can not only travel over the oceans with you but under them as well!

Best bang for the buck

I've been a fan of Canon cameras for years now...I've owned the A40, A60, SD630 and my current camera is the SD870IS and I have loved each and every one of them. This A590IS was a birthday present for my elderly father and would be his first digital camera. I didn't want to spend too much or get a camera that was too tiny or packed with features he would never use. I knew that the shape of this camera (because of AA batteries) would be easier to hold than my tiny SD Eplh's (it is) yet still provide a more than adequate point and shoot when set to auto. Another thing about this camera that I liked is the viewfinder which makes a nice transition for someone who is not used to digicams with lcd screens on the back. The image stabilization (IS) is also worth it's weight in gold when you consider that older digital cameras had to be held absolutely still to get a good picture without blurring. My dad loves this camera..he has already stopped using the viewfinder (which is barely adequate imo)and bought rechargeable AA batteries and a nice case for it. This camera makes a perfect entry level digicam but is still packed with features when you feel comfotable trying them out.

Pros:
Small and light without being too tiny
Takes very good pics even on auto
Packed with features
The price is right

cons:
viewfinder is too small and not accurate
Shape makes it not as "pocketable" as the SD series

Nice little camera

I purchased it to replace my Nikon 850. I use the camera to record family events, indoor activities, and sometimes snapshots of cityscapes, nothing special. I just needed something smaller, lighter, and faster than my previous camera. I like the image stabilization and face recognition features. The batteries (came with the camera) have a longer life than my other camera and the time it takes to recharge between one picture and the next is very short (even using flash). Before I purchased this camera I read reviews and followed the advise to purchase a 4Gb card and extra batteries and charger. I'm using the 4G card. I have not had the need to use the other batteries yet. I'm still discovering and testing the features in this camera. So far, very happy with it.

Rating :

go for A570IS instead

The A590IS adds an 'easy' shooting mode but takes away the 'stitch assist' mode though it comes with the software. Also movie mode goes down to 20 frames/sec vs. 30 on a570 when shooting VGA (640x480). Buttons on A590 changed - they look good - but are kind of trigger happy. Also re-designed case on A590 and the placement of the tripod hole makes it hard to level camera. (not a problem with a570) A570 takes 6-7 seconds to recycle the flash (not sure about A590 which does have better resolution on portraits). Opening and closing the battery door seems very hard on both - until you discover the right way of doing it!

GREAT VALUE!

I bought two of these as gifts. One for a daughter and another for my son. This model of camera has received great acclaim from both magizine reviewers (PC World) and consumer buyers. That and a long standing good reputation of the Canon brand decided the purchase. As these are both Christmas gifts, the actual users of these cameras don't even have them out of the box yet. Based upon their actual use and experience of this camera later on, I'll add to or amend this review accordingly.

Fuzzy pictures in anything other than ideal light

I purchased this camera based upon the reviews from
some of the more notable review sites and was somewhat
disappointed in the image quality both indoors and
under less than full bright sunlight. It would be
a great camera for a kid to play with but not especially
for a photographer. All images appear fuzzy and soft
to me under any situation other than ideal light. The
start up time and focusing time is a bit better than
the competition but that's the only advantage that I can
see in this toy camera. I have a 2 megapixel old Olympus
camera that takes sharper and better exposed indoor shots.

I guess the trade off is that if you want something that
you can fit in your shirt pocket or a toy for a kid than
this would be a good choice. This is not a camera for
those of us who like sharp well focused image quality.

And what is it with the white balance? AWFUL indeed!
All indoor shots have this yellow cast that I find
objectionable. Save your money and look at some offerings
from Olympus or one of the other manufacturers.

I sold mine on ebay and bought a Finepix f50fd for about the
same price. The difference in image quality is like night and
day.

Unexpectedly better than expected-love this shade of gold

I own an Elph SD450 5MP, which I thought nothing could beat for the quality of pictures and movie clips it took. I ordered this one to update my camera and was not disappointed. Canon photos tend to be bluish or dark but that is easily corrected in the computer or with the camera settings. I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity of photos, particularly when using the standard zoom. I also like the movie mode which has been improved over my 450. I gave it 4 instead of 5 because I hoped it was more compact, but it is a tad thicker and bigger all around than the 450. Still, it's a great camera to keep in a purse or briefcase in case the perfect photo opportunity should present itself.

Great camera! Best point-and-shoot I ever had!

If your looking for the "everything" point&shoot carmera this is it. It does so much and more. It allows me to to take my random picture with friends as well as try out some interesting shots with nature and color. It's a solid piece of equipment and I'm glad I got it. The large lcd screen is pretty awesome too!

