Beware the "WATER DAMAGE" scam

How many of us Canon "Water Damage" victims are there, I wonder?

Like another reviewer, I purchased the Canon SD850 IS several months ago and have used it regularly. It suddenly stopped working - the lens would not retract. I sent it to Canon for service under their one year warranty. They decided that it would not be "economically feasible" (exact words) to repair the camera and have sent it back to me still broken. Canon "customer care" says that the technicians found "water damage" even though the camera was never around water and worked fine up until the moment it stopped. They even suggested I might have spilled something into it (no way) or perhaps the water damage was caused by going from an air-conditioned environment into a warm humid environment. Ridiculous! Don't most people vacation in warm places? If a camera stops working because it is in warm and humid environment, the label on the camera should clearly state - stay away from nice places!

So it seems that if Canon decides they don't want to repair a camera under warranty, they can just claim "water damage" and they are off the hook. No recourse for the customer, no appeal process.

If you are looking for a $300.00 disposable camera, this is it!

fantabulous

This was an amazing camera. I love it and bring it everywhere. It is easy to use and i am familiar with canon cameras, so it was an extremely delightful transition to this camera. The pictures are often "better than real life" according to a friend. I like quick pictures but i also like quality landscapes or close ups for enlargement. This works perfectly for both.

A nice pocket shooter

I bought this camera to replace the slightly larger PowerShot A720 that our family lost. The SD850 is worth the extra money for two reasons:
First, it's so small that it actually fits inside my shirt pocket. I don't have to carry it awkwardly in a belt holster.
Second, the flash delay is much, much improved. The A720 took forever for the flash to power up after taking a picture that I felt I was missing a lot of opportunities.
There's nothing really wrong with the A720. For the money -- about $150 -- it was a great camera. But if you value a smaller body and quicker flash availability, this is the camera for you.

Great Camera, but...

If you are looking for a camera with great features, look no further.
The price is actually reasonable for what you get. With the simple
click of a button, you have a beautiful detailed photo that captures
the moment and will last forever. The only reason I rated this with
4 stars was because of the size. It always aggravated me that I couldn't
put it in my pocket because it was too thick. Otherwise, I love this
camera, and if size isn't an issue for you, this camera is a fantastic
purchase!

We absolutely love this camera!!

This camera is the best bang for the buck!! The screen is large and the picture crisp! The effects this thing can do are amazing! You would pay $500+ for some cameras that do these things. I can't believe what we got for what we paid for this. Definately worth it. Since we've gotten it a few weeks ago we have only charged the camera once (when we got it) and it is still going ang going!

Canon's iconic ELPH design achieves a stunning new evolution with the PowerShot SD750 Digital ELPH. Utterly simple edge lines and cut surfaces gleam subtly with high-grade finishes. Of course, style means little without substance, and here the SD750 Digital ELPH more than delivers. 7.1 megapixels and DIGIC III create magnificent images, while exciting advanced technologies include Face Detection, Red-eye Correction, and time-lapse movies. Always sized to go, the SD750 Digital ELPH is now extra-durable, with a tough scratch-resistant coating on its anti-reflective, brilliantly colorful 3.0-inch LCD screen.

The Canon SD 750 camera is great! It is easy to use and has fantastic menu options. I highly recommend this camera.

Features harder to use than previous cameras

I have had several other Cannon camera products in the past, and decided that I would like to have something smaller that I could stick in my purse. It's a very cute little camera and I think it will do what I need it to do, but it is taking me alot longer to learn how to work it than I thought it would. But I am certainly the kind of person that just likes to point and shoot. There is one other thing that you should be aware of when purchasing this camera. The memory card that comes with the camera only hold about twelve pictures. So when you purchase this camera, purchase a memory card at the same time. Wish I knew this information before I bought the camera, because I received it just before leaving on vacation and didn't bother to get another memory card and was shock to realize that after twelve picture my memory card was full.

Unlock your SD750

The Cannon PowerShot SD750 is one of the nicest cameras I've seen in a long time. The image quality is fantastic and the modes on the camera are second to none. The real reason you want this camera isn't just for it's great screen, modes, or image quality.
No, you want this camera for the capability hidden within. With a little tweaking (and unfortunately, a possible warranty-voiding) you can unlock features of your camera that put it on par with the highest quality cameras available. With a third-party firmware package that can be used without replacing the stock firmware (meaning, without the possibility of permanently damaging the camera), you can record in a much higher quality file format. Not only this, but you can increase the aperture rate options tenfold, allowing you to take pictures of something as fast as a water droplet hitting a surface, or lightening. With a tripod and a script, one can even set it up to automatically take a picture when movement is detected.
This camera has a lot of capabilities that the average user has no use for, and all the stock options are more than enough for most photographers, making this camera one of the best for nearly every market. With it's small size, high quality images, high usability, and extended features, I believe this camera is well worth the money. I personally keep a copy of the CHDK firmware on all my SD cards, so if I ever want to take pictures with any of the options available to me there, it's always ready. Many thumbs-up to Cannon for this wonderful product.