Excellent Camera

This is the first point and shoot purchased since 2002. After reading numerous reviews both on amazon.com as well as newegg.com, going into Best Buy and playing with all point and shoots available (then reading their reviews), and playing with a friends Canon SD 770, we decided to purchase this model.

Our reasons being:
1) All point and shoot Canons have the Color Accent feature, which is way too much fun to play with.
2) The image quality, in our opinion, is equal, if not far superior to all other models we played with. The color was crisper, the image was clearer (mostly due to the IS), and the screen larger.
3) The price off Amazon.com was by far lower than any other retailer. It put the camera under $200, which was competitively priced, and allowed us to purchase a camera with more features than any other in that range.

So far the battery life has been good, the computer software easy to use, and the camera operation simple to learn. Reading the manual is a must if you plan to do much more than just use automatic.

All in all, no issues, good price, and fun to use!

10MP Quality! The Ultimate!

I ruined my `Nikon 7900' 7.0 megapixel camera after three great years by getting it wet. This was upsetting as I had the SCUBA encasement for that model and a ton of accessories. My nephew turned me onto the `Canon SD790IS' (as it also has an optional SCUBA encasement) and I am very happy.

It has more megapixels (10.0) which is top of the line for pixel qualtiy meaning crisper pictures with a larger 2.5-inch LCD monitor and tons of extras. There is an "Optical Image Stabilizer" which reduces the blur of any camera movement, even with low light. There is also a cool feature called, "Face Detection WB" which means the camera concentrates upon faces, then it calculates "white balance" for the best colors and tones. You can also just select ONE face among the group to highlight (think Birthday parties)!

There is a cool "red-eye" correction that identifies and corrects red-eye when pictures are taken. You can also later detect and correct "red-eye" during image playback.

The camera is smaller and thinner than my previous Nikon and it fits very easily into any pocket (be careful!). It's quick, easy and responds readily. It is a great value for the price. The pictures are just as good (maybe better) than my old camera. I can't wait to go diving now so I can try the underwater encasement (accessory). You can also buy a less expensive underwater encasement accessory for up to 15 feet of depth for snorkeling and there is a waterproof encasement accessory for rainy day shooting.

Poor quality when set on Auto

I find picture quality in Auto Mode very disappointing. I am sure there is a way to improve it through one of hundreds of adjustable settings but if you are casual photographer like me this camera may not be the best option.
Specially inside, when using flash, picture comes out washed-out and very dark. Outside pictures on a cloudy day are slightly better. We have twin babies and take a lot of pictures inside, needless to say, my wife is very disappointed.
Another issue, you can put time stamp on the picture only if you lower quality to 2 MP. I find that really annoying.
On the good side, it is very fast, it takes pictures almost instantaneously and battery lasts forever. Pictures outside on sunny day are beautiful.
In my experience, if you are not interested in learning anything about photography and all you want to do is take nice pictures with camera straight out of the box I would not recommend this model. YMMV.

Question : How do I upgrade the lens of my canon powershot digital camera?
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics. I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.

Answer:
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it. This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion. Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom. I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.

The Canon SD 630 is a very good compact camera. I don't think you should worry about the other models for now. I would wait till next year to see what is coming out. They are... SD800 IS, 7.1 MP, 3.7x optical SD900, 10MP, 3x optical A630, 8MP, 4x optical but larger in size The two SD models just have more megapixels and the newer processor. Question : Is the Canon xSi digital SLR camera the only Canon digital camera that uses SD memory cards?
I have always used Canon for P&S cameras, so I own nothing but SD memory cards. I want to buy a Canon brand of digital SLR now, but don't want to use a new type of memory card. After some research, it looks to me like the xSi is the only one that is an option for Canon - would that be correct?

Answer:
No. The current list of Canon Digital SLRs that use SD/SDHC are: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS (aka 1000D) Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (aka 450D) Also the more expensive/professional models that have SD/SDHC and CF card capability. (It wouldn't make sense to buy these just for SD card capability. Much cheaper to buy new CF cards that will work with any of the other Canon Digital SLRs.) EOS-1D Mark II EOS-1D Mark II N EOS-1D Mark III EOS-1Ds Mark II EOS-1Ds Mark III In the end... Compact Flash cards are not very expensive. My opinion is buy whatever camera suits you best and then buy memory cards if you need to. The XS and XSi are great cameras to learn full manual control of the camera on. If your a beginner or don't know much, one of those two cameras is the one to get. If you've got some experience or take photography pretty seriously, a camera like the 40D, 50D, 5D, or 5D Mark II may be more suited to your needs. If all you have are regular SD cards, you may find that they are not large enough to hold many pictures, so you may end up having to buy larger SDHC cards anyways. Just another thing to consider.