Amazing Camera!

This camera is amazing. Long lasting battery, Gorgeous pictures, easy to use, large review screen, several picture modes (which really work, Especially the "Beach" mode), Great Zoom, easy to hold, the face detection really works too. One feature I didn't know about until I had the camera was the zoom capabilities it has for pictures already taken. You can zoom on a picture just taken, with crisp imaging.
If you want a point-and-shoot camera the Canon PowerShot Elph is the way to go!

Canon Powershot A590IS

Fourth digital camera I've owned and one of the best. I'm not into a lot of gadgetry so I haven't used all the features but for a quick point and shoot it's a nice piece. Upgraded to 2GB SD memory card and that gives me plenty of space for over 500 photos even at the highest resolution.

Great little camera, get the aux flash unit.

Many reviews on the great aspects of the camera here, just one thing to add. The flash is OK for a point and shoot compact camera, but does take a few seconds to recharge between shots and uses batteries quickly. This is not unique to this camera and my guess is that it just takes power to make a good flash, no matter what camera you use. For those people that need better and faster flash performance, the add on flash unit is the trick. Save batteries and take better indoor flash pictures faster for around $90...

Excellent Little Cam

I bought this camera to replace an old Canon SD250 that was "lost". Great choice. It fits in a pocket, has a gorgeous LCD screen, starts quickly, and has a decent array of features. The image stabilization and facial detection work very well. So far, the battery has been able to last on a weekend trip taking almost 300 shots, but that will decrease. For me, the form factor makes the specialty batteries worth it.

Great Camera

I received my new camera and the 2 spare batteries today-way before the estimated delivery date. The Canon battery charged very quickly-less than 1 1/2 hours. I was able to set everything up without even lookng at the instructions. My 3 main reasons for buying this camera were: excellent movie quality (and to my surprise it is VERY easy to shift from still to video mode), a zoom of more than 3, and a wide angle lens. My only concern was that other reviewers said the zoom did not function in the video mode. Well, they are wrong. It works! The test shots and videos look fantastic.

This camera is replacing a Casio that is just 1 1/2 years old. It still takes good pictures, but the internal battery that retains the date, time, etc is dead. Casio service wants $110 just to look at it. I said that is ridiculous for a camera that only cost several hundred dollars. The Casio is more megapixels (10 vs 8), but that was overkill. Unless you want to crop a small area and blow it way up, you dont need that many megapixels.

The only downsides to this camera that I have found so far are that there are less shooting modes than the Casio had (most of which were not necessary) and switching to sound recording requires several steps. But overall, these are small sacrafices to make for the quality and reputation of another Canon (my second digital camera was a Canon that lasted for many years, and my SLR that I used professionally and still own is a classic Canon AE1-P). I am proud to be back with Canon again!

I like!

If you are like me and do not know much about photography but you enjoy taking a lot of pictures, this review may be helpful.

I honestly only use the camera to point and shoot. So if you are using it for things like that the quality is excellent. Also, I really like how you can take pictures one after another without having to wait 10 seconds until the picture is saved. I honestly love how the colors turn out very bright especially during the day. If you take pictures outside a lot it is a really great compact camera.

Also, the screen is pretty big and viewing the photos are nice, crisp, and easy!
I also like the video mode. The videos turn out a decent quality for a digital camera. The quality of the video mode surprised me since it wasn't like a super-fast slideshow of pictures.

The only thing I don't like about this camera is that I can't ever take night-sceneries that great. The lights always turn out blurry.

A great little camera with big features

I have purchased 2 Canon 870IS's from Amazon now, much cheaper than retail stores are charging. The wide angle lens makes a huge difference, especially on scenic shots. The image stabilization is great. I have taken it to several professional baseball games and captured some nice action shots that turn out very clear, no blurs, IS is an awesome feature. Face recognition, cycle time between shots and even the smallish flash work great. A lot of great features in a small package and you cant beat the price. Good battery life too. Spring for a 2 or 4gb flash card and you can take photos endlessly without running out of storage. I rate this camera very very good, especially considering the price.

Big on Screen, Little on Usability

This is my second Canon camera so I am obviously enough of a fan to purchase their products twice. I also only purchase another camera when the current one stops functioning for some reason, in this case it was nudged from its seat on the work bench by my wife's elbow, landing on the concrete floor of the garage. Things didn't work so well after that. I purchased the 870 after much consternation between it and the 850 based on the size of the lcd. Upon reflection, I never used the optical viewfinder on my other digital cameras so that main feature difference paled in comparison to a bigger lcd, which I use constantly to show friends photos on the fly. The only real issue is that the controls are right where I place my thumb on the back of the camera. At times, seemingly with increasing frequency, my thumb activates a mode change and the shot I am attempting to capture either must remain in the same state of paralysis or I miss it.

But all that said, I love the canon cameras. The picture quality is outstanding and for the little that I use the additional modes, they have functioned flawlessly.

The Best Compact Digital Camera I Have Seen So Far

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5K 9.1 Megapixel digital camera is truly in a class by itself. It is the best compact digital camera I have seen so far, and strongly recommended it to a relative. My relative is enjoying hers now, and I have been quite impressed with the results. This camera performs superbly under both bright and low light conditions without a flash, certainly an impressive result for a camera as small and compact as this. Pictures have ample contrast and resolution, though tending slightly to the warm side. While she hasn't tried the HD video application yet, I wouldn't be surprised if the contrast and resolution is identical with still pictures. Without question, the Leica zoom lens is a fine performer and is a primary reason why you ought to buy this camera. Without indulging too much in hype, I can say with utmost certainty that Panasonic and Leica have hit a home run with this splendid little camera.

Horrible quality - not a good choice

This camera has really bad audio quality when shooting videos. The sound in a quiet room has a hiss and any voices really muddy. I did a direct comparison to the Canon SD870IS and the Canon blows this Panasonic away completely both in terms of videos and pictures.

The image out of the Panasonic camera are just so-so, look sorta muddy and dull. I was willing to deal with that and fix them in Photoshop, but the audio issue is a total deal killer. You cannot even use this camera to shoot videos unless you want to shoot a silent one. It's that bad.

The Canon SD870 IS would be a much better choice both for image quality and audio for videos by a surprising long shot. I'd much rather have a camera that does everything well than a camera that purports to have HD video capabilities that you cannot even use to shoot videos because quality is so bad. The standard definition videos out of the Canon look and sound better than the HD videos out of the Panasonic believe it or not. The Panasonic is just not a quality camera in any way. Take a look at the popular positive review of the Panasonic TZ5 and note even that person states the videos out of the Panasonic are horrible.

The best

After reading lots of reviews (including here) for a number of cameras in this price range, I decided to buy this camera. Though I haven't tried all its features yet, I know I made the right choice. It is perfect for casual photography, since this particular Lumix gives accurate colors and offers lots of simple ways to adjust light, color, focus, shutter speed, and more. The 10x zoom is also a big plus, along with the large, bright viewing screen, which provides all the technical information you could need to take decent photos. In addition to all this, it takes pretty decent movies, including HD, widescreen format. Be aware, though, that those who plan to shoot lots of HD movies will need to buy an 8GB or 16GB SDHC card (preferably class 6). For those content with normal movie setting, a 4GB card will be sufficient. If you are considering the less-expensive Lumix DMC-TZ4K, the small additional cost (on Amazon, at least) for the TZ5K is money well spent, considering the differences in the two cameras. For my money, the larger LCD screen alone seals the deal.... A note to the few who have complained about audio quality in movies: First, Panasonic placed the microphone on the top left, which is less than ideal; one has to be careful not to cover it with the left index finger. Second, a high-quality, professional microphone is more than one should expect, as it would significantly increase the price of the camera, as well as its size. In short, this camera is highly recommended

Best Camera I've Seen. Pretty awesome.

I won't bore you with lists of features and whatnot since many other reviewers have gone through this. I am by no means a camera person... in fact I know very little about photography. I just wanted a nice camera to shoot pictures next year in college. My camera arrived in the mail yesterday, and I immediately went out to play with it and shoot some pictures. It was VERY impressive. All of my pictures were very crisp and clear, and they looked like they were taken by a professional or something. They really looked THAT good, and this is coming from someone that knows jack squat about taking pictures.. ive always just been point and shoot kind of person. This camera just has a lot of things normal cameras don't have.. 10x zoom, HD VIDEO, wide lens, intelligent auto system. I think it is the ultimate point and shoot camera. My family has owned 4 digital cameras over the last 4 years or so, and this one by far is the best.

Also the HD VIDEO is incredible! I saw that its gotten a lot of negative reviews, but I was actually impressed by it. Maybe its because my camcorder at home is a little old I am more biased. But honestly, I will have no need for that camcorder anymore with the Lumix. I found the quality of the HD VIDEO to be pretty amazing and it looks really nice when watching it on the computer or camera. However, you will need to take contious focusing off because it constantly makes the video blurry then not blurry and back and forth.

OVERALL.. very pleased!!!!

Love it!!!!

Just got my camera and I've been playing with it for a couple of hours now and I just have to say I love it!!! It has a large variety of options that comes in handy if you want to take different types of pictures. It's really fast as well, start up time is super quick, before I can even turn the camera over to look at the screen it's already on. The LCD screen is gorgeous, super clear and vibrant. Video capture is great, but the mic. could be placed better, to allow for better sound, but it's still very nice. I have to say I thought the camera was thinner, but it's still quite thin. All in all I love it, I've done digital photography in the past and I have to say I've finally found a camera that is good enough to do what I want to do, without breaking the bank.

Questions & Answers
Question : What is a good digital camera to buy?
I want one that takes really sharp pictures, has an optical zoom, not digital zoom, and has at least 3 mega pixels and is under 300 bucks. The digital camera I have now is really bad, it's a Polaroid I-Zone, and the pictures are horrible. I can't take pictures of myself with the flash on, because my face gets washed out even if I hold it far away from my face, and if I try to take a picture without the flash, my face is really red and blotchy. I need a good digital camera that's professional photographer quality. Thank you.

Answer:
I believe the 6Meg Pix already under $200. And this is Sony I'm talking about.

Question : What digital camera has the best video capture capabilities?
I like to get pictures and video when i'm on trips with my family but i hate to lug around both a digital camera and a video camera. What's my best option?

Answer:
Personally I like the Casio EX-Z750. It can shoot video on HQ mode at 640X480 resolution(30fps)with audio and is limited by the amount of memory you have. IMO, a wonderful feature. And, with the 2.5" lcd screen(one of the largest in the ultra-compact class), it makes shooting video even easier. Not only is the video mode great but the photos it takes are wonderful(7.2MP). One thing you have to get over: it's not a canon.I researched it like crazy before getting one and am very pleased w/ the results. good luck

Question : What is the best digital camera in the price range up to $220?
I am looking for a digital camera from a trustworthy brand that will deliver GREAT quality pictures. I do not want a camera that produces grainy or blurry pictures. I also want the camera to have nice features and it the camera has to be compatible with Windows Vista. Does anyone know of a good camera? I also would prefer that the cam is sold with and AC adapter and at least a little bit of internal memory. Thanks so much! I am having trouble figuring out what digital cams are good.

Answer:
You can have a look at PowerShot SD1100..I find that it is on sale now..A decent deal for it is only $220 instead of $250. http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=94980&ru=283 Hope it helps.

Question : What is the best digital camera for my purposes?
I am a amatuer photographer, with little experience, but a very inspiring instructor. I was hoping to buy a digital camera for myself sometime soon, but I only have the funds for a camera that is under $150 USD. I would mainly be using the camera for portraits (of people) and landscape shots. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a camera for me.

Answer:
I am totally sold on the Canon Powershot Camera's. Here is a suggestion ... tho list price is $299, at some of the online stores you can get a Canon Powershot A630 for just over $200. If there is any way at all you can do so, get one. It is 8mp, and excellent. Otherwise, go to the Canon website and look at other powershot camera's. Another idea is, google "digital camera reviews" and you will get some excellent websites that review various cameras, and make your choice from there. Enjoy!!!

Question : What is a good digital camera to get for a novice photographer?
I am a graphic design student who is interested in photography - specifically pin-up/fashion photography- and would like to use the shots for my art work. The only problem is that Graphic Design school is expensive enough, so I plan on teaching my self the basics in digital photography......so I would like some recommendations on a starter digital camera that isnt too expensive! I have a simple Kodak Easy Share 3.1 camera....im assuming it wont make the cut! Although I use photoshop to manipulate photo's i take - I figure I would still need a better camera to take better shots.... any recommendations/ideas on cameras, equipment, how to get started would help and be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
You don't say where you want to take photos, but this will be the key to your decision. A built in flash in a compact camera will only work up to 3m from the subject, will create unattractive, hard shadows and bright glaring refelctions. To avoid this you would need an SLR camera with a separate flash unit. You can add a diffuser to this to give much more subtle lighting effects, better for portraits. The other essential is a telephoto lens, as the best effects are usually achieved when you move yourself further away from the subject, then zoom in. There's more advice on choosing the right camera on my website.

Question : Digital camera?
I have a digital camera and its been acting weird. I won't let you take pictures because it says on the bottom right corner that its on lock. I looked through the manual and I asked a bunch of people but they don't know how to get it off lock. Anyone know?

Answer:
Well, I don't know what brand of camera you have. If you are absolutely sure it's not in the manual, how about you try Googling it... or go to the brand name website. If it doesn't say anything on their website or on Google, you can try calling a contact number (should be on the website) and just quickly ask them. They should be able to help you out.

Question : Which digital camera is the quickest to take photos?
I am looking for a digital camera that takes the quickest pictures when I push the shutter button. I have a digital that when I push the button it takes about two to three seconds to capture the picture and by the time the picture is captured, my two year old has already moved on. I need a digital camera that is just as fast as my two year old. Thanks!

Answer:
You need an SLR, because everything happens NOW when you push the shutter. Consider the Nikon D40, which even has a "Child" setting. Check out Nikon's "Picturetown" promotion, where they handed out 200 D40's in Georgetown, SC. http://www.stunningnikon.com/picturetown/ Here are a few reviews, in case you have not read them yet. Be sure to note that they are several pages long and some of the reviews also have some sample images that you can look at. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/ http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/nikon_d40.html http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm

Question : Best digital camera for a student photographer?
I am currently a student in high school, and I am very interested in digital photography. I do not have a lot of experience with purchasing cameras, and I am looking for a digital camera that has great features, easy to use functions, and is durable. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
SLR is good but $$$ even the inexpensive ones are $500+. A good point and shoot that has full manual shooting capability will be $250+ and it is the minimum I would recommend for someone who thinks they might get serious about shooting since even if you upgrade later on, you can still learn how to take pictures by using the full manual mode. Then IF you decide to upgrade to a true SLR/DSLR, you can always use the P&S as a pocket camera while the DSLR/SLR can become your serious shooter. On the other hand if you decide that Photography is not your thing, it hasn't cost you alot to figure that out. HTH.

Question : Which kind of digital camera should I buy to take a good picture of a fake jewel?
I want to sell fake jewels on ebay. I tried to take pictures with 2 digital cameras but none of them gave good quality pictures. Is there also a special kind of holder I should buy? Please tell me some brand and models of cameras I should buy. The problem is that I need to have a camera that take good close up.

Answer:
First of all. Taking pictures of celebrities, even fake ones, is considered Paprazzi. You really need to fully consider exactly what the implications of that may be for you personally. remember Princess DI (may she rest in piece) Secondly you really need to consider the service that ebay provides. Selling people, while a viable market, really isn't their forte. You might want to do a quick google search for "underground slave auction" or "slaves for sale" or "ebay like site for slaves" or "celebrity look-alike auction sites" I know there are quite a few of them if you look in the right places. you might try sites with the .glov extension first. Now, lets move on to the types of holders you might want to buy (and I believe they prefer the term "retain") I would look for a large man from the Netherlands, or possibly Egypt, preferably with a scar across his face. They should be mute and deaf to get the best results. Also make sure they are willing to take care of the "Smooshy" which can be quite a large problem when dealing in the slave trade. Anyway, stay away from the Holders that advertise themselves in the phone book, just find someone and appraoch them about it, and remember, money talks. Now as far as taking pictures of the celebrity impersonators, what I might suggest is using what we call in the industry a home-made paper image transfer. This is a good way to keep the photo development places from asking too many questions. Here's how you make one. 1) Take a large cardboard box 2) Remove the seeds from the inside. This can be done with a large spoon or your hand. 3) Poke a hole in one side of the box. 4) Place a piece of photo paper directly between the box and your photo subject (most likely hang it from the ceiling using a string and gum) 5) Take a lemon and cut it in half. 6) Place one half of the lemon directly behind the hole in the box, and the other half on the head of the photo subject. 7) Get inside the box and have the photo subject, flip the lights in the room on and off 8) the tranfer of electrons from your bodies interaction with the lemon juice and the photo subjects will create a photo image of the subject on the paper. Hope this helps! -- good luck!

Question : What digital camera is best for a new user?
I am wanting to buy a nice digital camera within the next couple of days. I dont know a lot about photography but will hopefully be learning all about it by taking a photography class or by buying a book. Any suggestions one which make and model I should look into? Also, any suggestions on books that are helpful with learning about cameras and photography? Thanks!

Answer:
If you want something really easy for snapshots, the Kodak cameras are really great. If you want to learn how to use all the special features, probably a canon would be better because kodak cameras don't usually have as many of those. Also, there are panasonic cameras that are really nice. I have one that does most of the things that the SLR cameras will do... It even has a 12X optical zoom, but it's pretty small (for a camera with that type of zoom.) I love it. It was around $400, but that was about 2 years ago so I'm sure they are cheaper now.
